World Benchmark Battery Testing Calorimetry Calorimetry

Since our last Quarterly eNewsletter we have been pleased to welcome new customers for our Battery Calorimeters – plus some friends with high workload have been acquiring additional systems.

• In the UK battery research is accelerating and THT have orders for EV+ units from both Warwick University funded by Jaguar Land Rover (Tata Motors) and the University of Sheffield. • In Germany, KIT (Karlsruhe) are adding ARCs number 4 and 5 to their stock – one more and they will equal Sandia National Labs who with 6 are the ‘record holders’! • In Korea, Samsung’s 4th ARC is due to be delivered later this month, and with LG are major users of THT battery calorimeters. • In China, Shenzhen based Techtronic (TTI) a major supplier in the domestic electric appliance market have recently taken delivery of an EV+ ARC system. • In Norway, the Defence Research Establishment (FFI) is the first customer to purchase an ARC for research of lithium-based battery technology for naval applications. • In the USA – you could say...THT ARC calorimeters are really taking off – with a system winging its way to Boeing Aerospace. THT welcome these new customers and look forward to working with them over the years. 2

Application Notes Controlled Speed Nail Penetration application note summary: Click for link to full version. The THT NPCO-SC for ARC allows for cells to undergo nail penetration tests in a controlled and repeatable manner. Results demonstrate that penetration speed has a significant effect on the severity of the resulting thermal event. Penetration speeds specified by some standards (e.g. 8cm/s) are very fast and avoid the more severe thermal events seen at lower penetration speeds of a few mm/s or less. The adiabatic environment of the calorimeter allows quantification of heat release from these tests and meaningful comparison between tests. A high power geared motor allows for penetration of the toughest steel-cased cells.

Effects of External Pressure on Cell Decomposition application note summary: Click for link to full version. Most hard-case lithium-ion cells now rely on an inbuilt burst-disc near the cell terminal to relieve pressure resulting from gas generation inside the cell. This is to avoid bomb-like detonations of the steel case as the internal pressure rises. However, in conditions of varying atmospheric pressure, the burst disc can rupture at higher and lower pressures. The important factor is the pressure difference between the inside and the outside of the cell case. If the cell is to be used in an evacuated or pressurized environment, this should be considered. Varying atmospheric conditions can be simulated in an ARC test with the cell inside a pressure vessel. Sub-Ambient Battery Cycling application note summary: Click for link to full version. Many developing battery applications, such as energy storage for electric vehicles, require battery operation at sub-ambient temperature. Because batteries rely on a chemical reaction to create electricity, their performance is highly temperature dependant. The ARC working together with the integrated cryogenic systems unit allows sub-ambient testing of samples in a standard calorimeter down to a temperature of –40°C

Thermal Hazard Technology recently exhibited their range of battery safety calorimeters and testing services at Cenex LCV2014. The Low Carbon Vehicle event attracted over 2,400 attendees, a 23% increase in attendance compared to LCV2013. The extensive seminar programme included more than 50 presentations from organisations including BMW, Ford, Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover and Toyota. Leading industry figures explained how low carbon technologies are being introduced into high performance passenger and race cars, what these technologies deliver and the implications for the future of low carbon vehicles of all types. A special show issue of Energy Engineering magazine has been produced. A link to the magazine and interview article with THT’s Battery Specialist, Danny Montgomery, is available here
