INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS IN EDUCATION PROCESS

Dr. Madhuri Isave Associate Professor, Tilak College of Education Pune, India ABSTRACT Indian education system has its own characteristic features. Family bonding is an identification of Indian people. Education, students and parents are having close association. Without parental guidance education process would be incomplete especially at pre-primary& primary level or it may be higher level. The present research paper was focus on an analysis of five key points which was related to nature of parents involved in education, Parents involvement in education at student point of view, Parents involvement needed in education process, Government initiatives for parents, Benefits of parents involvement for the students internal development as an individual and internal enlightenment, Strategy for how parents get involved in the education. Data was collected from parents and students with the help of questionnaire by survey method. Students from school education and higher education were selected. Research finding indicates that if we make cordial relationships between education processes and parents' aspirations it would be successful and meaningful to achieve learning objective and fruitful educational outcomes. Parents' involvement in education is very essential and it is helpful for students' internal development and enlightenment. Education process would be more meaningful if parents get involved in the education process KEY WORDS: Parents involvement, Education, Students. BACKGROUND: Indian education system has its own characteristics and it's different from other developed countries. Informal agencies like family are playing a very important role in the education of individuals. Family provides support to school education and higher education. Parents are directly and indirectly involved in their child's education and connected with the education process. In school specific curriculum, timetable and teaching learning patterns are all well set. In families all types of education are given to children but it is an informal and incidental way of learning. Family is an effective medium for cultural transformation from generation to generation. India is a treasure house of mythological stories for example in mythological stories the Mahabharata, Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita etc. play a very important role to create awareness of religious importance. Indian families are culture oriented and fond of festive celebration as per their religion. Behind Indian mythological stories contain values like courage, adventure, sacrifice, passion and ethics. Parents can play a very important role to inculcate values through telling stories of mythology.. Mother and father both are given great contribution in their child's progress hence in family “Matru devo Bhava” (Prostration to the mother) and “Pitru devo Bhava” (Prostration to the father) and they are doing their work with “Nishkam Karm” (with selfless attitude). REVIEW OF RELATED STUDY: Hoover, Dempsey & Sadler (1995).provided theoretical framework for researching parental involvement and directed toward parental involvement focussed on three points, (1) Why parents become involved in their children education? (2) How parents choose specific type of involvement (3) Why parental involvement has a positive influence on students educational outcomes Joyce. L. Epstein (1997) in his book title, “school, Family and Community partnership “author spines that” school family and community form the sphere of influence of a child and when these three environment work collaboratively educational development is enhanced”. Georgiou and Tourva (2007) studied the parent's perception and children academic achievement and their actual involvement .The finding of the study was the parental involvement was conductive to a child's success in school. Griffith (1996) studied the relationship between parent's empowerment and student academic performance and the study found that parental empowerment tended to have higher student CRT. In the present paper the researcher reviewed a few studies and expressed own views as experienced in child's education. METHODOLOGY: The researcher has conducted a short survey on parents and students of the new generation to collect their opinions about parent's involvement in education.57 qualitative responses were collected by filling Google form. The data analysed as per participants respond. A varied sample was taken for the survey. Some students selected from educated families and some from uneducated families. Qualitative responses noted directly and remaining highlighted in graphical manner. This paper focuses on following key statements.

DATA EXPRESSION: Parent's involvement in the education process is helpful for meaningful learning and enhances academic achievements of students and it has been proven by many research studies. In the present situation we are thinking that the new generation is going away from their parents and they don't like interference of parents in their life. But the survey has been taken and it is observed that students need parents guidance and their help in education. In uneducated families and low income families parents are taking efforts for the education of their child .They are doing extra work for them. Here the researcher highlighted student's opinions about their parent's involvement in education. The question was how your parents are getting involved in education? MOTIVATION IN MY EDUCATION: Mother, Anna (father) My mother and Anna (father) bought vegetables as they did not learn much. They felt that their children should learn and work, that they should not have a hard life like ours. For that, he inspired us for education from childhood, he never got angry with us or killed us for any reason. I didn't know that my mother used to teach me till 7th. My mother used to make me read and listen carefully while cooking, telling me mistakes in reading. She loved to read but could not learn as there was no school beyond 7th in her village, she was a smart student in school. In addition to my studies from my mother, I read and learn stories of famous writers like Pu. L. Deshpande, Vishwas Patel, Mrityunjaya, Dasbodh, Gita, other stories and novels. She knew that reading books on the radio at home at 6.30 in the morning made her a habit of reading not only school books but also other books. She always said that good listening and reading are essential for becoming a good person. If I had not got such a mother, I would have read only school books like others. Dad used to read the paper in the morning, he used to read the paper to me, and he used to tell me that you need to be aware of the events in your area. At that time, I read stories of Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak, Agarkar, Mahatma Phule and Babasaheb Ambedkar, Shahu Maharaj and read many books. There was a book exhibition near the Atre Hall, and my father would take us there. He also allowed them to buy science experiment books because they loved science. We used to come home and read books and try small experiments with our siblings. I really wonder if we wouldn't have learned so much if it weren't for the two of them in my life. My mother and grandparents are very involved in my education and culture. Respect for teachers is only because of them, I definitely feel it today. All the teachers are as much involved in my academic success as my parents. My luck is that I have got all the

good teachers who have brought me into this beautiful personality. My father used to tell me that teachers should teach, but I should not give up learning.

Nature of the parent's involvement in academic and cognitive development: Communication and feedback: established rapport between school and home parents are taking regular feedback about the progress of a child. Regular communication with their teachers and administrator. Parents are alert and encouraging for study and good careers. Encouragement and motivational support: Parents encourage their child to participate in co-curricular activities organised by school timely and also give motivation to boost their performance in activities. Also give support to enter in competitive exams.

the wards about selection of topics for projects, and can guide to solve problems in surroundings. Parents can guide to School children as per their expertise. Can act as Mentor. Parents should counsel their wards regarding various options about education. They should give good suggestions to schools regarding students' education. The first teacher in a child's life is their parents. Hence they lay the foundation stone in the growth and knowledge of their child. They can help to grow their students by telling the strength and weakness of their child to teachers. Parents know the ability, difficulties and capacity of a child. If parents are educated then they should play a role of support system, helping their child. If parents are uneducated then they have minimal involvement but can effectively ask the child to sit and study and monitor. Parents' involvement can help the child to be organised and do their work properly. Parents can experience every change in their children so their role is very important. Home is a school of informal education. Involvement of parents in education is most important because it increases positive impact toward education. Parents should highly get involved in education. As it has a high influence on the environment around the child. Support for the system and concern. The parents should actively participate in educating the child as the values which play an important role in education are given mainly by parents. If they are involved and interested in knowing how and what the child learns in school it is beneficial to shape the future of the child. They are the main stakeholders in the process of educating the child and it helps in building support. The graphs indicate that mothers and fathers are equally contributed in education. Sometimes mothers take more initiatives. Both are playing an important role in education.

Supporting role for school: Teacher assign homework and parents understand their duty to check homework done or not and ask about study and other activities going in school. By taking regular studies, making education walk through every sphere of life through daily activities. Create a learning environment at home: In educated family parents act like teachers and teach all subjects, taking revision so children don't have extra tuition. They used to teach the content, moral values, and help in projects making, extra studies, assignments completion etc.

II. Importance of parent's involvement in education at student point of view: Parent's involvement is exactly like a gardener's involvement in a garden. Same way Parent's involvement channels the child's energy and guides them towards the right goal. Parents are the first teachers and greatest influencers in student's life Development of social skill: Improving students behaviour in the classroom and social skills are been developed Holistic development of students: as given importance in NEP2020 that holistic development of individuals is focused in the education process. Parents has play key role in the holistic development of students Positive growth of the student: A meaningful and proper directed learning possible because of parental guidance. Play roles like co-teacher: Parents, Students and Teachers make the triangle of education complete. Now during the pandemic we have seen parents as co teachers. Parents are learning along with students and new trends in education. It create strong bond between child and parents

Government initiatives for parents: The following graphs indicate that parents are not aware about government schemes available for parents. Those who are aware know very few schemes like “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” and “Pradhanmantri Yojna.Jan Dhan Yojna” but not in detail. They want information from school.

Increase students' performance: Parent involvement makes the student more participative, they feel cared even at home, the progress is tracked, and good communication between parents and teachers also has a positive effect on the students' performance. Parent's knowledge and Skill used to student's growth: Parents involvement in education make a friendlier home environment. Parents know their kids and their intellectual level thoroughly. They can encourage and direct them correctly. Alertness of parents helps to give proper direction: They have to be involved in the education process, as they will come to know what is present scenario of education Parent's is curious and supportive in the education process Parents know the practical problem of their ward, they can give suggestions which can be helpful to the school management. Parents do involve in education so student will try to take big steps with their support

III. Parents involvement is more needed in education: Although parents are less techno savvy than their children. They can guide

If my parents are involved in the education process the benefits of my internal development is very simple for me they will always tell me what is best for me in my career.

Government schemes for school education: Through the various schemes the government is trying to encourage children to get education and provide facilities for their education. To achieve the goal of 'Education for all' the universalisation of elementary education, the government has taken initiatives to start programmes and projects to bring equity and quality in education. Various commissions committees have made provisions for education in the view of National Education Policy. In NEP2020.School Management committee had given a contribution. The name of the few schemes are Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), National Programme for Education of Girls at elementary education, Mid-Day Meal, Right to Education Act 2009,Schemes for infrastructural development of schools. Maharashtra state of India government has started “Manini Kenya Bhagyashree” Scheme from August 2017.Under this scheme government shall provide financial assistance to parents for One Girl Child Rs50, 000 for a period of 18 years and Two girl Children Rs.25000.It is applicable for only to the families having monthly income up to 7.5 lakhs and only after the submission of family planning certificate. Very few parents are aware of this scheme. V. Students enlightenment and internal development: The researcher has conducted online interviews of thirty five students of graduates. Qualitative data were collected. After manual coding of data a responses was classified in two main categories and subcategories of responses. Parents being the first teacher for us to build the process of learning and development. At every stage of life and education, parents' involvement makes it easier to make decisions with the help of their huge experience. Parents involvement and guidance eventually helps and enlightens one's life. VI. Strategies for school how parents get involved in education: We observed in the Parent teacher association meeting teachers not entertain parents if they ask for extra information regarding education. Teachers don't want interference from parents in school. If parents give some suggestions or any valuable contribution they are welcomed. Schools like parent's involvement but in a limited manner. For assignment completion, project work, cultural programme and other activities parents provide help to teachers and this type of supportive involvement of parents is accepted by school. Schools only want such a type of involvement of parents in education.

Growth template where student progress is properly noted with all behavioral aspects of students. It is different from a report card. Parents will know the single details of their ward.

Schools are not interested in taking so much effort for parents' involvement. Maybe some schools are exceptional. In this paper the researcher suggested a strategy that how parents get more involved in the education process. The following strategy should be adopted in the education process so that meaningful involvement of parents in education will enhance and parents get motivated and give great contribution. It also helps to establish cordial relationships between school, family and community.

8) Positive behavior support mechanism should be in school and it would be functional with the help of parents. 9) Value added course- invite parents for guidance through these courses. Parents would give a great contribution in the value inculcation process.

The researcher has suggested following strategies for schools: 1) School Management Committee and Parent Teacher Association should be strengthened with its function and practices. School management committee is involved in the policy making process in which the committee suggests or recommends some useful programme for school education or parental involvement and it is a great contribution but needs to focus on implementation process and practices. Follow up mechanism should be set. While school supervision visits parents should be invited and arrange interactive sessions of SMC with parents.

10) School as a community development center with the help of parents' support. Make sure parents not only involve only child education fulfilment purpose but they actively participate in school governance .Celebration of unity in diversity week with the help of parents in school In this way if we make cordial relationships between education processes and parents' aspirations it would be successful and meaningful involvement of parents in the education process. Parents' involvement in education is very essential and it is helpful for students' internal development as an individual and individual enlightenment .Education process would be more meaningful if parents get involved in the education process. It would be helpful to increase GER which is expected in NEP 2020.India is a developing country and most of the parents are living under the poverty line, marginalized, deprived and illiterate etc. If school has taken care of such parents and motivated them to be involved in education it would be helpful for improving educational outcomes. It will also help to fulfil the aspiration of NEP and RTE act.

2) Policy attention should be shifted toward parental involvement in education. According to Annual Status of Education (ASER) 2020 in spite of providing mid-day meals, no fees, scholarship and also some families receive subsidies for their child education the evidence suggests that low attendance and poor performance at primary school. It means an urgent need to create awareness among parents about their children's education. Policy makers of NEP 2020 not much focussed on parental involvement. For this school need to take initiatives to organise

REFERENCES: a) Specific awareness training programme for parents. b) Make provision of special award for parents for 100% attendance of their children c) Arrange interactive session with home-schooling parents and other parents, Generally we have seen parents go to school on open day, admission day, PTA meeting and gathering function. Teachers have no time to discuss extra information about education like government schemes, new trends in education, new pattern of education, structure of NEP2020 etc. and even parents not showing their interest to know. If a school organizes a special program for parents to give additional information about education it will make meaningful involvement of parents in education. 3) Allotment of specific slot in timetable for experiential learning- Parents have great potential and knowledge about not only their children but overall surrounding where they live. Those have rural background and living in remote area they have skill of management and entrepreneurship and skill of specific occupation which they belongs and depend on it. If schools invite such parents and ask them to share their experience and knowledge about occupation with students it will make effective experiential learning and helpful to gain knowledge of skill development.

4) Provide a common sharing and learning platform- Schools can frequently organize sessions for parents to make them aware about the facts and procedure of education. Parents can also contribute to share their views and provide financial support too. 5) Make admin in online teaching learning process- In pandemic situation we are experiencing online teaching .The teacher face difficulties and challenges in online teaching like, inattentive students, misbehave students, irregularity in class, creating disturbance in class so that online teaching not so feasible as proved by teachers opinion and researchers experience. If schools assign admin duty to parents it will be helpful and effective in online teaching. Admin parents take responsibility for class control, mark attendance of students and report to school. In online teaching teachers share material, videos, pdf files on whats-app or in google classroom and this sharing process goes on parents mobile. Parents play a very devoting role to disseminate information and keep update, alerting themselves. For a successful online teaching learning process parents' role is highly remarkable. 6) Make admin in online teaching learning process - In international schoolswhile given admission parents get interviewed but it does not happen in all schools .If schools inform parents to prepare SWOC analysis (Strength, Weakness Opportunity and Challenges) of their child before get admission. So that teacher could know the students' needs and interests and they would adopt proper teaching methods as per learning style.
