The grammar of light The ERCO formula for quality lighting design ERCO lighting tools provide the design freedom required for complex building projects. Our product development is based on a perception-orientated approach to lighting design. US lighting designer Richard Kelly (1910–1977) divided light for quality lighting design into three categories: ambient luminescence, focal glow and play of brilliants. Using this “grammar of light”, architecture can be illuminated in a userfocused way, from open-plan offices and boutiques to libraries. Experience shows that lighting concepts are perceived as particularly successful when all three components, ambient lighting, directed accent light and decorative light, are combined in a balanced ratio. The systematic structure of the ERCO product range, with different light distributions, warm white and neutral white light, various sizes and lumen packages, is ideally suited to implementing differentiated, user-focused lighting concepts.
Ambient luminescence refers to simple ambient lighting. This type of lighting, for example via downlights or uniform vertical lighting, provides orientation and conveys a sense of safety.

The sum of ambient luminescence, focal glow and play of brilliants When all three components – ambient lighting, directed accent light and decorative light – are combined in a balanced ratio, lighting concepts are considered to be particularly successful.
Focal glow represents accent light that highlights objects, surfaces and spatial zones and creates hierarchies of perception. It is a key tool for directing the viewer’s attention when illuminating art and fashion, façades and monuments.
Play of brilliants is decorative light, light to marvel at and an aesthetic end in itself. It includes coloured light effects, decorative luminaires and light art objects.

Efficient visual comfort The five characteristics of high-quality lighting solutions ERCO understands light as the fourth dimension of architecture. Our vision is to make a positive contribution to society through our actions and to make architecture tangible through light. To this end, we develop and manufacture lighting solutions that create a high-quality, authentic environment. Efficient Visual Comfort (EVC) is our strategy for seamlessly linking sustainable planning approaches with innovative product technology. To put this into practice, we have defined five quality characteristics.

1. Quality lighting design Ambient lighting with effective glare control and accent lighting enable hierarchies of perception and support people in their tasks. Use light only where it is needed.
2. Vertical lighting Vertical surfaces account for a large part of our perception due to our natural direction of view. They influence the perception of brightness far more than light on horizontal surfaces. This is why wallwashing is an essential component at ERCO.
3. Effective lighting technology Precise optical systems direct light exactly onto the surfaces that need to be illuminated and that people require for perception. The projected light of LEDs in combination with high-quality lens systems is particularly efficient.
4. Intelligent controllability ERCO offers luminaires for wireless and wired control technologies such as Casambi Bluetooth, DALI and phase dimming. Sensors and time-controlled lighting scenes help minimise energy consumption and adapt light to daylight patterns. Control light according to your personal preferences.
5. Efficient LED technology High visual comfort is based on in-house optoelectronics expertise, from LED PCBs and electronics to thermal management. The specification of high-power LEDs to criteria such as colour rendering and colour consistency, luminous flux and thermal stability ensures maximum quality standards in terms of efficiency and light quality.

Focus on people Light for spaces, activity and mood Human Centric Lighting (HCL) describes a planning approach that places people and their needs at the centre of lighting design. It takes into account the visual, emotional and biological effects of light including non-visual effects alongside classic visual aspects such as supporting visual tasks and orientation.
People Our light creates spaces for people: it guides and provides orientation, supports interaction and communication, and enables new ways of working together.
Architecture Light is a dimension of architectural design: it traces forms and contours and supports spatial perception.

Activity and light Brightness should ideally be adapted to different visual tasks. By varying brightness and colour temperature, you can support circadian rhythm, for example with brighter, cooler colour temperatures during the day and dimmed, warmer light colours in the evening.
Always matching the atmosphere With tunable white and RGBW luminaires, light colour and mood can be controlled precisely, from dynamic daylight white to atmospheric accent colours. Light not only supports visual tasks, it also creates emotion and changes the character of a space.
Think holistically High-quality lighting solutions combine horizontal general lighting and wallwashing in a perception-orientated concept. Wallwashing creates a spacious impression and forms a counterpart to the façade with incoming daylight. Zoned lighting at desks provides high visual comfort and contributes to an attractive workplace.

Long-life luminaires for sustainable lighting solutions To protect our environment, we need to use resources responsibly and avoid waste. We do this by developing durable luminaires that meet our customers’ needs over the long term. “Lighting Durability” expresses our development goal: all newly developed ERCO products are designed for a service life of at least 20 years2.
20 years 20 years of service life1 Developed, tested and built for long-term operation of 75,000 hours2: Durability has always been a defining feature of our luminaires. To ensure this remains the case, our ECO Design Standard specifies a service life of at least 20 years3 for all new developments.
1 As part of the development process, ERCO analyses product use over 20 years in an average application environment appropriate to the respective luminaire category. The conditions for this are created through suitable material selection, insights from previous product generations, laboratory tests, endurance testing and certifications. 2 The targeted service life of 20 years (approx. 75,000 operating hours) assumes product-appropriate standard use, compliance with state-of-the-art maintenance intervals and – per year of use – an operating time of approx. 10 hours per day over 365 days.

This is where components receive their final protection and their defined surface finish. Visible aluminium parts such as housings or heat sinks are powder-coated for this purpose – automated, solvent-free and highly durable. Colour and gloss level are defined in this process and adapted to meet architectural requirements.
Aluminium profiles are mechanically machined, fitted with conductors and assembled ready for installation. Precise cuts, drill holes, and electrical contacts are produced in automated processes. The result is precisely manufactured tracks for flexible lighting installations.

In the black laboratory, we carry out precise photometric measurements on luminaires. Using highly accurate measuring instruments, we record all relevant photometric parameters.
In our in-house toolmaking department, injection moulds for aluminium and plastic parts are produced. This enables short development times, precise components and rapid adjustments in production.
In plastics production, lenses and housing components for ERCO lighting tools are manufactured by injection moulding. Any sprue material is not discarded, but kept entirely within our own loop. It is recycled locally and reused for new components, such as the Panlens lens made from 100% recycled plastic.
In metal processing, mechanical components for ERCO lighting tools are produced, precisely manufactured from aluminium profiles and castings. Sawing, milling, drilling and deburring are highly automated and closely coordinated with assembly. This precision is the basis for accuracy of fit, function and durability across all products.

In the electronics department, LED modules and control gear units are manufactured. Through in-house development and production, ERCO ensures that all components work together optimally – for high efficiency and maximum service life.
Components become a lighting tool. In assembly, all components are joined together to form the finished product. Quality and durability are the focus – each luminaire is tested individually.
From our factory in Lüdenscheid, ERCO lighting tools are shipped to more than 60 countries. Packed in recyclable materials, our products are reliably delivered to where they are needed thanks to resource-saving logistics.
In the high-bay warehouse, semi-finished and finished goods, as well as packaging materials, are stored in a space-saving way and moved fully automatically. Pallet stacker machines lift pallets to heights of up to 20 metres. This ensures efficient material supply for production and fast dispatch logistics.
