Total recall adapted from an article by PATRICIA COHEN 1

A group of scientists, led by Betsy Sparrow, an assistant professor of psychology at Columbia, wondered whether people were less likely to memorise information that could be easily retrieved from a computer, just as students are more likely to recall facts they believe will be on a test. Dr Sparrow and her collaborators, Daniel M. Wegner of Harvard and Jenny Liu of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, staged different experiments. In one, participants typed 40 bits of trivia – for example, “an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain” – into a computer. Half of the subjects believed the information would be saved in the computer; the other half believed the items they typed would be erased. The subjects were significantly more likely to memorise information if they thought they would not be able to find it later. The experiment explores the notion that we rely on our family, friends and co-workers as well as reference material to store information for us. “I love watching baseball,” Dr Sparrow said. “But I know my husband knows baseball facts, so when I want to know something I ask him, and I don’t bother to memorise it.” “The Internet’s effects on memory are still largely unexplored,” Dr Sparrow said, adding that her experiments had led her to conclude that the Internet has become our primary external storage system. “Human memory is adapting to new communications technology,” she said. The New York Times, 2011

1 Why did Dr Sparrow set up the experiment described in this article? She wanted to A find out whether internet use affects how or what we remember. B help her psychology students to perform better at tests. C make clear that young people rely too much on the internet. D prove that search engines often come up with useless information.

DEAR LUCY based on a column by Lucy Kellaway

5

I recently lost my job and am now freelancing as a media consultant. This involves constant networking and pitching and is a bit soul-destroying. A friend has suggested that I boost my self-esteem with a bit of Botox. She argues it will make me look younger, fresher and smooth out the lines of worry on my forehead – and will quickly pay for itself. I can’t help noticing that I am looking much older than a lot of my peers, all of whom have had work done. Should I go for it? Is it a good investment? Struggling consultant, female, 48

Lucy’s answer This is a question I can answer with considerable authority, as I’ll explain in a moment. But first: is Botox a good investment? In theory I don’t see why it shouldn’t be. There has been quite a bit of research done to show that people who look good do better, mainly because they are more confident. If Botox made you more 15 confident, then you might well land new business as a result. However, this is an area where it is hard to get good advice. If you ask people, especially men, whether you should inject nasty things into your face, they will all say no (which is just as well as you wouldn’t want them to say yes, would you?). Most women say no too, even the ones who secretly sneak off to 20 dates with doctors with syringes themselves. People lie about their Botox even more than they lie about how much they drink. I only know a small handful of women who openly admit to having had this done. It would be nice if I could say that they all looked grotesque, but alas they all look annoyingly good. Thinking about this, I used to feel the same as you – 25 that if everyone else was moving the goal posts, perhaps I should too. 8 , a few months ago, I went with a friend to a doctor who shone a bright white light in my face and carefully explained how my cheeks were 30 collapsing and how the lines were deepening. Even parts of my face that I hadn’t noticed were bad turned out to be so. “You’ve got a very low brow,” she said disapprovingly. 35 The urgent work would require three syringes of “filler” at about £300 ($471) each, all lasting only nine months, with a bit of Botox around the edges. The bare minimum would cost about £1,500 a year. I looked at her peculiarly smooth, impassive face, and I considered my 40 options: looking old or looking weird. Expressed thus the answer was easy: looking old isn’t so bad. And it’s much cheaper. HA-1002-a-14-2-b / 15 lees verder ►►► In return for listening to just how10 clapped-out I am, I paid a fee of £90. 4 What made the ‘Struggling consultant’ consider using Botox according to her letter? A In her new line of business she is confronted with younger competitors. B It was pointed out to her that improving her looks might help her get more work. C She became unemployed because she felt insecure about her appearance. D She knows that if potential employers learn her real age they will not hire her. E The stress of having to find new employment has prematurely aged her. ‘This is a question I can answer with considerable authority’ (line 10) 5 What does Lucy’s authority consist of according to the text? A She has gone through a similar phase and has actually consulted a plastic surgeon. B She has personally investigated the effects of plastic surgery on people’s careers. C She is an expert at finding out which are the cheapest deals for cosmetic surgery. D She is intimately acquainted with a large number of women who have undergone treatment. 6 What A To B To C To

Tetris, trauma and the brain Adapted from an article by Tom Feilden 1

Imagine a world in which we could wipe the slate clean. No, not undo the damage our actions had caused, but rather erase painful memories of the past. It may seem like the stuff of science fiction, but researchers have made great progress in recent years in understanding the neural processes and bio-chemistry involved in memory formation. So much so that some are beginning to talk about cures for phobias and treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

2

In her work on PTSD at Oxford University, Dr Emily Holmes is no stranger to haunting imagery, or the harm such vivid flashbacks can inflict. In a remarkable experiment involving footage taken at the scenes of car crashes, Dr Holmes is using the computer game Tetris to disrupt the processes in the brain involved in laying down painful memories, dramatically reducing the impact of recalled trauma. "The biology of memory suggests you've got about six hours after a traumatic event while that memory solidifies," she says. "What we wanted to find out was whether we could do something to disrupt that process of memory formation".

3

Dr Holmes played clips of traumatic events to 40 volunteers. While one group was asked to sit quietly after viewing the films, another played the computer game Tetris. The results showed that the volunteers who played Tetris experienced about half as many flashbacks as the control group, and that those memories were less vivid or disturbing. The point about Tetris, Dr Holmes concludes, is that it employs many of the same areas of the brain ─ to do with visual processing and coordinating thoughts and actions ─ that are involved in laying down memories. "Disrupting those functions by diverting the brain's attention in this crucial six-hour window seems to dampen down the vividness of memory", she explains.

4

But knowing which areas of the brain are involved in laying down memory tells you little about the bio-chemical processes involved. To understand this, Dr Todd Sacktor and his team at the State University of New York have been investigating the glue-like role that a particular protein ─ known as KPM-zeta ─ plays in the consolidation of memory at specific links between neutrons in the brain. By interrupting the process with another drug ─ called Zip ─ Dr Sacktor's team was able to erase the memory of a mild electric shock in rats. It's the first step, Dr Sacktor claims, in chemically controlling unwanted or intrusive memories. "The key thing is that once the drug wears off, which happens within a couple of hours, the memories never come back. So it seems to be a true erasing".

It's an exciting prospect. One which holds out hope of relief for those suffering from traumatic or unwelcome flashbacks. But what does it mean for our identity and humanity? The rights and wrongs of erasing memory will be debated by some of the leading researchers in the field at a debate organised by the Wellcome Collection. Speaking on the programme is Anders Sandberg from Oxford University. He feels nobody should object to efforts to help people suffering from serious psychiatric conditions like PTSD. The philosopher Anthony Grayling points out that we do erase some traumatic memories ─ ones which are simply too painful to face ─ naturally, but on the whole it matters tremendously that we should retain our memories, even the bad ones. We are what we are because of all the experiences we've had. bbc.co.uk, 2010

11 What becomes clear from paragraph 1? People suffering from traumatic experiences A can make a new start in life if they are professionally brainwashed. B have a better memory than those who are not similarly affected. C may one day undergo successful treatment. D should take part in extensive neurological tests.

12 What has Dr Emily Holmes been doing, according to paragraph 2? She has A designed a game to help victims of traffic accidents. B established how much damage a traumatic experience can cause. C extended the period of time in which memories are formed. D tried to diminish the impact a traumatic experience can have.

13 What is said about Tetris in paragraph 3? 1 Playing Tetris will improve your capacity to remember important things. 2 The game Tetris has been developed to trigger specific processes that trick the mind. A Only 1. B Only 2. C Both 1 and 2. D Neither 1 nor 2.

14 What becomes clear about Dr Todd Sacktor in paragraph 4? A He doubts whether Dr Holmes’ research will come up with any useful results. B He is convinced that extensive tests on animals are necessary to get reliable data. C He looks at the workings of the brain from a different angle than Dr Holmes does. D He thinks that helping people overcome painful memories requires lifelong medication.

15 How does paragraph 5 relate to the paragraphs 3 and 4? A It explains why the experiments mentioned in paragraphs 3 and 4 have been done. B It gives further details about the experiments mentioned in paragraphs 3 and 4. C It puts the experiments mentioned in paragraphs 3 and 4 in a broader perspective. D It tones down the importance of the experiments mentioned in paragraphs 3 and 4.

But, like people, some dogs just aren’t that into TV, said Teoti Anderson, a former president of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. “Two of my dogs do pay attention to the TV depending what’s on,” she said. “Another one couldn’t care less.” HA-1002-a-14-2-b 6 / 15 lees verder ►►► 6

If your dog does show interest, it probably can learn from what it sees on a television, Ms. Anderson said. Exposing a pet to muted versions of everyday irritants like vacuum cleaners and doorbells, for example, is a time-tested method for reducing the animal’s fear of them. But an important aspect of the technique is amping up the volume as the dog grows comfortable. 20 , depending on how quickly a dog learns, the owner may want to hover nearby to turn up the DogTV volume.

Still, dog owners shouldn’t mistake TV time for quality time, animal behaviorists add. “It definitely isn’t a substitute for playtime with your dog,” Ms. Anderson said. “Exercise can solve a lot of behavioral problems.” based on an article from nytimes.com, 2012

Honey Money

Honey Money: The Power of Erotic Capital, by Catherine Hakim, Allen Lane, RRP£20, 384 pages

Review by Lucy Kellaway

Do good-looking people fare better in the workplace? If You’ve Got It, Flaunt It If you haven’t got it, go to the gym, get a better hairdo, plaster on a smile and then you will be able to flaunt it a bit too. This is the gist of Honey Money: The Power of Erotic Capital by Catherine Hakim, a research fellow at the London School of Economics. She argues that good-looking people do better and she calls on all women to use their erotic power against men, as a way of getting what they want – both at home and at work. Erotic Capital Hakim has clothed this bald thesis in the language of economics and sociology, coining the term “erotic capital” to cover a ragbag of attributes including beauty, sex appeal, dress sense, charm and fitness. Building on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, a French sociologist, she argues that individuals have four different sorts of assets: “economic capital”, i.e. money; “human capital”, i.e. intelligence or education; and “social capital”, i.e. contacts. The fourth asset – “erotic capital” – has until now been ignored but, according to Hakim, is just as important as the other three and may be even more so because it affects you from the moment you are born. This last point, like much in the book, is dubious. Money surely makes a big difference from early childhood too, as does intelligence. Beauty in the Boardroom? HA-1002-a-15-1-b 16 evidence / 17 verder ►►► Hakim has assembled a good deal of to show what we knowlees already: that life tends to be easier and more rewarding for the beautiful. But far from saying that this is unfair, she argues it is just as it should be: the attractive are nicer to be with, get on with people better and are, therefore, more productive. Some of the research is surprising. She quotes studies showing that handsome men are paid more, whereas you only need to look inside any large Anglo-Saxon corporation to see boardrooms stuffed with plain men. She also fails to investigate whether the relationship between looks and success runs in a straight © ThiemeMeulenhoff 18 line. I suspect that for women, erotic capital is a professional advantage only up to a point. Engels havo Oriëntatietoets  Some of the research is surprising. She quotes studies showing that handsome men are paid more, whereas you only need to look inside any large Anglo-Saxon corporation to see boardrooms stuffed with plain men. She also fails to investigate whether the relationship between looks and success runs in a straight line. I suspect that for women, erotic capital is a professional advantage only up to a point. Women who are fairly easy on the eye do well at work, but those who are outstandingly beautiful are penalised; distrusted by women and feared by men. Rehash Honey Money is an expanded version of a powerful article that Hakim wrote for Prospect magazine in 2010 and has lost as well as gained by being inflated to almost 400 pages. Nearly every point is made at least twice and some half a dozen times; even examples that seemed thin first time – such as the fact that Kate Moss and Katie Price make money from their erotic capital – are given a second airing later. Looking Good Reading the book from cover to cover leaves one with the feeling of having been clubbed repeatedly over the head. However, the experience isn’t entirely unenjoyable, nor is it without purpose. Hakim is quite right on one central point: women in the UK and the US are not brought up to make the best of themselves, as French women are. We are taught that beauty is the poor cousin of brains; we are hung up about flaunting it. This book, for all the repetition, annoying jargon and sloppy reasoning, makes one see things differently. Sitting on the Tube having just finished it, I stared at all the frumpy English women and thought what a shame it was that so few of them were making anything of their erotic capital. ft.com, 2011

The British Isles
