What do you already know? I know what a musical accompaniment is. I know what a bass drum is. I know what a verse, chorus and bridge are.

What are you going to do? You sing Love Runs Out with a bass drum part. You sing a countervoice with the song. You play a bass part with the song and combine this with the singing.

Love Runs Out is a track from 2014 by American rock band OneRepublic, from their third album Native. The band became famous from their tracks on Myspace (the forerunner of Facebook). Later they also had a huge hit with the track Apologize, in a remix by rapper/producer Timbaland. Apologize is a quiet song — a ballad — but Love Runs Out is much more raw. What really stands out is the heavy bass drum that plays the whole time... the whole time? Well, not quite. We are going to find out!

Sing the countervoice from verse 2 onwards. Do this with the whole class, in two groups. Sing the countervoice during the chorus too, but not during verse 3 and the bridge. TIP the countervoice has four sections. The third section is different. Listen carefully to hear exactly what you have to sing there.

All About That Bass is the first single by the American singer Meghan Trainor. The message of the song is that it doesn’t matter what you look like, you are always beautiful. From the song title you can also guess that the bass plays an important role in the music.

You will listen to various music styles with double bass. You practice singing hip and you practice the rhythms that go with All About That Bass.

Listen All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor know A groove is a rhythmic pattern (sometimes also melodic or with chords) that is used to accompany a song.

know A double bass is a string instrument with a large resonance box. It produces low tones and almost always plays the bass part of the music. The strings can be plucked or played with a bow.

Smells Like Teen Spirit – The Bad Plus Smells Like Teen Spirit was a huge hit for grunge band Nirvana. The jazz group The Bad Plus made their own version. The double bass plays an important role here, just as in All About That Bass.

Romanza Patética – G. Bottesini The double bass is also used a lot in classical music. It usually plays the bass part, but sometimes has a solo part. Romanza Patética (passionate romance) is a composition for piano and double bass.

Practice A Practice singing ‘hip’ Singers nowadays often sing in a very particular way: hip and trendy. You can do this too! Watch the practice video about singing hip. Practice the chorus and try to do it exactly as in the video. B Practice the hand claps Practice the hand claps. Always first count to four in the correct tempo. First say the rests together out loud. If this goes well, you just ‘think’ them. Divide the tasks: half sings the chorus, the other half claps. Then swap over. If this goes well, sing and clap the chorus all together at the same time. TIP Make sure that you stop clapping exactly on time at the end. rest

C Practice the bass rhythm Practice the bass rhythm along with the recording. Always first count in to four in the correct tempo. Make sure that you all start and end at the same instant. Divide the tasks: half sings the chorus, the other half stamps. Then swap over. If this goes well, sing and stamp the chorus all together at the same time. rest

These ‘mini-choirs’ sing between the main melody. 1 Listen to the music and sing along with the backing vocals only. 2 Divide up the tasks: who sings the main melody and who sings the background choir? 3 EXTRA Think of hand movements and/or dance steps for the backing singers. Tips for singing Make sure that you pronounce all words well. Listen to the recording! Once you know a section well, try to sing it hip, without exaggerating. Listen carefully to each other, so that you sing everything in time with each other. know A second voice is an extra voice that is parallel to the melody, but with a different pitch. EXTRA In the lyrics certain sections are printed in italics. You can sing a second voice with these sections. Listen to the second voice in the mixer and sing along with it. Leave the melody out for the moment. Then put the melody back in and see if you can still sing along. Finally sing the second voice, while others sing the melody live.

Supports the main voice (the melody). An accompaniment can consist of one or more parts, for example: chords, bass, drums and so on. Background choir Several people who sing a vocal part in the background, as an accompaniment. With long tones usually. Bass drum Component of the drum kit; the large drum that is played with a foot pedal. Bass part The lowest sounding part. Bridge A section of a song that differs from the verses and choruses in both melody and lyrics. The bridge often contains the most important words in the lyrics. Chorus A section of a song that is sung several times with the same words and melody. The chorus is the section you can usually easily sing along to. Also known as refrain.
