It’s almost time for National Night Out, when america gives neighborhood crime and drugs a going-away party. In true texas style, the Woodlands event is so big, we celebrate for two days!
On saturday, October 1, 2011, from 1 to 5 p.m., law enforcement and public safety agencies gather for a communitywide kick-off celebration at Northshore Park. this free event includes food, fun and public safety and crime-fighting demonstrations by organizations like the FBI, Homeland security and the Woodlands Fire Department. Don’t miss the opportunity to:

Continue the party in your own neighborhood on tuesday, October 4, 2011. Neighbor knowing neighbor is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime in your neighborhood, and National Night Out is a great way to get together. residents are encouraged to gather between 5:30 and 8 p.m. on their street or in a nearby park. Whether it’s something as simple as ice cream cones for the kids or a full-blown potluck dinner, how a neighborhood celebrates is up to the people who live there. the important thing is to get together and just have fun! to register, visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov under National Night Out for the chance to have law enforcement personnel or the fire department visit your party! this year, as part of National Night Out, the Woodlands township will collect nonperishable items to benefit the Interfaith Food Bank, and gently used clothing to be donated to those in need in Montgomery County. Bring canned goods and clothing to the Neighborhood services tent at the National Night Out communitywide kickoff or collect them at your neighborhood party.
Criminals see it as easy shopping for a wide variety of items: laptops, cell phones, GPs devices, stereo systems, even purses and wallets left inside parked vehicles. It takes less than a minute to break into a vehicle and remove items left inside.
Burglary of motor vehicle (BMV) is one of the most reported crimes within the residential neighborhoods of the Woodlands. “It’s such a simple thing to do, and yet many residents either forget to lock their vehicle doors or don’t think it’s necessary,” said Marian leck, director of law enforcement services for the Woodlands township. “Because we are such a safe community, many of our residents are complacent about locking their vehicle and removing valuable items.”
the Woodlands township has made reducing BMVs the focus of its 2010-2011 National Night Out Project 365 and has implemented an awareness initiative called Hide, Lock and Take. this initiative reminds
residents to HIDE their things, LOCK their cars and TAKE their keys.
“People seem to be taking the time to secure their vehicles. as a result, the number of reported BMVs is down considerably from this time last year.”
“law enforcement is aware of the problem, and we have increased our patrols accordingly,” said sgt. Paul Cassidy of the Montgomery County sheriff’s Office, District 6. “However, residents need to make sure they do their part, too. the best place for your vehicle is the garage. If you must leave it outside, make sure all doors are locked, and never leave any item of value within view.”

You might think it’s a little early for news of an October event, but mark it on your calendar right now – sunday, October 30, 2011, is Cochran’s Crossing Village association Fall Festival Day! We’re excited because it figures to be the best yet, offering new attractions and entertainment promised to please all age groups. New games, new fun, new inflatables with lots of prizes and surprises guaranteed to delight. two things that won’t change are food and price. as always, everything comes compliments of the house with our Cochran’s Crossing Kroger pals providing all the goodies. and remember, because the date is as close to all Hallows eve as you can get, the timing is perfect for a Halloween dress rehearsal! the Grogan’s Mill Village association board was saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of one of its valued directors, Bill sargent. Bill chaired the Bylaws Committee, served on the Communications Committee, organized our 2010 Christmas lighting awards program and could always be counted on to volunteer. since the question of ownership of the pedestrian bridge across Grogan’s Mill road was raised, it has now been determined that title belongs to the Woodlands township. this resolves one of the issues concerning the desire of the Grogan’s Mill Village association Board, in support of many Grogan’s Mill residents, to see the aesthetic appearance of the bridge upgraded to mark this entrance into the Woodlands. as always, we encourage Grogan’s Mill residents to see your Board at work or bring to our attention problems and issues where we may be able to help. We also want your ideas on making Grogan’s Mill a better place to live.

Charles and lori arrived in Grogan’s Mill in the summer of l998. they happily moved back to texas from arizona, where the lawns were more rock than grass. their front yard is well shaded and filled with ferns, ginger and ornamental grasses, as well as
begonias, lantana, daylilies and knockout roses. Blooms appear from azaleas, rose of sharon and a camellia bush…Charles’ favorites. they recently added the rock edging and have enjoyed watching it all come beautifully together.

Congratulations to Indian springs Village association board member richard stromatt and his team of volunteers. Once again, Indian springs Village was awarded the trophy and prize for the Best Community entry for the 4th of July Parade in 2011! this year’s float was thoughtfully constructed and reflected the 2011 theme of “Celebrating the american Dream” by using items representative of the Woodlands. Photos of area sculptures, including the Dreamer and original founders George and Cynthia Mitchell, highlighted the float. activities emblematic of the american Dream in our hometown were all included on the float - area youth dressed for recreation, athletics and education. live trees symbolizing the Woodlands and patriotic music helped make the float fun and festive. Taste of the village
the seventh annual taste of the Village will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on saturday, October 22, 2011, in the Indian springs shopping Center. the event is a fundraiser for scholarships to seniors from Indian springs Village who are graduating from local high schools. In addition, the taste of the Village serves as a community social event where residents can be exposed to area businesses, sample food from local restaurants and enjoy music and children’s activities. the Woodlands township Board of Directors recently selected an option for future waste and recycling collection with service scheduled to begin in 2012. a new solid waste contract with Waste Management is expected to take effect at that time. the new option provides significantly improved recycling services with the least cost and least impact to residents, while taking into account that waste disposal costs will increase over the long-term.
Here are the changes:
• Recycling – the existing 18-gallon recycling container will be replaced with a green 96-gallon container with an embossed yellow lid, a handle and wheels. this is the same size as the current trash cart.
• Yardwaste – after February 1, 2012, plastic bags will no longer be accepted. Green waste can still be bundled or placed in resident-provided containers. If bags are used, they must be compostable bags, available at local stores.
Garbage service, using your current trash cart, remains the same. there will also be no changes to the bulky waste pick-up, extra trash tags, or the township’s recycling Center. If you are unfamiliar with the current services, please visit www. thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov. Click residents, then trash Collection, for details.
there is no additional cost to you. the service fee is included in your annual township tax bill. Many communities charge an additional service fee for garbage and recycling pickup, but the Woodlands does not.
the transition to the carts will begin in late 2011 and be completed by February 1, 2012. Information will be posted on the township Web site and published in the Woodlands Community Magazine in the months preceding the new service. exact schedules and routes are still under consideration.
all trash, refuse and recyclables (except bundled limbs and branches) must be placed in containers as noted above. all trash, refuse or recycling containers may be placed near the street edge no earlier than one day prior to waste collection. emptied containers must be removed from the street, front yard or driveway by the end of the collection day. Containers must be stored on the owner’s property at all times. Containers must be stored out of public view at ground level from the street or alley or adjacent and surrounding properties at all times except during waste collection.
If you do not want to store the carts in your garage, please call the Woodlands township Covenant administration Department at 281-210-3800 for suggestions on how best to store and screen the carts at your property. Options may include fencing, lattice or landscape screening using plants.
Yes! Place both wheeled carts at the curb or street-end of your driveway, with the opening side facing the street, and the wheels and handle facing the house. remember to keep at least four feet between the carts so that the automated arm of the trash and recycling truck can pick up each cart.
What do I need to do?
No changes right now. During the fall, watch for articles in the Woodlands Community Magazine, the township’s Web site, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, and local papers for updates and information. at some point in December 2011 or January 2012, you will receive the new recycling cart at your home, and then you may begin using the Woodlands township’s new and improved recycling service!

aperformingarts pavilion was always part of the plan for the Woodlands. It was on the menu of things that Dick Brown, one of the original consultants and later the head of planning at the Woodlands, thought was important. It was part of George Mitchell’s vision of the town and it was a passion of Cynthia Mitchell. But it took a long time to come to fruition. Following the early years of financial setbacks, the proper conditions for the pavilion’s realization finally appeared.
the actual genesis of the pavilion came with improvements to the former tournament Players Course golf course where the Houston Open was played. the Houston Golf association and the Professional Golfers association wanted the development company to build stadium seating on the golf course. We spent a lot of time on that project. We visited Ponte Vedra, Florida, to look at the sawgrass Course, which was the first stadium seating course built under the sponsorship of the PGa sawgrass included mounds around the greens and tee boxes, and along fairways to make golf more of a spectator sport. We constructed the same kind of stadium mounding around the greens on the Woodlands tPC. several weeks before the first tournament was scheduled to be played on that course, Dick Brown and I went to lunch at the tournament Players Clubhouse. We each bought a hot dog. It was a beautiful sunny day so we decided to eat our hot dogs on the mound at the 18th green, a perch from which we could envision how the tournament might look when it was played there in a few weeks.
I don’t remember who started the conversation, Dick or myself, but we decided if the golf green could be duplicated in another location, but with a concrete surface, and if the mound was slightly bigger and a tent mounted over the green, we could create a small community pavilion. Perhaps that would be the start of this music pavilion that George and Cynthia had envisioned for the Woodlands. the economy was turning around in Houston and the fortunes of the Woodlands were getting a little better. Business was increasing and revenue was growing, so we approached George
about the concept. He suggested we talk to Cynthia to see how she felt about it. We did, and she embraced it.
Dick had done some research on pavilions. He had already contacted an architect who had suggested a tefloncoated tent structure to cover the stage. We met with Pace entertainment, which was at the time the leader in booking outdoor entertainment events in the united states on the “shed circuit.” the first thing Pace pointed out to us was that construction of a facility for 1,500 people, which is what we had planned to build, was not commercially viable. to attract commercial
Pavilion openingartists whose performances might help pay for the symphony, opera and other non-profit cultural events, we needed seating for at least 10,000. Well, that was considerably more than we thought we would build. the smaller venue might cost maybe a million dollars. Cynthia immediately became the champion for the bigger pavilion. so we built it.
We established a 501(c)(3) corporation as “owners” of the pavilion, something we found that worked for the John Cooper school and would work here. We recruited knowledgeable people from the both the Woodlands and the greater Houston region to serve on the non-profit board.
Fill material excavated from the adjacent town Center waterway system was used to build the mounded seating. We did it during the second wettest season in the history of the Woodlands. the wettest season was when Plato Pappas, senior engineer for the development company, was trying to build Woodlands Parkway. the second one was when he was trying to compact 300,000 cubic yards of fill material to make the mounded seating for the pavilion. He did it. Construction was completed and the facility opened in april 1990. Instead of $1 million, the pavilion wound up costing $10 million, all paid by the Woodlands Corporation as a gift to the community. those were $10 million hot dogs Dick Brown and I had for lunch on the new 18th green.
In addition, George and Cynthia Mitchell personally donated $5 million to the Houston symphony to make the pavilion its summer home. they also gave money to the Houston Ballet and the Houston Grand Opera to help stage productions in the Woodlands in the summer.
the Houston symphony presented the first performance in the new pavilion on a Friday evening. a squall line arrived just about the time the symphony started playing. there were flashes of lightning and thunder and trees were blowing. the light in the trees made them vivid. It was just a wonderful experience for that opening night, if you were sitting
under the tent. For those on the lawn it was a drenching experience. the second night saw a Frank sinatra performance and the third night the group alabama played. since then, about 50 touring acts each year perform at the pavilion and the profits from their appearances help support cultural events like the symphony and ballet.
since its inception, the pavilion has twice been expanded and now seats 18,000. those are the kinds of things that were done in the Woodlands that went beyond what had to be done. It was done because George and Cynthia thought it was the right thing to do. Over a long period it could add to the profitability of the Woodlands Corporation and enhance the value of its properties. It’s a very long-term investment and other developers would likely have chosen a different approach, but it made the Woodlands a better place, an achievement that holds great value for the Mitchells and the community. In addition to its entertainment value, the pavilion has made the Woodlands a regional destination for special events and expanded our economic base.

entire state of texas is currently facing historic drought conditions, which is impacting the community’s natural resources. Our community’s forest, ponds and wildlife all are able to handle these environmental challenges through a variety of mechanisms. the Woodlands township Parks and recreation Department has prepared the following information to provide awareness of the impacts of the drought and how the township is reacting to these current challenges.trees
throughout the community many of the hardwood trees appear to be dead or dying, however these trees may be experiencing early dormancy or shedding individual branches to conserve their own resources - especially in the elm tree, texas red Oaks and Water Oak trees. Dormancy or shedding is a natural method in which trees protect themselves to ensure their survivability. Dormancy is marked with leaves turning brown and the tree appearing to be dead. If an oak tree has a limb which is accessible it can be scratched or the end the limb can be bent to see if it is pliable versus brittle. Oaks are a hearty species and can survive such drought events; however, not all will survive. the Woodlands township Parks and recreation Department is monitoring a number of the trees versus removing them in anticipation that many will return to their normal vibrancy in the spring of 2012. If the trees do not show signs of life next year, they may have to be removed.

like the trees, the community’s 45 ponds have also been impacted by the drought and high temperatures. It is estimated that ponds can lose approximately 1/4” of water per day through evaporation and transpiration. Ponds are being monitored weekly including the levels of dissolved oxygen, PH and temperature. some indicators of immediate stress are: fish are visible at the surface of the water early in the morning and returning to deeper water later in the day; when oxygen levels rise, water rapidly changes color, usually brown, black, or gray; or the pond suddenly has a putrid odor. additionally, depending on conditions, fountains may need to be turned off due to the low water levels.
Finally, just like humans, wildlife are looking for water; in doing so, wildlife will be more visible within the community. to avoid wildlife encounters do not make your area welcoming to them. Do not provide food, water, or shelter:
• repair dry rot, gaps in boards, holes, loose soffit vents and gables.
• remove tree branches overhanging the roof that provide walkways.
• stack firewood at least 18” off the ground and away from walls and fences.
• Clean up piles of brush that provide nesting areas.
• stop feeding pets or birds outside until activity stops.
• store pet food and bird seed in secure containers indoors.
• Keep garbage can lids closed and secured.
• repair leaking faucets that provide water.
