Interpretive displays tell you about important features in each room. A costumed interpreter is available for questions. The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum withlive reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

Shrunken heads, seashells, antique weapons and clockworks were commonly collected items. The gym rat is, surprisingly, not a 20th century invention. Victorians really cared about achieving a physical ideal. And, much like the current day, it was often those with the most money who had the most time to spend working on themselves. Bodybuilding was a hobby of the elite, as were fad diets and taking up new exercise trends. Nearly 200 gyms, or fitness centers, proliferated across Europe to meet the demand for physical perfection. 28

Working in the Coal Mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers. 31

Beating the heat

Architects designed homes to maximize airflow in hopes that the occupants would be kept cool. High ceilings were not just decorative but also allowed a space for hot air to go. Coupled with large pocket windows that rose all the way into the walls above, high ceilings promoted airflow that kept air moving through each room. Adjoining rooms were yet another way to improve air circulation. All the rooms in the living areas of the Physick House join those next to them. The only exception occurs on the third floor between a bedroom and a storage room. A wide covered porch also helped to keep the Victorian house comfortable. As air passed under the covered porch, it was shielded enough from the sun to drop a few degrees. By the time the air passed into the house, it was much cooler than the air outside. Shutters and shades were also employed to keep the house cool. Louvered shutters, like we find on the Physick House, allowed air to pass through but kept out the heat of the sun. Often, shutters and shades were opened and closed throughout the day as the sun moved around the house. Many a maid was probably kept busy as she traveled from room to room adjusting the shutters to keep out the sun. 35

Among the unique spirits reported at the Physick Estate by psychic medium Craig McManus are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. They have been seen the house and one romping through the gardens. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent.

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

See the summer refuge of the formerly enslaved Stephen Smith, one of America’s wealthiest businessmen whose railroad cars ferried hundreds to freedom. Includes a tour of the Owen Coachman house, a meticulously restored antebellum home of a free Black family whose relative was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Who knew?

Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day. Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newly invented telephone. She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or near nude women. Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December, 1861. From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning. During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would-be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane. Although she treated her staff well, she did not care for Prime Minister Gladstone. Often, she would remain standing so that he had to stand too, despite the fact that he was in his 80s.

Illuminating the darkness over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay for 160 years, Cape May’s lighthouse is the third beacon to guide mariners through the tumultuous waters at the confluence of the ocean and bay. Memories and historic images abound in this exhibit curated by Ben Miller, from the keepers who dedicated their lives to maintaining the light, the MAC preservationists who restored it and all those who’ve relied upon it for more than a century and a half. Time for tea A late-19th century tea, whether served for one’s own family or for guests, was the epitome of tradition and hospitality. It was a chance to gather for some restful moments with one’s spouse and children, or it was an opportunity for refined social interaction with friends. Tea fare ranged from thin sandwiches and cakes to whole meals, and always included tea, coffee or cocoa. “Tea” in the Victorian era could mean either a simple drink, or a whole meal. Tea was an important beverage at two different family meals, breakfast and “tea.” At breakfast, tea was served and drunk without the ritual that was typical of the latter event. In the morning, tea was probably served in a ceramic teapot, while afternoon or evening tea required the use of the silver or silverplated teapot. There seem to have been two types of tea – afternoon and evening tea. Afternoon tea was a holdover from the 18th century tradition of taking tea around four o’clock, and was specifically a female event, although

the men might have joined the gathering at the end of their workday. Some families expanded afternoon tea into an entire meal, referred to as high tea or six o’clock supper. People often want to call the afternoon version a “high tea,” meaning fancy; but, in fact, “high tea” is not fancy. It is a workingman’s supper taken at about five o’clock. This served as their final meal of the day. For others, it was a small light meal that filled the gap between dinner (served at noon) and a late supper at eight or nine o’clock. The Cosmopolitan Cook and Recipe Book of 1888 stated that afternoon tea time was supposed to be “charming, when contrasted with the anxieties, formality and etiquette of the dinner table.” A hostess might issue invitations to half a dozen friends and stipulate a two hour time slot for afternoon tea. Etiquette books advised guests to stay no longer than 30-45 minutes, and converse with the other guests in a “chatty, agreeable way.”

IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister who died in 1883, shortly after the family

moved into the mansion. Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”
