The Woodlands Township is pleased to launch TheWoodlands311 for residents to access their government. With this new tool, residents can take a picture, submit, track and view service requests on their smartphone or desktop computer. Residents can also use the in-app widgets to find important information about Township services, events, public facilities and more.

Service requests, such as reporting broken streetlights, are easily submitted by completing a short description of the issue. Attach a photo or let your phone record the exact location to help pinpoint the problem. Requests will be routed to the appropriate department for proper handling. Residents will be able to track the progress of their requests on the Township website and through the mobile application.

The application supports 17 languages through its One Voice Translation feature. When a resident submits a request in their native language, it is automatically translated into English for Township officials. Subsequent updates on the request are automatically translated back into the resident’s native language to enable a seamless dialogue between the government and residents.

With record-breaking temperatures and added humidity, it can be difficult to actually enjoy being outside. However, it’s always cool at the pool! The Woodlands Township features 14 pools located throughout The Woodlands that can be enjoyed all summer long. Go tubing around the lazy river at Rob Fleming Aquatic Center, hop across the lily pads at Wendtwoods pool, or even test your skill on the climbing wall at Sawmill pool. There are so many great amenities to choose from at each of these unique pools.

Anyone can go to the pools and pay the daily entry fees, or even get a punch card that will get you in up to six times. However, if you love the pools as much as we do, and are looking to save some money, the best option is to purchase a season pass to the pools! Season passes offer unlimited entries to all 14 pools, including the everpopular Rob Fleming Aquatic Center. So stay cool this coming summer and get more splash with a season pass!

Season passes are available for purchase or renewal now! Get your season passes early and avoid waiting in line at the pools later on. Purchasing or renewing your pool pass is easy, and can be done in one of three ways:

National Travel and Tourism

Week, now in its 33rd year, is the annual salute to travel in America.

The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) along with the nation, celebrates a week of travel advocacy May 1-7, 2016. Communities nationwide will unite to showcase the impact of travel to policymakers, business leaders and local media with rallies, events and other advocacy activities. Travel is a job creator, economic engine, educator and pro-health. Travel is a primary industry that works for The Woodlands.

In The Woodlands, travel and tourism has a significant impact on economic growth and development.

The Woodlands CVB assists the 14 hotels within The Woodlands Township boundaries to drive occupancy by marketing to leisure, convention and corporate travelers. Local hotels specifically depend on group business to drive demand and keep occupancy consistent throughout the year.

Visitors to The Woodlands also create new revenue for local businesses and bolster sales tax and hotel occupancy tax for The Woodlands Township’s budget, which is then invested back

into improving the community’s infrastructure and resident programs.

According to a study by The Perryman Corporation, tourism is a $2 billion business in Montgomery County with 80 percent of that taking place in The Woodlands. In 2016, The Woodlands Township projects $52.5 million in sales tax and $9.6 million in hotel tax driven predominately by tourism.

Since 2015, hotel room inventory in The Woodlands has increased by over 29 percent, making it imperative for The Woodlands CVB to focus efforts on soliciting and attracting new leisure and group business in order to sustain current tax revenues. These revenues allow for a lower property tax for residents of The Woodlands.

New in 2016, The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau has shifted away from the production of community festivals and events to a newly defined focus, which will realign the organization with the traditional goals of a Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Technology plays a major role in this new plan as the CVB has set aside budget dollars for a concierge-style mobile app to elevate the experience of

a visitor while in the destination, which will in turn encourage repeat visitation. In addition to the app, the budget also allows the CVB to make its website more visitor friendly with features like an itinerary builder and an interactive visitors’ guide.

A new convention incentive program has been launched for 2016 to help drive corporate business to The Woodlands market. Using the program’s funds, the CVB will offer added benefits and services to organizations and meeting planners who book their conventions in The Woodlands.

While The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau markets and sells to visitors outside of the Township, the organization strives to keep the best interests of The Woodlands community in mind. The increase of sales and hotel occupancy tax revenues generated by the efforts of the CVB assists in making The Woodlands community a great place to live.

May greetings from Alden Bridge! We would like to thank the volunteers who helped out at The Woodlands Village Associations’ Flea Market a couple of weeks ago and all who submitted applications for our scholarships.

Our monthly residents meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, 7 p.m. at The Woodlands Township Town Hall, located at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Please join us for a pre-meeting reception to honor the winners of our 2016 scholarships. We had so many outstanding applications this year, which made it extremely difficult to select our winners.

Recently, we awarded the first Yard of the Month in Alden Bridge for this year. A winner will be chosen every month through September from those who have been nominated. College Park

Returning College Park board members welcomed two newly elected representatives, Jake Miller and Kenneth Morris, at the March meeting. Returning Board Member Dave Mulberry was named vice president. Other re-elected board members include Larry Faith, Cherish Cahoon, Joel Barnes, Johanne Stanley, Steve Lamotta and Mike Larson. Ted Stanley serves as president and Marti Meerscheidt serves as secretary for the College Park Village Association. Both of them are entering the second year of twoyear terms on the board.

This month the College Park board hosts our annual Spring Fling which has been renamed Poolooza! Poolooza is on the afternoon of May 21, 2016, at the Harper’s Landing Park and Pool. Admission to the pool is free. Come out for a good time with your family to include activities, food, swimming and fun for all ages.

In July, we will once again host a viewing tent for the 4th of July parade for our neighbors from College Park. If you live in the villages of Windsor Hills, Grogan’s Forest or Harper’s Landing, please join us for the parade viewing at the southeast corner of Lake Woodlands and Grogan’s Mill.

Hello to all Creekside Park Village residents! School is almost out, and

summer is on its way. A special thanks to Lone Star College, one of the newest members in our community, for opening their doors for early voting back in February and March. Creekside Park and the surrounding areas were able to make a difference and have their voice heard in a presidential electoral year at a convenient location with very little wait. If you plan to vote in the November elections, please remember to consider the early voting process to have your vote count.

Many of The Woodlands Township pools start opening in May. May 7, 2016, is the beginning of pre-season weekend use of two Creekside Park pools, Rob Fleming Aquatic Center and Wendtwoods Pool. The Creekside Park’s annual community pool party and picnic will be held at Wendtwoods Pool on June 11, 2016, so save the date! Fun activities and food will be offered to all who attend, and no pass needed for this great event, just your swimsuits and towels.

Grogan’s Mill

In the February Grogan’s Mill Village Association Board Elections, all incumbent directors were re-elected. At the regularly scheduled March 21, 2016, meeting, the following officers were elected: President Marie Brannen,

There are four MUDs (municipal utility districts) in Grogan’s Mill (1, 6, 36 and 48) with contested races for director positions in the May elections, with the exception of MUD 6. Reducing the cost of MUD operations is the primary issue. Many candidates support consolidating MUDs that have no debt and similar tax rates. MUD 1, formed by the consolidation of MUD 2 and 40, appears to be an early success and model for future consolidations, such as MUD 6 and 36. This consolidated MUD could then later join with MUD 1. If these three MUDs were to eventually consolidate, it could produce cash and time savings exceeding $250,000 per year.

At the annual village association planning meeting in March, a budget for the April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017, fiscal year was adopted. Highlights include: budgeting four $1,000 scholarships for deserving Grogan’s Mill students (application requirements and forms can be downloaded from the village association website at www.grogansmillvillage.com); $4,000 toward endowments for the four Grogan’s Mill schools; $2,500 for Interfaith programs; $300 for Yard of the Month winners; $1,800 for holiday lighting and decorations at the entries to Grogan’s Mill; $1,500 for a community party in August; $1,000 for expansion of a school gardening tower project; $500 for National Night Out, and $500 to help sponsor an Aging in Place program in The Woodlands. Some of these programs are funded through a grant from the Township and the remaining is earned through income from The Woodlands Farmer’s Market.

Indian Springs

The Indian Springs Village Association is pleased to once again support our local schools. Funds raised at village events, such as the Taste of the Village, are put back into our community through scholarships to our Indian Springs high school seniors and donations to our neighborhood schools.

A $500 donation was made to Galatas Elementary School for the purchase of consumable materials for the Sci://Tech Exhibit and props for our Destination Imagination (DI) teams. Galatas Principal Denae Wilker writes, “The Sci://Tech Exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for our third and fourth grade students to share their love of science with other students in Montgomery County.” Galatas DI teams also showcased their problem-solving skills at a regional tournament this spring.

An additional $500 donation was made to Glen Loch Elementary. Indian Springs Village Association is proud to once again support the Accelerated Reading program at Glen Loch.

Make Your Recycling Count

Changing markets and the economics of recycling is making national news. The Woodlands Township is committed to keeping recycling economically feasible for residents. Plastic bottles and containers, metal cans and paper are products that are graded and valued for quality. Clean and dry recyclables are worth more.

Don’t trash your recycling! Do NOT bag recycling items. They should be loose in the cart. Follow these other simple rules to make your curbside recycling count:

• Curbside, strive to recycle the top five types of recyclable items:

– Bottles, jars and jugs

– Beverage and food cans

– Food boxes, juice and soup cartons

– Clean paper and junk mail

– Cardboard

• Rinse containers, jars and bottles

• NO wet or food-stained paper or cardboard

• NO plastic bags or film

• NO Styrofoam

Packaging for sodas, energy drinks, sparkling waters and craft beers, and aluminum cans are a valuable commodity and infinitely recyclable.

Keep plastic bags out of the curbside recycling cart! Plastic bags and film get caught in sorting machinery, bringing the entire materials recovery facility to a halt. Instead, recycle bags at grocery stores and other retail outlets.

How to Read Your

Water

Water Meter

meters are probably the most misunderstood pieces of equipment in The Woodlands.

Learninghow to read your water meter can become a useful tool in managing your water usage and help you keep more money in your pocket. The meter measures how much water is delivered to properties and can help residents discover leaks and other water use.

How to find a meter

Meter boxes are located on the front property line. One meter box between two homes can share two meters, or separate meter boxes may be placed side by side.

Checking the meter

Since meter boxes are set into the ground, silt may have accumulated around the meter itself. There may also be debris, like leaves, inside the box. You will probably need a long screwdriver (to pop the lid cover off) and a wet rag (to clean the meter dial). Be careful of critters that may have taken up lodging inside the meter box. The water meter is the big bronze object in the middle of the box. It may have a black hinged cover.

Flip open the cover. Find the large red sweep hand. This tells the number

of gallons of water running through the meter. When the sweep hand hits “1,” one gallon has run through the meter. When the sweep hand makes one full circle, 10 gallons have passed through the meter. This is only for 5/8-inch meters. Larger meters are different.

A small red triangle sits to the left of the sweep hand. If the triangle is moving, but the sweep hand is still, a small bit of water is still flowing into the property. That could mean a leak is somewhere.

There is also an odometer-like display on the meter. The fixed number on the meter is a “0.” This is a place holder. The number describes the total amount of water used since the meter was installed. For instance, if the meter reads “159325” (remember to add the zero at the end), then 1,593,250 gallons have flowed through the meter.

Meter flow check

Next, turn off everything that uses water in the home. This includes faucets, dishwashers, water treatment systems and irrigation sprinklers. Double-check

outdoor spigots and shower heads. Check under kitchen and bathroom sinks for leaks. Do not use any water during this check.

Record the number on the meter. Wait 20 minutes. Record the numbers again. Subtract the first number from the second. If you get a zero, you’re in great shape. However, if you get a zero and the small red triangle is still moving, you are using a small amount of water somewhere on the property. It could be a leaking faucet or a running toilet. It could be a leak somewhere else that is not obvious. Remember, even the smallest amount of water use, say from a dripping faucet, can use up to 5,000 gallons a month.

Sometimes, the meter box may be filled with water. To solve this problem and make an accurate reading, meter readers use a long tube of clear plastic with a clear plastic bottom. They put the scope right against the meter face. Homeowners can use the same technique to read their own meter. Simply take a clear tumbler and place the bottom on the meter. Look through the mouth of the tumbler. This will allow you to see the meter face clearly.

Who is responsible?

Homeowners are responsible for maintaining their systems from the water meter to the house, and of course, inside the house.

A vital resource

Safe drinking water is a vital resource, with finite availability. The Woodlands is being used by the rest of the state as an example of water conservation, and for the most part, residents of The Woodlands have been proactive in supporting water conservation efforts.

Talk to your employer about emergency plans for the building where you work.

Think about other places that you and family members regularly spend time, like your child’s school. Talk to administrators at those places about their emergency plans as well.

Give emergency kits to people who count on you, like college students, elderly parents, etc.

Put together basic emergency kits for people who may not be able to do so for themselves or for those who may not think of doing it for themselves. Show them what is in the kit and talk to them about disasters. Make sure the kit meets their

specific needs. For instance, if someone takes prescription medicine, include a list of medications and dosages. For a college student, make sure the kit is small enough to store in the space they have available.

Talk

to your college student about how you will stay in touch if a disaster occurs.

Make sure they understand that cell phones may not work during a disaster. Choose an emergency contact who does not live near you or the college. Arrange for your student to call that person if they can’t reach you during a disaster.

Visit the website for your student’s college to find out about the school’s disaster plans and procedures. Some colleges will provide a phone number

that you can call in an emergency. If you don’t find the number on the website, call the admissions office and ask. Add the number to your emergency contact list. Also check with your health insurance carrier to find out where your student can find covered healthcare at school.

Know how others in your community will respond in a disaster.

Talk to other people when you are developing an emergency plan for a school, workplace or organization. Find out if your community has designated evacuation routes for floods, hurricanes or other disasters. Include that information in your plans. Make sure that the plans you develop will work for everyone.

FROGFRUIT Makes a Princely Ground Cover

For people who do not like high-maintenance lawns, frogfruit (Phyla incisa) is a great substitute with the added bonus of flowers and butterflies.

Theorigin of the name frogfruit is a mystery. Some call members of the genus frogfruit because they can be found in damp, sandy soils along riverbanks and lakeshores – exactly where fog and frogs are found.

Native frogfruit grows throughout the local area in open fields, on roadsides and along bayou banks. It will be unnoticed by the casual observer because of its diminutive size, but butterflies will alert you to its presence. Butterflies – White Peacock, Buckeye and Phaon Crescentspot – use frogfruit as a larval source, laying their eggs on the leaves. Many more butterflies sip nectar from the flowers, making the versatile plant a must for butterfly gardens. Frogfruit creates an excellent groundcover in sun to part shade. It is not particular about soil type and is drought tolerant. For best

appearance, frogfruit appreciates moist well-drained sites, although it will tolerate poor drainage. Nearly always evergreen in our area, frogfruit forms a thick mat and can take foot traffic and infrequent mowing. It does seem to resent mowing when in bloom. If placed in too much shade, growth will be less vigorous and flowering reduced.

The flower clusters are small (1/2 inch) and easily dwarfed by the butterflies and bees that visit them. The stems root where the nodes touch the ground, making frogfruit easy to divide and share with a friend. Propagation is also done by seed and cuttings. Be careful where you plant frogfruit if you are a gardener who likes plants to stay put; but if you need a tough little plant to cover an area or have a spot where it can be contained, frogfruit is an excellent choice for your garden.

Winning the Battle Against Mosquitoes

Arm yourself, mosquito season is upon us! And our most effective tactic for combatting mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding sites. All mosquitoes need is standing water for egg-laying and for their larvae to live and grow.

Once mosquitoes emerge as adults, airborne chemical spraying provides only limited effectiveness.

Fortunately, not all standing water in nature is a concern. Water bodies that perpetuate over time from small ponds to large lakes host aquatic invertebrates, tadpoles and fish. These predators do a great job of removing mosquito larvae before they can develop into flying, biting insects.

Our concern instead lies with features that hold water intermittently, at least a week at a time, but not long enough to host mosquito predators. In addition to any standing water in your yard, look for poorly-drained ditches, culverts and depressions, including tire ruts and swales. These areas can be breeding sites. If you notice these, please contact the managing authority for that area with the information below. They have crews that can address the underlying problem and prevent water from collecting.

For the short term, you can treat the site with a Mosquito Dunk®, an inexpensive and easy-to-apply larvacide that is nontoxic to humans and animals, including fish. Mosquito Dunk® is available at local hardware stores. And remember, The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department is always a resource for questions or concerns regarding mosquitoes, and can be contacted at 281-210-3800.

walkers know their route well and can quickly determine if something is out of place. Dog Walker Watch trains walkers to recognize suspicious activity and how to report it. Dog walkers serve as extra “eyes and ears” for law enforcement and learn how to report suspicious activity. STAFF RATIOS Counselor to camper ratio of 1:12.

STAFF TRAINING Camp counselors are thoroughly screened and trained. All staffers complete 40 hours of camp training, pass a background check and a drug screen. Training includes First Aid and Safety, CPR certification, Pool Safety, Swim Testing, How to Handle Bullying, camp games and more.

LOCATIONS Campers have daily activities at both The Woodlands Township Recreation Center and Bear Branch Park. Campers also go on a variety of fun weekly field trips.

REFUNDS Refunds for Sunny Dayz Camp may be requested at the front desk. Refund requests must be submitted no later than the Thursday prior to the camper's registered week. Enrollment dates are not allowed to roll over from week to week. Transfer of attendance dates within the week for three-day or one-day campers are allowed if space permits.

Instructors are from the Bayou City Fencing Academy and include Delfina Perka, a member of the 1980 Polish Olympic Team, and Albert Peters, former head coach of fencing at Cornell University. LEGO ® ENGINEERING I

Building Brains uses LEGO and K’NEX educational kits to build math and science skills. Students will build simple machines that really work, using gears, levers and pulleys, while building fine motor skills, sequential thinking skills, problem solving skills and confidence. LEGO ® ENGINNERING II

GROUP SWIM LESSON DESCRIPTIONS AND LEVEL GOALS

Each class is a pre-requisite for the next higher level exceptions may only be permitted by swim coach.

Swim with Me

6 months to 2 ½ years old

Infants, toddlers and adults that accompany them play games, sing songs and learn basic water skills. Children learn to become comfortable and enjoy the water while learning basic safety and water skills including entering and exiting the pool, blowing bubbles, submersion, floating (both back and front) and changing body position in the water.

Toddler Transitions

2 to 3 ½ years old

Entering and exiting the water using steps and side, bobbing, blowing bubbles, retrieving submerged objects, submerging entire body, front and back float with support, front glide with support, recovering to a vertical position and freestyle with support. Parents participate in the water for the first week of the session to help their child gain confidence in the water. By the end of the program, children should be swimming on their own.

Preschool

2 ½ to 5 years old

Entering and exiting the water using steps and side, bobbing, blowing bubbles, retrieving submerged objects, submerging entire body, front and back float with support, front glide with support, recovering to a vertical position and freestyle with support.

3 - 7 years old

5 - 10 years old

Headfirst entry from kneeling and standing position; underwater recovery of objects, treading water, simultaneous arm and leg movements on stomach without support, rotary breathing, dolphin kick, side stroke and elementary backstroke.

Advanced 1

5 - 12 years old

Free style, breathing to the side, stream line, backstroke and starting arm movements.

FREE Festival featuring live music, face painting, strolling performers, games, hot dog and watermelon eating contests, vendor booths, concessions and fireworks! In addition to the Festival activities, families can enjoy live music at Hughes Landing from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

BIKE PARADE AND DECORATING CONTEST AT NORTHSHORE PARK

Meet at the park on the Fourth of July for the annual decorating contest and parade! The contest is held right before the Concert in the Park. Decorating materials are provided, or you can bring your own.

COOL OFF ON THE FOURTH OF JULY AT A WOODLANDS TOWNSHIP POOL!

Families enjoy the holiday while having fun with the community’s lifeguards. Lifeguards at each pool select special themes and provide free activities and limited refreshments.

All ages!

Pools are free and open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Activities between noon and 4 p.m.
