A funeral as unique as you are.
Editor’s Note
By Debs Taylor-Hayhurst, Editor – The Woodpecker
Tēnā koutou
It may be a little late to say Happy New Year, but I’ll say it anyway. I hope you all enjoyed a special festive season spent with your whānau and friends. At the time of writing, summer seems to have taken an unexpected break - but here’s hoping it remembers where it left us and returns soon!
27) following a resignation for personal reasons. If you have a little time to spare and would like to be involved in supporting our community, we would love to hear from you.
This month, I’d love to acknowledge our Woodpecker Community Trust Christmas Thank You Evening, held on Wednesday 26 November at The Bunker. It was a wonderful night with a fabulous turnout of over 65 people enjoying great food, shared laughter, and good company. Both the Chair and I took the opportunity to briefly thank the many people who contribute their time, energy, and support to The Woodpecker - without you, this publication simply wouldn’t happen.
I’m also putting out a friendly plea for help. We are currently seeking a volunteer as Ravenswood Distributor to join our team, with details highlighted on the front page and further information on page 37.
In addition, we are looking for a Ravenswood deliverer (see page
A reminder too that a digital version of The Woodpecker is available for those who would like to join our mailing list, and the link is also shared across several local Facebook pages as well as the 5,000 printed copies delivered to letterboxes each month, thanks to our wonderful distributors and deliverers. Every two years, our Board reviews advertising costs to ensure we remain sustainable. From 1 January 2026, a small price increase has been applied, details of prices are on page 45, and we sincerely thank our advertisers for their continued support.
Finally, please enjoy this month’s read - don’t forget to keep an eye out for Mr Woody Woodpecker, who is hiding somewhere in these pages once again!

Woodend - Sefton Community Board
Woodend Beach Recreation Facilities
The Woodend Beach Domain Playground, Toilets, and Carpark are being renewed due to aging infrastructure, safety concerns, and flooding around the existing playground. Consultation on the proposed plan took place in Sept/Oct last year. At the December meeting the Board approved the Woodend Beach Master Plan which will go out for tender and includes:
• An exciting new playground in the dunes which will include traditional play elements but also focus on providing opportunities for natural play . For details of the design look for the Board December agenda on the Council website.
• A new toilet block in the existing location but reoriented to face the car park with four individual accessible unisex stalls, including a bench for changing and an external shower.
Path along SH1 between Ravenswood & Woodend
• The carpark will be releveled and resurfaced to support better water runoff as well as being reconfigured for easier navigation It has been great to see so many people using this much needed shared path which was completed in December. The Board had advocated for this path for some time.

Chamber Gallery Rangiora
19-year-old illustrator and painter, Amelia Green presents a collection of beach vibes. For many of us, the beach is tied to joy, memory, and a sense of ease, whatever “summer” means in our own lives. These works explore that emotional connection. Living in Aotearoa surrounded by beautiful coastlines, Amelia responds to that in her art. Through colour, light, and simplified forms, she captures small moments of calm, the kind of feelings the ocean gives us without needing to say anything at all.

SMART Landscaping: Bringing a Little Extra Help into Your Garden
As gardeners, we all know how much love and time goes into keeping our outdoor spaces looking their best. But did you know your garden can now help you in return? With SMART landscaping technology becoming more accessible, you can enjoy a garden that practically looks after itself—while you get to enjoy the parts you love most.
Automated Irrigation: Watering Made Easy
Imagine never having to wonder whether your garden has had enough water. With an automated irrigation system, you can set your worries aside. These clever systems check the weather forecast and adjust watering for you. If rain is on the way, they pause; if a dry spell is coming, they step up. Your plants get exactly what they need, and you save precious water.
Outdoor Lighting: Setting the Mood
Whether you enjoy a cuppa outside in the evening or like to highlight a special corner of your garden, SMART lighting makes it easy. With a quick tap on your phone, you can brighten pathways, add soft ambience, or even change colours for special occasions. You’re in control of the atmosphere— without touching a single switch.
Garden Sensors: A Little Garden Wisdom at Your Fingertips
Wouldn’t it be helpful to know exactly when your plants need water or nutrients? SMART garden sensors give you just that. They keep an eye on soil moisture, plant health, and nutrient levels, and send you a gentle alert
Garden Club
when something needs attention. It’s like having a gardening assistant that never sleeps!
Robot Lawnmowers: Let Someone Else Do the Mowing
If mowing is one of your least favourite chores, you’re not alone. A robot lawnmower can take it off your hands entirely. Once you set it up, it quietly trims your lawn on a schedule you choose, then pops back to its charging station when it’s done. Your lawn stays neat—and you save your energy for more enjoyable garden tasks.
Weather Stations: Knowing Your Garden Better
A small weather station in your backyard can give you real-time information about temperature, humidity, rainfall, and wind right where you live. This helps you decide when to plant, fertilise, or protect delicate treasures from sudden weather shifts. It’s a simple tool that can make a big difference.
Why You Might Love Going SMART
It saves you time and physical effort Your garden becomes more sustainable Your plants get personalised care You can keep an eye on things even when you’re not at home And over time, you may even save money
A
More Relaxed, Greener Gardening Future
By adding even a little SMART technology to your garden, you open the door to easier maintenance, healthier plants, and more time to enjoy the beauty you’ve created. Technology and nature can work beautifully together—and your garden might just thank you for it.

Time Commitment
▪ Approximately 1 hour per month

Prompt distribution helps ensure The Woodpecker is delivered to households on time and keeps our community informed.

Operation Cover-Up
Twenty-six years after its beginning, Operation Coverup is still going strong. Two weeks ago, around 100 knitters and crocheters from around Canterbury, came together and brought all the items they had made over the last six months blankets, jerseys, beanies, scarves, mittens and toys as well as other goods such as stationery, toiletries and linen - all to be sent to where they are needed in Eastern Europe. Since Liz Clarke started Operation Coverup 26 years ago, over 165,000 blankets have been sent - as well as over 140,000 other items. With the cost of wool increasing, donations of wool are gratefully received, and
more people to knit and crochet are also very welcome to join us.
We also run a second-hand clothing shop at 176 King St, Rangiora, (open Tuesday - Friday
10am - 3pm) where you can buy good quality second-hand clothing, and donations of clothing, wool and money can be dropped off.
There are several groups in the region - Kaiapoi and Rangiora libraries, as well as retirement villages and other groups.
If you would like more information, please ring Anne on 021 1723 089.

“The Alpine Winter Festival, which will be in its fifth-year next year, has fast become an iconic event that brings tourists, economic growth and a bucket load of fun to the Hanmer Springs village.
We are excited to back this brilliant event and be part of the festivities during winter 2026.”
The festival, which runs for two weeks from 4 – 18 July 2026, is expected to attract around 40,000 visitors to the region. From the ice-skating rink to light displays, husky racing, star gazing, alpine markets and more, there will be more than 40 activities and events across 15 days.
“We’re absolutely chuffed that the Alpine Winter Festival is happening this year with the fantastic support of MainPower,” says Sarah Wiblin, General Manager of Hanmer Springs
Thermal Pools and Spa. “We can’t wait to see our biggest and best festival yet.”
Whiffen says MainPower is fully committed to making the most of the opportunity to support the businesses and wider community of Hanmer Springs.
“We intend to have our teams on the ground throughout the festival, answering questions and providing information for our customers. We’re looking forward to strengthening our ties to this region and celebrating everything special about Hanmer Springs.”

PEGASUS COMMUNITY NEWS
NEW COMMUNITY WATCH CAR REVEAL
Out in the miserable weather last night, celebrating the reveal of our new Community Watch car. The original car was gifted to the Pegasus Residents Group Incorporated (PRGI) in 2015 by the then developer, Todd Property, who had been using it as a site security vehicle inherited from the original developer, Infinity Group. The current car, a 2002 Honda CRV has now done 314,000 km, which is 82% of the way to the moon.

NEW COMMUNITY WATCH CAR REVEAL
The Community watch team has a dedicated team of 30 volunteers who give their time to run weekly patrols of 2-3 hours, including extra patrols during the school holidays. The patrol covers the entire Pegasus community and has recently been extended to include the commercial businesses in Ravenswood.
On average, the patrols cover 6,000 km a year, which, when coupled with PRGI’s community-funded CCTV network, helps keep Pegasus safe. Patrol logs are shared with local police, and statistics provide definitive proof of reduced crime rates following these interventions.
The new car, a Kia Stonic, is due to go out on its first patrol in the coming days. We always welcome new volunteers.
The retired, trusty workhorse is now up for sale, “one careful owner, only driven on Sundays!” - Please get in touch if you're interested in buying, $3,000 ono.

From the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade, we would like to wish our community a happy New Year. We hope it proves to be a healthy and safe one for you all.
Since it is the first month of the year as I write this, let’s start on a positive first for the Woodend Brigade. Our first female driver (having gained that qualification 6 years ago) is now our first female Station Officer – SO Laura Jory.
This qualification is not given lightly; it must be earned by a member. It requires some intensive training culminating in skills which include –primarily, leadership, identifying risks at a call and being able to manage the crew at the incident. You need the ability to be able to assume command at a wide range of incidents, including but not restricted to – fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical
emergencies, hazardous substance incidents and in the last few years, natural disasters. Ever since Laura joined 17 years ago, she has proved to be a very capable member. I have watched her grow into her role over the years, coming on board with her husband. They were actively sought to join the Brigade, as at the time, they owned a local business and were able to turn out during the day to calls. Laura was happy as a firefighter, but her ability to tackle everything led her to doing her Qualified Firefighter Course and then her Senior firefighter course, all whilst juggling a family and a business and keeping very fit.
In 2019 / 2020, we were desperately short of drivers during the day and our Chief Fire Officer L. Grant at that time, thought she would be perfect, not only for her availability, but also for her competency.
All the members can see she has leadership qualities and she has gained their respect in just being able to do anything asked of her – and do it well. Thank you, Laura, for your time and the effort – its’ much appreciated.

“Keeping
cool!”
Keeping pets out of hot cars, exercising when it is cooler and providing shade seem common sense. Also, avoiding hot pavements and sand to prevent pad burns. However, some breeds of cats and dogs, especially those with short noses or long coats, may need some extra help if the weather heats up.
Have you tried.....
- ice cubes in their water bowls or ice treats (they can even be flavoured).
- cooling mats seem to be very effective and comfortable.
- fans, sprinklers or misting their coat with water. Evaporating water is a great cooler.
- paddling pools and pet safe icecream (we have it at the clinic)!
So keep them cool this summer and remember, prevention is better than cure.
