The Lighting of the Doves Festival is a long-standing tradition in The Woodlands that signifies the start of the holiday season in the community. The doves illuminate The Woodlands Town Center, symbolizing hope and peace for the holidays. The Lighting of the Doves Festival features snow play areas, vendor booths, children’s activities and live performances, with the highlight of the events being a special appearance by Santa Claus arriving by sleigh down The Woodlands Waterway® and a fireworks display, weather permitting, at Town Green Park. This event is produced by The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department, and is sponsored by Coca-Cola, Texas Children’s Hospital, Service King, The Woodlands® Development Company and Waste Management.

Relieve Holiday Stress: Take a Town Center Trolley

Let The Woodlands Township make your holiday excursions even better with the Town Center Trolley! Park once and hop aboard a trolley to your favorite shopping and dining destinations in Town Center. Three trolleys will circulate every 10 minutes during peak operating hours around the Mall and Market Street areas. The start of the holiday trolley service will coincide with the Lighting of the Doves Festival November 19, 2016, and will run through December 31, 2016. The Woodlands Township invites families and friends to enjoy ice skating in a new 21,000-square-foot permanent multipurpose facility. The Ice Rink at The Woodlands Town Center opens Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 10 a.m.

The Ice Rink at The Woodlands Town Center is located at 2005 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, 77380, near the north gate entry of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and the intersection of Lake Robbins Drive and Six Pines Drive. The new multi-purpose facility features ice skating in a main room with lighting, a state-of-the-art sound system, tables for parties and concessions. Hours of operation are Monday to Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m., Friday from 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 7 p.m. The Ice Rink is open during special holiday hours on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Weekend admission, Friday to Sunday and school holidays, for a two-hour skate session is $12.50 for adults and $6 for children 5 and under. School holidays are based on the Conroe ISD calendar. Weekday admission, Monday to Thursday, for a two-hour skate session is $10.50 for adults and $5 for children 5 and under. All prices include skate rental.

The Ice Rink at The Woodlands Town Center is generously sponsored by Texas Children’s Hospital – The Woodlands in partnership with Planet Ford and produced by The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department. Built in partnership with the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the facility hosts the Township’s Ice Rink during the winter holidays and becomes the site of the Pavilion’s House of Blues during the Pavilion’s summer performing arts season.

Join the annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest! Each village association coordinates their own contest, including dates and publicity, with support from The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Fire Department. Just decorate the outside of your home for viewing by the judges during the month of December. Decorations may be left up for the month, but should not be up longer than six weeks total. There are two categories: Best Home in the village and Best Neighborhood in the village. Members of each village association serve as contest judges. THE GRASS IS GREENER

AT TOWN GREEN PARK

Just in time for the holidays, The Woodlands Township completed a turfgrass and drainage system renovation at Town Green Park. The park’s main lawn underwent a complete overhaul to improve turf quality, reduce muddy areas and reduce renovation costs after events.

Town Green Park offers four acres of green space, featuring a main lawn,

entertainment stage with natural seating, a children’s literary labyrinth with lifesize Aesop’s fables characters, and a children’s amphitheater for group outings. The park is located along the banks of The Woodlands Waterway ®, between The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and the South Montgomery County Library. It is the downtown central park of The Woodlands Township.

Five inches of soil across the main lawn that spans the length of two football fields was excavated and replaced. In addition, irrigation lateral lines and heads were replaced, and a paver grid system was installed. A bed of sand was then installed, and the entire main lawn was sodded with Tif 419, a hardy and durable blend of Bermuda grass.

By installing an underground paver grid system, the main lawn can support crowds and traffic while providing optimal drainage for rainwater. The renovations ensure that families, friends, and their pets can enjoy a pristine landscape, rain or shine, at Town Green Park — creating cherished memories for many years to come.

Home for the holidays! It always sounds so warm and inviting. The Woodlands Township wishes you a safe and enjoyable holiday season, so here are a few tips to help you stay safe at home and to help keep your home safe when you are not there. Take a few minutes to prepare, and then enjoy your holidays.

• Be sure to lock your doors and set your alarm, even for short trips out of the house. Be sure that your alarm contact information is up to date. Make sure that your family knows how to use your alarm and that visitors know what to do if they accidentally set it off.

• Get to know your neighbors and call in suspicious activity to law enforcement at the numbers below when you see it happening. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.

• If you will be out of town, ask a neighbor to pick up any papers or fliers that are left in your yard.

• Do not open the door to solicitors or anyone you do not know. Speak to them through the door.

• If you will be out of town, have a deputy check the outside of your home while you are away by signing up for Vacation Watch with your local law enforcement agency. To sign up:

SAFETY WHILE SHOPPING

It’s that time of year again, to go shopping for the best deals for the holidays. However, a good deal to you may also make you a target for crime. Before you head out, here are some tips to help keep you safe for the holidays:

• Make sure your vehicle is in good working order before you head out.

• Check to make sure that you don’t have extra items in your purse or wallet that you don’t need. There is no need to take along extra cash, credit cards or checks that you won’t use, so you can leave them in a safe place at home.

• Remove packages and other items you won’t need from your vehicle before you go.

• Look for a well-lit parking space with easy access to the store.

• Lock your vehicle.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

• Don’t leave children or valuables unattended.

• Report suspicious activity to store employees or law enforcement as needed.

• When you are headed to your vehicle, make sure that your children, shopping bags and belongings are secure and that your keys are handy. Do you have everything?

• If something doesn’t seem right when you are walking to your vehicle, go back to the store and ask for store security to escort you.

• If you are driving to another store, hide your items in your vehicle before you leave the current store.

• Check your rear view mirrors to be sure that you aren’t followed home.

• Take your items inside, lock up and enjoy your bargains!

The Fall Village Associations Flea Market will be held November 5, 2016, at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion garage. We can always use volunteers, so contact us if you’d like to sign up. A portion of the profits from sales of booth spaces is divided among the villages based on volunteer participation, and whatever we earn goes directly into our scholarship fund. Shifts are early, 4:30 to 8 a.m. and 8 to 11 a.m., but that gives you the rest of the day for your own pursuits as well as first look at the items for sale. This is a great outlet for our residents since The Woodlands covenants prohibit garage sales. If you don’t want to volunteer, just come by from 7 to 10 a.m. and see what’s for sale. There may be something that you just have to own.

We finished our Yard of the Month program with the award to Donna and Bruce Rill of Fairbranch Circle. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and thanks to everyone who provided nominations! We’ll begin again next April. In December, we’ll have the annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating

contest, and there should be plenty of lights and decorations in the stores right now to help you prepare! We always have beautiful decorations in our village.

The Cochran’s Crossing Fall Festival was bigger and better than ever. Thanks again to Kroger, the Rotary Interact members from area high schools and sponsors that helped out on the event.

Here’s something you can look forward to in the future. It’s the annual holiday lighting displays by many

Cochran’s Crossing Village residents. There will be some recognition and awards given by the village association for the top individual homes and groups of homes. Check the village association website in early December for more information and to have your home registered for judging.

Events represent the community outreach that is an important function of the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association. The village association also assists with two-way communication of residents to the Township and other organizations that have an impact on The Woodlands. The August board meeting was held at the Montgomery County Food Bank, and those planning to attend the fall festival were encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item for donation.

Monthly board meetings are a way the residents’ concerns and interests can be heard. For example, in August covenants involving short-term rentals in residential areas were discussed — what is allowed and what steps can be taken for enforcement. Other discussions included National Night Out, the Township budget, plans to acquire the YMCA facility in Creekside Park, the improvements planned for Bear Branch Pool, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office crime reduction report, and special event policies for use of Township facilities.

Remember, our village association board meetings are open to all, usually on the fourth Tuesday of every month (except December) at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms. November’s meeting will be on November 15.

EVENTS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

College Park

Did you know that 30 percent of all burglaries of a motor vehicle in College Park might be averted by locking the doors? Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy, Jason Hopper, revealed these statistics at our September meeting. While burglary of motor vehicles is down over last year to date, it is evident that many of these burglaries are simply crimes of opportunity. Let’s all make ourselves less apt to be victims by locking our cars up. If possible, park near a light when out and about and always remove valuables from the vehicle or put them out of sight.

Our Flea Market is Saturday, November 5, 2016. This tradition provides Township residents an opportunity to sell furniture, clothing and other items that they no longer have use for. The Woodlands Township has a policy forbidding garage and yard sales. The flea market is held twice a year in the spring and the fall. It will be held rain or shine in the parking garage on Lake Robbins and Six Pines. Come and sell, browse and shop. There is something for everyone!

College Park Village Association invites you to join us at the 3R Bazaar November 12, 2016. Drop off all those oral care packaging and used toothbrushes that I have been reminding you to be saving for recycling and for the Village Challenge. The 3R Bazaar will be at the Township’s Parks, Recreation and Environmental Services facility, located at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive. Shop for cool items such as jewelry, decorative and other common household items all made from recycled materials.

The Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest in College Park is another Woodlands tradition that is made possible through the College Park Village Association. Get your lights out and turned on in early December. See page 7 for more details and information.

Looking even further ahead, please save the date of March 25 on your 2017 calendar. The 7th annual Earth Day GreenUp is an opportunity for you and your entire family to make The Woodlands a better place to live. Families, friends or coworkers team up to clean up. All gear for the cleanup is provided by The Woodlands Township on that date. Plus, you get to attend the Earth Day celebration afterward. We need volunteers from College Park and College Park businesses to sign up a team and help clean up trash in areas designated by the Township staff based on need.

Grogan’s Mill

A National Night Out community event for Grogan’s Point was held September 25, 2016, at Grogan’s Point Park. Folks had a great time greeting, eating and meeting with local public safety fire and police personnel. Also, there was a fierce and highly contested chili cook-off, with many eager tasters and voters. Many had to sample two and three times! In the hotly contested (pun intended) contest, the winners were: 1st place Tracy Ray, 2nd place Rick Entwistle, and 3rd place Mary Lou Fitch. Later, a dessert eating contest was also held. Unfortunately, the voting was spoiled by pouring rain, but people made sure there was little dessert left before heading home for shelter. An informal exit poll, however, declared them all winners.

It is time again for the Panther Creek Village Association Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. Every resident of the village is automatically entered. You have two categories in which to win, the Neighborhood category and the Individual Home category. Our expert judges will be coming by early to mid-December to marvel at your spirit and creativity. After scoring and comparing their picks, they will be awarding prizes and recognition. To give everyone a real chance, last year’s winners are not eligible to win this year. Panther Creek is not only the festive place to be in December, but it is also the caring place. La Niña Could Spell

Drier Weather Ahead

Niño is fading, reducing the torrential rains throughout North America, but its gentler sister, La Niña, is now moving off the U.S. west coast. That could mean that this winter, as well as next spring and summer, may be drier and warmer than usual. At least that’s what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates. The Old Farmers’ Almanac agrees. If drier times are ahead, gardeners may want to take the time now to prepare. Here are some actions you can take now to be a step ahead of problems that may crop up later:

MOWING

St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia go dormant in the winter. At least the tops do. However, that’s when the root system grows. Some residents choose to cut back on mowing their lawns or even not mowing at all during the winter months.

AERATE

This allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate deeply into the soil. It also encourages earthworms, a sure sign of good soil health, to take up residence in your soil. Aeration should be followed by top dressing with compost and a slow-release fertilizer.

COMPOSTING

If you haven’t top dressed your lawn with compost yet, it’s not too late. Compost will work its way into the soil. Good compost that has only organic matter in it is the best choice. If you don’t know where to get organic compost, see findacomposter.com.

FERTILIZING

Spread slow-release, preferably biologic, fertilizer across your lawn.

WATERING

Even though it may be drier than normal, we’ll still get some rain — more than enough to sustain and encourage root growth. Too much watering can encourage undesirable fungi to infect a lawn.

LOW AREAS

If you’ve noticed low areas (or bare spots) in your lawn, now is the time to fill them in — a good lawn and garden soil mixed with compost should take care of the areas.

ANNUALS

Dead and dying annuals need to go. Allowing annuals to overwinter in your yard will only encourage insect pests (like chinch bugs) to hide out. Pull them and dispose of them.

FALLEN LEAVES

Rake these up and either compost them, give them to a friend who composts, bring them over to one of the community gardens in The Woodlands, or put them in green waste bags. Even though a mat of fall leaves may look attractive, leaves will mat up if they are wet, killing grass and encouraging fungal infections.

MULCH

Put fresh mulch around all your bedded plants. Many perennials die back during the winter, but their root systems are still active. (Hibiscus is a good example.) Mulching helps in a number of ways: it keeps the soil at a more constant temperature, holds in moisture, and keeps weeds down.

Hummingbirds delight, bluebirds entertain, purple martins earn gratitude and eagles inspire. Found in nearly every ecosystem, birds are a part of our cultural heritage. A keen observer of nature, Mr. Clark will share his lifelong fascination for the human connection to the life of birds.

From the chorus of songbirds at dawn to the owl’s evening call, birds are a link to time and seasons. Breeding plumage, nesting behavior and migration patterns alert us to the changing seasons, even predicting storms and temperature changes.

“Birds really are the harbinger of things going on,” the naturalist notes. Enlightening and inspiring, the message is often one of triumph and survival in a harsh, changing environment. “Birds are the canary in the mineshaft,” Mr. Clark says. When they are in decline, we need to listen.

Stash some cash in case ATMs and credit card machines are not useable in a disaster.

ATM machines may not work. Grocery stores and other businesses may not be able to accept your credit or debit card. Cash could be the only acceptable means to make a purchase. Some experts say you should have at minimum $150 in cash stashed away. Any amount is good to start with. Take a dollar a week and place it in an envelope in your emergency kit. In just a little time, you will have some cash stashed away for use in emergencies.
