Activity Description and Educational Rationale

Drama students are invited to go on a field trip with their classmates and fellow drama students to Berkeley Street Theatre to see the critically acclaimed play, 1939, by Jani Lauzon and Kaitlyn Riordin. The show takes place on Tuesday, October 1st at 7:30 PM. 1939 is a Canstage and Belfry Theatre production in association with The Stratford Festival. The show follows a group of Indigenous students who have been tasked with putting on a play at a fictional Residential School in Northern Ontario. 1939 was born of both family legacy and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and has been guided by Indigenous Elders, Survivors, and ceremony throughout its development. From now until the end of the school year, students will be given 4 opportunities to see a show at a local Toronto theatre with their classmates. Students should aim to attend at least 2 of these shows. This will support their play review unit which culminates in students writing a response to a piece of theatre which they have seen recently.
