Seven Nation Army was written by Jack White, the singer and guitarist of the American band The White Stripes. The band had just two members: Jack White and drummer Meg White. They called themselves The White Stripes because Meg liked eating mints with white stripes during gigs. Throughout Seven Nation Army you can hear a riff that sounds like it is played on a bass guitar. In fact Jack plays this riff on a guitar with a distorted sound.

Whole Lotta Love – Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin is one of the most well-known rock bands ever. In 1969 Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin’s guitarist, composed a riff that has become very famous. This riff forms the basis of the song Whole Lotta Love.

know Notes have a name: the note name. The note names are: a – b – c – d – e – f – g. Notes are written on a staff. A staff consists of five horizontal lines, and notes are written on and between these lines. Notes for the guitar are written as ‘tabs’. The six lines of the tab are the strings of the guitar, and the numbers are the fret spaces on the guitar neck.
First sing the riff several times so that you know it well. Say the note names while singing. Find the tones you need to play on an instrument. Play them slowly in the correct order one after the other. Note: you have to play the first tone twice. Do this until you don’t need to look for them any more. Now play it in the correct rhythm. Singing along helps! You are ready when you can repeat the riff a few times without stopping or making mistakes.

Sing: you sing Seven Nation Army in small groups, taking turns. Play: you play the riff of Seven Nation Army, now with the ending!
Sing Rehearse 1 Practice the first four lines a couple of times. Take particular care with ‘rip’ in line 3: this is higher. Also line 4 starts differently than the other lines. 2 Now practice the second part of the verse. Sing the last line louder than the others. 3 Practice verses 2 and 3 in the same way. Take particular note of when each line starts. 4 Can you sing along well with the song? Read the lyrics again carefully. How does the singer feel? How should the song be sung? 5 Divide the two parts of each verse between different groups. Practice this division. Tips for singing The second part of each verse is higher. You can choose to sing the song high as well as low. Try both out and choose what feels best. Sing Seven Nation Army a bit rough: it is not a love song! EXTRA Combine the singing with the drum rhythm (from Listen). While singing (or when another group is singing): stamp with your foot on each beat. During the second part of each verse: clap on the second and fourth beat as well.

Tips for playing To practice the transition from the riff to the ending, keep playing riff – ending – riff – ending etc. Keep listening to the others; then you can always jump back in if you go wrong somewhere. EXTRA The riff changes sometimes during the interlude: this is a variation. In the variation the riff is b. What is played at the dotted line? Try to different at the end: e – e – g – e – d – c play the variation by listening carefully and copying it. In the interlude the order is: riff – variation – riff – variation – ending. Play the drums for Seven Nation Army. Listen carefully to the song so that you know exactly what to play at each part (intro, verse, interlude). For this draw up a table like that in step 5 before.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight was written for the Disney film The Lion King. Elton John composed the music and Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. The film became such a huge success that it was soon turned into a musical. The musical was also very successful; it is still performed in many countries. Worldwide more than 90 million people have been to see it! In Can You Feel the Love Tonight Nala and Simba (the future ‘Lion King’) realize that they have fallen in love with each other. Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog are afraid that they will lose their great friend Simba to Nala.

Practice A Practice the roles Different people sing in Can You Feel the Love Tonight, each with their own role. Put yourself in the part! Work in two groups: one group plays Timon, the other Pumbaa. Say verse 1 out loud in the way that matches your role: Timon is sad and a bit desperate; Pumbaa is acting the fool. Now sing the verse, first just the melody, then in your role. Take note of the words that are spoken.

B Practice the chorus Practice the chorus. Sing long lines; you sing a whole line without taking a breath in the middle. Now sing chorus 1. What is the atmosphere of that chorus? Which dynamics (loud/quiet) suit it? Sing chorus 2. This is a bit louder than chorus 1. Sing chorus 3: one tone higher and the loudest dynamics: the climax of the song! Can you still sing the lines on one breath? TIP Stand up for chorus 3. This makes it easier to sing loud. know Dynamics are the loudness of music.
C Practice the rhythm You can play a rhythm in the choruses. This can be done with African percussion instruments (bongos, congas, djembes) as well as with body percussion. know Percussion instruments are musical instruments that you play by hitting, rattling or shaking them. With body percussion you use your body as a percussion instrument, for example clapping, stamping your feet or slapping your thighs.

Think about the dynamics. 3 Practice your part. 4 Sing the song with the whole class, with everyone in their own role. Chorus 3 is sung by everyone to make it extra powerful. Tips for singing Stand up when you sing. Choose a pose that suits your role, but always stand firmly on both feet! Determine in advance when you need to take a breath: put a V in the song lyrics at these places to remind you. Sing with conviction. EXTRA Memorize your lyrics. Make a setup in the classroom, including a setup for the choir (for example, boys at the back, girls at the front). Do the song with solos for the roles of Pumbaa, Timon, Nala and Simba. Do the song in school as a ‘flashmob’. Timon starts, then more and more people join in.
