Township launches new e-newsletter and Facebook page

The Woodlands Township recently launched a weekly e-newsletter called Talk of the Township. The newsletter features several brief items of interest each week regarding The Woodlands Township, such as events, board meetings and timely tips and facts.

Give Crime and Drugs a Going-Away Party NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IN THE WOODLANDS, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2014

National Night Out represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination that helps make neighborhoods a safer place year-round.

The Woodlands Township invites everyone to join together with their neighbors and public safety officers for a night out against crime! National Night Out is an event celebrated annually in communities across the country to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood unity. On Tuesday, October 7, 2014, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., residents of The Woodlands are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening with their neighbors. Neighborhoods are safer places to live when residents get to know each other and establish relationships beyond the friendly wave. A National Night Out party is just the way to do this.

Take this opportunity to send a message to criminals that your neighborhood is united against crime! How you celebrate is up to you. It can be a simple event like a barbecue. Local law enforcement and The Woodlands Fire Department will briefly visit with many of the neighborhoods that register their parties with the Township.

Last year, The Woodlands had 210 parties, so early registration is important! It’s easy to register. Just visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov and click on National Night Out/Party Registration. You can also get party supplies at the Supply and Registration

Day on Thursday, September 25, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Woodlands Township, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Available supplies will include balloons, giveaways, yard signs, party ideas and more! Even if you want to keep it simple and don’t need supplies or a visit from law enforcement, you are still encouraged to register your party, as it is important for law enforcement groups to know how many neighborhoods participate in this community-building event.

MOSQUITOES

WHAT ABOUT THAT STREET SPRAYING?

WithWest Nile Virus present in the mosquitoes in our area again this year, many people are asking about street spraying for mosquitoes. For many years, street spraying throughout The Woodlands was a common sight. It was very expensive and as it turns out, not very effective. A study done by a Texas A&M graduate student in 2004 showed that in almost every case there were more mosquitoes in backyards the day after spraying than the day before spraying.

So why is street spraying not effective in The Woodlands? There are several reasons. Heavy vegetation and privacy fences keep the pesticide hanging in the street instead of drifting into backyards where most mosquitoes rest. In addition, for spraying to be effective, wind speeds have to be just right. Too high and the pesticide dissipates too quickly to provide a lethal dose; too low and the pesticide sits in the street and chases mosquitoes into backyards. We generally have very little wind here.

Just like overuse of antibiotics creates resistant bacteria, overuse of pesticide creates pesticide-resistant mosquitoes. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) and the Texas Mosquito Control Association (TMCA), “The safest most effective mosquito control targets mosquitoes before they fly! The reduction, elimination or treatment of mosquito breeding areas is the best and most cost-effective technique for mosquito control.”

The protocol, recommended by the TDSHSv, TMCA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), involves a step-by-step approach which employs:

1. Surveillance by sampling–trapping and testing for disease.

2. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites.

3. Biological control.

4. As a last resort, when disease is present, targeted pesticide application for adult mosquitoes.

5. Personal protective measures.

Remember these facts about West Nile Virus from TDSHS:

1. Very few mosquitoes actually carry West Nile Virus.

2. Human illness from West Nile virus is rare.

3. Less than one percent of those bitten by a mosquito will become severely ill.

4. The elderly and those with impaired immune systems are most susceptible.

5. 75 percent of human cases are in people who never wear mosquito repellent.

How can you enjoy the outdoors?

1. Work with your neighbors to eliminate breeding sites in your neighborhood.

2. Avoid being outside between dusk and dawn when disease-carrying mosquitoes are active.

3. Wear long, loose, light-colored clothing.

4. Use repellent.

5. An oscillating fan can be very effective at keeping mosquitoes away when you sit outside.

Neighborhood and community groups can request a presentation on how to work together to dramatically reduce mosquitoes; and residents can schedule trapping and surveillance by calling The Woodlands Township Environmental Services office at 281-210-3800.

• At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both.

• Flashlight and extra batteries.

• First aid kit.

• Whistle to signal for help.

• Filter mask or cotton T-shirt to help filter the air.

• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.

• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.

• Manual can opener and utensils if kit contains canned food.

• Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.

• Important family documents.

Connect with an isolated individual in your neighborhood or start a neighborhood organization.

Isolated individuals are more vulnerable during and after a disaster. They are less likely to ask for help or follow emergency instructions. The elderly or those with disabilities may have trouble getting out of the house, and may not have much contact with the outside world. Someone who doesn’t speak English well may have trouble understanding emergency instructions. People may also be isolated just because they are new to the area, or because their work hours keep them from meeting their neighbors.

Who are the isolated individuals in your neighborhood? Take time to meet them. Help them make a plan for emergencies, and include checking on them in your plan.

Promote emergency preparedness in your community.

Scout troops, service clubs, residential associations, communities of faith—almost any organization you belong to can become a partner in emergency preparedness. Organizations that promote emergency preparedness make their community more

The goal for August is to make your community stronger by getting trained and getting involved.

It takes more than police, firefighters and EMS to respond to a disaster. It takes people who are committed to their neighborhood, churches, schools and volunteer organizations. People who are involved are the key to a disaster-resilient community. They are willing and able to look out for themselves and others. Choose one of the following things to do this month to become better prepared:

• Include a Do One Thing preparedness topic in newsletters or on bulletin boards each month.

• Talk to your scout troop leader about how Do One Thing activities can be used toward a preparedness badge.

• Get a group together to make emergency kits for seniors or kids who stay home alone.

• Visit the www.do1thing.com website to see how other organizations are promoting preparedness in their communities.

The Red Cross, Ready.gov, and many other organizations also promote preparedness. Find the materials that will work best for your organization and become a partner in preparing your community!

Become a volunteer in your community (CERT, Red Cross, Neighborhood Watch, etc.).

There are many places to volunteer in your community. Many police and fire departments use volunteers to help with special projects, events or programs. The American Red Cross, Salvation

Army, and other organizations train volunteers to work in disasters. But don’t wait for disaster to strike—volunteer now. These organizations won’t send untrained volunteers into disaster areas.

Many communities also have a volunteer center or a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). These programs can find ways for you to help in your community that will fit your schedule and abilities.

If you are already a member of a volunteer organization, consider getting your volunteer group involved in VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). VOAD is a national program that helps volunteer groups work in their community during a disaster.

Garbage Collection

No changes in garbage service for August. There will be no pick-up on Labor Day (Monday, September 1, 2014). Neighborhoods that usually receive collection on Monday will have their service delayed by one day. All subsequent routes for the rest of the week will also be delayed by one day. Friday’s route will receive service on Saturday. All solid waste services are affected. Regular service will resume on Monday, September 8, 2014. Happy summer days to all of you from College Park! We hope you are all enjoying the pools at our parks and staying as cool as can be. Our thanks go out to our lifeguards who have dedicated many hours in the heat for us.

For the month of August, there are a few events happening that you, as residents, are encouraged to come out and be a part of. The first event is our Good Neighbor Day on August 2, 2014, and it will be promoted at our Woodlands Fire Station #6 on Windsor Lakes Blvd. in the Village of College Park. Peggy Krysiak is our village liaison, and she will be there with information to share with attending residents. It is a great way to meet your neighbors and share information.

The next event is fun and needs attendance to cheer on our Firefighters and Sheriff Department. This is the softball game at Scotland Yard field at McCullough Middle School on August 16 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This should be

a hoot, and they would love to see and hear all the support we can give!

After that, our students and faculty will be preparing for their first day back to school. Wow, how time flies! We hope you have all had a wonderful summer and have enjoyed your family and friends as much as possible.

In our College Park area, we are looking so futuristic with our flyover off and on of Highway 242 coming to the end of its completion. It has been challenging at times, with closures at different times, but it will be an enhancement to our area with traffic flow, especially with the new Costco coming to our area, which is greatly anticipated. Our Harper’s Landing residents will literally be around the corner from the new Costco.

Please refer to our College Park website to see what’s going on in your village. There is great information on the site to keep you informed on upcoming dates and events. If there are any surveys for our residents to complete, the website will have this information. We have had ongoing requests from residents regarding various issues that our College Park board has been discussing to present in the form of a survey.

In closing, there is always the request for our College Park residents to attend one of our monthly board meetings. We would love to meet you, listen to any of your concerns as a resident, and have you observe the issues that our board is committed to discussing and resolving on a monthly basis. Our meeting is always the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at The Woodlands Township Office.

Stay cool and safe, and make sure you have your emergency plan and supplies in place in case there is any threat of a hurricane. We have until the end of fall to keep on the lookout!

George Van Horn

Grogan’s Mill

The Grogan’s Mill Village Association held a ceremony on June 16, 2014, to dedicate a memorial bench and plaque in honor of George Van Horn, who passed away in December of 2013. The dedication was attended by members of the Board and neighbors of the Van Horns. George served on the Grogan’s Mill Village Association Board for several years and was the President at the time of his death. The bench and plaque are located in the cul-de- sac in Mr. Van Horn’s East Timberwagon Circle neighborhood. Dana Denton, President, Grogan’s Mill Village Association Board of Directors, noted that one of George’s last association projects was encouragement of the

revitalization of neighborhood cul-de-sacs. The Grogan’s Mill Village Association is proud and pleased to dedicate this bench and plaque as a permanent memorial in George’s honor.

The Yard of the Month winners for July are Mike and G.G. Krall, who moved to the Woodlands in 2000. Hoping for a home that reminded them of their Southern Louisiana heritage, the Kralls found just what they wanted. With crepe myrtles, azaleas, and a big oak tree, the yard has the distinctive Southern flavor the Kralls were seeking. Color comes from snapdragons, begonias, and dianthus. The gardenias and day lilies are also Southern bloomers.

In keeping with our campaign to rid our community of unnecessary plastic bags, the Grogan’s Mill Farmers’ Market has provided signs for the Randall’s parking lot at the Grogan’s Mill Village Center reminding shoppers to bring their own bags so that we can all “Recycle, Reuse, Reduce.” Whether shopping at Randall’s, at the weekly Grogan’s Mill Farmers’ Market, or visiting any other retailer, keep those bags handy. And don’t forget to drop off your plastic caps as well as synthetic and real wine corks at the Farmers’

Panther Creek

A flag-waving thank-you is due to the many volunteers, veterans and Boy Scouts who made our annual Flag Day Picnic another great success. The turnout at Ridgewood Park was wonderful. Hosts and guests had an old-fashioned summer get-together. Special thanks go to Mrs. Peggy Hausman who has coordinated and seen to every detail of this event for years. She will be passing on those duties for next year.

The picnic included flag displays and demonstrations, and we had sculpted balloons and snow cones that kept children of all ages delighted and refreshed. Masterfully grilled hot dogs and hamburgers were served with fresh fixin’s and many other treats. The free pool day at Ridgewood Park also featured free beach balls and floaty ducks for the kids. Additional thanks go to the many area businesses who helped publicize the day. Put the Saturday closest to Flag Day on your calendar for next year’s Panther Creek old-style neighborhood picnic.

As you head off to whichever vacation spots you choose this summer, don’t forget to protect your home by notifying the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department to keep an extra eye on your property while you are gone. The program is free while you travel from two to 30 days at a time.

You are also invited to attend our monthly board meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Woodlands Township Town Hall, just off New Trails Drive. There you can make comments, seek advice on problem resolution, and hear reports on community-oriented policing, doings at The Woodlands Township meetings, and other upcoming neighborhood and community events.

It’s not too soon to start planning your own neighborhood National Night Out Party on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Gorilla Hole is a special event at The Woodlands Township Recreation Center held the first and third Friday of each month. Gorilla Hole gives fifth- and sixth-graders the opportunity to hang out with their friends and enjoy fun activities.

Did you know Gorilla Hole has been around for 20 years? Gorilla Hole is a signature program of the Parks and Recreation Department and one of the only original programs of The Woodlands Township Recreation Center, which originated as a teen center in the 1980s.

Did you know that Gorilla Hole is monitored by two off-duty Montgomery County Sheriff Deputies? Safety and

parent security is a key feature of the Gorilla Hole program. The officers monitor the entrance/exit to the facility.

The Woodlands Township staff is trained to provide the ultimate experience, providing kids a chance to let loose and dance, participate in a dodge ball tournament, play games and just kick back and relax with friends. The Township provides fun activities, positive role models and experienced staff.

Keep Recycling Working –Keep it Clean!

The Woodlands Township recycles!

From village to village and street to street, residents are committed to recycling as much as possible. Sometimes the exuberance to recycle causes an unintended problem at the sorting facility—contamination.

During a recent recycling audit of a single neighborhood, 27 percent of the material collected curbside was rejected at the sorting facility due to contamination. The major culprits were

food debris, liquids and plastic bags.

To keep recycling working, cans, bottles and containers must be rinsed well or wiped clean. Food stained paper, such as pizza boxes and paper towels, are not recyclable. Also, plastic bags cause downtime at the sorting facility, as they catch in the conveyor belts and bind the machinery, damaging equipment.

Recycling is an economic venture, sustainable only if materials can be quickly and efficiently sorted and processed. Clean plastic, metal, glass and paper products are highly marketable. Please keep recycling working by placing only clean recyclables in the curbside cart and keep plastic bags out. THE NATURAL HARMONY OF ROADSIDE Grasses and Wildflowers

The Woodlands Township, in partnership with The Woodlands Development Company through a streetscape contract, currently with Brickman Group, maintains several hundred miles of road rights of way in addition to more than 400 village and neighborhood entries. Additionally, the Township maintains 126 parks, 200 miles of pathways and 350 “jumbo” size cul-de-sac islands. These areas are maintained on various schedules depending upon the adopted frequency standards.

A common goal of the standards is to keep The Woodlands in harmony with nature. The smaller cul-de-sac islands are not maintained by the Township

except as needed for hazard tree removal in conjunction with the counties.

A comment occasionally received from residents is, “Why do the roadsides look as though they haven’t been mowed in months and look shaggy and unkempt? ” That shaggy or unkempt area is often a result of Bahia (bah- HEE- yah) grass, which is easily identified by its prominent V-shaped blade along with a stem or seed head that can reach up to 30 inches tall.

At certain times of the year when weather conditions bring high temperatures, rain, humidity and long growing days, Bahia can grow more than a foot in less than a week. While this grass may appear to be unattractive in certain locations, there are benefits to the grass which include its value in assisting with limiting soil erosion, low water and fertilizer requirements and providing cover for wildflowers. The goal with the maintenance program for the parks, roadsides and cul-de-sac islands is to be in harmony with nature;

therefore maintenance standards and schedules were developed around this philosophy.

For example, neighborhood entries will have improved landscapes with manicured groundcovers and irrigated grass that are maintained every 10 days, along with native shrubs and some natural strips of forest, while the roadsides will be left as much as possible to the natural progression of Mother Nature, with some help of wildflower planting and mowed approximately 18 times per year beginning after the wildflower season. It can be a challenge to deal with Bahia grass as it sends up seed heads very quickly, and as it is a perennial grass, removal of it is difficult due to its root structure.

The best approach to manage Bahia grass is by ensuring that these areas are routinely mowed and maintained, as opposed to being aggressive with herbicides system-wide. In that way, the grass and its maintenance remain in harmony with nature.

Although summer is still with us, you can jump start your fall vegetable gardening by learning about bed preparation, soil amendment, variety selection, seed sowing and planting schedules, also, organic companion planting and cover cropping. From broccoli, beets and carrots to onions and chard, learn the best varieties to plant and how to care for the fall and winter garden. Learn how to build a bed and prepare soil to ensure a bountiful harvest of cool-season veggies. Learning the Basics of Water-Wise Landscaping

Water-wise gardening simply means using good common sense. It reduces irrigation needs, lowers water bills, lowers maintenance and provides a much higher quality and worry-free landscape. Here are some general guidelines for establishing a water-wise garden:

Planning and Design

Take some time to look at your yard. You may even want to make a drawing of it. What would you like to change?

Less lawn and more ornamental beds? More native plants?

Analyze and Amend Soil

Without good fertile soil, you cannot have an attractive, water-wise landscape. Texas A&M Soil Science Laboratory in College Station will test your soil for a small fee. Contact the local Texas Agrilife

Extension Service in Conroe (936-539-7824) to find out how to do this. Then, simply follow the instructions on the subsequent report and amend your soil accordingly.

Efficient Irrigation

Use the cycle-and-soak method to irrigate your landscape. If you have ornamental beds, install drip irrigation in them. It saves an amazing amount of water, creates little or no evaporation, and the water goes directly to the roots of the plants.

Appropriate Plant Selection

Use native and adapted plants which do well in our area whenever you can. The Woodlands Township’s Environmental Services Department has produced a large number of brochures on plants. Take advantage of this valuable service.

Mulch

Mulch keeps plant roots cool, prevents soil from crusting, minimizes evaporation and reduces weed growth. Apply two to four inches deep on ornamentals and trees.

Practical Lawn Areas

Many homeowners are realizing that they don’t need large expanses of turf grass, and are decreasing the sizes of their grassy lawns. Some have switched over to grasses with lower water needs (such as zoysia).

Proper Maintenance

Have your irrigation system checked by The Woodlands Water Irrigation System Evaluation team, a free service offered by WJPA. Register for a free inspection at www.wjpa.org.

A haunted house in a neighborhood haunted by a dark secret! Created just for this event, join the tour and discover the secret of The Neighborhood of Nightmares!

The Haunting at Bear Branch Park is built to specific themes by Township staff. The event staff includes volunteers from groups including National Charity Roundtable (NCR), NCL Magnolias, Texas Laurels and multiple high school club chapters.
