A round-up of the key trade stories for business leaders to digest

By
Prince William visited the Bristol Robotics Laboratory recently to ride a lightweight mobility scooter from local start-up Supersmith, which is using robotic technology to revolutionise scooter safety and design.
Founded by engineers Tom and Emily Morgan and robotics expert
Dr Fred Russell-Pavier, Supersmith spent seven years developing the 3Scooter after being inspired by their own family experiences of disability. Lightweight and foldable, the 3Scooter is designed to help users go to places that a traditional three or four wheeled scooter might not handle. Its patented robotic stabilisation system
actively responds to uneven ground to help maintain balance. Riders are seated significantly higher than traditional models, allowing them to remain at eye level in conversations and feel less socially excluded.
The 3Scooter is expected to be launched onto the UK market later this year.
Mobility equipment manufacturer Pride Mobility has added three folding power wheelchairs to its Jazzy brand which are designed to enhance an onthe-go lifestyle. The power chairs – Jazzy Max, Jazzy Swift and Jazzy Injection – are all foldable, portable and comprised of durable carbon fibre. Supporting users up to 182kg, the Jazzy Carbon Ultra Max is ideal for customers seeking robust support and heavy-duty performance without the bulk. For those seeking a more compact design, the Jazzy Carbon Swift (pictured left) weighs in at 10.26kg and features a sleek, foldable design for quick storage and portability. The Jazzy Carbon Injection offers a budget-friendly alternative with user-friendly controls and a quick-folding frame. Paul Clayton, Commercial Director at Pride Mobility commented to THIIS: “By introducing a budget-friendly model, a compact solution, and a heavy-duty option, we’re focused on meeting the full spectrum of needs for our end users.”

Scooterpac has announced the launch of the Savvy Spright, a compact pavement scooter, and its latest addition to the Savvy range.

A range of up to 28 miles and a 124kg weight capacity ensures

it meets the core needs of pavement scooter users without unnecessary complexity. The Savvy Spright delivers consistent 4mph performance, while its tight turning circle supports confident handling.
Furniture specialist HSL Chairs has taken a strategic step in its retail expansion by partnering with one of Scotland’s leading home retailers, Sterling Home, to open its first concession at their Tillicoultry location. The new concession presents a focused range of HSL chairs, sofas and beds, designed to support posture, wellbeing and everyday living
By situating HSL’s specialist furniture within Sterling Home’s established showroom environment, HSL is hoping to reach new customers and demonstrate its products in a retail setting that highlights the quality and design of its collections.
Mobility retailer Derbyshire Mobility has been sold to Eden Mobility, a fast-growing provider of mobility aids nationwide. Rob Cartledge, the former director of Derbyshire Mobility, has now taken on the role of Strategic Projects Manager at Eden Mobility. In his new role Rob says that he is looking forward to growing Eden’s offering outside of the existing retail operation. Eden Mobility has been expanding its presence across the UK at pace, and currently boasts over 40 showrooms nationwide.
Mobility battery supplier MK Battery has announced that it is sponsoring All Wheels Up (AWU) and supporting the charity’s mission to make air travel accessible for everyone. AWU aims to tackle one of the biggest gaps in transportation accessibility – and works to ensure wheelchair users remain in their own wheelchairs during commercial flights. MK Battery’s sponsorship is expected to help fund All Wheels Up’s efforts to create a more inclusive travel environment, ensuring people with mobility needs can travel more freely and safely.

Wheelchair users in the UK are being invited to join the Wheelchair Collective – the first national council of wheelchair users. The initiative is being led by the Wheelchair Alliance, a community interest company that advocates for better wheelchair service provision. It is expected to give wheelchair users with lived experience the power to influence how wheelchair services are designed, delivered and improved. This pioneering council will bring together passionate wheelchair ambassadors from every nation and region of the UK. Recruitment for the voluntary regional representatives is currently underway.
Portable mobility specialist eFOLDi has announced that it closed 2025 with a record year, delivering strong double digit year-on-year growth and finishing ahead of internal targets. eFOLDi is set to introduce a ‘premier account’ model in 2026 for selected retail partners, designed to support deeper collaboration, and stronger local visibility. A new demonstration van and increased field activity have helped the team stay close to customers, whilst updated advertising and refreshed product marketing materials have strengthened the brand’s presence across social platforms.
Wheelchair manufacturer Meyra UK has appointed Gavin Hosking as Area Sales Manager – South.
Gavin’s professional background includes the assessment and recommendation of mobility equipment, focusing on clinical requirements such as postural support, pressure management, and individual comfort.

At Meyra UK Gavin will be supporting the firm’s dealer network and customers by offering tailored advice, product demonstrations, and training to ensure optimal solutions for end users.
James Malcolm, General Sales Director (UK & Ireland) at Meyra UK, commented: “It’s great to have Gavin onboard as part of our growth plans at Meyra UK. He will provide value added experience to our dealer network and bring strengthened focus to our growth strategy and future plans for the UK.”

Wondering which walking aids are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…
"The Let’s Go Indoor Rollator has rapidly become one of our most popular indoor rollators and looking at it in detail it’s easy to see why.
“With user comfort at its core, this attractive indoor rollator strikes the perfect balance between practicality, durability, and everyday usability – all qualities which our customers like.
“It’s lightweight, yet robust and is small enough for use within confined indoor spaces without compromising on strength. Its manoeuvrability is ideal for indoors, making daily tasks like navigating hallways, kitchens, and living rooms smoother and safer and helping to move items from room to room with ease.
“Unlike many larger, outdoor rollators, its compact frame folds easily for storage and transport, a feature that’s especially valued in smaller homes or even residential care environments.
“Our customers prefer it to the more traditional beige and brown indoor kitchen/dining trollies with wheels because it’s nicer to look at and practical too, designed with a beech wood frame with complimentary silver styling.

“An ergonomical contoured handle with a brake lever which can be operated with one hand completes the picture.
“Feedback from physiotherapists and occupational therapists highlights the rollator’s reliability and positive impact on customer’s mobility indoors.
“In an increasingly competitive market, the Let’s Go Indoor Rollator stands out for delivering consistent performance and enhancing quality of life –underscoring exactly why it remains a favourite among our customers.”

“The Drive Twin Handled Folding Walking Stick may look like a standard folding cane at first glance, but the addition of a second handle makes a real difference in everyday use.
“This extra handle provides valuable support when the user is standing up from a seated position or when they are lowering themselves back down, helping to reduce strain and improve confidence. When it’s not needed, the side handle folds away neatly, keeping the stick compact and easy to manage.
“Designed with convenience in mind, the walking stick folds down into four sections, making it ideal for travel or storage. It can be easily packed into a bag or stored away when not in use. The
adjustable height, ranging from 84cm to 94cm, allows it to be tailored to suit different users, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit.
“The tactile rubber handgrip offers a comfortable, non-slip hold, while the integrated wrist strap adds extra security during use. Its shock-absorbing design helps reduce vibrations, making walking more comfortable, especially over longer distances. The pivoting base adapts to uneven ground and varied terrain, providing added stability where it’s needed most.
“Overall, this walking stick offers more than basic support. It combines comfort, practicality, and extra assistance for sitting and standing, making it a reliable aid for everyday mobility.”
“As a multidisciplinary retailer we at TPG carry a range of walking aids from the basic, simple walking stick through to the high-end lightweight rollators.
“As a walking aid becomes a necessary part of the user’s daily routines it becomes a trusted 'friend' and is often given a name, as if it were their companion.

"For this reason we offer 'good', 'better' and 'best' in each style and find that the 'best' is often the favoured choice.
“Our preferred option for a four-wheeled, seated rollator is the range from Topro, which is now joined with Rollz to give a high quality offering with great UK back-up.
“In particular we find the Topro 5G is a great indoor/outdoor rollator with many stylish features that our customers love.

“It has easy-to-use height adjustment, simple folding ability, a sturdy seat and quick-release wheels as well as being available in a number of colours to personalise it for the user. A carrying basket and backstrap make it a very versatile rollator.”

With demand rising among older and disabled people for practical equipment that enables them to remain at home and live independently, many individuals are turning to specialist local retailers for informed advice.
Yet for years, retailers lacked an independent, recognisable qualification that would signal their impartial, person-centred approach to assessing customers’ needs.
The launch of a BHTA-backed Level 3 Trusted Assessor qualification in 2024 has filled that gap. This development has enabled organisations across the sector to upskill staff to a standardised, independent set of competencies long recognised within health and social care.
Trusted Assessor competencies –first defined in 2005 – are now widely used across the UK by health, social care, housing and care teams. The qualification teaches learners to adopt an occupational therapy (OT)–based approach to assessments, combining theory with hands-on practical skills.
Crucially, trainees learn how to identify when a case is complex and requires referral to an OT. Trusted Assessors are qualified to assess a person’s needs and identify the most suitable equipment and adaptations to support independent living.
Training is delivered by accredited training providers including Trusted Assessing and Care Training (TACT), an OT-led, nationally accredited provider. TACT’s OTs deliver the teaching, support learners with their assignments, run free monthly topup webinars and make additional resources – such as the Competency Framework – available free on their website. Learners complete training modules and a homework assignment to demonstrate their understanding and practical application of the course content.
Many retailers have found that the qualification not only enhances internal skill levels but also improves collaboration with local equipment and assessment pathways. TPG DisableAids in Hereford offers a strong

example. Director Alastair Gibbs explains: “For TPG DisableAids the Trusted Assessor scheme has been a real boost. We have various staff trained from Level 2 to Level 4, and it has given us real credibility with housing associations and local authorities. Those looking for a differentiator and an indicator of commitment to quality found it in our association with BHTA and Trusted Assessor.”
This credibility strengthens tender opportunities for providers supplying independent living equipment, as the qualification offers a clear benchmark of assessment quality.
Recognition is growing within the OT profession as well. Brett Gilham of Laybrook notes: “We know how busy many OTs are, so the fact that we can

demonstrate we have been trained and can provide assistance in the assessment process benefits all parties. It also means our staff across all levels have been trained to a set standard for assessing.”
Retailers are also seeing value in highlighting the qualification to the public. Dolphin South West in Devon, newly qualified, has launched a communications campaign to promote their enhanced capabilities.
Antonia Nixon, Business Support Manager, says: “The Dolphin team enjoyed the training – learning and reinforcing what they know – and now we’re keen to let people know what this means when they deal with us.”
Dolphin’s campaign includes social media and web content underlining the news of their qualifications and adding to their range of credentials.

Some providers are taking the Trusted Assessor approach even further.
In December 2025 Wenman Healthcare hosted two free training workshops for organisations across the region that provide advice to the public on independent living. Approximately 24 learners attended the two, oneday, information-packed Level Two accredited courses, delivered by Trusted Assessing and Care Training (TACT), a leading national provider. Attendees importantly represented a broad spectrum of local services, including NHS social prescribers, district housing teams, regional disability and carer charities, and homecare providers who also benefited from the opportunity to network with peers. It is estimated that the programme will help 100+ residents every day who receive advice from these organisations all year round demonstrating the potential significant
regional impact this training would have if rolled out more widely.
Participants reported a clear increase in their confidence when supporting older and disabled people. The course covered common health conditions, how local health and social care systems operate, communication skills, and key risk factors. Learners also explored a wide range of independent living equipment and typical solutions used across the region.
Confidence in the topic of independent living equipment rose from 52 per cent being fairly or very confident pre-course to 100 per cent afterwards. Both Wenman Healthcare and TACT were delighted with the outcomes.
Clare Barber, Director and OT at TACT, comments: “We are passionate about improving access to muchneeded equipment, and upskilling people working locally is one of the best ways to ensure residents get timely, accurate advice. Navigating the regional landscape of aids, equipment, and adaptations can be challenging, and understanding what’s available and how to access it can speed things up immeasurably.”
Ian Wenman, Managing Director at Wenman Healthcare, added: “People often aren’t aware of their entitlement to a needs-based assessment for equipment and home adaptations. This can ensure essential equipment is delivered to their home.
“They often struggle to know what equipment is relevant and helpful to a particular health condition.
"Families frequently want to explore additional items, and they can try a wide range—without obligation—by visiting our showroom. Our Trusted Assessors identify what’s needed and provide impartial advice, as well as providing a free home visit when required.”
The initiative demonstrates how retailers can act as local hubs for information, training and support.
By engaging organisations across

their community, Wenman Healthcare aims to speed up access to essential equipment and strengthen crosssector relationships.
The expansion of Trusted Assessor training represents a significant step forward for the independent living equipment sector. It offers retailers a recognised standard that enhances credibility, strengthens partnerships with health and social care professionals, and improves the quality of advice available to the public.
As more organisations adopt the model – and as innovative collaborations like Wenman Healthcare’s regional training hub emerge – the sector is better positioned to meet growing demand, reduce pressure on overstretched OTs, and ensure people receive timely, accurate guidance on the equipment that supports independent living.
Ultimately, the Trusted Assessor qualification is becoming a catalyst for higher standards, stronger local networks, and more empowered communities.
Members can choose from either a one-day in-person course run at their premises or opt for the live webinar version delivered over a series of three dates.
In 2026 the webinar version involves studying for three threehour live webinars running on March 13th, 20th and 27th or November 4th, 11th and 18th.
They can alternatively opt to join one of the main Trusted Assessor courses that include practical workshops, and these can be directly commissioned or accessed through TACT’s open courses running regionally.
All versions of accredited courses require learners to complete and pass a homework assignment, and once qualified assessors can join the monthly webinar top-ups for 12 months.

MSB Mobility has been showcasing its innovative mobility scooter range in a newly opened showroom…
Mobility scooter supplier MSB Mobility was established in early 2025 in Lancashire and its new showroom in Blackpool marks a major milestone in the company’s journey to take its brand nationwide.
The showroom offers customers the opportunity to experience firsthand MSB’s full range of six innovative mobility scooter models which have been designed and built by the Blackpool-based manufacturer.
MSB Mobility offers a range of “next-level” mobility solutions that are designed to blend cutting-edge technology, stylish design, and exceptional comfort, while at the same time enhanced with future-proof features to meet the needs of modern mobility users.
The company’s growing range includes both three- and four-wheel mobility scooters, each designed for safety, reliability, and comfort.
Every model has been assembled locally at MSB Mobility’s large production facility, which is located just off the M55 motorway.
MSB Mobility's focus is on mobility scooters, although wheelchairs and some daily living aids, such as walkers, are also offered alongside MSB’s other arm of the business, Mobility Scooters Blackpool, which offers hire of these products to customers within the Blackpool area.

"Our scooters present next level solutions with extremely smooth rideability, top of the range technology and modern designs"
The showroom opening was a proud moment for the founders of MSB, who are excited to bring their vision of smarter, more comfortable mobility to customers across the UK by starting in their home town.
As the head of business development at MSB Mobility, James Bates is responsible for business operational opportunities and growth –spearheading the MSB project.
He explains: “Starting MSB was a dream. Both myself, the owner of Mobility Scooters Blackpool, and the

director, Raquel Burgoyne, spoke about creating our own brand of mobility scooter and entering the UK market as we saw an opening due to competitor offerings.
“Some of our competitors are based in Europe, and what we found was that many customers were coming to us and stating that they had to wait weeks for responses, parts and servicing enquiries – so we wanted to change that.”
MSB Mobility’s scooters have been
carefully crafted with its partners in China and assembled by MSB Mobility at its UK assembly service centre just off the M55.
James explains. “We have been involved in the production and development – visiting China twice ourselves – ensuring our scooters present next-level solutions with extremely smooth rideability, as well as top-of-the-range technology and modern designs.”

James says that the location perfectly fitted their needs for the showroom: “It is easily accessible, easy to find and a prime location within a busy shopping district.”
To celebrate the opening of the showroom, the Mayoress of Blackpool, Councillor Kim Critchley, supported by her consort, Councillor Mel Fenlon, was invited along to officially open the store at its grand opening event in October.
The event was a great success with news soon spreading far and wide about the new showroom. James says that customers have been enjoying the welcoming space where they can explore the scooters, speak to the team, and experience the technology and design that goes into creating them.
James adds: “Since our official opening with the Mayoress, we have been featured extensively in local and Lancashire press. We have a marketing campaign set for the 2026 season and
aim to establish MSB as a front runner in mobility options in the UK.”
MSB Mobility, he says, is committed to leading the future of the UK mobility market by supplying products which combine innovation, comfort, and craftsmanship, all made in Blackpool.
James says: “Our very first MSB mobility scooter – the CoastRider V1 – was the initial product which we
started with in early 2025. This proved to be massively popular and sold out within three weeks, leading us to ramp up our strategies and move forward with the full range.”
The CoastRider V2 is the latest update of this model – a Class 3 mobility scooter available in black, red, white and blue. Capable of speeds up to 15mph (EU), 8mph (UK) the scooter

has a range of up to 45 miles on a single charge.
A high priority is placed on offering an excellent level of customer service to customers, James explains. “MSB is based in the UK with a full UK support network. We are open seven days a week and have our own service centre, offering servicing, upgrades and repairs with a very talented team of individuals.”
James says that MSB’s approach to overall customer care sets the business aside from its competitors.
MSB is also partnered with Ideal4Finance so that it can offer various finance options on its new mobility scooters.
Outside of the physical showroom the website is “extremely important” for MSB Mobility in terms of how it does business, James explains. “Our website
Councillor

enables customers to see the full range remotely, and get a feel of our company. It showcases the MSB brand perfectly, ensuring our key message of 'where innovation meets comfort' is propelled. Going forward James is looking forward to developing the business. He says: “We aim to establish MSB as a front runner in Mobility Solutions in the UK and Europe. Our plans are to expand and grow, reaching far and wide – offering our amazing products to as many people as possible.”

Are the terms that we use in our professional lives clear, understandable, and acceptable, or are they lazy shorthand or even offensive? What should we be using and not be using?
In this article we will look at terms we use today and also some that had been in use at one time, but have changed since, and why this has happened. In the medical world we have our own jargon, but is this to avoid offence, or just to show that we are insiders in an ‘elite’ group? How should we refer to, or converse with, our clients?
Have we become too ‘woke’ and therefore end up in unhelpful verbal contortions to avoid offense?
Let us start with an example: ‘invalid carriage’. The only place where this term is still used is in UK legal terminology, and because this is written into laws there it sticks. An invalid carriage is “a small, lightweight vehicle designed for one

The government has just opened a consultation until March 31 on the naming and classification of wheeled mobility devices: Search: 'Reviewing the law for powered mobility devices' on www.gov.uk

person with a physical disability, allowing them to travel on roads/ pavements without a licence”.
The term has long been associated with the ministry blue coloured microcars (Figure 1) which were supplied free of charge by the UK government to people with disabilities from the late 1940s to the 1970s. Early models used a 197cc engine, with later models upgraded to a 500cc or 600cc engine. Production ceased in 1976, and the last remaining government-owned models were recalled and scrapped in 2003 due to safety concerns as other road vehicles around them became larger and more powerful.
Today the legal term covers any vehicle (under a specified unladen weight) built for the use of a person with a disability. The vehicles are classified by speed and power:
Class 1: Manual wheelchairs
Class 2: Powered wheelchairs scooters (max 4mph, pavement use)
Class 3: Faster scooters powerchairs (max 8mph, can be used on roads, but must slow to 4mph on pavements).

Looking elsewhere – medical illnesses were often described based on their symptoms, their most obviously observable effects, or named after their ‘discoverer’. These have been replaced due to better understanding (e.g. dropsy, which was replaced by oedema as we understood the underlying fluid build-up, apoplexy by stroke, etc); by scientific progress (e.g. ‘infantile paralysis’ became polio, and ‘Bright's disease’ was re-specified as kidney disease); or avoiding stigmatization (e.g. french pox for syphilis).
Death certificates may have had a more euphemistic reference. In the 19th century, it was estimated that a third of adults in London had syphilis, and this led to the death of many of their children, where their death certificate recorded the result, namely marasmus (i.e. wasting), rather than the cause, due to the social stigmatization that attached to syphilis.
When I was at school in the middle of the last century, frequently one would see collecting boxes for the Spastics Society (Figure 2) outside shops, at a time when polio was still endemic. A derogatory term at the time was to be called a ‘Spaz’ if one was not physically agile. The Spastics Society was a major UK charity, founded in 1952 for people with cerebral palsy, that changed its name to Scope in 1994 because the word ‘spastic’ had become offensive and outdated, and at the same time shifting focus from a single condition to supporting all disabled people and challenging attitudes towards disability.
A number of diseases were named initially after the doctor who discovered important features of the disease. A good example is leprosy. This highly contagious disease and disfiguring bacterial infection was known as Hansen’s disease after a doctor from Norway, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who discovered in 1873 the microbe, mycobacterium leprae, that causes it. There are countless other examples, such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s chorea, Colle’s fracture, Cobb angle, Cock’s peculiar tumour, etc.
For speed, and also to show that we are “in the know”, we sometimes resort to jargon and acronyms. The danger is that the same acronym can mean something different to different listeners. After all, BHTA also stands for BioHazardous Threat Agents, as well as Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association.
Around Covid and government procurement of Personal Protective Equipment, we were all well aware of the acronym PPE. But when I was in further education, PPE stood for philosophy, politics, and economics –the degree course followed by many of our politicians! To others, in the construction industry, PPE stands for property, plant, and equipment.
On medical notes, sometimes the patient is better off not knowing! For example NBM (nil by mouth) may be okay, but what about PAFO which is short for 'pissed and fell over', UBI for
“With the shift to promote dignity and reduce stigma, we now focus on the person...”

'unexplained bar injury', TEETH for 'tried everything else try homeopathy', LOBNH for 'lights on but no-one at home', PRATFO for 'patient reassured and allowed home', and TTFO for 'told to go home'?
When we are working with the people who are our customers, or who are visitors to clinics, how do professionals treat these people with respect as individuals and as human beings rather than ‘objects’, but also being clear about to whom we are referring?
When working in the wheelchair world, to whom are we referring when we use the term ‘user’? The wheelchair standard on terminology (ISO 7176-26) recommends the term ‘occupant’ for
“Language is evolving continuously and is our major means of communication We just need to keep up with the flow”
the person in the chair, and ‘attendant’ for the carer, helper or support person.
These days we avoid the terms ‘obese’ or ‘bariatric’ in favour of ‘plussized’. We use ‘older person’ rather than ‘geriatric’. Often ‘client’ is substituted for ‘patient’, and these individuals are now referenced as being ‘concordant’ rather than ‘compliant’.
With the shift to promote dignity and reduce stigma, we now focus on the person rather than reducing them to a diagnosis or condition, aligning with person-centred care principles. Thus someone should no longer be labelled with titles such as “anorexic”, “schizophrenic”, etc, but as “a person with anorexia”, “… with schizophrenia”, etc. Rather than referring to “the blind”, refer to “blind people” or “people with sight loss”. Much longer phraseology, but separates the person from one aspect of their total identity.
The term ‘disabled’ is used lazily and has negative connotations. I’ve been offered, apologetically, the ‘disabled room’ in hotels, when all other rooms have been booked. The room was not disabled, and in fact was easy to get to on the ground floor, and had more space than a standard room. We should at a minimum be referring to the room as being ‘accessible’, or as a room adapted for use by a person with a disability. Interestingly, since it’s the majority of people, including myself, who need glasses or contact lenses, nobody refers to us as being disabled! We are enabled by the technology on offer. For children, we should take care around using the term ‘disabled’. They do not necessarily know that they have a difference from their peers, at least until they are told repeatedly by teachers and other adults, with negative connotations, that they are disabled, and in doing so become brain washed. But being different in one arena does not mean that you cannot be a great success in another.
Last year the BHTA was instrumental
in helping to get the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Access to Disability Equipment set up. It was a shame that our society is still at the stage where calling it the APPG for Access to Enabling Equipment had less appeal. Despite my quibbles about its title, it’s a fantastic initiative, and its initial recommendations will be of great value if achieved – these are to:
Develop a national strategy for community equipment
Reform funding and commissioning to focus on quality
Reduce waiting times
Improve communication and transparency with families and carers Create a national advisory board
Strengthen reuse and recycling systems
What examples do we have of updated terminology in the arena of assistive products? In the world of skin health we used to have ‘bed sores’ that got renamed as ‘decubitus ulcers’. ‘Pressure ulcers’ became more acceptable, and then with the increased scientific understanding of the causes of skin damage being equally contributed to from friction, shear, and microclimate, in most of the world (except Europe) ‘pressure injuries’ has become the preferred term.
The terminology standard, ISO 717626 (referred to earlier), has provided preferred terms (with their definitions) to try to encourage everyone to use the same term for what has been a plethora of sundry names. An example is anterior support. The following is the list of deprecated terms: anterior head strap, forehead strap, forehead support, headband, knee block, knee strap, lap belt, pelvic stabilizer, pelvic strap, safety belt, seat belt, sub-ASIS bar, backpack strap, shoulder bar, shoulder hook, shoulder retractor, shoulder strap, anterior thoracic support, butterfly strap, butterfly harness, chest harness, chest strap, H-strap, harness, spiderman strap, Y-strap, humeral strap. The term can
be qualified by stating which part of the body against which the support is placed – e.g. anterior trunk support. While on the subject of support, the same standard deprecates the use of ‘rest’ for parts of a chair or seating system which actually have a functional role, such as a back support, arm support, foot support. By using the term ‘support’ which implies an active function for the item, a more appropriate product hopefully might be selected, and more thought applied to its placement.
Language is evolving continuously and is our major means of communication. It works best when the chosen wording means the same to the recipient as the transmitter, and vice versa. We just need to keep up with the flow.
