Welcome
I
t’s been a year since I wrote my last pre-harvest review and once again, we are on the cusp of reaping the rewards of 12 months of hard graft.
Commodity pricing and those associated to inputs continue to fluctuate but with the prospect of some good incomes we hope for some positivity for our farming friends. Costs and pricing within our own business remain volatile. Operating costs remain high, even when compared to our forecasts. Unfortunately, my crystal ball remains cloudy, but I hope for better pricing as we move closer to the year end. 2022 has brought back our show season. I would like to express my thanks to all those who have visited us to say ‘hello’ and ‘welcome back’ over the past few weeks. I know I speak for all those at TNS that it’s lovely to greet people in person once again. We now look ahead to 2023. With factory production for 2022 all but closed we have now started planning the 2023 objectives. With manufacturers and suppliers promoting long lead times it has become imperative to forward forecast as much as possible. With these challenges firmly in our mind we have planned our demo machinery plans for the harvest and cultivation seasons. Once again, we have a broad range for you to test in your farm conditions, so please speak to our teams to discuss. As I mentioned in last year’s report 2021 saw the launch of many new aspects to TNS: • Approved Used – continues to see growth in the export and national markets. Call James or Rob or visit www.tnsgroup.co.uk/approved • SymAgri – has traded in line with objectives and we have significant interest nationally for our services. Have a look at what the team can offer. www.symagri.co.uk • Our web shop has seen a significant increase in traffic and we continue to invest with this digital interface www.tnsgroup.co.uk/buy-online • Manitou, GreenMech and Honda – are all trading well with tremendous growth in all areas. Our teams across the group are here to assist and I would like to thank them for their continued efforts to deliver a first-class service to our customers. Thank you once again for your continued business and support in these challenging times.

It’s Show Time! S
how season is finally back and it’s great to be able to greet people in person once again. We had a mixed bag of weather for the Suffolk Show in May, offset by the fun of being at a show again showcasing the latest machines and seeing returning faces. It was great to also feature our special Massey Ferguson Platinum Jubilee tractor, draped in union jack colours to celebrate the occasion. To prepare for the return of agricultural show schedule, our Product Support Team have been tirelessly working away and preparing every detail to welcome everyone back to our stand. With Manitou UK celebrating it’s 50th year, it was great to have a special edition golden Manitou on display as well!

Richie Hannant and Chris Tew with Bessie at The Royal Norfolk Show.
The Royal Norfolk Show also proved to be a successful event, welcoming everyone back and having a new platform to showcase our products. With the introduction of the Agricultural ring, we were delighted to have the chance to run demonstrations over both days. Our Fendt Rogator 645 Sprayer was in action showcasing it’s spraying application, with Kris from our Product Support Team at the wheel. Amongst all the brands on display over the Norfolk Show, Bessie, our steam engine, was proudly on display. Bessie was sold by George Thurlow exactly 100 years ago to the month, a great reminder of the long history the Thurlow family carries within East Anglian agriculture. A big thank you goes to everyone that came over to support both shows to make them as successful as possible.

Million Milestone The Beauvais Massey Ferguson Tractors Plant Celebrates its 1,000,000th Tractor
B
eauvais, June, 14th. Massey Ferguson, a worldwide brand of AGCO, is proud to announce its Beauvais factory (France) just produced its 1,000,000th tractor. Another significant milestone as the brand is celebrating 175 years of history. The brand has been manufacturing tractors in Beauvais since November, 20th 1960.
At an event to mark this milestone, Thierry Lhotte, Vice-President & Managing Director Massey Ferguson EAME & President of AGCO in France underlined: “Our Beauvais Massey Ferguson Global Home has grown continuously over the past 62 years, working with and for farmers. On behalf of all our employees I want to thank our customers for their everlasting trust. We are particularly proud to have them represented today by the owner of this brandnew MF 8S.305 Dyna-VT, the 1,000,000th tractor produced in Beauvais, Mr Thierry Aubrée, arable farmer and contractor, in the village of La Chapelle des Fougeretz in Brittany, France and his local Dealer Hervé Motoculture Mr Aubrée explained why he chose MF as his new tractor: “I’m passionate about new technologies including RTK guidance, section control with a focus on soil preservation and sustainable farming practices. The MF 8S exudes this modernity thanks to its efficient engine, smooth transmission, perfect wheelbase and offers visibility, cab comfort and precision farming connectivity capabilities. Operating my entire MF fleet of 4 tractors, 3 combines, 2 big balers and 1 telehandler, I found a great win-win partnership with my MF dealer based on common trust.’’
10
“With my team, we feel extremely lucky to represent the entire MF dealer network handing over to Mr. Aubrée THE 1,000,000th tractor from the Beauvais Factory. This is a one once in a lifetime moment as there is only one 1,000,000th tractor from Beauvais and we wish long and productive hours of work to Mr Aubrée.”, said Jérome Mazière, Managing Director Hervé Motoculture, the Massey Ferguson dealership serving areas in Côtes d’Armor and Ille-et-Villaine in the region of Brittany, France. “We are extremely proud of this 40 year partnership with Massey Ferguson and grateful of the great welcome our customer received as well as the opportunity we had to see how the Beauvais site continues to deploy its new activities at an impressive pace despite the past 2 challenging years. This will support our farmer’s needs.”, added Jérôme Mazière. Celebrating 62 years of production in Beauvais by committed workers.Boussad Bouaouli, Vice-President Manufacturing Beauvais emphasized the employee’s commitment to the Beauvais MF Campus development: “From 1960, There have always been people who kept the site moving, always with the right farmer first focus to address challenges of the times and, above all, with a clear view to the future.” It all started with the MF 825 in 1960. From then, the site grew continuously producing iconic tractors driven by innovation, such as the MF 3000 series in 1986, the first tractor with on-board electronics, the MF 8600 in 2008, introducing the efficient power concept reducing environmental impact courtesy of the first use of SCR technology on an ag machine, and in 2020, the new MF 8S, with its award winning Protect-U concept with its 24cm gap between the cab and the engine installation, reducing heat, noise and vibrations being transmitted to the cab, and improving cooling and performance. It received the Tractor of the Year 2021, Red Dot: Product Design 2021 and Farm Machine 2022 awards.

New Look for Company Values
O
ur Company values lay the foundation for what the Company cares about most. Having clear values helps us to ensure that we are all working towards the same goals. As a family business, we aim to bring our personal values to the workplace and shape our unique culture. By defining the Company’s values, we aim to build great teams, deliver excellent customer service and promote innovation; ultimately, to provide a common purpose that we can all understand, work towards and live by. We have decided to refresh the look of our Company values on all of our communications, as practicable. The re-launch of our new look logos has already started with new screensavers applied to new devices and new display boards showing the Company’s values to be installed at all TN Group locations imminently. These boards will be displayed in all of our communal areas and as prominently in office space and reception areas as manufacturer CI standards allow.

TNS Service Update
I
t really doesn’t feel that long ago when we were all looking forward to Christmas dinner and now we are over half way through 2022. It’s been a busy half year in the service department. Training is always something we do in the first half of the year to ensure that we are keeping up to date with the latest products and also continuing to grown the knowledge of our technicians. It has been nice to be able to do nearly all of the training face to face with our suppliers as we adjust back to normal life following the pandemic. We have also been out promoting the business to schools, shows and education events to attract future apprentice technicians. This year I am excited to report that we are on track to welcoming 9 to the team around the group on both the agricultural and ground care sides of the business. The apprentices will then join Agco or Kubota apprenticeship programmes to complete their 4 year apprenticeships. To further enhance their skills we have also created our TNS Academy where the apprentices will learn about all areas of the business from finance, KPI’s, customer care skills, sales, parts and most importantly our customer needs. So we go into 2022 harvest on the back of a good training season, new apprentices joining us and fully prepared to ensure we can react to all of our customer needs with in and out of hours support.

Master Chipper Greenmech 220TMP Proves To Be The ‘Master’ Of High Output 9” Woodchippers!
W
hen tree surgeon Paul Cutler was in the market for a new woodchipper to handle large scale domestic tree-works, there was only one machine that fitted the bill – a Chipmaster 220TMP from GreenMech. Having been impressed with the build quality of the GreenMech machines at a local dealer open day, Paul took delivery of his machine in January 2022, and it’s already blown him away with its high output capabilities taking large conifers and other bulky material in its stride. Paul has used various makes and models of woodchipper over his 35-year career, with a 4” and 6” road-tow machine currently on his fleet, sitting alongside a second-hand 6” PTO unit that began costing Paul more than it was earning! “I had recently purchased some other equipment from our local machinery dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen, when Andy Rayner mentioned they were becoming GreenMech dealers and invited me along to an open day” Paul explains.
Paul was impressed with the build quality of the Chipmaster 220TMP.
22
Impressed with the build quality of the machines on show, he explored further, before settling on the Chipmaster 220TMP. “The great thing about this chipper is that it has a huge 9” capacity which is fantastic for productivity, but it only requires a 60hp tractor. It also has a really wide infeed chute which means we can put in large, twisted brash and branches without needing to spend time trimming them down or inadvertently triggering the safety bar.” “Not only is it giving us high output, the whole machine is so simple to use” he continues. The Chipmaster 220TMP is the ultimate ‘maximum output, minimum investment’ machine. It fits the three-point linkage on tractors between 60 and 80hp, with the feed rollers powered by the tractor’s hydraulic system. The Chipmaster has been designed to deliver the perfect combination of tremendous strength and robust performance – promising the free-flow and high throughput of bulky materials. “I’ve been using it this week on a big domestic job, and it’s been taking 20-foot long and 6” diameter conifers, with no trouble at all.” Paul concludes, “The difference between the Chipmaster and our old machine and 6” unit is huge! With the performance and significant time savings it’s already bringing to jobs, it really is a brilliant investment.” Article by Louise Challiss from Pan Publicity Limited

Kverneland Kultistrip Strip-Tilling For Beet
R
educing cultivations for sugar beet establishment has been an ongoing project for J & HM Robinson of North Creake, Norfolk..After adopting a tined cultivator to prepare seedbeds ahead of sugar beet, partner Jack Robinson was keen to progress with strip-tillage. Having used a six-row demo machine from supplying dealer TNS for two seasons, he joined forces with Barsham Estates, working with farm manager Stuart Law, to then purchase a 12-row Kverneland Kultistrip for spring 2021. “In the first year, we trialled on a 36m tramline in one field, then the following year we trialled across 10ha,” explains Jack Robinson. “In spring 2021 we then used our 12-row version for the first time, growing 210ha of sugar beet between us, using strip tillage techniques.” The Kultistrip works into cover crop residues and can prepare a seedbed for the farm’s 12row Kverneland Monopill precision drill, in one pass on lighter soils.
“We’ve reduced our cultivation costs to £40-45/ha,” he says. “There’s a significant time saving too, as the 6m Kverneland Kultistrip will cover 40ha/day in some fields.” Heavier soils get an autumn pass to create ‘winter strips’, with soil moved to full depth of 20-25cm, before freshening up in the spring. Once the soil has ‘hazed over’, the precision drill goes in. Mr Robinson likes the simplicity of the strip-till system, which uses finger wheels to move trash, ahead of a leading disc, tine and rear press wheels.
24
“We currently place liquid DAP when drilling and slightly shallower than we would like, but the Kverneland Kultistrip can also place fertiliser, which would allow us to put it under the seed. It’s not a huge job and it’s on the list to consider.”
He comments that the partnership’s 300hp tractor handles the Kultistrip comfortably. “We aim to work at 8-10kph – you don’t want to go too quickly and ‘boil’ the soil. Conditions also need to be right; it’s possible to really cover the ground with it, so we’ve learned to wait.” Results have been pleasing, he says. “It works really well – the Kultistrip takes the hassle out of preparing land for beet. With unworked strips of ground between the rows, our fields also carry the harvester better.” “We’re moving the soil less and have been able to cut out one herbicide pass. Working into cover crop residue does leave a scruffy seed bed, but it also binds the soil and we’re not seeing any wind erosion on lighter soils, which can cut young sugar beet off.” Moisture conservation is another benefit. “We’re drilling into moisture, and if the soils are loose we can put the seed in deeper, as it leaves a highly friable strip which is very easy to drill into.” The partners are also considering other opportunities for the Kultistrip. “We’ve already hired it out to a local farm for maize, and it would be easy to put a seeder on the Kultistrip for oilseed rape establishment.” Mr Robinson says that investing in sugar beet machinery was a big commitment. “Our confidence has grown and we are happy that we are establishing the crop costeffectively. And sharing with another farm has made this an even better choice,” he says. “Not just financially – it’s an opportunity to share knowledge, which is not something that farmers are very good at.”

e find ourselves just over a year into the Manitou franchise and it's safe to say it's been pretty manic from a construction perspective! In just over 12 months, TNS has won more than 70 orders for new Manitou construction machines, including some key deals stuck with multiple usage customers. New partnerships with businesses such as Anglian Plant, who through TNS have chosen to add over 32 new Manitou machines to their ever-growing construction hire fleet, are key to our success within this sector. Our network of depots across East Anglia and the high standards of service we provide put us in the perfect position to maximise our construction sales. We recently announced the expansion of our offering through the Honda franchise too, with new products such as water pumps, generators and power carriers being added from the Honda Industrial range. In general, the construction industry is still particularly buoyant with plant equipment in very high demand due to extended lead times at almost every machinery manufacturer. At TNS we have begun a new and exciting journey into the construction sector and our aspirations of successful and sustained growth rely on having a strong portfolio of quality brands such as Manitou and Honda at our disposal.

Plenty of Parts! Original Great Plains and Simba Parts Now Available From Your Local TNS Branch
W
e are pleased to announce that Thurlow Nunn Standen can now supply original parts for Simba and Great Plains machinery from our five branches across East Anglia.
We have been dealers for the Kverneland franchise for some time and recently Kverneland also took over the Simba / Great Plains franchise. Today Kverneland Group continues to produce the DTX and Flatliner subsoilers with DD™ ring rollers under the Kverneland brand. We have recently put in a rather large out-of-season order to top up our stock as we feel there could be a potential short supply of steel over the coming months, and we wanted to ensure all our customers’ needs are met during the season. If you would like us to quote for any parts for your Kverneland or Simba/ Great Plains machinery, please feel free to contact us.
