AUGUST 2026 EDITION

THE WOODLANDS METHODIST CHURCH

ADULTS 55 OUTLOOK

+ MONTHLY

WAITING WELL AND BUILDING TOGETHER by Rev. Drew Essen Executive Pastor Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the privilege of worshiping across our campuses as we’ve journeyed through our Giants sermon series. One of the greatest blessings has been seeing our church family in each community and reflecting together on the life of Abraham. Abraham’s story reminds us that some of God’s greatest work happens during seasons of waiting. God gave Abraham a vision long before he could see its fulfillment, and yet Abraham continued to walk faithfully. In many ways, our church finds itself in a similar season, trusting that God’s promises will come to pass in God’s perfect timing. As we celebrated Beyond Sunday in July, we paused to give thanks for all God is doing through the Beyond campaign. Across our church, construction is underway, ministry spaces are taking shape, and lives are already being impacted through local and global missions. While we have not yet seen the full picture of all God has in store, we are beginning to see His promises take shape before our eyes. Every piece of equipment and each step of progress across our campuses is a reminder that God is continuing to build something far greater than buildings. These projects represent new opportunities to welcome our neighbors, strengthen families, invest in the next generation, and share the hope of Jesus Christ with our communities and around the world. This summer has brought exciting milestones. Construction is now underway on the permanent home for The Church at Montgomery. Progress continues at Woodforest as expanded worship and discipleship spaces begin to take shape. At The Woodlands Campus, work continues on The Loft and new learning environments for The Woodlands Methodist School, creating spaces that will serve children, students, families and our Español congregation for years to come. Beyond our campuses, your generosity continues to strengthen mission partnerships, support church planting across Latin America, expand the reach of ZOE Empowers in Eswatini and help meet practical needs through organizations like the Montgomery County Food Bank. As a church family, we know that every season brings both celebrations and challenges. Yet through each one, we have the opportunity to keep our eyes fixed on Christ, trusting that He is faithful to lead His church. Thank you for continuing to care for one another, to worship faithfully and to remain focused on the mission God has given us. Hebrews 10:23 reminds us, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” That same faithfulness sustained Abraham, and it continues to sustain us today. Even as we wait for projects to be completed and for future ministry opportunities to unfold, we can be confident that God is at work forming His people, preparing the way and accomplishing far more than we can imagine. Thank you for your faithful prayers and your partnership in the work God is doing through our church. Because of you, we are moving beyond what we could accomplish on our own and stepping into all God has prepared for the future. I am grateful to serve as one of your pastors, and I look forward to all that God will continue to do in and through our church in the months and years ahead.

HOW’S YOUR TEMPERATURE? by Rev. Chris McLain, Pastor of Caring and Adults 55+ Ministry The Gospels of Matthew and Luke share the “parable of leaven,” a.k.a. yeast. Typically, it’s a lesson about how great the kingdom of God can become and how a small encounter can make a large impact. If we do a little scientific dive, we find out that yeast is most active between 80 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. If you watch baking shows or have a proving drawer in your home, this is the temperature range held in those drawers. By placing leavened dough in the proving drawer, it accelerates the fermentation process so the yeast can rise and the bread can be ready to bake more quickly. These same temperatures inside the human body would cause severe hypothermia. Fifteen degrees lower? Death. As followers of Jesus, we already know God can bring to life that which is dead. Ephesians chapter 2 states, “You were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of the world…But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ … it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.” This is the initial and eternal proving. When we are given a purpose, that which was near to death inside of us brings forth a feast of righteousness. But there is still a continual and daily proving to be done. Jesus says in Luke 9:23, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Each day this month, I’d like you to engage this question through journaling, prayer or discussions with your accountability partner or small group: Am I contributing to the rapid growth of the kingdom of God by spending time reflecting on my humanity, being affirmed in my salvation through faith in Christ and being led by the Holy Spirit? If the answer is “Yes,” then you are embodying the parable of leaven.

MIDWEEK PRAYER We invite you to join us every Wednesday at noon in Robb Chapel at The Woodlands Campus for our Midweek Prayer Service. This is an opportunity to pause in the middle of the week to worship God, listen to His Word and be guided in Spirit-led prayer. We hope you’ll join us.

CELEBRATING OUR NATION’S 250TH ANNIVERSARY On Independence Eve (July 3), members, friends and family came together to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary at the StarSpangled Salute at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The festive evening featured a performance by the Houston Symphony.

As the music filled the pavilion, patrons waved their lighted American flags in a moving display of patriotism. The audience sang along to beloved classics, including “God Bless America.” The Star-Spangled Salute was a memorable way to honor America’s milestone anniversary through music, community, and patriotic spirit.

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP In June, representatives from Texas Disability Rights and the Montgomery County Registrar’s Office educated our Low Vision Support Group on various types of accessibility to help members vote efficiently in upcoming elections. Friday, August 14, in Hayes Hall is the next meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend. Contact Anita Willis awillis@twmc.org

AN INTERVIEW WITH “THE COOKIE LADY”

By Linda Allen and Anita Combs, Congregational Care Members 90+ Team It is impossible to count all the lives Mary Grace (MG) Randerson has touched. At 98 years old, MG hasn’t slowed down at all. She is known as “The Cookie Lady,” baking dozens of cookies, or sometimes cakes, at a moment’s notice. She bakes for the prison ministry, the Craft Circle bake sale, neighbors, police departments, the Gospel Hour, youth groups, hospice patients, and to have some on hand for an unexpected need. “This is what I am called to do,” she says, “take care of everyone.” MG learned this trait from her parents, who raised six of their own children and two nephews in a four-bedroom home. They also gave shelter to 38 people in their lifetime. “There was always someone sleeping in the barn,” says MG. “My parents taught me to love.”

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our Prayer Shawl Ministry ministers to church members facing health issues by offering comforting, handmade prayer shawls that are crocheted, knitted, or quilted to represent the covering of Christ. The Psalmist wrote, “He (the Lord) will cover you with His feathers...” (Psalm 91:4). Our prayer shawls are tangible ways our members experience the nearness of God through the prayers of His saints. Each stitch and thread is covered in Christ’s love as these women pray for the recipients that will be receiving the prayer shawl. Our prayer is that recipients feel strengthened and loved by the weaving of God’s promises into their lives. If you are interested in joining our ministry, join us on the fourth Friday of every month at 10:00 a.m. in Allen Parlor at The Woodlands Campus.

Mary Grace was born on September 30, 1927, in Austin, Texas. She attended Asbury College, receiving her teaching degree and going on to teach the first grade for 35 years. Two months ago, one of her first-grade students from 60 years ago looked her up on Facebook. He contacted her and shared that MG had made a huge impact on his life. He calls her twice a month now to check on her. She is most proud of her strong Methodist upbringing and that everyone in her family has “stood by their faith.” MG has a plaque in her home that says, “Do not be afraid of change. Be afraid of not changing.” Another nugget of wisdom she shares is, “You can’t always be happy, but you can always have joy.”

CREEKSIDE ESL TEACHER ASSISTANTS Covenant Church at Creekside is a welcoming neighborhood church where everyone is welcome. Join us for Sunday worship in the Worship Center (8555 Creekside Green Drive) at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. in English, or at 1:00 a.m. in Spanish. We are currently seeking ESL Teacher Assistants for our upcoming English as a Second Language classes. Beginning in August, classes will meet on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Creekside Campus, following the Tomball ISD school calendar. As an assistant, you’ll play a vital role in supporting classroom activities, building relationships with students and creating a welcoming learning environment. Contact Anna Vargas at avargas@twmc.org to get involved.

OPEN THE DOOR. SET THE TONE. SHARE CHRIST’S WELCOME. Serving as a Gracious Greeter

A smile. A warm welcome. A kind word. As a Gracious Greeter, you help create a welcoming first impression for everyone who comes to Sunday worship at The Woodlands Methodist Church. Greeters serve by opening doors, greeting guests and members and helping people feel at ease from the moment they arrive. Whether welcoming longtime members or first-time guests, your hospitality helps people feel seen, valued and at home. When needed, you’ll also direct visitors to the Connection Point Information Desk for additional assistance. You don’t need any special training — just a friendly spirit and a heart for hospitality. As Romans 15:7 (ESV) reminds us, “Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you.” Greeters arrive about 50 minutes before worship, serve until the service begins and then join the congregation for worship. If you’d like to make a meaningful difference through simple acts of kindness, we’d love to have you join the Gracious Greeters team. For more information, contact Deb King, our Connections Director, at 281.297.5963.

FAREWELL SUSAN GOLDSMITH, CARING MINISTRY After nearly 20 years at TWMC, one chapter is preparing to close and another one is about to begin. As I say goodbye, my heart is filled with gratitude for the privilege to walk alongside you in ministry, first in the music department and then in Caring Ministries. I started in September 2006 in the music department working alongside Louise Kramer and Bob Horton. I remember in my interview with Louise I said, “I cannot sing, but I could sure keep you organized and enjoy your wonderful music.” I worked with them for 9 years before I was approached by Cliff Riter to join him in Caring Ministries. I told Cliff to let me think and pray on it, and I’d get back to him…well, the rest is history. I have spent the last 11 years in Caring Ministries; honestly, I have never been happier! The honor and privilege have been all mine — to walk beside you, celebrating life’s joyful times and facing difficult journeys with the loss of a loved one. While I hope I have helped and encouraged you, I know that I have received far more than I gave. THANK YOU! Thank you for trusting me, praying with me and serving Christ beside me. We have made a good team. Like my mom used to say, “There is no ‘I’ in team.” we have done ministry together side by side. You have shaped me, strengthened my faith and given me memories I will treasure. As I begin this new chapter, I look forward to more quality time with family, coffee in the morning with my husband, more trips to Tucson to see my granddaughter, playing in the dirt (gardening) and getting back to watercolor painting. My prayer is that God will continue to do GREAT things here at TWMC, and bless each of you on your journey. THANK YOU for the privilege and honor to walk with you! I’ll see you around the campus, maybe even come and exercise with you. Blessings and Peace, Susan
