The IDA’s Annual HSE Dental Surgeons Seminar 2016 heads to the midlands and the beautiful town of Athlone on the banks of the Shannon
It is indeed a great privilege for me to be the Group’s President for 2016-17 I look forward to the year ahead and to representing you, the members
This year’s event will take place on Thursday and Friday, October 6 and 7, at the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone
We see a slight change in the format for 2016 which, I hope, will mean even greater attendance and offer better ways of learning
Thursday’s programme will be similar to previous years, with clinical presentations on various topics such as the periodontal–systemic inter face, difficult extractions, an update on the Minamata Convention, trauma and or thodontic referrals A full trade show will also take place
Friday then sees a very different format to the proceedings I am delighted to welcome back Prof Avi Banerjee to continue the "MI" theme and philosophy of clinical delivery of oral healthcare to our patients This will be followed by a series of four practical tutorials, with demonstrations to smaller audiences. Every delegate will have the chance to complete all four tutorials over the course of the day: oral radiology; infection control; endodontics; and, composites
While the event traditionally caters for HSE dentists, it is by no means exclusive to the public sector GPs, specialists and all dental professionals are welcome and all are invited to attend
Finally, our Seminar social evening takes place on Thursday evening This year we are moving to a nearby restaurant for our annual dinner We look forward to a casual, sociable evening with all delegates welcome

Prof Avijit Banerjee
Avijit qualified in dentistry from Guy's Hospital (London) in 1993 After obtaining his FDSRCS (Eng), he received his Masters in Mineralised Tissue Biology, and Doctorate in Cariology He is currently Chair in Cariology & Operative Dentistry, as well as Director of Integrated Clinical Care & Conservative Dentistry, at the King's College London Dental Institute at Guy ’s Hospital
Dr PJ Byrne
PJ graduated in 1982 from UCC, receiving the undergraduate prize in periodontology He is in referral practice in Dublin in periodontology, oral surgery and implant dentistry, and has lectured in periodontology at the Dublin Dental University Hospital, Trinity College, since 1991 He is a Past Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry RCSI (20072011) and is currently President of the Irish Dental Association
Dr Mary Freda Howley
Mary Freda graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1993 and received her FFD in 1998 from RCSI From 1999 to 2002 she completed postgraduate studies in endodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and completed an MSc in Oral Science Mary Freda now works in private practice limited to endodontics in Dublin and is an endodontist in the trauma clinic in Dublin Dental University Hospital
Dr Justin Moloney
Justin qualified in 1988 and worked for 18 years as a general dentist He then spent two years as an SHO in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Sheffield and Dublin, followed by three years as an oral surgery specialist registrar leading to the DChDent (Oral Surgery) He is on the oral surgery specialist register and has also obtained an FFD (OS) from the RCSI He is in oral surgery private practice in Dublin and Waterford, and is a part-time member of staff in the Dublin Dental University Hospital
Dr Anne O’Connell
Anne graduated from Dublin and worked in the UK and USA until 2000 when she was appointed as Associate Professor/Consultant in the Dublin Dental School Anne since established the postgraduate training programme in paediatric dentistry and initiated the trauma clinic within the Dublin Dental University Hospital She also maintains a private practice limited to paediatric dentistry in Sandycove, Co Dublin
Dr Siobhan O’Sullivan
Siobhán has been a par t-time lecturer in medical ethics at RCSI since 2006 She was the Chief Bioethics Officer at the Depar tment of Health from 2010 until September 2016, responsible for drafting policy advice and legislative instruments on bioethicsrelated issues From 2002-2010, Siobhán was Director of the Irish Council for Bioethics She holds a Masters in Healthcare Ethics in Law and a Diploma in Leadership
Dr Jane Renehan
Jane is a Principal Dental Surgeon with the HSE in Dublin Nor th City Following qualification from the Dublin Dental Hospital in 1980, she worked mostly in the public dental sector, both in urban and rural settings In the mid 1990s she returned to the Dublin Dental Hospital for five years, taking up the post of Lecturer in Dental Public Health while studying for a Masters in Dental Science (1997) and a Masters in Business Administration at the Smurfit Business School, UCD (1998)
Dr Ciara Scott
Ciara completed her specialist training in the DDUH in 2005 She is a par t-time clinical supervisor for undergraduates at the DDUH and is a Fellow of RCSI This year, she completed an MSc at the RCSI Institute of Leadership and developed a clinical protocol for the timing of treatment for children with prominent front teeth In June 2016, Ciara became the first Irish-trained or thodontist to pass the membership examination for the European Board of Or thodontics

Dr Nick Armstrong
Nick is a former HSE dental surgeon in Dublin, and a current IDA Patient Safety Committee member He graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1974 and worked in private practice in the UK for 16 years
Dr Andrew Bolas
Andrew received his BDA from Queen’s University in 1991, his FFDRCSI in oral surgery in 1994, his FDSRCSI oral surgery and oral medicine in 1995, and an MSc in dental radiology in 2000 He moved to Sligo in 1997 and is employed with the HSE He is a past President of the IDA
Ms Siobhan Carrigan
Siobhan is a senior dental nurse working since 1998 with the Health Ser vice Executive in the Dublin Nor th City area Following qualification from the Dublin Dental Hospital, Siobhan has mainly worked in the public dental sector In 2009, she completed her MBS in Safety and Health at Work Her thesis was on infection control in a dental surgery
Dr John Dermody
John graduated from UCC in 1987 and worked as an SHO in the Dublin Dental Hospital until 2013 He has a Speciality Cer tificate in Endodontics and an MS from the University of Maryland He runs a practice limited to endodontics in Dublin
Dr Michael O’Sullivan
Michael was appointed as a Senior Lecturer/Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Special Dental Needs) in 2001 at the Dublin Dental University Hospital He is currently the Director of Teaching and Learning (Postgraduate) and Director of the Graduate Prosthodontics (DChDent) Programme at the Hospital His research interests include developmental dental anomalies and qualitative evaluation of prosthodontic options and management
