Words cannot express how grateful we at Cape May MAC are with the outstanding support from our residents and visitors, who have come to our historic sites this past summer. Although state regulations reduced our capacities for tours at our historic sites, on trolleys and even on walking tours, virtually all were either sold out or nearly so. Our creative and versatile staff created new programming and partnerships, including private golf cart tours, new tours of the Physick House Museum, and promoted more of our charter trolley tours for whole house rentals and those quarantining on vacation together. The 31st Annual Cape May Music Festival is still ongoing. Instead of the customary 12 live performances, we’ve presented a hybrid of both virtual performances with live Q&A Zoom sessions with the conductors immediately following (the final virtual performance is scheduled for Dec. 3) and two live open-air performances (the Atlantic Brass Band will perform on Nov. 21 at our annual Christmas Tree Lighting). For the holidays, while there will be no tours of B&Bs, inns or private homes, there will still be our full complement of holiday trolley and Physick House Museum tours, as well as new holiday walking tours, presented by guides in Victorian costume; and, of course, everyone can count on our traditional “An Old-Fashioned Christmas Exhibit.” So much of our programing has become virtual, and now available to audiences that may have never actually come to Cape May. Both our Museum Education and Tour Divisions have provided virtual learning opportunities for students. Of course, our historic sites continue to provide educational opportunities to those who can take advantage of them in person. We’ve made the best lemonade as possible from 2020’s lemons, especially considering all that we had planned for Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and new brand, logo and website. All told, though, we are still only projecting approximately a quarter of our budgeted revenue for 2020. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated, whether it be a donation for our operations, ticket purchases now that can be used later, or Cape May MAC Memberships, which make excellent holiday gifts, too, considering all of the benefits they include (please visit capemaymac.org/support/membership/). We’re happy to welcome you back and hope you enjoy your tour of the Physick Estate, a visit to the Cape May Lighthouse or the World War II Lookout Tower, a trolley tour or our new walking tour. Step back into the Cape May of more than 100 years ago and see how the wealthy lived and played at the town’s only Victorian house museum. Also visit the Estate’s Carriage House to see “50 Years of MAC” exhibit in the Carroll Gallery, through Nov. 1 (see page 25). The first floor of the Physick House Museum is fully accessible.

This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. This year marks Cape May MAC’s 50th Anniversary, and our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

Street vendors of the Victorian age sold some unusual foods. One popular delicacy was sheep’s feet, which were sold hot or cold. They were called trotters, and could be purchased at a low price from slaughterhouses, so vendors would buy them and prepare them at home by skinning and parboiling them, before selling them to workers in the street. Customers would then suck the meat and fat off the bones. 18

Consuming poison

In the Victorian era, arsenic wasn’t regarded as a poison in the same way it is today. Women would apply it topically as an age-fighting cosmetic, and men would take arsenic pills to get their engines revving. MAC

The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

This boat helps to illuminate life-saving history at the Jersey Shore and is an integral part of U.S. Lifesaving Service and U.S. Coast Guard history. Circa late 1800s-1930s, the Monomoys are 26 feet long and most weigh more than 2,000 lbs. The design developed from boats used to hunt whales. Come learn more at your next Lighthouse visit! The boat is a restoration project of the Cape May Maritime and Educational Center and will be on long-term display here, in association with Cape May MAC 29

Makeup was considered gauche for a society woman to wear, as it was used mostly by prostitutes. One judge even proclaimed lipstick to be similar to witchcraft, in that it had the ability to seduce men. If you were a society woman, you would probably pinch your cheeks in an attempt to give yourself a glow, and you might use cold cream to appear youthful and dewy. If you felt risqué, you might apply the tiniest amount of rouge to your cheeks.

Located in the 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. You may purchase tickets here for any tours or events. Free parking is available on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. The Carriage House is also home to the Carriage House Museum Shop, the Carroll Gallery and Vintage restaurant. The Carriage House is fully accessible.

Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly. 33

Working in the coal mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers.

What was life like in the 1890s? For one thing, there were strict rules governing bathing attire. An 1897 ordinance threatened fines or jail time to those who dared to venture on the beach between the hours of 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. without proper attire. The same ordinance forbade taking a horse or mule into the water during certain times. The ordinance did say, however, that “buff bathing” was allowed on a certain section of beach up until 6 a.m. 36

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. Tears cried for the deceased would be collected in bottles, and if you were a bachelor who didn’t leave a widow behind, you could always hire a local blonde woman to wail at your grave and make it seem like you were adored.

Hear how enslaved people in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia braved strong currents and stormy seas to free themselves, guided by the beacon of the Cape May Lighthouse. Hear why the legendary Harriet Tubman walked these streets before her freedom runs to the Eastern Shore. See the summer refuge of the formerly enslaved Stephen Smith, one of America’s wealthiest businessmen whose railroad cars ferried hundreds to freedom. Board the trolley at the Washington Street Mall information booth at Ocean Street for this 1.5-hour tour. No rest rooms are available during this tour.

A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730), was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Islandâ€™s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and colonial living back in the days.

Buttoned up as they were, Victorians believed that there was life on Mars. Giovanni Schiaparelli, an Italian astronomer, claimed that he had seen artificial waterways on Mars through his telescope. Apparently, these canals were evidence that extraterrestrial beings on the red planet were attempting either travel or commerce. These ideas were generally quite popular and taken seriously by the public, and surprisingly, people would leave money in their wills dedicated to attempts to make contract with extraterrestrial life. 65

Cape May Presbyterian Church Jazz Vespers is back!

On Oct 18 at 3 pm we welcome the immensely popular Gina Roche to our chancel/stage! Ms. Roche is a composer, jazz vocalist and guitarist, who cites faith, hope, and the desire to make a positive change in the world, among her inspirations. See our website for details. We are also happy to announce that, beginning on Nov 1st, we will resume our 9 am traditional worship service in the sanctuary, complete with music from our talented organist and at least monthly appearances of our bell choir. November 1st is All Saints Day, so that welcome-back service will feature communion as well. For details on how we are keeping communion safe, see our YouTube channel. Meanwhile, we continue to meet for two short, sweet, and socially distanced worship services on Sunday mornings. During the remaining weeks of October, we will continue worshiping at the beach at 8:30 am. Park at our lot on Decatur Street and Columbia and walk directly to the surf from there—we are just inside the Decatur St. entrance. We will be there unless it is pouring down rain! And for the forseeable future, we continue to gather in our beautiful sanctuary at 11 am for worship with music from our Jazz Ensemble. Our sanctuary provides plenty of room for people to spread out, we will not be singing together or passing anything from hand to hand, and we will have wipes available. Times change and we may need to adjust, so please for a schedule of sanctuary worship on any particular Sunday, please check our website (firstpresbycapemay.com) or our Facebook page.
