If You See Something, Say Something
By Director of law enforcement services, Marian Montgomery leck, ICPs
the role of the police in community policing is important to residents. the Montgomery County sheriff’s Office and Harris County Constable’s Office Precinct 4 patrol our community and direct their efforts of reducing crime through various techniques. Knowing the criminal element, types of crimes being committed and knowing the community are examples of their efforts.
every definition of community policing shares the idea that the police and community must work together. all of us acting as the eyes and ears of our community will help deter crime. Our Got Watch? Get Watch! campaign follows this concept. don’t be a victim! Be pro-active! Take away the opportunity!
• Always lock up your home, vehicle and bicycle.
• Always close and lock your garage door (whether you’re home or away).
• Always set your alarm.
• Do not leave items in your vehicle (especially in plain view).
• Know your neighbor. Work together for a safe neighborhood.
• Be observant.
• Report suspicious activity immediately.
the Woodlands township, Montgomery County sheriff’s Office and Harris County Constable Precinct 4 encourage you to join the Woodlands Watch. If you want to start a neighborhood watch, call 281-210-3800. Be observant; make the call.
Montgomery County sheriff’s Office ..................... 936-442-7797 Harris County Constable Precinct 4 281-376-3472
the Woodlands township 281-210-3800 last year we reduced crimes against property by 35 percent. Keep up the good work!
Calling 9-1-1: Make the Call
By Holly steinke
If you have an emergency, make the call! Call 9-1-1 immediately to receive the emergency help you need. If you are in the Woodlands, your call is routed by your phone carrier to the nearest 9-1-1 call center, most likely either Montgomery County 9-1-1 or Greater Harris County 9-1-1. Here are some tips on what to do:
• Answer all questions.
• Don’t hang up.
• Follow instructions.
• Don’t text. (At least, not yet!)
• Call 9-1-1 in an emergency only.
• Remain calm and speak clearly.
Both call centers have “enhanced 9-1-1,” which means your landline phone call will be directed to the 9-1-1 call center closest to you and should automatically display the caller’s phone number and address. this enables calls to be dispatched quickly and efficiently to the proper police, fire or medical provider to serve your needs. you may still need to give your address for verification purposes, but know that help is probably already on the way!
Not all phones are the same. If you are calling from a mobile phone, you should give your county name and exact location, since the 9-1-1 system may not be able to locate you exactly.
If you have a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Provider) phone line through your computer line, be sure that you follow the directions given by your provider to register your number. If no instructions are given, check with your provider to see that they have registered your phone number properly with 9-1-1.
some information in this article was provided by Greater Harris County 9-1-1 and Montgomery County 9-1-1. Visit www.911.org and www.mc911.org for further information.

Cochran’s Crossing
“It’s hard to believe a faithful, fun-loving guy like me could be a public nuisance. But hey, if I’m stuck out in the yard all day I’m probably gonna do some barking. Maybe a lot of barking. It’s not exactly a federal case but it sure bugs the neighbors. I mean, why else would they call me a nuisance?”
If this scenario possibly fits your pet’s situation, maybe you should check with the neighbors. ask them. they’ll appreciate the consideration and if they tell you his bark’s worse than his bite, you can remedy the situation, eliminate any hard feelings, take pride in doing the right thing and you, your pooch and your neighbors can all live happily ever after. Oh, and there’s something else…when you’re out enjoying parks or pathways, clean up after your pet. It’s the responsible thing to do.

panther Creek
the Village of Panther Creek is in the heart of the Woodlands. Over the years, the Woodlands has proven that it can do anything worthwhile and worth doing. May is a great month for residents to enjoy a variety of outdoor events and activities. Many events in and around our village will be taking place this month. Panther Creek includes Northshore Park where the CB&I trI – the Woodlands triathlon, featuring 1,000 participants, will get underway early on May 5. It is one of the premier multi-sport events in the region and is sanctioned by usa triathlon. the village is close to rob Fleming Park where the touch-a-truck event will be held on May 12. this is an opportunity for every resident to get up close and personal with all kinds of big trucks. Climb into the seats and get first-hand information about the fire and emergency vehicles that provide outstanding service. a good way to end the month would be to head over to nearby Waterway square to celebrate Memorial
Day on May 26 and 27. Fireworks and live music will be featured on both saturday and sunday evenings. all of these events are only a short drive or bike ride away from our village! Check the township Web site for times and details for all of these events.
Please mark august 11 as the date for the annual baseball game outing at Minute Maid Park. Panther Creek Village association arranges and coordinates this event for the whole family with the other villages. the astros will be playing division rival Milwaukee Brewers on that date. this is a rain or shine event that includes bus transportation from the Woodlands.
May is also the month when we will be voting for four of seven positions on our township Board of Directors. election Day is May 12 and it will be preceded by early voting from april 30 through May 8. Please be sure and take time to learn about the candidates who are committed to volunteering their time, experience and abilities to help make our community the best place to live and work.
Our Panther Creek Village association board encourages and welcomes participation in these activities and events and we hope to see you there or at one of our monthly village association meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. the second thursday of each
month at the Woodlands township located at 2801 technology Forest Blvd.

the Woodlands Governance
summary of input received underway
as covered in previous issues of The Woodlands Community Magazine, regional Participation agreements (rPas) entered into with the Cities of Houston and Conroe prevent the annexation of the Woodlands and allow residents to determine their own future governance structure within the next 50 years. In 2007, voters overwhelmingly approved the change in governmental structure to become the Woodlands township; however, the rPas provide the opportunity to change the current governance structure, including the option to incorporate as a municipality after May 29, 2014.
the township’s Board of Directors has been working through a process to
proactively examine whether the current governance structure is best suited for the community now and into the future or whether changes need to be made. research has been completed and the results are important to everyone who lives or works in the Woodlands. several meetings and forums were held in March with residents, service providers and the business community to present the research completed to date and to gather feedback. During the month of april, a presentation was available for viewing on the township Web site that provided a brief history of the Governance Process, explained the current structure, outlined the decisions that lay ahead and presented the results
of the research completed. an electronic feedback form was also available to viewers so they could provide their input. all of the feedback received from the forums, meetings and Web site is being compiled into a summary report that will be presented to the township Board of Directors upon completion. the Board will then determine the next steps in the governance process.
For additional information about the Governance Process, please visit the township’s Web site at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov and click Government then transition and Governance. you can also follow along through monthly briefings provided at the Board of Directors’ meetings.

although it may be tempting to share a bite from a picnic lunch with our “feathered friends,” feeding ducks is more likely to harm them than it is to help them. Feeding ducks can have serious consequences, including overpopulation, spreading disease, disturbing migratory patterns and altering activity patterns, such as foraging behavior.
Human food is different from what ducks naturally eat and has less nutritional value for them. Filling up on human food also deters ducks from eating their natural food sources and receiving the nutrients they need for health and development. Many types of food, including chunks of bread, can be choking hazards for waterfowl. Bread thrown into water, if not eaten by a duck, begins to rot and adversely impacts the quality of the water and promotes bacterial infection in waterlife. When humans are not around, ducks may confuse food packaging with the food
source, damaging their digestive systems. even feeding duck feed to wild waterfowl is harmful because it alters the ducks’ natural foraging patterns and decreases the ducks’ fear of humans.
When ducks become dependent on humans for food, they lose their fear of humans, and will begin approaching humans for food. Feeding ducks reinforces aggressive behavior, which can lead to property damage and be a danger to children. Ducks have been known to snap at pond visitors in their attempts to get food. In their search for a handout, ducks may also wander into roadways where they can be injured or killed by oncoming traffic. Plus, ducks need their instinctive fear of humans or they become easy targets for people who do not respect wildlife and wish to harm them.
Please remember that the lakes and ponds were intended to be a natural environment to attract wild migratory birds.
Enjoy watching the wild ducks that make their home here. Teach your children to respect and enjoy nature.

Ballet brings Giselle, one of the most widely performed works of the romantic era, to the stage of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Friday, May 4, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Giselle is a journey into a beautiful world of love, ghosts and mystery. tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of George P. Mitchell and the Wortham Foundation. tickets not required for free seating. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.
Giselle, a moving new staging by celebrated russian ballerina ai-Gul Gaisina and artistic director stanton Welch, was choreographed by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli to a commissioned score by adolphe adam. the work originally premiered in Paris on June 28, 1841.
the story is about a peasant girl deceived by Count albrecht, her transformation into a Wili (the ghosts of women betrayed on their wedding day) and her forgiveness of her errant lover that results in his salvation. this new staging by Gaisina harkens back to the russian productions of her childhood. Before the full-length performance of Giselle, with live orchestra accompaniment, enjoy a presentation of the famous lakeside scene from Swan Lake, one of the most beautiful passages in all of classical ballet, and the spectacular classical showpiece, Le Corsaire (The Pirate).
“I hope that the lyrical, delicate, and grave beauty of Giselle will stir the
emotions of audiences of all ages,” said Gaisina. “If there is one story that will be a benchmark for ballet lovers’ knowledge, it will always be Giselle. I hope my contribution to the important piece of art will be a meaningful one.”

Fight the Bite
By lynne aldrich
Mostresidents of the Woodlands would say that the drought last year had a positive impact on mosquito activity. asian tiger mosquitoes, the aggressive black and white daytime biters, were greatly reduced in number in large part due to the drought. However, the disease-carrying Culex quinquefasciatus or southern house mosquito was active later in the season and found in some of the highest numbers recorded since surveillance started in 2004.
the drought was one reason for the high numbers of southern house mosquitoes, which are stagnant water breeders. typically in summer, the occasional, heavy rainstorm washes away
the debris that accumulates in storm drains. Without these heavy downpours, stagnant puddles and the larvae that thrive in that environment became an issue.
Irrigation technique was another contributor to the numbers. Irrigation played a role when water from sprinklers was allowed to run off landscapes, thereby feeding stagnant puddles in ditches and storm drains.
residents in many neighborhoods make a difference in the mosquito activity regardless of the weather patterns. Irrigation is a key factor. an inch of water a week is enough for lawn and garden. If your landscape cannot absorb that much at one time, be sure to cycle and soak,

allowing time for water to soak into the soil before turning the sprinklers back on. In addition, keeping debris, grass clippings and leaves out of storm drains is critical.
Make being outside this summer a safer, more enjoyable experience. Once or twice a week, walk around your yard and the common areas of your neighborhood to make sure there are no containers of water providing breeding sites for the aggressive daytime asian tiger mosquito. a six-inch saucer or puddle of water can produce up to 1,000 mosquitoes a week! since mosquitoes generally remain near their breeding site, working with neighbors to eliminate breeding sites will help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease around your home.
Neighborhood and community groups can request a presentation on how to work together to dramatically reduce mosquitoes or schedule mosquito surveillance by calling the Woodlands township at 281-210-3800.
Water running off landscapes from incorrect irrigation not only wastes this valuable resource, it creates breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Sponsor highlight: Massage envy
A massage after vigorous exercise unquestionably feels good, and it seems to reduce pain and help muscles recover. Many people, both athletes and health professionals, have long contended it eases inflammation, improves blood flow and reduces muscle tightness. But until now no one has understood why massage has this apparently beneficial effect.
Now researchers have found what happens to muscles when a massage therapist goes to work on them. Vigorous exercise causes tiny tears in muscle fibers, leading to an immune reaction — inflammation — as the body gets to work repairing the injured cells. So the researchers screened the tissue from the massaged and unmassaged legs to compare their repair processes, and find out what difference massage would make.
They found that massage reduced the production of compounds called cytokines, which play a critical role in inflammation. Massage also stimulated mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses inside cells that convert glucose into the energy essential for cell function and repair.
Getting a massage from a professional massage therapist is as easy as calling your local Massage Envy. There are two locations in The Woodlands, one at Market Street 281-466-4645, and one at Indian Springs 281-465-9596. Call today to schedule your next post-exercise massage!
