Editor’s Note – March Autumn has officially arrived. Already the leaves are turning, and the evenings are drawing in, gently reminding us that seasons change –and so do the rhythms of community life. This month, I’d like to focus on our volunteer team, beginning with a sincere thank you to those who expressed interest in the Ravenswood Distributor role. We are delighted to welcome Brent Snellex to the Woodpecker family. Brent steps into the role previously held by Jonathan Chua, who is reluctantly stepping down from both his board and distributor responsibilities due to increased work commitments. Brent will also join us on our board.
Jonathan has been truly instrumental in establishing the then-new Ravenswood distribution area, particularly through his leadership in developing delivery maps and supporting our deliverer network. His contribution, commitment, and quiet reliability have been greatly valued. On behalf of the Trust and our readers, thank you Jonathan – your efforts have made a lasting difference. At the time of writing, we are conducting informal interviews with two more community members who are considering back-up distributor roles for Ravenswood and Woodend. Having back-up support is incredibly important in volunteer-run organisations, ensuring continuity when life inevitably becomes busy.
We are now actively seeking a Pegasus Distributor – full details can be found on Page 21. While we anticipate confirming one back-up for Pegasus, we would warmly welcome another volunteer for this, our largest distribution area. If you enjoy being connected, organised, and part of something meaningful, we would love to hear from you. Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet people, stay engaged, and contribute to the strength of our local community. We are also pleased to share that the Trust has approved another funding application supporting a local initiative – the PRGI Family Fun Day. It was our pleasure to contribute toward this event, which proved to be a fantastic success, bringing families together for a day of connection, laughter, and community spirit. If your group or organisation is considering applying for funding, you can read more about the criteria and process on Page 29. As always, thank you to our volunteers, advertisers, contributors, and readers. The Woodpecker thrives because of you.

WOODEND
FRIENDSHIP CLUB
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that the new year is treating you well. It’s incredible to think we’re already into February! Our year kicked off with a lovely potluck lunch at Maxene and Jack’s on 21 January. The turnout was fantastic, and the food was absolutely delicious. Although the weather was chilly, Maxene and Jack thoughtfully set up tables in their garage, keeping us warm and cozy throughout.
On Wednesday 4 February, many of us gathered at Smith’s Museum in Rangiora. After a brief introduction, we explored three expansive buildings filled with motor vehicles and even helicopters. What an extraordinary gem right on our doorstep! It’s astonishing what gems lie just behind the fences.
Following the museum visit we gathered at The Brook for lunch.
The Woodend Friendship Club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the Woodend Community Centre at 2pm. If you are retired and looking for a way to connect with other people, please come along for a visit.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North
Canterbury is inviting local businesses to help grow youth mentoring across our region by displaying a bright and cheery leaflet in their workplace. It’s a small action with real impact. Every leaflet helps us reach potential volunteers and create mentoring relationships that provide young people with consistency, encouragement and extra support. Local mentors spend just one hour a week with a child, building trust and confidence through everyday activities. These relationships make a lasting difference - not just for young people, but for families and communities too. Businesses that get involved will receive a social media shout-out, recognising their support for local rangatahi. Call 03 310 7004 or email northcanterbury@bbbs.nz today.

Woodend School Vision and Mission

Building a collaborative learning community through positive relationships.
Supporting learners in setting goals, reflecting on progress, and seeking challenges.
Encouraging tuakana-teina relationships where we learn from and support each other.
Mihi Whakatau
In Week 1, we proudly held our first Mihi Whakatau, welcoming new kaiako, students, and whānau to our kura.
It was wonderful to celebrate the growth of our school roll and the supportive whānau who make our community so special.
We especially appreciated the whānau who responded with a kōrero, adding to a special welcoming ceremony.
Led by our principal, Mr Retallick, the event set a positive tone for the year ahead.

Rare Disease Day marks a global effort to raise awareness of rare health conditions and shines a spotlight on the many people and whānau who live with them.
We invite all students to dress up in bright colours, fun outfits, or anything that shows how special they are, just like the unique individuals in our school and community. This is a meaningful way to show support for our classmates, whānau and friends living with rare disorders and to help bring rare disorders “out of the darkness and into the light”. We will not be collecting donations for this at our kura, but if you would like to donate to this wonderful cause, here is a link: https://donation.rarediseaseday. org/

Andrew & the Woodend School Team
1st March marks the first official day of Autumn Autumn arrives gently across Pegasus, Woodend and our surrounding communities, painting streets and parks in warm shades of gold, amber and russet. The air feels crisper, mornings slower, and sunsets softer. It’s a season of transition — a time to harvest, prepare, and reflect. Gardens offer their final bursts of colour, while leaves gather like confetti along footpaths. We swap jandals for boots, salads for soups, and long evenings outdoors for cosy moments inside. Autumn invites us to pause, breathe deeply, and appreciate change. As the year settles, it reminds us that slowing down can be just as meaningful as growth.

A Rose for Every Birthday
Roses have long been rich in symbolism — love, resilience, memory and renewal — so it’s no surprise many gardeners feel drawn to particular varieties. What’s less well known is that every month of the year has a rose that reflects its seasonal mood. January opens in full summer. Rosa virginiana, with its light green foliage, single dark pink flowers and later red hips, suits this time of structure and endurance. February’s lingering warmth and romance are echoed in the rambler ‘Wedding Day’, prized for its frothy white blooms and sense of anticipation, even though planting waits until winter.
As autumn begins in March, the native Dog Rose (Rosa canina) embodies transition, supporting bees, birds and butterflies with its pale pink flowers and vivid hips. April’s cooler days invite fragrance, making ‘Silas Marner’, with its soft pink, richly scented blooms, an ideal match.
Late autumn in May is a time for preparation, reflected in the dependable ‘The Mayflower’, a hardy English shrub rose that rewards winter planting with generous summer flowering. June’s winter stillness suits Rosa glauca, valued as much for its blue-green foliage and hips as its delicate summer flowers. Mid-winter optimism arrives with July’s ‘Korresia’, a bright yellow, spicyscented floribunda that stores energy now for a spectacular summer show. August’s lengthening days are mirrored in ‘Alpine Sunset’, whose apricot-pink blooms shine once planted bare root before spring.
Early spring abundance belongs to Rosa rugosa rubra in September, offering fragrant red flowers and large hips ideal for wildlife gardens. October’s climbing growth is perfectly matched by ‘Summer Wine’, a vigorous climber with warm orange-pink blooms.
November’s changing light and colour suit the striking striped blooms of Rosa Mundi, while December calls for celebration. ‘Festive Jewel’, with its deep salmon-pink, high-centred flowers and strong scent, brings early summer drama to the garden. Whether chosen for symbolism or simple beauty, there’s truly a rose for every birthday — and every season — in the garden.
The Woodpecker Community Trust recently approved another funding application, for PRGI towards their Pegasus Family Fun Day held on 22 February.

CAB Awareness Week
Each year, CABs throughout Aotearoa New Zealand celebrate Awareness Week. We will mark it in 2026 from Monday 9 March to Sunday 15 March.
Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping people know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the confidence and support they need to take action. We invite you to get in touch with us if you need help with any matter, no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.
This year’s Awareness Week will take place from 9 – 14 March and the theme is ‘Tūturu te tangata, tūturu te tautoko – real people, real help’. We will be putting the spotlight on our service which is made up of real people helping people with their real everyday issues in communities across Aotearoa.
Giving and receiving is also the experience of our volunteers and staff in CABs around the motu. Volunteers share their skills and aroha, taking the time to listen and awhi our clients so they are empowered to know and act on their rights and to connect with groups and services in their communities. In turn, our volunteers gain so much – learning new information, developing research and problemsolving skills and contributing to making communities more caring and inclusive.
If you’ve ever considered making a difference in your community, now's your chance. How about applying to volunteer with us at Citizens Advice Bureau? We’ll be holding interviews at the end of this month, so please contact us for an application form and role description. Applications close on Wednesday, 11 March. Training will begin in May.
Our opening hours are 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Have I mentioned before – what a diverse group of people our members are?
From a University Student to Stay at Home Mums, Retired Folk, Critical Care Paramedic, St John Technical Wizard and Paramedic, Arborist, Horticulturist, Film Producer, Financial Wizard to name but a few - one person I haven’t mentioned before and who has now been in the Brigade for more than 20 years (a great achievement) is Mark Sutherland, a pilot with Air New Zealand. He has been with Air NZ for 35 years flying both domestic and short haul international flights. He purchased with his wife Chris a lifestyle block on what was then the outskirts of Woodend. He laughingly says he was set up by his brother-in-law Lloyd who was at that time a member of the brigade and brought along ‘kicking and screaming’ to the station. Because he was new to the community and a shift worker, he was welcomed with open arms.
he wanted to do something for the community and being able to help was important to him. In his time in the brigade, he has been in some very confronting situations but feels confident in being able to deal with traumatic calls as they arise. (Having known Mark for those 20+ years, I can confirm he is someone you can rely on and is calm under pressure.) He loves the camaraderie and has made lifelong friendships within the brigade. He hasn’t sought to gain higher qualifications within the brigade, as his job requires him to be away frequently and he has a huge responsibility in keeping his skills up to pilot a plane! However, he has taken on a role; having
All that said, he had the belief that
his Class 4 Drivers’ Licence and one of only a handful of members able to drive our tanker – of driver training and is responsible for driving standards within the brigade. He is always sought after as ‘Master of Ceremonies’ for our Annual Honours and Awards Night as well as Waikuku Volunteer Fire Brigades Honours Night
in recent years. With his interest in the history of our brigade and a master of oratory – in the past two years, he has spoken of some of that history at our Awards Night. He believes it is important as only a handful of members have been in the brigade for 20 years.
As with all our members, we value your time and experience within our brigade Mark.

The Shed is entering the new year with the completion of some major projects for both Woodend and Pegasus Schools. It is great to have the support of our local
schools, and we look forward to more collaboration in future.
2026 is also a year of planned expansion for our Shed. Space has been at a premium for some time now and along with dust nuisance and machinery noise we need to address these safety issues. We have a project design to increase the floor area by about 66%. This will allow us to create a quieter hand work area and also cope with larger numbers on site. We have raised 35% of the funds required and we have applied for funding for the balance. Now we just cross our fingers and wait. All being well we will build an additional unit in July this year.
Despite having had to restrict membership in 2025 , we are now happy to welcome a limited number of new members. We are a very relaxed and laid-back bunch of guys so if you are interested, please drop in and see us at Gladstone Park on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9.30am and 12.30pm, or call / txt Derrick on 022 436 5960 or Steve on 0210 237 7864.
PS: Our compressor was stolen from a locked cage outside our shed between Wednesday 11th pm and Friday am. We and the police would welcome and advice as to those responsible.
PEGASUS COMMUNITY NEWS
KEEPING POSTAL SERVICES LOCAL
For years, residents of Pegasus and Woodend have enjoyed easy access to postal services at the Pegasus General Store. This convenience for our 4,260 residents is now at risk. New Zealand Post plans to remove local postal services, requiring a 10km trip to Rangiora for basic tasks like sending parcels or collecting missed deliveries. While this may seem minor to some, it creates real challenges for older residents, those with mobility issues, and anyone without reliable transport. A simple errand becomes a costly, time-consuming journey. Postal access is more than a commercial service it is vital community infrastructure. Its removal places unnecessary strain on those least able to manage it. We urge New Zealand Post to reconsider. Accessible postal services support community wellbeing, independence, and connection. Pegasus Residents Group has launched a petition. If you value keeping essential services local, please sign: https://www.change.org/p/save-thepostal-service-in-pegasus-town BIG TURNOUT FOR PEGASUS FAMILY FUN DAY
Pegasus drew a strong crowd today as hundreds of residents came out to enjoy the annual Pegasus Family Fun Day, hosted by the Pegasus Residents Group. With warm, sunny weather, families made the most of a wide range of activities spread across the reserve. Children enjoyed bouncy castles, face painting, and visits from well-known characters including Spider-Man and Bluey. A display of Morris Minors

attracted plenty of interest, and the Kaiapoi RocknRoll Club kept things lively with their demonstrations. Kids ‘axe throwing’ and the gladiator arena were also popular options. Food and drink stalls were busy throughout the day, providing a good mix of options for all ages. Local musicians Josh and Gina performed across the afternoon, adding to the relaxed, community-focused atmosphere.
The event was supported by local sponsors Archgola, Paws Vets, Pegasus Bay Vets, Ray White, Pegasus Haven, Pegasus Nest, and Peg n Pint. A special thank-you goes to the volunteers whose time and effort made the day possible. This year’s Family Fun Day delivered a well-run community event with something for everyone.

Cuppa in the Community
A free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas. 10 am, second Tuesday of the month at St Barnabas Church Hall, Woodend.
February Meeting:
We had a great turnout for the first meeting of the year. We didn’t have an organised speaker;
however, Shona Powell gave us information on the progress of the long-term plan. Following on from that, we discussed ideas for future speakers and with input from those attending, we now have ideas for the rest of the year.
For your diary: Tuesday 10 March - Justin, the owner of Ravenswood New World will address the meeting. As New World have agreed to sponsor our morning tea, we thought it fitting that Justin come along to meet us and see how we are meeting the needs of the local community.
Thanks to our sponsors: Joe’s Garage, The Coffee Club, St. Barnabas Church and Ravenswood New World.
For your diary: Tuesday 3 June – Shona Powell will be our guest speaker. Shona attends most of our meetings and keeps us informed about local issues. She will talk about the role of the Woodend Sefton Community Board.
Thanks to our sponsors Joe's Garage, The Coffee Club and St Barnabas Church.
Mayoral Column
It was great to attend the recent Pegasus Family Fun Day and see the community out in force. There’s nothing quite like seeing families, friends and neighbours enjoying time together. There was something for everyone with the sausage sizzle, live music, rock ’n’ roll dancers, bouncy castle and face painting, and for those of you who know my fondness of cars, I certainly enjoyed seeing the lineup of classic cars. It was a fantastic afternoon and a real showcase of community spirit. My sincere thanks to Deb and the Pegasus Residents Group Incorporated for organising such a successful event. Days like this don’t happen without a huge amount of work behind the scenes. The planning, coordination and sheer effort that goes into delivering something of this scale is significant, and the result spoke for itself. You should be very proud of what you achieved.
It was also great to see several of my Council colleagues there supporting the community and joining in the fun. Pegasus continues to grow and evolve, and it is exciting to see the new Community Centre now well underway. That facility will be far more than just a building, it will be a space for connection, celebration and community life for many years to come.
While at the event, a number of residents asked me about progress on the Woodend Bypass. I know preliminary works are already underway by NZ Transport Agency and recent concerns suggesting the project may be delayed due to shifts
in priorities under the Government’s Infrastructure Plan do not align with the information I have received. All indications remain that construction is due to start very soon.
We are still awaiting the final decision from Cabinet regarding tolling. As you will be aware, Council has submitted against tolling. Our view is that tolling risks encouraging rat-running and increasing traffic volumes on district roads, which would create additional pressure.
I have also arranged a meeting with senior representatives of AA insurance to better understand what the issues are surrounding new home insurance policies in the Woodend area. I will update you all on the outcome of that meeting.
As always, I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss.

Pegasus parkrun
Pegasus parkrun will celebrate our 500th Event during August this year and we are hoping to put on a big Milestone Event, potentially bigger than our 400th back in October 2024 when we had a massive 716 participants and 34 volunteers - both record numbers. We completed Event 470 on 31 January so there’s time to build this massive milestone. Meantime, however, we continue with our weekly, Saturday morning 5km walk / jog / run. Currently we are averaging around 200+ participants each week. Most weeks there are 30 or more visitors sometimes from the other 66 parkruns in New Zealand, some from the 21 other countries that parkrun operates from. We welcome them all! parkrun - it’s one word and all lower case, is truly an inclusive event encouraging participants from all walks of life. We welcome walkers
and runners, wheelchair users, visually impaired & hearing impaired participants, pushchairs and buggies (and of course the little people seated in them), dogs are welcome too - but must be on a short, hand-held, non-retractable lead (waist harnesses are NOT permitted) and a global safety requirement that all under 11year old children must be within arm’s length of a designated adult. From the age of 4 people can register for parkrun and begin their journeys towards various Milestones, there is no upper age limit and currently New Zealand has the only +100 year participant. Come down (Motu Quay) and join in the fun on Saturday mornings.
We have a 'First-Timers Welcome' at 7:45am we set the whole group off at 8:00a.m and our Volunteer Team are there until our Tail Walker finishes. We would love to see you soon.
Pegasus Woodend Women’s Institute
Hello everyone and we’d like to wish you all a heartfelt if belated Happy New Year. We have begun 2026 with a lot of fun and celebrations. In January we had an outing to Lavender Fields in Waikuku Beach a very enjoyable day with a tour from the owners and lots of information about lavender and its products, this was followed by lunch at cocoa black and lots of browsing through the gift shop and bookstore. In February we held our AGM at a member’s house where we wound up 2025 and began looking ahead to 2026, we were able to make welcome two new members, both of whom joined us for meetings last year
presided over by Ann Jelfs, President of the North Canterbury Federation. The highlight so far this year was the annual WI’s National Indoor Bowls tournament, this year it was held in
before deciding to join. The meeting was followed by a delicious BBQ lunch and social time enjoyed by all but two members who were unable to attend, the committee members for 2026 were also decided the nominations being
Ashburton two team of three attended with supporting members, out of 11 teams who participated Pegasus Woodend team 2 came 9th the other team Pegasus Woodend team 1 came first and were crowned the WI’s National champions. Photos show the champions team, team one Trish Milne, Helet Van Rensburg and Maureen Stevens, and team two with cheerleaders, Mavis Elms, Val Bennett, Pam Cleeve, Julie Robinson and Ingrid Eck. We welcome new members if interested or just want to come along to see what we get up to please contact Julie Robinson Secretary on 021 669 747 or Pam Cleeve 021 170 9895.
