TheWoodlands Township invites families and friends to celebrate the spirit of the holidays with a spin around The Ice Rink. Share in the fun and magic of the season with an afternoon of ice skating and hot cocoa right here in The Woodlands!

The Ice Rink is open daily until January 15, 2018. The 21,000-square-foot permanent facility opened in 2016 and features a state-of-the-art sound system, tables for parties and concessions for purchase. Admission includes skate rental.

If small skaters need a little assistance with balance, gliders are available to rent. There is also an enclosed skating area for children to get their bearings before taking the ice in the big rink.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS to Make Your Yard Lovelier in the Spring

As the winter season eventually gives way to spring, it is important to take some steps to ensure that your yard stays healthy and green.

1. Follow the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program promoted by Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. IPM integrates best practices for control of pests and diseases. It includes preventive cultural practices, monitoring, mechanical controls, biological controls, and chemical controls, if all else fails. For more complete information, call the Montgomery County Master Gardeners Hotline at 936-539-7824.

2. Water your lawn only when the Weekly Irrigation Recommendation email advises it. Every week, WJPA sends out this e-blast to more than 21,000 residents of The Woodlands with irrigation recommendations based on evapotranspiration information as well as rainfall. If you’re not on the email list, go to www.wjpa.org and sign up for email.

3. Always use organic matter when installing turf or other vegetation. You can accomplish this either by making your own or buying it from a facility that is certified organic. For more information, see www.findacomposter.com.

4. Mow winter weeds before they create seed heads instead of using weed and feed products.

5. Give a gift of landscape design (perhaps to yourself). If you want something less expensive but still of value, purchase a landscaping book. A large number of them, many featuring Texas landscape designs, are on the market.

6. Mulch flower beds and shrubs. It saves water, helps prevent disease and weeds, and helps keep the soil at a more moderate temperature.

7. Check your irrigation system. Make sure your sprinkler heads are spraying in the proper direction and not watering sidewalks, driveways and streets. If you haven’t done so

already, schedule a free inspection ($75 value) by the W.I.S.E. Guys. Go to the WJPA website to sign up.

8. If you mow the yard yourself, get your mower tuned up and the blades sharpened.

9. If you plan to buy topsoil next year, buy carefully. Much topsoil has nutsedge in it. Nutsedge is almost impossible to eradicate. Buy your topsoil from a reputable dealer and ask where it comes from.

10. Thou shalt not commit crepe murder by over-pruning crepe myrtles or any other shrub or tree. Knuckling of crepe myrtles shortens their lives, encourages disease and pest damage, and overall damages the tree.

Following these practices can give you a head start on any problems that may arise in your yard. It will also save you money in the long run.

WINTER LANDSCAPE with Possumhaw Deciduous Holly

For showy seasonal color, the shrub or small tree, Possumhaw holly, is unequaled. This east Texas native adapts to a variety of soil types, tolerates changes in moisture and heat as well as flourishing in part shade to full sun. It is not surprising that this beautiful tree has been designated a Texas Superstar,® a designation for plants that have passed field trials and proven to be successful and beautiful in the Texas landscape.

Possumhaw holly is a deciduous holly which sheds its dark green glossy leaves in the fall, leaving a breath-taking display of brilliant red berries. Cutting a few of the branches of berries can provide a stunning indoor holiday decoration. Numerous song birds are attracted to the natural food provided by the Possumhaw berries. In spring, when this tree is blooming,

its small white blossoms serve as a nectar plant for native pollinators.

This hardy small tree is very low maintenance in the landscape and needs very little pruning. Planted in numbers, it creates a beautiful and effective screen. Thriving in challenging conditions such as high heat, poor drainage or fairly dry conditions, the Possumhaw holly is extremely adaptable. Under normal conditions, no pests are seen on these trees. When grown in partial shade, the tree can reach a height of 20 feet. In full sun, the plant may mature into an 8-10 foot tall accent shrub.

Consider adding a Possumhaw holly to your home landscape. The ideal planting months for Possumhaw holly in The Woodlands are January and February. Check for these trees at plant nurseries that stock Texas native plants and trees.

REMEMBER: The Woodlands Covenants require that trash and recycling carts must be stored out of public view. Leaving trash carts out longer than necessary detracts from the curb appeal of neighborhoods and becomes an eyesore. Trash and recycling receptacles may be placed at the curb on the day prior to trash pickup and should be removed from the curb by the end of the day of trash pickup.

Alden Bridge

It’s going to be another magical December in The Woodlands! We truly have one of the best places to live during the holidays.

We encourage safety practices particularly during this month, so stay safe, and be aware of your surroundings while you’re out and about. Use the Sheriff’s Vacation Watch if you’re taking a holiday vacation, lock your house and car doors, and don’t leave any packages visible in the car when you go shopping.

We always skip our monthly board/residents meeting in December, so our next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on January 9, 2018, at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest. Our guest speaker hasn’t been confirmed yet, so please watch our Facebook page, website and email newsletter for this information.

We look forward to this every year – it’s time for the Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest! Alden Bridge has some of the most beautifully decorated homes in The Woodlands. Our judges will view all homes in our village between December 11 and 16, 2017, so be sure to leave your lights on every night during this period. One Best Home and one Best Neighborhood or group of homes will be selected, and winners will be awarded on Tuesday, December 19, 2017, between 6 and 8 p.m.

Alden Bridge is fueled by committed volunteers, including area reps on our village association board and members of the Residential Design Review Committee (RDRC). Consider joining us! It’s a great way to give back to your community and we definitely have fun, too. Village elections are held in February, and filing begins in late December. In 2018, Alden Bridge will elect nine at-large area representatives for two-year terms, plus five RDRC members for one-year terms. You can

obtain the needed information and filing forms from the Township website.

Cochran’s Crossing

The Astros have continued to set the example of teamwork that the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association would like to follow in our community. We also believe Hurricane Harvey, as devastating as it was, demonstrated the way The Woodlands and the entire Houston area could come together to meet a challenge. That effort will continue.

As Bob Dailey of The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA) reported at our September village meeting, plans are being made for a drainage study at Capstone and Twinberry. Neighborhood meetings are also planned. At the same meeting, Paul Brown, board member of MUD 47, reported $1.3 million was spent in MUD 47 to address concerns after the Memorial Day flood last year. In addition, Township Board Chairman Gordy Bunch attended the meeting and reported on items including the Township’s conservative budgeting approach, recent increases in law enforcement, ongoing support for a performing arts center,

incorporation, post-Harvey flood relief in The Woodlands and road construction.

The WJPA comments, as well as those of Gordy Bunch, The Woodlands Township Board Chairman, at the same meeting, are examples of the communication that is part of the service provided by the Cochran’s Crossing board. Cochran’s Crossing Village Association also has a website, Facebook and newsletter.

College Park

The Holiday Lighting Contest is an anticipated tradition here in The Woodlands. College Park judges will be out and about on the evenings of December 9, 2017, and December 10, 2017. Get your lights up early and turn them on in the early evening starting on December 9, 2017, for your chance to participate in the contest. There are two awards given for each village: Best Home and Best Neighborhood, cul-de-sac or

street. Winners will receive a surprise visit to your home on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, when we designate your home or neighborhood the winner. See further details in this magazine on page 7.

The Water-Wise Village Challenge is on again for 2017-2018. Sign up and pledge to turn off your sprinklers until April. By participating you earn points for College Park. Cash awards are given to each village based on points. In College Park, these funds are used to provide college scholarships for students who reside in one of our neighborhoods. These funds can also support other activities that you enjoy free of charge throughout the year, such as the Spooktacular in October and the Poolooza in May! You can sign up on the Township website under the Environmental Services link.

December is here, and the holiday season is in full swing. What a perfect time of the year to share the wonderful amenities of The Woodlands and Creekside Park Village with visiting

friends and relatives. From the skating rink, shopping, dining and strolling through the Town Center area to our own Village Green and Crossroads Square. This year we have enjoyed continued growth of our village with the opening of Crossroads Square, in addition to Creekside Park Village Green, offering shops and dining closer to home. If you have not had a chance to visit and walk around the various shops and restaurants, I encourage you to do so. Walking the pathways and sidewalks surrounding the Creekside Park Village’s unique shopping venues and enjoying a cup of coffee, lunch or dinner at Village Green Square or Crossroads Square validated why we chose to live in The Woodlands and have purchased our third Woodlands home in Creekside Park Village. It truly is a great way to take a step back and relax from this busy time of the year and enjoy what our community has to offer.

Grogan’s Mill

Flooding in Grogan’s Point during Hurricane Harvey continues to be an issue, as discussed at the Grogan’s Point Resident Association meeting on November 13, 2017. Jim Stinson, General Manager of The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA), presented a draft version of hydraulic models which showed flooding progress during Harvey. While in need of tweaking, it dramatically revealed the progress of flooding. The two MUDs that serve Grogan’s Point are working with the WJPA to see what more they can do, if anything, to mitigate flooding caused by Spring Creek overflowing and migrating through Grogan’s Point to Panther Branch. If you would like to view the model, contact the WJPA to make arrangements.

If you haven’t done so, support the Water-Wise Village Challenge and pledge to conserve water. Each village earns two points for every resident who pledges before December 31, 2017, and one point after January 1, 2018.

Grogan’s Mill is in the hunt for first through third place. Go to www.surveymonkey.com/r/GDZTGKG to make the pledge. It takes but two minutes.

Applications to run for office in Village Association Boards and the Residential Design Review Committees may be submitted starting Thursday, December 28, 2017, and closing Thursday, January 18, 2018. You must be a resident and/or property owner of the Village where you want to run for office. Elections will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Not only can you do some Christmas shopping for unusual and memorable gifts, but there are still plenty of fruits, vegetables, food, other crafts, pet treats, coffee and much more available for purchase. 2017 Holiday Lighting & Decorating Contest

The Indian Springs Village Association will be participating in The Woodlands 2017 Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. The two

categories will be Best Home and Best Neighborhood in Indian Springs. A neighborhood may be broadly defined as a few homes located in close proximity or an entire cul-de-sac or subdivision. Winners of the Best Home award will receive a yard sign and a commemorative plaque. Winners of Best Neighborhood will receive a yard sign and Ice Rink passes. Judges will be in the area December 8, 2017, through December 11, 2017. The winners will be contacted by December 15, 2017, and announced on our website, www.indianspringsvillage.com.

Panther Creek

We had much to be thankful for on the recent Thanksgiving Day and this entire year; now let the holidays begin in full swing.

I would be quite remiss if I failed to thank all the volunteers who made the Fall Flea Market such a success. Panther Creek community members organized the event, showed up at 3 a.m. to direct traffic, directed vendors into the market, assisted buyers and supervised the cleanup after so many happy shoppers headed home with their new treasures. So, thank you, to the entire crew for continuing all your work for so many years on this community event held twice each year.

Also, many Panther Creek neighborhoods held Neighborhood Night Out parties to encourage the true neighborhood spirit of our community and to spread information about safety and conservation. Fun and fellowship was had by all. If your street did not have a party, contact your Panther Creek Village Association to learn how you can host, with much support from The Woodlands Township, such a party next year.

Township, local, state and constitutional proposal elections were held last month. THANK YOU, if you voted. If you did not vote, those we just thanked made your choices for you. Even if you are totally pleased with every government action from dog catcher to national issues, those who we allow to make the rules need to hear your voice. Over the past few years, your Village Association has had a scholarship program to help local students who would benefit most from encouragement and additional financial support in their pursuit of education beyond high school. Board members are reformulating our criteria and mission to even better serve real needs in our Panther Creek community. Very shortly, members of your Village Association board will be driving by your home looking for a home and street to be awarded the coveted Best Holiday Decorations Awards. Last year’s winners are ineligible this year, so the field is wide open for your holiday decorations to win. If you have been procrastinating, please get those attractive decorations up now. Awards will be delivered with the help of fire trucks and crews from our #1-rated Woodlands Fire Department.

The 11th Annual Sterling Ridge Village BBQ Challenge & Kids Festival was held on October 7, 2017, at Cranebrook Park. Smiles were on the faces of Sterling Ridge residents as they walked to and from each BBQ stand, tasting different types of BBQ and beans, making their own decision on who should be the winner. Strolling from vendor to vendor, kids could talk to John Osbourne about Neighborhood Watch and meet a police person, enjoy a snow cone or some cotton candy, face painting, hot dogs, balloon figurines, a pony ride, and burn off all that sugar in the bounce houses and on the trampoline.

HOLIDAY RECYCLING AND TRASH SERVICE

The Woodlands Township reminds residents that there will be no waste collection on Monday, December 25, 2017. All solid waste services in the community will occur on the day following regular service day. Normal schedule will resume on Monday, January 1, 2018.

Additionally, The Woodlands Recycling Center, located at 5310 Research Forest Drive, will be open regular hours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2017.

Recycling Holiday Boxes and Wrappings

If your recycling cart is full, take advantage of special holiday recycling! On the first service day following December 25, 2017, in each village, additional cardboard boxes, gift boxes and wrapping paper will be picked up for recycling.

• Break down smaller gift and mailing boxes to consolidate into one box.

• Put extra paper wrappings in a paper bag or small box.

• Place bags and boxes at the curb next to the recycling cart.

• The holiday recycling truck is a traditional rear-loading truck reserved only for recyclables.

– No ribbon, decorations, Christmas lights or other items that can easily become tangled

• Failure to follow guidelines will result in items being left at the curb.

• Green trees will be picked up by the yard trimming truck as part of your regularly scheduled services.

Disposing of Flocked Christmas Trees

• Schedule as bulk/heavy pick up by calling 800-800-5804.

• Flocked Christmas trees must be landfilled.

Extra Household Waste

• Requires purchase of a pink extra service tag for $1.75 per tag.

• Purchase tags from The Woodlands Township offices, Kroger (Cochran’s Crossing, Alden Bridge and Sterling Ridge) and Randall’s (Grogan’s Mill and Panther Creek).

• Attach one tag per bag.

• Each bag must weigh less than 40 pounds.

A couple of home safety tips during the holidays:

• Do not announce your vacation plans on social media.

• While traveling use discreet luggage tags that shield your name and address from casual observation.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO MEDICARE CARDS AND Tips to Avoid Common Scams

The Houston Better Business Bureau Education Foundation has advised us that Medicare is removing Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards. Here are some key points they’d like to

share with seniors to help avoid problems in the future:

• The new number will be an 11-digit number that is a mix of numbers and letters assigned to only you.

• The cards are scheduled to be sent out from April 2018 to April 2019.

• You don’t have to do anything to get your new card. Your new card will come in the mail. If someone calls to “confirm your identity” or your Medicare number, or to have you pay money to get yours early, it’s a scam. Do not give them any information, and hang up.

• You have the same benefits. You can start using your new card immediately.

• The card is free. No one should tell you there is a one-time fee or that you will lose benefits if you don’t pay a fee or answer their questions.

• Never give your information to someone who calls you on the phone or comes to your door!

• Medicare fraud, errors or abuse may be reported to the Texas Senior Medicare Patrol at 1-888-341-6187.

Here are some scams that are still being used, taken from the Top 10 list of scams by the Houston Better Business Bureau Education Foundation:

TECH SUPPORT SCAM

A call or pop-up on your computer claims to be from Microsoft (or a computer security company) about a problem on your computer. They say if you give “tech support” access to your hard drive, they can fix it. Instead, they install malware on your computer and start stealing your personal information.

ARREST SCAM

Someone claims to be from the IRS, law enforcement or government; they say they are coming to arrest you for overdue taxes, missing jury duty, etc. They claim you can avoid it by sending them money via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. Another variation is someone claiming you have an overdue loan or bill.

“ARE YOU CALLING YOURSELF?” SCAM

Scammers can make a call look like it’s coming from anywhere. The latest trick puts your number in the Caller ID, which piques your curiosity and gets you to pick up the phone or return the call….and then they’ve snagged you in whatever scam they are running.

DOOR-TO-DOOR SCAM

These scams vary but often include one of the following situations. Your safest course of action to avoid getting caught up in one of these scams is to not open your door to strangers. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch encourages you to acknowledge the person at the door by speaking through the door. • Magazine sales include groups of traveling salespeople who hit whole neighborhoods hard and fast offering magazine subscriptions that (may) never get delivered.

• Utility scams happen when fraudulent utility companies hire and train door-to-door sales representatives to come to your home and convince you they can save you money on your electricity or gas bill. They will either try to gain access to your account information to switch your service without permission, or offer very low rates for the first couple of months then hit you with a steep price hike.

• Alarm system scammers enter your home under the guise of upgrading your current alarm system and then negotiate you into a long-term service agreement (2-5 years) that is very costly to break.

CAN YOU HEAR ME SCAM

You get a call from someone who immediately asks, “Can you hear me?” Or, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit says the caller might ask if that is you by name. Their goal is to get you to answer “Yes.” These phone calls are recorded and edited to make it sound like you authorized a major purchase.

Scammers use these scams because they are successful and play on your emotions to get you to make hasty decisions, and they often go through extensive measures to make themselves appear credible. Remember, they are pros at what they do.

HERE ARE SOME GENERAL PREVENTION TIPS:

• Don’t be pressured into making fast decisions.

• Take time to research the organization. Check them out on bbb.org and search online for reviews to help verify if they are part of a reputable organization.

• Never provide your personal information (address, date of birth, banking information, ID numbers) to people you do not know.

• If you are unsure about a call or email that claims to be from your bank,

utility company, etc., call the business from the number on your bill or the back of your credit card.

• Never send money by wire transfer or prepaid debit card to someone you don’t know or haven’t met in person.

• Never send money for an emergency situation unless you’ve been able to verify the emergency.

The Woodlands Express! Ride in the fast lane

The Woodlands Express service provides a comfortable, convenient and economical way to commute. Destinations include the Texas Medical Center, Greenway Plaza, as well as the Central Business District of Houston. Scheduled service is provided Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Tickets may be purchased at any of the Park and Ride terminals. Gates open at 5 a.m. and are locked at 9 p.m. Park and Ride tickets are available at a cost of $13 round-trip

Recognized for Innovative Recruitment

The Woodlands Township Aquatics Program recently earned the distinction of being named to Aquatics International Magazine’s Best of 2017 list. The magazine recognized the Township’s innovative approach to addressing lifeguard staffing shortages in recent years.

Lifeguards play an invaluable role in the safety of swimmers at the Township’s pools. When applications to work the pools dwindled, the Township Aquatics staff knew a different approach was needed to address recruitment and retention.

The Aquatics team began working with local schools to spread the word about the need for lifeguards, as well as brainstorming new events to attract applicants. The Aquatics holiday party brings former lifeguards back into the fold as well as encouraging new lifeguards to apply. Held on the last day of the high school fall semester, the party includes free food and giveaways. The Township also assists potential lifeguards by offering a discounted cost for their initial review. Later reviews are performed at a regular rate, which helps to ensure that lifeguards feel invested in

To bolster retention, the Aquatics team hosts a variety of competitions at the pools for the lifeguards, a number of fun social events and an awards banquet at the close of the summer season. The combined efforts of the revamped recruitment and retention approach have resulted in an impressive 25 percent increase in applicants since 2015.
