ADULTS 55+ MONTHLY OUTLOOK

by Rev. Pierce Drake

Grace and peace to you! I want to share something important coming up in the life of our church, the Unto Him Men’s Conference, a powerful weekend retreat for men of all ages right here at Men’s Conference 2026 – The Woodlands Methodist Church.
This is not just another event but it’s a moment for men to pause from the hurry of life and surrender more fully to Christ, walk boldly in His truth, and live wholly in Him. Throughout the weekend, men will gather for worship, Spirit-led teaching, honest fellowship, and real reflection on what it means to lead with integrity, love with humility, and live with purpose. The conference takes place Friday evening, March 20, through Saturday afternoon, March 21, and includes four sessions, times of worship, shared meals, and opportunities for deeper connection and encouragement.
We are grateful to welcome several gifted leaders: including Bishop Mark Webb, Dr. Luther Oconer, Rev. Paul Lawler, and myself as we explore what it looks like to follow Jesus faithfully in every season of life.
For many men this will be a turning point. It will be a time to reset, refocus, and be strengthened for the journey ahead. I can think of few things more valuable than men growing deeper in faith, rooted in Christ, and connected to others in genuine community.
Some of you may be thinking of sons, grandsons, nephews, neighbors, or friends who would benefit from this time. Your encouragement and prayers for them are such a gift. If you can attend, please do. If you’re unable to sit in the sessions yourself, I invite you to pray into every moment of this weekend, for openness of heart, clarity of Spirit, and lasting transformation for each man who comes.
Thank you for the ways you uphold our church family, especially our men, with your faithful presence, prayer, and support. We believe God will meet us unto Him in this time.

by Rev. Chris McLain, Pastor of Caring and Adults 55+ Ministry
Last week I explained a new, curveballhitting drill to the baseball team I coach. I then asked, “Have any of you done this drill before?” Zero hands were raised. Halfway through the drill I noticed the difficulties they were having, and after three minutes most the young players looked defeated.
I reminded them, “Guys, this is a new thing. It’s going to take time and repetition. You haven’t done this before, and if everyone could do it, we would all be professionals.”
In 1 Timothy 4:15-16 Paul writes: “Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them… Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them…”
When Paul says to be diligent and persevere, he’s reminding Timothy that repetitive practice is important. Likewise, when he talks about keeping an eye on your life and doctrines he is saying there are holy practices we should participate in.
We are halfway through the season of Lent, and it never fails someone comes and shares with me how they have backslid on their Lenten practice of fasting, reading scripture, or journaling. Guess what? The encouragement to them is the same.
“Friends, this is a new thing [this year]. It’s going to take time and repetition. You haven’t done this spiritual practice before [at this time in your life,] and if everyone could do it, we would all be [perfect.]”
Do something new for Lent.
It’s ok to start or re-start today.
And if you will do it with the power of the Holy Spirit; it’s way easier than hitting a curveball.

Introduced on a blind date during college and now married for 75 years, Margery and David Koogler have lived an adventure-filled life. They welcome guests into their home with warm smiles and witty humor, always ready to share their stories — and their Virginia peanuts.
Margery was born March 25, 1928, in Whitfield, Virginia, and grew up on a dairy farm. David was born October 28, 1928, in Augusta County, Virginia, where he also grew up on a farm. After serving in the Army training infantrymen during the Korean War, David began a career as an industrial engineer. His work led the couple to move 35 times throughout the United States and abroad.
One remarkable moment came in Iran in 1979, when David traveled there to negotiate a zinc mine venture with the Shah of Iran. Although plans were made to finalize the agreement the following day, a religious holiday delayed the signing. The next day, the Shah was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution. David believes that had he stayed, he likely would not have made it home.
David is quick to credit Margery as “my partner, my friend, in everything we do.”
The couple fondly recall their 11 years living in Sewell, Chile, where their two children were born. David ran operations at El Teniente in the Andes Mountains, the world’s largest underground copper mine, while Margery taught first grade at the American school. Now retired, they serve as advisors to the Mark-Dana Corporation and continue to live joyful lives of faith, thankful for God’s many blessings.

Some of the greatest emotional, physical, and financial challenges faced by caregivers are 1. when is it time to place a loved one in a long-term care facility and 2. what goes into selecting the right one.
