Star-Spangled Salute

the holiday festivities begin on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, with the Houston symphony’s star-spangled salute, conducted by Michael Krajewski. the concert features a selection of patriotic favorites, american classics, sing-alongs and, of course, tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with cannons from atop the hill. the Woodlands Development Company has proudly sponsored the star-spangled salute concert since 1990. the concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and admission is Free Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Lovable mascot of the Woodlands, Puffy Pine Cone, will make a special appearance in the North Plaza from 7 to 8 p.m.

Fourth of July Parade

the Fourth of July parade will begin at 9 a.m. in the Woodlands town Center. Join the thousands of spectators along the 1.3-mile parade route that begins and ends at the Woodlands united Methodist Church. Bring lawn chairs and get a spot early to enjoy the pre-parade entertainment of jugglers, clowns, magicians and much more! the theme for the 2012 parade is “sweet Land of Liberty.” a tent in front of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion will provide relief from the summer heat for senior citizens and the physically challenged. roads will be closed during the parade. Public parking is available throughout the town Center area; parade parking will not be allowed in either the Woodlands united Methodist Church or H-e-B Woodlands Market parking lots. Family members of all ages will enjoy the fire engines, clowns, horses and many exciting commercial floats. the parade will again proudly feature marching bands in conjunction with the south County Fourth of July Committee 7th annual Marching Band Scholarship Program. There will be seven marching bands this year! sheriff tommy Gage will be the parade’s grand marshal! Judging will occur on the parade route just above the North Passage in Market street.

“an important piece of any emergency plan is working together and utilizing all of your resources,” says township Law enforcement Director Marian Leck. “Don’t wait to get to know your neighbor!”

Knowing the host plants and habitats that specific butterflies prefer is helpful in their identification. John and Gloria tveten, authors of Butterflies of Houston, have observed that rattlebox is a primary food source for the larvae of funereal duskywing. see the new U.s. Geological survey Web site at www.butterfliesandmoths.org for images.

It might be easy to dismiss the lowly rattlebox (Sesbania drummondii) as nothing more than a rangy roadside curiosity. But this shrubby, short-lived, woody perennial performs numerous feats in its roadside ditch habitat!

each spring, rattlebox rebounds as much as 10 feet from its woody base. Meanwhile, beneath the ground, the roots of this legume are partners with bacteria that capture nitrogen from the atmosphere.

Furthermore, studies have shown the plant has potential for the hyperaccumulation of lead and that its seeds may even contain a cancer inhibitor. Last but not least, rattlebox satisfies the larval palates of as many as three local butterflies.

rattlebox supports the life cycle of the funereal duskywing, orange sulphur and gray hairstreak butterflies. While adult butterflies typically seek nectar from a variety of sources, their larvae are more finicky requiring females to lay their developing eggs on very specific hosts. the larvae consume the compound leaves, flowers or fruit as they grow and metamorphose into adult butterflies.

as nectar feeding adults, butterflies

become inadvertent pollinators, blithely transferring pollen from flower to flower in their search for food. two-thirds of all flowering plants, including many of our food crops, depend upon insects—among them butterflies, bees and flies—for pollination in order to set seed and fruit. “an estimated one out of every three bites of food we eat comes from a pollinator.” (http://pollinator.org/)

according to the u s. Department of agriculture, we are facing an “impending pollination crisis.” today, wild pollinators are threatened by habitat loss, pesticide use and disease, just when we are beginning to grasp the economic value of pollinators in the ecosystem. the rattlebox-butterfly interdependence reminds us that each plant and animal, no matter how seemingly insignificant, play a role in the web of life. National Pollinator Week 2012, June 18-24, provides an opportunity to further explore the importance of pollinators.

By preserving greenbelts, creating backyard habitats, monitoring invasive plants and minimizing pesticide spraying, we can each do our part to prevent the fragile web from unraveling.

after many postings here over the years, Bill Mara is taking some time off from this duty. However, we will still keep in touch with Cochran’s Crossing residents through The Woodlands Community Magazine. Here are a few items, past and future, you will find of interest.

• Improved communication with Cochran’s Crossing residents is one of the board’s goals. to assist in this effort, Vice President Brian Creighton is heading up a committee including Mark Gjovik, tricia stapleton and susan tinsley to gather ideas on improvements that can be made in Cochran’s Crossing. among the topics discussed were safety and noise issues.

• We have been told by Lynne aldrich, township environmental services manager, that Cochran’s Crossing Village association has received $500 for participating in the Caps and Corks collection effort and $1,000 for winning the competition that concluded last November. Cindy Kessinger and Mark Gjovik were great leaders of this project. Now we are into another year so keep on collecting the caps and corks.

Bill is the owner of Bilko tile and Granite and has lived in the same house for 12 years. Bill also grew up in the Woodlands, attending Lamar, Wilkerson, Knox and McCullough schools. after a hard day’s work of home remodeling (and another hour at the gym!), Bill loves to putter in the yard and takes pride in exercising his “green thumb.” as a self-confessed neatnik, Bill likes to set a neighborhood example with his well-maintained yard. the yard is planted with “stuff that works” in Houston’s hot and sometimes dry climate, such as lantanas, which seem to thrive with relatively little care.

Fourth of July parade under the direction of Indian springs Village association Board Member richard stromatt, preparations are underway to design a float to participate in the Woodlands’ Fourth of July Parade. the 2012 parade theme is “sweet Land of Liberty.” richard and his team of volunteers have created several award-winning floats over

the past several years. Come on out to the parade on the morning of July 4 to celebrate america’s birthday with some patriotic fun!

there are a couple of summer events coming soon for the enjoyment of all Panther Creek residents. First will be the Panther Creek Village association’s annual Flag Day picnic and swim. On June 16, at ridgewood Park on Interfaith Drive, there will be free hamburgers, hot dogs and much more for all the residents of Panther Creek. the pool will be open and free for everyone. If you are not a swimmer, be sure to drop by for the food. Food will be served around 11 a.m. Veterans from a local VFW will be there to explain etiquette regarding our national flag. the picnic is always well-attended and is fun for adults and kids alike. We hope to see everyone there.

On august 11, the Panther Creek Village association will sponsor its annual baseball outing. this year the astros will play the Milwaukee Brewers. tickets will be $12 each (a much discounted price due to the tough negotiations of Mary Bootz).

If you love baseball but hate the traffic, looking for a parking spot and the traffic jam after the game, here is an opportunity to avoid all those aggravations and be delivered directly to the main entrance of the stadium by a chartered bus. at no additional charge, a chartered bus will pick up everyone at the Panther Creek shopping Center, deliver them to entrance of the stadium, and be waiting after the game outside the stadium for a relaxing return to the Woodlands.

If you are interested in buying tickets, please contact Mary Bootz at 281-296-9960. summer time is mosquito time and the township is working to eradicate as many as possible. some mosquitoes carry diseases, and residents need to do their part to diminish the number of breeding areas available to the mosquitoes, including standing water created by overwatering the grass. Please be mindful when watering. another fact recently told to the Panther Creek Village association by a representative from the township is that 75 percent of those people who suffered

from a disease carried by mosquitoes were not wearing mosquito repellant. Be sure to use repellant when out in the yard, especially children. Better safe than sorry.

cheerleading rewards – In last month’s issue, we offered our readers a brief preview of the Woodlands Marathon Village Cheer challenge event where members of our sterling ridge community suited up in superhero outfits to lead the cheering in support of the marathon’s participants. In return for these efforts, our sterling ridge Village association received an economic reward for participating and a bonus check for taking first place in the challenge! thanks again to all participants and volunteers.

GreenUp event – sterling ridge once again made its mark in support of the Woodlands township’s second annual Greenup event. agroup of 15 Woodlands firefighters recently participated in the american Lung association’s Fight for air Climb that was held at the First City tower in downtown Houston. the firefighters raised close to $3,000 for the event, more than double what they raised last year! the Woodlands Fire Department placed first in the firefighter division of the competition, which involved climbing 48 floors in full personal protective equipment.

Out of approximately 75 firefighters participating in the event, the Woodlands firefighters individually placed in six of the top eight spots, including Paul taylor who placed first, Jake Zacharias (second), travis Nicholson (third), Bryce Whetzel (fourth), Gary rodgers (sixth) and Cameron Price (eighth).
