The Class of 1974 raised $200,000 to establish a scholarship for education majors.
Remembering how their Thiel education served as a springboard for their careers and lives, the classmates wanted to give back in a meaningful way. They proudly presented the largest gift ever made by any class. The Class of 1974’s gift will provide opportunities for students to “touch the future” for years to come. GRANT WILL SUPPORT NURSING PROGRAM
Thiel College has been awarded nearly $200,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission to expand its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, a strategic initiative designed to address the region’s nursing shortage and strengthen western Pennsylvania’s healthcare workforce.
The ARC award—secured with guidance and application support from the Northwest Commission will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the College as part of a three-year, $399,836 project to modernize nursing facilities in the Daniel and Dorothy Spence Academic Center.

The investment will fund advanced simulation technology and clinical training equipment, creating a modern learning environment for nursing students preparing to enter a high-demand profession. Planned upgrades include adult, pediatric and infant patient simulators; automated medicine dispensing systems; and fully equipped clinical practice labs
“This investment ensures Thiel College can continue training highly skilled nurses at a time when Pennsylvania faces one of the most pressing healthcare shortages in its history,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Sheila Nowinski, Ph.D. “With updated simulation labs and enhanced clinical experiences, our graduates will be ready to deliver exceptional patient care across the region.”

The project builds on Thiel’s 2024 approval from the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing to operate an independent BSN program and subsequent accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. It also reflects Thiel’s commitment to workforce readiness, regional health initiatives and strategic partnerships.
During the grant period, more than 100 students are expected to train in the new facilities, with projected first-time NCLEX pass rates above 90 percent and near-perfect job placement within six months of licensure.

As Thiel matches federal funding to bring this project to completion, continued donor support will help sustain the momentum—ensuring that future nurses have access to the technology, training and mentorship essential to a stronger regional healthcare system.
THIEL FUND SUPPORTS TOMCAT VOLLEYBALL’S PLAYOFF ROAD TRIP
The Thiel College Tomcats men’s volleyball capped a stellar season by winning the inaugural Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s volleyball championship. The win led to the Tomcats earning the program’s first spot in the national playoffs. The NCAA Division III championship play-in
game was held at Washington and Lee University’s Holekamp Gymnasium in Lexington, Va., on April 17, 2025. The hard-earned road trip of 350 miles each way for team members, staff and coaches was supported by the Thiel Fund. The unplanned road trip is just one example of many why The Thiel Fund is essential.
The trip to NCAA playoffs was a great experience for the team. We believe that this set the tone for not only our volleyball team but Thiel athletics and the College as a community and family.

SPONSOR NEW SCHOLARSHIP
Trustee Emeritus Dr. James McHugh ’62 H’02 and his wife, Betty Ann, of Latrobe, Pa., have established a new endowed scholarship to help open doors for future Thiel College students. Details are still being finalized, but the fund reflects his enduring commitment to student opportunity and academic excellence. This award is separate from the Fred Rogers Scholarship and other initiatives already connected to McHugh.
A Thiel graduate and President and CEO of Reprax, Inc., McHugh was instrumental in bringing Fred Rogers H’69 to campus to receive an honorary degree. Rogers’ speech at Thiel, “Encouraging Creativity,” urging educators to nurture rather than restrict young minds was among the most popular Mr. Rogers ever delivered and can be read on Thiel College’s website www.thiel. edu/rogersspeech
The newest scholarship from the McHugh’s continues their long-standing committment to Thiel, which includes the College’s connection to Mr. Rogers.
The James C. and Betty Ann McHugh Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to a fulltime student majoring or minoring in business or accounting, with a minimum 2.8 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a first-generation college student.
