Ableworld unveils dementia bays

Mobility retailer Ableworld has introduced dedicated ‘dementia care’ bays to its stores. The thoughtfully curated section has been designed to make shopping easier for people living with dementia, as well as their carers.

Products in the dementia bay are selected to support daily living while remaining simple and easy to use. A key feature is the considered use of colour: solid, high contrast shades enhance visibility and highlight important items.

Red draws attention to key objects, while blues, greens and yellows promote calmness and clarity. Busy patterns are avoided, and purple, widely recognised as the colour of dementia awareness, helps raise understanding of the condition.

Each bay also includes a take-home leaflet offering guidance on where to find further advice and support. Although still in the early stages of development, Ableworld says that the dementia bays and product range have already been warmly received in stores.

Mobility scooter manufacturer Scooterpac has launched the Savvy Spright, a compact 4mph pavement scooter. The new model has been developed to support dealers targeting more price-conscious end users, particularly those beginning their journey into being a mobility scooter user or seeking a more manageable alternative to larger 8mph models.

DRIVE MEDICAL LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE

Drive Medical, formerly Drive DeViIbiss Healthcare, has launched a new UK website to strengthen customer experience and channel clarity. The new website is a strategic digital transformation, the firm states, that aims to strengthen customer experience and clarifies the company’s distinct channel propositions across the mobility, care home, hospital and community equipment sectors. ABLE2 AND UCCELLO TEAM UP

Daily living aids specialist Able2 has again been named the exclusive distributor of a familiar product on the daily living aids scene, the Uccello Kettle. The Uccello Kettle continues to be a popular choice for those looking for safer ways to handle boiling water – for themselves or for their loved ones. HANDICARE TRANSITIONS TO NEW BRAND

With a growing product portfolio of not just stairlifts, but platform lifts and homelifts too, accessibility manufacturer Handicare is starting the brand transition to Savaria. In a move that will further align the European business with its North American parent company, the brand evolution will be gradual and started with a legal entity name change earlier this year. The natural progression follows the introduction of more Savaria products into the accessibility giant’s portfolio in Europe. The Savaria Multilift platform lift and Savaria Luma homelift were both brought to market last year, and more products are set to be launched throughout 2026.

RHÔNE ACQUIRES INVACARE AND DHG

Private equity firm Rhône has completed the acquisitions of Invacare Holdings (Invacare Europe and APAC) and Direct Healthcare Group (DHG) and will be combining the two businesses and associated brands to create DHCare.

DHCare is expected to be one of the international leaders in designing, manufacturing and distributing medical devices in the mobility and post-acute care sectors. The acquisition was completed on January 30 following discussions over several months.

Take a Strutt

Singapore-based robotics company Strutt has launched a first-of-itskind smart everyday vehicle that melds the advanced features of a modern electric vehicle with a powered wheelchair.

The Strutt ev¹ enters the market with significant industry recognition, having received both the 2025 Red Dot: Luminary and the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) ‘Best of Innovation Award’ in the ‘Vehicle Technology and Advanced Mobility’ category.

At the core of the ev¹ is the evSense system, which delivers 360-degree environmental awareness through a fusion of high-performance sensors.

The ev¹ also boasts advanced auto-pilot features. A ‘pathfinder’ features enables users to select destinations on-screen, allowing the vehicle to navigate complex or constrained environments autonomously. To match its intelligence with physical capability, Strutt features a ‘quad-drive system’ which includes four independent motors and a precision suspension system to help the ev¹ maintain stability, even across uneven terrain.

The ev¹ can be seen up close at Naidex on Stand N-M12.

Cutting a dash

Mobility equipment supplier Dash Rehab has launched the Dash Sleek Rollator, a lightweight and compact mobility aid engineered from lightweight aluminium alloy.

Easy to manoeuvre and available in blue and red, the rollator folds quickly for storage and transport. Its compact design and smooth handling make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The rollator features a locking brake system for controlled movement, an integrated seat and supportive backrest for comfortable resting and adjustable handlebars.

Practical details are built into too, with a shopping bag and a walking stick holder for added convenience.

Lifting made easy

Portable mobility specialist eFOLDi has launched the eFOLDi Lifter, a portable electronic lifting platform, designed to support eFOLDi customers who find it difficult to load a foldable mobility scooter into a car boot.

Powered using the eFOLDi scooter’s battery and operated via a handset controller, it’s a practical add-on for anyone who wants extra assistance at the point of loading, particularly where lifting, grip strength, or awkward angles are a challenge.

Supplied with a protective blanket to help prevent scuffs to the vehicle during use, the Lifter is compatible with the brand’s Lite, Explorer, and Compass models.

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE Powerchairs

Wondering which powerchairs are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Rhodes by Roma Medical

"As we all know, customers come in many shapes and sizes and have very different expectations from the power chair of their choice.

“We often refer to basic Class 2 power chairs as an introductory chair or a general purpose chair, but that does not mean that they are inferior in any way. In fact often they need to be more versatile.

“In this class we really like the Roma Rhodes power chair for its modern styling and robust performance. It has a modern styling and great range of up

to 13 miles. The ability to fold and weigh just 18kg means it ticks the box for transportability but is still equipped with all-round suspension to give a really smooth ride. The lithium battery, at just 1.86kg, is easily managed if off board charging is required.

“Added to the quality of the product we really like the enthusiastic support from the company. Roma is evolving from the old school into a renergized force to make life as a retailer far easier.”

Q300R by Sunrise Medical

“We feel the Sunrise Medical Q300R is a very well-designed powerchair that genuinely supports independence.

“Versatile and user-friendly, for us, the Q300R is the only rear wheel powerchair that strikes the balance between high clinical need, performance, and practicality. It’s compact enough to manoeuvre in tight indoor spaces, yet robust and stable enough to handle outdoor

journeys with ease as the suspension does a great job on uneven surfaces, especially over our Scottish potholes!

“The Sedeo seating system is highly adjustable with just one allan key, making it easy for us to tailor the chair to various posture requirements.

“It is also available with R-net and LINK control systems which means its customisable to a wide range of different specialist driving controls.

“But having a great product is only half the success, Sunrise Medical delivers great after sales support and the service we get from our Scottish Sunrise Medical rep is second to none, and for me that makes good products shine.

“Since Covid a lot of rep support

Alastair Gibbs Managing Director at TPG DisableAids tpgdisableaids. co.uk

has fallen by the wayside, but Sunrise Medical stepped up as our business and expertise has grown. Knowing we have excellent back-up and access to ongoing training and development gives us the confidence to recommend the full Sunrise Medical range time and time again.”

WE HAVE EXTENDED OUR SUPREME ‘EX’ R ANGE!

Our ‘EX’ batteries offer higher Ah in the same size batter y box.

Our compact but powerful 12EX battery features 14Ah capacity, still in the same size box you know and love! These batteries are perfect for lightweight scooters.

D09 by KWK

“The KWK chair is a dependable bariatric-capable powerchair that balances strength, comfort and ease of use without the complexity or cost of bespoke solutions. Its built to take a user weight of up to 177kg.

“Although it’s a folding powerchair, it’s very solid and reliable. The wheelchair folds quickly into a compact footprint, making it attractive to customers with limited vehicle space. It’s designed with comfort in mind and can come with either a fixed or adjustable backrest. It runs on two flight-friendly lithium batteries, with a range of up to 15.5 miles, so it’s suitable for everyday use and has an excellent turning radius for

Nitron by Motion Healthcare

getting around indoors. There’s underseat storage, and the seats and covers are removable, which makes cleaning much easier.

“The chair is available with an 18-inch seat, or it can be extended to 21 inches. It uses 250-watt brushless motors, giving smooth, reliable performance both indoors and outdoors.

“With the batteries removed, the KWK D09 model weighs around 23.5kg, which is lighter than many folding powerchairs that can handle this kind of weight. The batteries can be removed for indoor charging and longer use. It’s available in a range of colours.”

“These days, customers are looking for the lightest powerchair to make it easier for them to put in the boot of their car. A powerchair that meets this need is the Nitron from Motion Healthcare.

“The Nitron Carbon Powerchair has only a 12.8kg carry weight and combines the agility of a wheelchair with the power and control of a powerchair. Made from premium carbon fibre, the Nitron offers exceptional strength without the bulk and weight. It’s sleek, foldable design makes transport and storage effortless. It has a range of up to 7.5 miles and a user weight limit of 18.9 stone, making it ideal for occasional use or trips to shopping centres.

“The lithium battery can be charged on or off-board, making it easy to charge when out and about or if you wish to leave the powerchair in the car and charge the battery on it’s own indoors.

“The Nitron’s compact design allows it to fold down compactly in seconds, making it easy to store at home or to put into a car boot. It folds like a manual wheelchair and has a half folding backrest making it even more compact.

“The digital display allows the user to be in control with clear, easy-to-read information at their fingertips. Everything the user needs, from speed settings to battery levels, is displayed in a modern, user-friendly format.

“We believe this is going to be a huge seller in our showroom this spring/summer with our customers.”

Magic 360 by Sunrise Medical

“For me, the Magic 360 offers the perfect balance. It performs exceptionally well outdoors while still working brilliantly as an everyday chair.

“Its versatility is central to its appeal. The Magic 360 allows users to rely on one powerchair for a wide range of activities, removing the need to transfer between chairs for different environments. That alone can make a huge difference as it saves time and energy, and enables clients to spend more time doing the things they enjoy.

“Another key advantage is the ability to change the seating to grow with the individual – it can go from a paediatric solution through to adulthood and be fitted with a range of third party seating to support different postural needs offering long-term suitability and reassurance.

“Being able to evolve the seating for the client is incredibly important.

"Strong performance, comfort, and flexibility combine to make the Magic 360 the best all-rounder on the market.

“The backing Sunrise Medical provides, before, during, and after purchase is excellent, reinforcing confidence for both retailers and end users alike.”

M1 by Permobil

“The Permobil M1 is a midwheel-drive powered wheelchair engineered to deliver a smooth, confident driving experience with excellent indoor manoeuvrability and outdoor capability. Its compact design and tight turning

radius make it highly effective for navigating in confined spaces, while its robust construction allows it to handle everyday terrain with assured performance.

“At the heart of the M1 is Permobil’s advanced mid-wheel-drive system, which provides stable traction and balanced weight distribution.

Q50 R Carbon

by Sunrise Medical

“The Q50 R carbon fibre powerchair is a standout choice for customers ready to embrace lighter days and easier travel. This ultra lightweight powerchair blends impressive performance with exceptional portability. Weighing just 14.5kg, it folds down effortlessly into a compact shape, making storage and transport refreshingly simple.

“With an impressive 800mm turning radius, the Q50 R Carbon

Users will notice the responsive handling and ability to pivot on the spot, making doorways, tight corridors, and crowded areas easier to negotiate. The seating system is designed to provide long-term comfort and support, with options for adjustable positioning to help maintain posture and reduce fatigue during prolonged sitting.

“The M1 is also equipped with intuitive control options, allowing users to customise

drive settings to suit their individual needs. This adaptability helps users achieve a personalised driving feel, whether prioritising precision in tight spaces or stability outdoors. The chair’s durable frame and quality components ensure dependable performance and long service life.

“Serviceability and maintenance have been considered in the design, helping engineers access key components efficiently when carrying out adjustments or servicing. The overall build and reliability make the M1 a sensible choice for daily use across a variety of environments.

“Highly recommended by Ability Plus, the Permobil M1 combines agility, comfort, and solid engineering.”

Graham Johnson Managing Director at Ability Plus ability-plus. co.uk

is perfectly suited to indoor living, gliding smoothly through tight spaces and narrow doorways with confidence. Comfort has not been overlooked either: a breathable backrest keeps things cool, while flip-up armrests and a centre-mounted footrest provides added flexibility and makes transfers easier and more comfortable.

“Designed with adventure in mind, the Q50 R Carbon offers a travel range of up to 12km, extendable to 20km with an optional additional

battery – ideal for those longer days out when the weather warms up. It is also IATA-approved for air travel, making it a reliable companion for holidays or city breaks.”

Trade talk

Mobility solutions manufacturer Karma Mobility will be showcasing its latest products at Naidex this month. Mark Duffield, General Manager at Karma Mobility, tells us more…

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE NEW PRODUCT YOU ARE SHOWCASING AT NAIDEX 2026?

“On Stand N-L10 we are showcasing the Agile Plus, which is a more adjustable version of our best-selling Agile lightweight manual wheelchair.

"The seat-to-ground, seat-depth backrest height and centre of gravity can all be adjusted, making it an ideal choice for users who need to configure their wheelchair.

“The seat-to-ground range is from 16” to 20”. The seat depth can be adjusted by one inch and the backrest height can be adjusted between 17” and 19” without needing any additional parts. It will be available in seat widths 16”, 17”, 18” and 20” in either transit or self-propel. The maximum user weight will be 136kg. Please come and see us if you are coming to Naidex!”

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES THE AGILE PLUS STAND OUT IN THE MARKET?

“It is part of the Soma brand, and was created to provide Karma wheelchairs without all their features at a lower price point. The brand started in Thailand, but production has moved to China recently. Having a configurable chair at this price point will make it attractive to end users and retailers.”

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AT NAIDEX?

“I am looking forward to seeing retailers and getting their feedback on our new products. We will be previewing our updated EVO Altus standing powerchair, which will be available later this year. We will also show our

mid-wheel-drive Morgan powerchair with wider off-road wheels which complement its excellent suspension for outdoor use.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MAIN HIGHLIGHTS FOR KARMA IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS?

“Launching the Ergo 3 wheelchair, which replaced a couple of established products. It is difficult to anticipate how customers will react but thankfully the product was well received by our customers.

“The main difference, apart from user lockable brakes, is that the Ergo 3 has a more reclined backrest angle and ergonomic back supports to complement our Ergo seating. The idea of a larger backrest recline is to promote a better posture where users can keep their heads up. I am hoping the new products are accepted equally as well.”

DOES KARMA MOBILITY CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE MOTABILITY SCHEME?

“Most of our power products are available on Motability. These include the I Plus Power, Robooter E40, Facon, Ergo Traveller, Blazer, Leon R, Leon F and Morgan.”

IS KARMA CURRENTLY SEEKING PARTNERS IN ANY PARTICULAR AREAS OF THE UK?

“We are always looking for partners in areas where we do not have established customers. In terms of support, we offer a reliable product with next day delivery.

"In addition, most of our marketing budget goes towards promoting Karma products online. Last month we had nearly 80k impressions from social media advertising with 2,700 clicks and 230k search impressions with 11,000 clicks to our site, where customers can find their local Karma retailer.”

WHAT DOES THE REST OF 2026 LOOK LIKE FOR KARMA?

Bigger and better!

Swindon Mobility has been a thriving retail business for nearly 35 years and recently made its biggest change yet by moving into larger and more accessible premises…

After 20 years at its Rodbourne Road location, Katie and Gareth Morris, directors of Swindon Mobility, had decided it was time for a new venture – opening a large and more accessible showroom in the city’s Cavendish Square.

It hadn’t been easy finding the location, admits Katie. “We found finding a new space very difficult as

parking can make town centres and a lot of shops not very accessible for our client base. Also, even though the building was empty it still took almost a year to take occupation.”

The grand opening of the showroom took place in June 2025 and was a really fun event, Katie says. “We were lucky enough to have lots of our friends and family along to support us, as

well as the mayor, and local radio and newspapers represented too. One of my favourite parts was the delicious cakes provided by my friend, who is a local bakery owner.”

After the Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Fay Howard, cut the ribbon customers enjoyed a range of exclusive opening discounts on products in the showroom.

Pictured at the showroom's grand opening (left to right): Jon Boon, Katie Morris, Gareth Morris, Councillor Fay Howard (the Mayor of Swindon) and Steve Law

The showroom itself offers everything from new mobility scooters, stairlifts and rise & recline furniture, to refurbished products and rental and repair services.

Large and spacious, the new showroom is better for the business, Katie says. “Our new showroom is fantastic. We used to only have a loading bay as parking and a single door entrance that was a bit slanted too so it was very difficult to get mobility scooters in and out. We now have a huge car park directly outside and a double door so anyone can come in and speak to us.”

Katie says that they like to have a living room vibe in the showroom so that customers can feel relaxed and comfortable coming in and having a chat with staff. There is no hard sales policy, and an emphasis is placed on passing customers all the information they need.

There are other advantages too, says Katie. “Another fantastic part about the move is that the stairlift side of the business was always in a separate location to the mobility shop, but now both sides of the business are under one roof.”

ESTABLISHED BUSINESS

Katie took over Swindon Mobility from her dad Steve Law when he retired three years ago. Steve had set up the business over 35 years ago after starting in vehicle adaptations and expanding from there.

Katie explains: “He worked at Skurrays, which was a historic and prominent Vauxhall car dealership and garage in Swindon, with roots dating back to the early 1900s when Ernest Skurray pioneered the local motor trade.

“Located on High Street in Old Town, it was a well-known landmark before being demolished and replaced by a

"Our new showroom is fantastic. We now have a huge car park directly outside"

supermarket. He was dealing with the Motability car adaptations. Customers would regularly comment that it was difficult to get adaptations for cars in the local area, or mobility equipment at all, so he decided to start out on his own doing the Motability adaptations on all cars, and mobility scooters too.”

Katie admits she hadn’t originally set out to work in the mobility sector. “My husband Gareth set up our stairlift business when I was on maternity leave with our first child, which I supported with the paperwork side of things. I was working part time in finance, as a tax manager at the time, so I had no experience of the mobility world at all.

“My husband and I have always wanted to run our own business, so it has worked out amazingly well for us. I am so passionate about helping people. It is a great business to be running and I feel very privileged.”

The couple had been running the stairlift business for over 10 years before they took over the business, with the aim of bringing everything together under one roof.

Combining Swindon Mobility and the stairlift business means that the husband and wife team can offer their customers a greater range of products in a larger, more accessible showroom.

DAY-T0-DAY RUNNING

On a day-to-day basis Katie says that she is usually based front of house, welcoming people into the shop and helping where she can. She also deals with the paperwork side of things, as well as the accounts and advertising.

Offering an excellent customer service to customers is a key priority for Swindon Mobility, Katie explains. “Gareth is our stairlift engineer and deals with the sales, repairs and servicing of those.

“We also have a lovely engineer called Jon who deals with servicing and repairs on scooters and we have a very recent, but fantastic, sales person called Vanessa who is joining me front of house helping with customers. We are a small but close-knit team and all great friends!"

The showroom boasts a large selection of rollators
"We like to do business with companies that offer a great after-sales service"

When they are particularly busy Katie's dad Steve has been known to come out of retirement and help out as well!

As with many bricks-and-mortar retailers Katie finds that one of the main challenges in the sector is with internet companies selling mobility products for low prices, and she says that she regularly sees customers coming in with issues relating to the products they have purchased online, which are sometimes not fit for purpose.

With that said Katie feels that there is huge potential in the sector. "The elderly population is a growing demographic and new products coming out are filling the needs of our customers really well."

BESTSELLING PRODUCTS

Swindon Mobility’s best-selling products include the Torro rollators from Drive Medical. “They are compact, lightweight and really

smooth to use,” says Katie.

Veo mobility scooters from Rascal are also popular. “With their new lithium battery variant you can get a fantastic robust transportable scooter that looks great and has suspension, while having a lightweight battery pack,” she adds.

The business enjoys great relationships with its key suppliers, such as Drive Medical, Electric Mobility and Scooterpac, Katie explains.

“We like to only do business with companies that offer a great aftersales service and parts so that we can continue to support our customers for years to come with their new products.

"We have also built a few new relationships over the last year that I am sure will develop as we grow too.”

Katie says that she sees the Swindon Mobility website as a huge asset and work is underway to update it so that it includes all the products that the business offers.

As for the future, Katie and Gareth are eyeing up possible expansion.

“We are continually looking at new avenues to go down and new products to offer. We hope to keep growing and expand to have a second shop in the next few years.”

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT SOME OF THE PRODUCTS YOU WILL BE SHOWCASING?

“We are very excited to be launching a brand-new range of products at Naidex this year, and part of this new range

includes three standout innovations –Atlas 4, Onyx Pro and the Carbon Flyer – which are each designed to elevate independence, performance and design within the mobility market.

“The Atlas 4 is a true breakthrough. As the world’s first genuinely portable hoist of its kind, it has been designed to transform the way customers travel with their mobility equipment. With a lifting capacity of up to 40kg, it enables users to effortlessly load a powerchair or scooter into their car boot — removing strain, restoring confidence and making spontaneous travel possible again.

“Compact, foldable and self-installing with no nuts or bolts required, the Atlas 4 fits most standard cars and can easily be transferred between vehicles. It features an ergonomic control panel with LED status indicator, a 2.6Ah lithium battery, integrated spotlight for safer operation in low-light conditions, built-in battery indicator and a bounce-back safety function for added reassurance.

"With three adjustable height settings, a collapsible lifting arm and removable foldable boom, it combines

intelligent engineering with practical simplicity. For many customers, this isn’t just a product — it’s a gateway back to independence.

“The Onyx Pro is where performance meets prestige. This premium, roadlegal scooter delivers exceptional range, power and presence, with a maximum carrying weight of 34 stone and a range of up to 43 miles. It is designed for year-round comfort and features a luxury heated Captain seat, heated handlebars, superior suspension for a smoother ride, daytime running lights, Bluetooth speakers and a rear lockable storage.

“Coming as standard with a factoryfitted alarm, one-touch keyless start and integrated sat nav via Bluetooth, the Onyx Pro blends advanced technology with refined design.

“Then there’s the Carbon Flyer powerchair, which represents a fresh evolution in powered mobility. Crafted from ultra-lightweight carbon fibre and weighing just 11kg, it delivers remarkable strength in an incredibly portable frame. Supporting users up to 16 stone, it is perfectly suited to travel, shopping trips and everyday outings.

“What truly sets the Carbon Flyer apart is its contemporary, lifestylefocused design. Moving away from the traditionally clinical appearance of many powerchairs, it offers a sleek, modern aesthetic that feels discreet, stylish and confidence-boosting. Intuitive joystick controls, adjustable footrests and armrests, intelligent magnetic braking, 360-degree rotation and manual/electric dual mode ensure practicality matches performance.”

ARE YOU PLANNING ANY LIVE DEMONSTRATIONS/SPECIAL EVENTS WHILE YOU'RE THERE?

“Yes, we’ll be keeping things very hands-on. Throughout the show, visitors can stop by the stand at any

time and one of our team will happily demonstrate the products, both our brand-new launches and our established range.

“We’ll be showing how products operate in real time, talking through key features and answering questions as they come up. Most importantly, visitors will be encouraged to try everything for themselves. Whether it’s testing comfort, handling, controls or practicality, we believe the best way to understand a product is to experience it directly.”

MONARCH MOBILITY HAS BEEN REBRANDING OVER THE LAST 12 MONTHS – CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS?

“Over the last 12 months, our rebrand has been a deliberate strategic step aligned with the scale and direction of the business. As our product portfolio has expanded and our ambitions have grown, it was important that the brand reflected the quality, innovation and professionalism behind it.

“We introduced the tagline ‘You Deserve More’ as a clear positioning statement. For us, it represents higher expectations in product design, reliability, presentation and overall experience. It signals that we are not competing purely on price, but on value, differentiation and long-term credibility within the mobility sector.

“The visual refresh included a modernised identity, redesigned brochures and trade materials, more cohesive digital assets and clearer product segmentation. We’ve placed strong emphasis on improving how our range is presented to the market, making it easier for trade partners to understand the positioning of each product and confidently communicate

its benefits.

“Importantly, the rebrand was not just aesthetic. It reflects a broader shift towards innovation-led growth, improved structure and a more clearly defined market position.

"As we continue to introduce new products and elevate the overall quality of our offering, the updated brand provides a stronger platform for sustainable growth and long-term partnerships within the industry.”

MONARCH MOBILITY IS A PROUD FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT ITS STRUCTURE AND THE KEY PEOPLE THAT FORM PART OF MONARCH'S STORY?

“Our family-led leadership structure allows the business to remain closely directed and strategically aligned. With senior leaders actively involved in the day-to-day operation, decisions are made quickly, standards are closely monitored and accountability sits firmly at the top.

“One of the key advantages of being family-run is that there is a genuine long-term commitment to the brand as we are building for the future, not short-term gain. That means investing carefully, planning sustainably and maintaining strong, consistent relationships with partners, all while ensuring stability and continuity remain at the heart of the business.

“Stacey Fullalove, UK Director, alongside myself as Group CEO, are driving significant positive change within the UK business. Together we are focused on strengthening internal systems, improving efficiencies and streamlining existing processes to create a more scalable and structured operation.

The Carbon Flyer powerchair boasts a lightweight frame
Steel Charcoal Mink Cocoa Plum Aqua Denim Jute

“This includes refining workflows, enhancing reporting, improving stock control and ensuring the infrastructure is robust enough to support continued expansion. At the same time, Stacey plays an active role in supporting the development of the USA market to ensure both territories remain aligned in strategy, standards and brand direction.

“Kane Fullalove, USA CEO, is leading the growth of Monarch Mobility in North America, establishing the brand, building relationships and driving commercial development within that market. His role is focused on positioning Monarch as a credible and competitive player internationally, while maintaining consistency with the group’s wider objectives.

“Drew Fullalove is the latest member of the family to join Monarch Mobility, stepping into the role of Operations Manager. His primary focus is on the retail side of the business, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, improving fulfilment processes and supporting customer experience. His involvement strengthens the operational backbone of the company and reflects the continued generational commitment to the brand.

“Together, this leadership team blends operational focus, strategic growth and long-term stability — ensuring Monarch Mobility continues to evolve while remaining grounded in strong, accountable family leadership.”

HOW HAS MONARCH BEEN STRENGTHENING ITS UK OPERATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE?

“Over the past 12–18 months, strengthening our UK operational infrastructure has been a major focus for the business.

"As volumes increase and the product range expands, we’ve been

very conscious that the systems behind the brand must be as strong as the products themselves.

“Internally, we’ve streamlined workflows across sales, warehousing, fulfilment and aftersales to improve communication and reduce inefficiencies.

"Clearer reporting, improved stock forecasting and tighter inventory control have all been introduced to give greater visibility and consistency.

"We’ve also refined dispatch and documentation processes to improve accuracy and turnaround times, ensuring our trade partners experience reliability from order placement through to delivery.

“A key development launching soon is our new trade portal, which will sit within the Monarch Mobility website. This dedicated platform will allow trade partners to view their previous order history online, place new orders directly, and access up-to-date product ranges and current pricing in real time. The aim is to provide greater transparency, convenience and control, making it easier for retailers to do business with us.

“Overall, our focus has been on building a scalable, structured and efficient UK operation that supports growth while delivering a more seamless and professional experience for our B2B network.”

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW MONARCH WORKS WITH ITS TRADE PARTNER NETWORK?

“Working closely with our trade partner network has been a major focus for us, particularly as the brand continues to grow. We recognise that strong, long-term dealer relationships are built on more than just supplying products — they’re built on margin protection, differentiation and support.

“At the end of 2025, we introduced our Exclusivity Club, designed to give selected trade partners access to container-based trade opportunities, enhanced margins and product differentiation.

"The objective was to create a more structured partnership model that rewards commitment and provides retailers with something genuinely distinct in their local markets. The response has been extremely positive, particularly from dealers looking to

protect pricing and stand out from competitors.

“Beyond the Exclusivity Club, we are continuing to invest in tools that make it easier and more profitable for retailers to work with us. As mentioned, our new trade portal is launching soon, giving partners the ability to place orders online and access live product information. This will improve transparency and efficiency while reducing administrative friction.

“In addition, 2026 is bringing an expanded product portfolio, including several new launches across different categories. These products are designed to give retailers fresh opportunities to attract customers and increase average order values. We are also focusing on improved marketing support and clearer product positioning to help partners confidently present and sell the range.

“Overall, our approach is simple: we want our trade partners to feel supported, protected and excited about working with Monarch. The aim is not just to supply products, but to build structured, profitable and long-term partnerships.”

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT MONARCH MOBILITY'S PLANS TO EXTEND ITS OPERATIONS INTERNATIONALLY?

“Yes, international expansion is very much part of our growth strategy. Our immediate focus has been the USA, where we have established leadership on the ground to build the brand, develop distribution channels and introduce the Monarch portfolio in a structured way.

“The US market represents significant opportunity, particularly for innovative and differentiated products, and we are approaching it with a long-

term, infrastructure-led mindset rather than a short-term export model.

“Alongside this, Monarch Mobility International is now operational across Europe. Currently, the Atlas 4 hoist is available within the European market, where it is generating strong interest due to its unique positioning and practical application.

“The wider Monarch product range is scheduled to roll out across Europe later in the year. This phased approach allows us to ensure compliance, logistics, stockholding and partner support structures are properly in place before introducing the full portfolio.

“Overall, our international expansion is being handled carefully and strategically by focusing on key markets

initially, ensuring product readiness and infrastructure alignment, and building sustainable distribution partnerships that mirror the structured approach we’ve implemented in the UK.”

HOW DOES THE REST OF 2026 LOOK FOR MONARCH MOBILITY? CAN YOU PROVIDE ANY HINTS ABOUT MORE NEW PRODUCTS?

“The remainder of 2026 is shaping up to be one of our most progressive years to date.

“We began the year by launching into the USA at Medtrade in March, which marked a significant milestone for the group. From there, our focus moves to Naidex in the UK, followed by the Motability Show in Birmingham in May, and then Rehacare in September.

“Each of these events gives us the opportunity to showcase our expanding range, strengthen relationships and introduce new innovations to both domestic and international audiences.

“In terms of products, 2026 will see the continued rollout of our newly developed range, with further additions planned across different categories.

"Visitors to the upcoming shows can expect to see ongoing innovation, refinement of existing models and continued emphasis on portability, performance and premium design.

“Operationally, we will also be visiting China in person to strengthen our partnerships with existing manufacturers.

"These visits form part of our continuous quality control and improvement programme, ensuring that product standards, consistency and innovation remain aligned with our long-term expectations.

"Maintaining close, in-person relationships with our manufacturing partners is an important part of safeguarding supply chain stability and quality assurance as we scale.

“The rest of 2026 is focused on international growth, product development, infrastructure strengthening and deeper engagement with both retail and distribution partners. It’s a year of expansion — building momentum while ensuring the foundations remain strong.” monarchmobility.com

Mobility, and quality of life

How important is mobility to quality of life? How can we measure the value of any interventions?

At last November’s Oceania Seating Symposium in Rotorua, New Zealand, Dr Nathan Bray, a healthcare economist from Bangor University in Wales, presented the outcomes of his study of a new way to define and measure mobilityrelated quality of life. The resulting new tool, MobQol-7D, is described in this article, together with material from Dr Bray’s presentation on his health economist’s perspective on why outcome measures matter in assistive technology provision.

Health economics, as a discipline, examines the use of resources, their efficiency of use, and their value to healthcare. It uses economic valuation methods to measure costeffectiveness and value for money.

Most country’s health services have less money available than everyone is wishing for, or is able to spend. However, having larger sums does not necessarily mean better outcomes.

Comparing the US with other parts of the world: health expenditure in the US is $12,555 per capita as compared with $6,372 in Australia or $5,493 in the UK. Despite this, in the UK, life expectancy is nevertheless higher at 80.3 years as compared with 76.4 years in the US. Infant mortality is only four per 1,000 live births in the UK as compared with 5.4 in the US, and 9.8 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births vs 21.1 in the US. And for a final statistic, avoidable mortality from preventable causes is 97 per 100,000 population in Australia, 151 in the UK, and 238 in the US.

This data probably reflects that there is a much greater spectrum of healthcare provision in the US, between those who are well-covered by insurance etc, and those on the poverty line.

The inputs from health economists lead to economic evaluations which provide a framework for identifying the costs and benefits of different options of healthcare. Each evaluation compares the choices between competing alternatives, is concerned with the costs vs benefits, and is used to extract maximum benefits from limited resources. One of the key tools used is to measure the costs against Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs).

QALYS

If health care is effective, it must either increase length of life and/or Improve quality of life. Therefore, successful health care activities (whether curative, preventative or rehabilitative) can be assessed by what are called QualityAdjusted Life Years (QALYs).

A QALY is a generic measure of disease burden which measures a combination of quantity and quality of life. A value for perfect health, i.e. the best quality of life would have a score of 1. Extended life, over five years and then death would give a score of 5. If preventative measures were introduced that extended the person’s life for another two years, but at a 50 per cent quality of life for the extra two, that would add two years at 0.5 to the five healthy years, giving a total of 6. An

alternative intervention might offer an additional six years of life but at a 33 per cent quality of life, with the 11 total years of life giving a QALY score of 7. If the cost were the same it might be considered best to give the intervention with the score of 7 – but for the individual maybe life for six years at a 67 per cent impaired quality of life might be a poorer choice than fewer years with a better quality of life. This is where we enter the philosophical debate as to how much of the decision should rest in the individual’s hands (and then potentially extends into the opposite of extending life, by shortening it by the provision for assisted-dying).

MOBILITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Dr Bray introduced the background to his study with the data that:

Almost a quarter of the UK population (>16 million people) report having some form of disability. Mobility impairment is the most common cause of disability in the UK, with 48 per cent of disabled people reporting some form of mobility impairment. In England alone an estimated £355 million is spent annually by the NHS on wheelchairs and postural seating. However, there are limited robust economic/Preference-based Outcome Measure (PROM) data to guide the provision of mobility aids in a cost-effective manner.

PROMs such as the ‘EQ-5D’ and ‘SF-6D’ are the tools commonly used by the likes of NICE to measure QALYs for this purpose. However, due to the generic

nature of these specific measures, they often lack sensitivity in specific arenas such as that of disability.

To create a targeted assessment tool to define the concept of mobilityrelated quality of life, Dr Bray carried out research in which participants were asked to discuss how mobility and mobility impairment influenced their quality of life and health status.

Bearing in mind that ‘mobility’ means different things to different people, a questionnaire was created which aimed to cover the range from people who had restrictions in their ability to walk around, to those for whom mobility was about using a wheelchair or other aid.

The aim of the resulting tool was to find how mobility affects the interviewee’s quality of life, no matter how they moved around or whatever mobility aids they used.

MOBQOL-7D

The research assessed 15 reduced quality of life aspects that might be attributed to impaired mobility, from which seven areas were brought together to be significant. The seven were (each to be scored at one across four levels of degree of severity):

1. Accessibility (From ‘I do not find it difficult to get around my home’ to ‘I cannot move around my home’’).

2. Contribution – such as contributing at home, work, education, or in the community (From ‘My mobility never makes it difficult to contribute and do things that make me feel valued’ to ‘My mobility always makes it difficult to contribute and do things that make me feel valued’).

3. Pain and discomfort (From ‘Moving around in everyday life is not painful or uncomfortable’ to ‘Moving around in everyday life is

extremely painful or uncomfortable’).

4. Independence (From ‘I am always satisfied with my level of independence’ to ‘I am never satisfied with my level of independence’).

5. Self-esteem (including identity, confidence, and self-consciousness) (From ‘I never feel bad about myself because of my mobility’ to ‘I always feel bad about myself because of my mobility’).

6. Mood and emotion (From ‘I never feel low, sad, or unhappy because of my mobility’ to ‘I always feel low, sad, or unhappy because of my mobility’).

7. Anxiety – such as feelings of worry or stress (From ‘My mobility does not make me feel anxious’ to ‘My mobility makes me feel extremely anxious’).

The result would be a lowest possible score of 7 for someone who had no mobility challenges, to 28 for someone who had the greatest impacts from each aspect from their immobility.

The next stage might be to offer a solution for the challenges experienced by the individual (such as a new piece of equipment, a support person at certain times, counselling, etc), and the individual can then score on a range from one to 100 the degree to which that intervention might reduce their total MobQol score.

If budgets are tight, this at least can help to prioritise which intervention(s) to fund in the first place. At a later stage, the questionnaire can be repeated to ascertain whether the selected intervention had reduced the individual’s score.

THE ‘MEDICAL’ MODEL

Looking at wheelchair provision around the world, the key provision criteria are based on a ‘medical’ model which is based around aspect 1 (accessibility), probably 3 (pain and discomfort), and maybe 4 (independence), but how poorly are the other aspects (which are so important to the individual), considered? Is it because the other aspects are considered to be the realm of ‘social’ provision, or is it that they are considered to fall under ‘mental health’, and this is beyond the training and remit of mobility equipment prescribers?

Most health services are not set up to include the ‘social’ model. Despite both areas in England being under the one government department,

the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the lack of connect falls back on the Treasury’s control where Healthcare is provided as ‘free’ at the point of delivery, and Social Care provision is means tested. If all seven aspects were to be assessed and provided for around the world, the overall health and quality of life for those with mobility impairments would progress by leaps and bounds.

THE REALITY OF QUALITY OF LIFE

Returning to the broader perspective of quality of life, I’d like to end by sharing a quote from Dr Bray of a young wheelchair user who said:

“I’ve had conversations with friends who are completely able-bodied and they’ve sort of said “Do you wish you could do some of the things I can do?”, but I said “But do you wish you could put a basketball ball in the basket like I can?”. It’s like, everybody’s got things they can do better than other people. They can walk better than I can, but I can push a wheelchair better than they can.

"A good QOL for me I think is not necessarily being entirely independent, but being in charge of my own doings. So to some extent that means I’m able to move about in my chair, but in other respects where I require assistance, like I have an assistant in college, but I’m still in charge of asking him for help, asking him to get my books out. I am in charge of my own life. I’m not being dictated to by other people or really by my disability.”
