Dentists are often challenged to provide aesthetically pleasing smiles for patients with missing teeth or teeth compromised by dental caries, wear, age, erosion or pernicious habits. The goal is to preserve remaining tooth structure and prevent further breakdown. However, dentists are also presented with the opportunity to not only restore, but to enhance these patients’ dental aesthetics. The sequential treatment steps of smile line rehabilitation are largely influenced by the anticipated aesthetic results. Topics of discussion at this course will include specific methods of crown, veneer and implant restoration, diagnostic waxing, provisional restorations as the aesthetic template, soft tissue development and sequential restoration techniques that simplify the process of complete rehabilitation. Treatment plans involving combinations of crowns, veneers and implant restorations are presented.
3.Motivational interviewing –Oral health: motivational interviewing skills for dental professionals

These half-day workshops are experiential, practical sessions devoted to the hands-on learning of motivational interview skills. Delegates/participants will learn first-hand such applied skills as: using powerful questions; listening more acutely; moving status talk to change talk; using accountabilities and acknowledgements; rolling with patient resistance; and, shifting perspectives in order to change behaviour. Our singular learning objective is focused on how to integrate motivational interviewing tools and skills into professional practices in service of having greater impact on the patient’s (and caregiver, if applicable) oral healthcare.
4.Lab work –Denture repairs and denture additions: a useful skill in daily dental practice

A broken denture or the need to add a tooth to an existing denture are common events in dental practice. For the dentist to be able to carry out the procedure in a timely manner is a great service for the patient. This hands-on course will allow participants to repair a broken denture, and also to carry out an addition to an existing denture. Principles of these techniques will be discussed, along with use of appropriate materials and equipment.
5.Ergonomics –Neck, back and beyond: preventing pain for peak productivity

Two out of three dental professionals experience work-related pain that can affect quality of life, productivity or career longevity. This research-based seminar for dentists, hygienists and assistants bridges the gap between dental ergonomics and work-related pain so you can work more comfortably, increase productivity and extend your career. Through lecture, demonstration and participation, attendees will learn how posture, movement, equipment selection, adjustment and operatory layout impact their health, and apply evidence-based interventions. Team members will walk away with techniques they can apply immediately in the operatory.
2012 sees five pre-conference programmes taking place, two full-day programmes, and three half-day programmes, which will be repeated in both the morning and afternoon. These options, we feel, will offer members more choice.

Upon qualifying from Dublin University in 1979, Eamon worked in general practice in the NHS from 1980 to 1991. He undertook an MSc (Prosthetics) in the Eastman Dental School and Hospital, where he received the Dentsply Award. Since returning to Ireland he has worked in private practice and lectures in the Dublin Dental School and Hospital. He was honoured to be President of the Metropolitan Branch of the Irish Dental Association from 2004 to 2005 and has been a member of the Dental Council since 2005. He is currently President of the Dental Council.
Janice is Consultant and Clinical Lead for Paediatric Dentistry at Barts and the London NHS Trust. She qualified from Kings College Dental Hospital and is on the Specialist list in Paediatric Dentistry. Her main research interest is in developmental defects of the dentition, in which she completed a PhD in 1995. She also has a significant role in specialist training, and has been a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee, Chairman of the Intercollegiate Fellowship Board and a member of the working party for Curriculum Development for Specialist Training in the UK.
Tim graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University School of Dentistry, and completed a general practice residency. He received his masters degree in periodontics from Indiana Unversity. He is the former editor of the Journal of the Kentuky Dental Association and is an adjunct professor of periodontics at Western Kentucky University. He is a lecturer with the ADA Seminar Series. Dentistry Today recently listed him among its leaders in continuing education. He is currently in private practice limited to periodontics and implantology in Bowling Green, KY.
Steve is a retired Captain in the US Public Health Service, and joined the American Dental Association’s Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations in 2008 as Senior Manager for Access, Community Oral Health Infrastructure and Capacity. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, he previously worked with the Indian Health Service and in community health centres before developing national programmes to recruit and retain dentists and other healthcare workers, while assisting communities to develop systems of care to increase access for underserved populations. He currently advises the US National Oral Health Alliance.
Brendan graduated from TCD in 1981, and received an MSc in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology from the University of London in association with King’s College London in 2007. He works in general dental practice in Ashford, Co. Wicklow, and dental radiology practice in Dublin. He is a member of the European Academy of Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology and the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. He has presented at a number of national and international conferences. He has published papers on optimisation and justification in dental radiology in The Journal of The Irish Dental Association
Ryan qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 2006. He worked as an associate in several practices in Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford before opening his own dental practice in July 2010 in his home county of Tipperary. He is an active member of the IDA General Practitioners Committee and has been involved in DTSS discussions with the HSE.
An independent consumer expert, Tina is Ireland’s foremost consumer champion. She dispenses consumer advice and information weekly on RTÉ’s Four Live, on RTÉ Radio 1’s Today with Pat Kenny and via her weekly ‘Smart Consumer’ column in the Irish Independent. Formerly Director of Ireland’s European Consumer Centre, Tina is the author of Your Consumer Rights in Ireland
Kevin qualified from The London Hospital in 1971. He spent 20 years in full-time general dental practice and 10 years practising part-time. He became involved in the dento-legal field in 1989, firstly as a member of the Board of Directors of Dental Protection, then as a dento-legal adviser, and since 1998 as Dental Director. He became a member of the Council (Board of Directors) of the Medical Protection Society in 2003 and is a member of their senior management team. He writes and lectures all over the world, including at seven FDI World Dental Congresses.
Padraig graduated from UCC in 2002 and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004. In 2007 he started full-time specialist training in prosthodontics in Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 2010. After finishing his graduate training Padraig worked in Montreal, where he gained further expertise on bruxism and the dental management of sleep apnoea. In addition to clinical practice, he is also involved in research focusing on bruxism at Trinity College, in collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering. His work on bruxism has been published in international journals and has won international awards.
Christine graduated in dentistry and medicine from Trinity College Dublin. She completed her higher training in Dublin and worked as a senior lecturer/consultant in oral medicine in the Dublin Dental School and Hospital. She then took a senior lecturer/consultant post in the dental school in Cork. She served on the Irish Dental Council from 2005 to 2010 and was Chair of the Education Committee. She has served on the Board of the Faculty of Dentistry in the RCSI, was recently re-elected to this board and is current chair of the Education Committee.
Nick graduated in Newcastle, and completed his MFDS at RCS Edinburgh and restorative higher specialist training at the Eastman Dental Hospital. He completed an MSc in conservative dentistry in 2006, and obtained the intercollegiate specialty fellowship examination in restorative dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008. He maintains a private practice in Hampshire. He is currently a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Clinical Lead in Prosthodontics at the Eastman Dental Hospital and a tutor and lecturer for the Royal College of Surgeons FGDP Diploma in Restorative Dentistry.
Don has a PhD in health sciences and over 25 years’ experience as a professor in Canadian universities. He is a certified professional coach trained and accredited with the Coaches Training Institute and the International Coach Federation, a widely published author, an experienced presenter, and runs a small individual- and relationship-coaching practice.
Jennifer is a health behaviourist and certified professional life coach accredited with the Coaches Training Institute and the International Coach Federation. She is a published author, workshop facilitator, and award-winning researcher and university professor. She has experience working with and presenting to individuals and groups.
Bethany is a physical therapist, dental ergonomic consultant and author of the book Practice Dentistry Pain-Free: Evidencebased Strategies to Prevent Pain and Extend your Career. She is CEO of Posturedontics®, a company that provides research-based dental ergonomic education, and clinical instructor of ergonomics at OHSU School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon. She lectures internationally and has provided expertise on dental ergonomics to faculty and students at numerous dental universities. Bethany has been widely published in over 50 peer-reviewed dental journals and has developed patient positioning and exercise videos specifically for dental professionals.
John graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1974. A scholarship from the American Dental Society of Europe enabled him to study at Indiana University, where he graduated with a masters degree in paediatric dentistry in 1977. He obtained a Masters Degree in orthodontics from the University of Washington in 1986. In 1989 he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Paediatric Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the RCSI and is currently Vice Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the RCSI. He is in private practice in Dublin and Naas.
Simon graduated from Cardiff and spent five years in general dental practice. He completed three years in oral and maxillofacial surgical units before returning to Cardiff to undertake orthodontic specialty training. He completed consultancy training in Birmingham Dental Hospital while undertaking a diploma in healthcare management. He teaches orthodontics in the Dublin Dental Hospital and examines for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Membership in Orthodontics. He is Chairman of the RCSI’s Othodontic Advisory Committee. He works as a consultant orthodontist in St James’s Hospital, Dublin, and holds private clinics in Dublin and Dunshaughlin.

DR JOE MOLONEY AWARD –TABLE DEMONSTRATIONS
Applications are invited from all registered delegates wishing to present Table Demonstrations and Poster Presentations at the Annual Conference 2012. Closing date for receipt of applications is March 2, 2012. The Organising Committee will review all applications and reserve the right to accept or reject any application. It is hoped that a multiplicity of dental interests will be covered.

This award will be given to the presentation judged as Best Table Demonstration by a panel of judges. A magnificent glass trophy will be awarded in perpetuity. We are also asking all those who are willing to present to note that the format specifies a practical demonstration that will recycle in five minutes or less rather than a mini-lecture presentation. A poster presentation, while welcome, will not be eligible for the award.

Tony Costello Memorial Medal
The competition for the Tony Costello Memorial Medal will be judged on a Table Demonstration or Poster Presentation of not more than 10 minutes on a subject applicable to general dental practice. Each of the three dental schools may enter a team of a maximum of two people. The presentation will be judged on: n clinical usefulness; n academic content; n presentation; and, n originality.
The Irish Dental Association will make a grant of € 400 per demonstration.
