Commencing from the 22nd of June, the 2020 Snow Season is going to be a little bit different for everyone involved. To help manage the resort in a safe, orderly manner and to ensure all of our guests, staff and stakeholders work within the health guidelines, we will be asking our Falls Creek guests to do a little extra this year when visiting the resort.
This is going to involve a change in the way the resort has traditionally been accessed. This is being done to ensure everyone’s safety and to make sure the industry is putting the health of the resort, our guests, staff and communities at the forefront.
This year – you will need to plan ahead to help achieve the best possible outcomes under the circumstances we are constrained by.
Much has been discussed in relation to capacity and to ensure the spatial limitations, venue limits and guidance are adhered to.
In this context, initial daily limitations will be applied to resort entry, up until June 24th, when then lifts are expected to turn.
Effective from June 5th, Resort Management will release 250 day passes for vehicles to enter during the day.
Overnight bookings with confirmed accommodation in Falls Creek Resort will not be limited.
Season Pass holders will also be required to register their planned trips in advance as well as print out the confirmation from
the online booking platform as proof of registering.
Authorised pass-holders, mountain staff and residents are not required to register. Further information will be sent to these stakeholders.
In essence – all resort users will need to plan ahead, pre-purchase and we also ask for your help and patience, as we all adjust to this very unusual season.
So:
• Pre-plan and purchase your lift passes from Falls Creek Ski Lifts.
• Pre-plan, purchase and print your Resort Entry Pass before departing home.
• Pre-plan and book your accommodation (if staying overnight)
The online portal to purchase Resort Entry and register your visit will be available Thursday the 4th of June.
Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board (FCARMB) have been working with a range of stakeholders to shape the 2020 Snow Season. Initiatives to ensure the resort and businesses are COVIDSafe includes capacity management throughout the resort and its food & beverage venues, traceability, cleaning and hygiene, accommodation (commercial, shared and staff) and transportation.
The key points to take note of are:
• These current restrictions are in place from June 6th until June 22nd ONLY.
• Resort activation is limited until this time.

• The current declared State of Emergency does not expire until June 21st.
• Falls Creek will continue to modify capacity and traceability protocols in line with Victorian Government directives in the interest of safety for all resort users, residents and stakeholders.

Pre-purchase your Resort Entry Pass
Resort Entry is charged at a cost per vehicle for the duration of your stay.
The 2020 Snow Season is going to be a little bit different for everyone involved. You must prepurchase and print your pass before arriving at the resort.
All vehicle resort entry passes must be purchased online and in advance of arrival to the resort.
When purchasing a resort entry pass online, guests will be required to confirm who will be travelling in their vehicle including name and telephone number to allow for traceability (as per any Victorian hospitality venue). This is a DHHS government directive and a condition of entry to the resort for the 2020 snow season.
Resort entry passes must be printed in advance of arrival to the resort.
This pass will need to be presented at the resort entrance at Howman’s Gap (ticket box) or the Accommodation Transfer Service building (after
5pm) and placed on the dashboard when parked within the resort.
Steps:
• Buy online.
• Print out the attachment in your confirmation email.
• Show the attachment at the Resort Entrance (Howman's Gap).
• Display in your windscreen when you park at Falls Creek
Passes will be available to purchase from the 4th of June.

If you are unable to print your resort entry pass or arrive at the ticket box (Howman's Gap) without your printed pass you will be subject to an additional charge of $6.50 per day, as the online discount will
be void. No cash will be accepted, credit card only.
What does the Resort Entry fee pay for?
Resort Entry fees are an important part of resort operations, funding essential services such as: Ski Patrol, Snow Clearing, Cross Country Grooming, Guest Services, Information and Public Spaces, Transport and Parking and most importantly, Waste and Environmental Management.

Right now, as we are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy what looks to be a great season for snow, the reality is that we are all going to have to adhere to a changing set of rules that we have not had to contemplate before. And the consequences of not obeying these rules will be catastrophic - not only for your wallet and the bank balance of the business that is trying to help you – but potentially your health and that of your kids or family.
This belief “I have a right to…” is absolute crap. The only thing anyone of us has going for us is the intelligence to understand that you/we have a responsibility. We are responsible for every action we take during every waking hour – and even for the actions we take in bed. We are responsible – and we have a responsibility to our fellow man to make sure he/she is cared for – is not endangered by our stupid actions – is not compromised by our greed – is considered as an equal – because that is the reality.
The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred.
To watch a father – with son – lift the rope and ski on to the NASTAR course when it is closed, or a Mercedes driver reverse into a spot in Parallel Street in front of the Garbage Receptacle which says ‘No Parking’ – are just examples of people thinking (stupidly) that the rules don’t apply to them. Well guess what – this season is going to be just a little bit different.
New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’

ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.

Mount Beauty Service
• To make it financially feasible, many venues are providing two sittings, with each sitting only able to be around 1.5hours. Then the whole place has to be cleaned prior to the next sitting.
• Strict closing times must be adhered to enable deep cleaning by staff.
Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
After the Northern Hemisphere snow resorts closed early because of COVID-19, the world will be watching the Australian Snow Resorts to see how well we handle this situation. Therefore team, we are on the world stage (better than Eurovision). We can, by working together and respecting each other, set an example that the rest of the world can follow. The fencing came down at the Mount Beauty Skate Park over the weekend, giving the town’s keen skaters, riders and scooters the chance to test their skills against the new elements. The existing park has been upgraded and extended to allow advanced riders and skaters to hone their abilities.

Ms Stacey said the Friends of Mount Beauty Skate Park (FMBSP) were instrumental in petitioning and raising funds for the upgrade, and helping to fine tune the design of the park.

“We’re proud to be working with Al Taylor from Al’s Skate Co. in Wodonga to provide instruction on skateboard and scooters for local people to maximise their enjoyment on the new elements of the skate park.

After an extended Term One holiday break and six weeks of learning remotely, Tuesday 26th May was the first day of classes for our senior students. Students in Years 11 and 12, plus the majority of Year 10s completing a senior subject, and a handful of other students unable to be supervised at home, all returned to school and to a changed routine. Regular class times have resumed for these students, however there are changes, such as sanitiser at every entry point, extended time before class to wash hands and a classroom cleaning routine that teacher and students are expected to follow in order to help keep everyone safe and well. While this is going on at school, students in Years 7-10 are continuing to learn remotely from home, set to return on Tuesday 9th June.
Teachers, students and parents have all learned a lot during online learning, in a very short time. Attendance was initially high, but as the weeks dragged on, this dropped a little. Overall, we were continually impressed at how students continued to engage with their teachers and continued to complete meaningful learning. There have been many positives to come out of the remote learning experience, such as students learning about how they learn best, how to learn by themselves and structuring their own learning time. After so many years of teaching and constantly hearing students say they prefer to be at
home, it is amazing to see the opposite, with students generally happy to be back! All we need now if for that attitude to continue well into the future!

Elene single-handedly raised over $1000 and shared the donations between the three local fire brigades (Tawonga, Mount Beauty and Falls Creek). This lead to nice deserved recognition in the community and several thankyou letters from the secretary and Chiefs of the local CFA's. •
Winter is now upon us at Falls Creek. Every year the CFA attends more than 2000 Structure Fires in Residential Buildings across Victoria. Common causes of Structure Fires are unattended cooking facilities, faulty electrical equipment and fires caused by heating equipment such as wood heaters and boilers.
Any structure fire has the potential to harm guests and residents no matter how small or large the building. The greatest risk to life from fire at Falls Creek is during the winter period. Compounding this risk is the
likelihood that people are unfamiliar with their specific location, environment, density of accommodation and the harshness of the external environment should a building need to be evacuated.
Effective preparation and planning for evacuation can significantly reduce this risk. An effective Fire Evacuation Plan is simple to develop and easy to implement during an emergency. A Fire Evacuation Plan must include:
1. A system of warning building occupants (typically a smoke alarm or fire system) to ensure all occupants evacuate as soon as required.
2. Actions to take on leaving a building.

This publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.
Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’
As an example of costs, just from your editor’s experience, is like this. Thirty five years ago, the cost per hour of a simple Lama Helicopter to swing lift towers in to place was $1000 per hour – without the fuel component. To run a modern, fully equipped, fully fitted out Augusta Westland AW 139, complete with highly trained pilots and paramedics around the countryside is not a cheap exercise. Think about it!!

I had been thinking about cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need it but had a few minutes free so opened my laptop and joined online in the car park of the campsite. A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. The Recall. Being able to call your dog back from any potentially dangerous (or non-dangerous for that matter!) situation is the most important of all obedience cues to teach your dog. Stopping them chasing a roo or running across a busy road might save their life. So here's a simple breakdown. The essence is that you must be more exciting to the dog than what’s happening in the environment.
1. Start with a low distraction environment - like your dining room or backyard. Wait until your dog is distracted. Call his name. When he looks at you say “Come” and run excitedly backwards and when he reaches you, deliver a high value treat to him. It might be hot chicken skin, ball play or praise - whatever floats his boat. Repeat for five minutes a day. Don’t repeat “Come” over and over, or you'll train him to wait for the 10th “Come” before he does it.
2. Once you achieve reliability at this level, take it on the road - to an environment like the park and try the same thing. Having him on a long lead may assist.
3. Once the “Come” command is reliable you can gradually fade the treats, or not, as you please. But never forget the secondary reinforcement of praise every time.
4. Never Ever punish your dog if he is tardy in coming back. This is counter-productive!
5. Consider a “Life reward.” Example: Call

him back and put him in the car - then as a life reward, let him out again. This keeps him guessing that he may not actually be ending his play session and increases the chances of him coming to you.

Having insulated and thick curtains in your house helps to keep the heat from escaping from your windows and cold air seeping in. They are great to keep your house warm overnight, but if the day is cloudy and rainy keep the curtains closed when you go out and about, so the cold air stays in.
Think about which rooms you don’t use in your house and keep the doors closed. When the heater is going, you really just want to focus on the room you will actually be in, like bedrooms and the living room. Keeping the heater on for the whole house will make those bills skyrocket and is certainly not kind to the environment. •

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
