Dietrich Honors Institute Chair
Thiel College Dietrich Honors Institute Director and Associate Professor of English
Sheila Gross, Ph.D. ’10 teaches courses in literature, digital rhetoric, professional writing, and honors curricula.
Gross serves the institution through leadership roles on academic committees, faculty advising, and program development, supporting Thiel College’s commitment to student success and scholarly engagement.
An active contributor to the academic community, Gross has served as an associate editor, conference presenter, and workshop facilitator while participating in initiatives that explore innovative teaching practices and the role of artificial intelligence in the humanities classroom.
Gross was an English and history double major at Thiel and graduated in 2010. She earned her Master of Arts in English at Gannon University in 2012 and her Doctor of Philosophy in literature and criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was appointed Director of the Dietrich Honors Institute in January 2025. She joined Thiel College in 2020.
Jennifer Broderick, Ph.D.
Dr. Paul M. Rike H’70 Chair of Life Sciences
Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Broderick, Ph.D. joined Thiel College in 2019. She teaches foundational biology, anatomy, and physiology courses while mentoring undergraduate researchers and advising students pursuing health-related careers. As co-director of the Health Professions Institute, she helps guide pre-health students through academic planning, graduate school preparation, and experiential learning opportunities. Her work emphasizes personalized mentorship and hands-on learning, helping students build strong scientific foundations while preparing for professional pathways in medicine and the health sciences.
Broderick earned her Ph.D. in biological sciences from Duquesne University and her Bachelor of Science from Robert Morris University.
Beyond the classroom, Broderick is an active science communicator and mentor dedicated to expanding access to STEM education. She has participated in outreach initiatives with community organizations, regional science programs, and professional conferences, helping audiences of all ages better understand the role of biology in everyday life. At Thiel College, she contributes to curriculum development, academic advising, and institutional service.
Endowed Chairs
Michael T. Balas, Ph.D.
Dr. Carl Hoffman ’69 H’10 Chair of Biology
Michael Balas, Ph.D. is Professor of Biology and Chair of the Department of Biology at Thiel College, where he has served on the faculty since 2000. A scholar of behavioral ecology and animal behavior, his teaching spans conservation biology, entomology, genetics, ecology, and research methods. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Balas has held several leadership roles at the College, including Chairperson of the Faculty, and has contributed to institutional governance and academic planning.
Balas’ research explores social evolution, biogeography, and conservation biology, with particular interests in ant communities and freshwater invertebrate ecology. His scholarly work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, Animal Behaviour, and Evolutionary Ecology, and he has contributed to interdisciplinary scholarship connecting science and society. Beyond his publications, he has served the broader scientific community as an AP Biology reader and as a contributor to national assessment initiatives.
He earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Rochester and a B.A. in biology from Swarthmore College.

Jordan Wilhoit ’26
Jordan Wilhoit ’26, of McDonald, Pa., is a biochemistry and chemistry double major with a neuroscience minor. After graduation, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry.
Wilhoit is actively involved in philanthropy through Thiel College’s chapter of Kappa Sigma, including annual fundraising initiatives for local veterans. He also worked at the Accessibility Resource Center.
Wilhoit is a 2022 graduate of Fort Cherry High School and was a full-tuition scholarship winner in 2022. He interned at Greenville Metals and served as secretary for the Student Government Association. He is also a member of the Dietrich Honors Institute and the American Chemical Society.

Founded in 1922, Alpha Chi is one of only four national scholarship societies admitting to membership superior junior and senior students, irrespective of their fields of study. The objectives of Alpha Chi are the promotion and recognition of scholarship.
On the 300 campuses with chapters, Alpha Chi membership is the highest academic honor that may be awarded.

DEAN’S LIST
To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must attain a minimum grade point average of 3.4 for the term, based upon grades earned in a minimum of 12 conventionally graded credit hours.

The Dietrich Honors Institute (DHI) exists to provide a superior foundation upon which a high-quality liberal arts education may be built. It does this partly through a specific set of core courses that are designated and designed especially for DHI students.
