Excited by CBN’s $265m, Foreign Airlines Reintroduce Lower Class Tickets Aviation stakeholders hail release of funds, seek permanent solution Say CBN's action saved Nigeria’s image

Chinedu Eze Following the announcement of the release of $265million trapped funds to foreign airlines by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the international carriers have reintroduced their lower

class tickets, better known as lower inventory in their operations in Nigeria. This came as aviation industry stakeholders have commended the CBN for releasing $265 million in trapped funds to foreign airlines, saying the

action saved the image of the country. Some foreign airlines had raised the alarm over their inability to remit their revenues in Nigeria, amounting to about $450 million. Last week, Emirates Airlines

announced that it would suspend all flights to Nigeria from September 1, 2022, over its stuck $95 million. However, the Nigerian government bowed to the foreign airlines’ pressure on Friday with the release of $265

million of the trapped funds. This development encouraged the airlines to reintroduce their lower-class tickets. The reintroduction of the airlines’ lower inventory in their booking means that Nigerians can now buy cheap tickets for

their travels. These cheap tickets were blocked by the airlines following their inability to repatriate their revenues to their countries in foreign currency. Continued on page 6

2023:Tinubu Commends Buhari’s Decision to Support APC Candidates Only a united party will guarantee victory, says Oshiomhole

Adedayo Akinwale in Abuja and Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu

has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his resolve to support the candidates of the party vying for various political offices in the 2023 elections.

This came as former National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, urged members of the party to begin mobilisation for next year’s election, noting that staying

united would be the only way its presidential candidate and others can win next year’s election. Tinubu spoke at the weekend when he received the party's National Chairman, Senator

Abdullahi Adamu, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) at the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Office in Abuja. Tinubu in a statement issued

yesterday by his Media Office and signed by Mr. Tunde Rahman commended Buhari for his loyalty and commitment to the party. Continued on page 8

PDP Stakeholders Express Outrage, Disbelief over Wike’s Anti-party Activities In major boost to his electoral chances, Atiku wins Shekarau back to main opposition party Wike’s camp wants Mimiko as PDP national chairman, prefers Saraki to lead presidential campaign Chuks Okocha in Abuja and Sunday Okobi in Lagos Some stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed outrage and disbelief over the anti-party activities of the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike, just as they have described the Rivers State governor’s demands during a meeting with the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar in London on Thursday, as unrealistic. This is as THISDAY gathered yesterday that Atiku is set to head back to the country to receive former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, into the main opposition party. Members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC), who expressed serious concerns over Wike’s demands, accused the Rivers State governor of engaging

in anti-party activities by meeting with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu and his counterpart in the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi. Following Atiku’s earlier request that the PDP leaders should refrain from commenting on the crisis within the party, the chieftains of the party opted to speak to THISDAY on condition of anonymity. The members of Wike’s camp reportedly increased their demands on Atiku during the meeting in London, which was aimed at getting the Rivers governor to support the former vice president’s bid for the presidency. THISDAY had quoted a source as saying that: “Wike and his allies demanded, among others, that Atiku put in writing, his commitment to serve for only one term if he wins, to pave the way for power shift to the South; to produce Continued on page 5
