Summary of Accomplishments

The2018 Summary of Accomplishments was recently presented to the Township Board of Directors by the President/General Manager and can be found online at www. thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/summaryofaccomplishments. The summary notes that the Township Board of Directors took a number of actions in 2018 to improve the Township’s overall financial condition and to assure the continuation of high-quality services:

• Initiated a study for governance and incorporation planning services. In addition, the Board continued to fund an Incorporation Reserve to provide financial planning for the potential transition of The Woodlands Township from a special purpose district to an incorporated city.

• Re-opened Bear Branch Pool, according to the Master Plan of Bear Branch Park, which included reconstruction of the recreational pool, additional parking and ingress/egress improvements.

• Began construction of an adventure course, located at the Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park, and expected to open in spring 2019.

• Launched mobile ticketing for The Woodlands Express Park and Ride, along with a “Next Bus” tracking app.

• Expanded the Town Center Trolley services to include Hughes Landing and launched a tracking app for the trolleys and riders.

• Approved the 2019 budget, prioritizing public safety, governance and community maintenance while responding to resident requests for enhanced parks and recreation and cultural amenities and pedestrian and bike plan improvements.

• The Woodlands Fire Department reaffirmed its prestigious Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of 1.

• The Waterway Cruisers and Mobike left the community, and were replaced with beautiful swan boats on Lake Woodlands, providing a new and popular amenity.

EARTH DAY GreenUp 2019

Join neighbors, family and friends at the Earth Day GreenUp on Saturday, March 23, 2019! Volunteer to beautify our community by picking up litter on pathways, waterways and greenbelts. After your hard work, celebrate at Northshore Park with free pizza, face painting, live music and an event T-shirt. Together, residents keep The Woodlands beautiful and protect natural areas for wildlife by helping in this community stewardship project.

GreenUp invites everyone to take ownership of our environment. Recruit or join a group of your peers; you may find that you’ll meet neighbors and create new friends while enjoying the outdoors. Disposable gloves, bags and maps will be provided during check-in at a designated park in each village. Remember to bring a reusable water bottle and your favorite work gloves to minimize waste. Ensure equipment for your team by preregistering by March 11, 2019.

After the cleanup, the entire community is invited to celebrate in the spirit of Earth Day with food, fun and live music for all ages at Northshore Park, 2505 Lake Woodlands Drive. Local organizations will present fun activities and information on how you can make every day Earth Day. Learn and play games that will teach you that “green starts with me.”

Volunteers will receive a commemorative T-shirt and be treated to pizza. Beverages will be available, but remember to bring your own bottle to be refilled at the Refilling Station. Food tickets will be on sale to the public.

Spring is here, and it’s time to get out on the lake! The Woodlands Township’s boat houses offer water fun in the form of single and tandem kayak rentals, and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), all with access to the lower waterway, Northshore Park, Southshore Park, The Cove, Hughes Landing and more. Paddling on Lake Woodlands is a great family trip, fun date idea, workout or corporate/group outing. We even allow canine ride-alongs on the kayaks! The Riva Row Boat House is also now offering the very popular swan pedal boats for rent on the upper waterway – a great way to get a unique perspective on all the fun happening in Town Center!

The Boat Houses are open from 9 a.m. to sunset, Thursday through Monday with the last boat out one hour prior to sunset. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday, except open daily during spring break!

You must be at least 10 years old to ride in a boat alone. Ages between 10-15 must be accompanied by someone 16+ (together or separate). Ages 16-17 may rent alone, but must have an 18+ sign the boat house waiver. Only single riders are allowed on stand-up paddleboards. Swan pedal boats maximum weight limit is 700 pounds; best if there are riders in all four seats; boat age limits still apply.

In March, Riva Row Boat House is offering 55+ Advanced Kayaking Class for those that have novice skills and comfort in a kayak, and are ready to explore new areas of Lake Woodlands and elsewhere. We will meet at Riva Row on Mondays in March, from 2 to 4 p.m. Ages 55 and up only; fee is $50 for registration, all dates included. To register, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.

The dangers of distracted driving are plastered on billboards alongside highways, emotionally conveyed in television commercials and emphasized in the news, yet drivers everywhere still text, snap and scroll while they are behind the wheel. Why is this? It seems like the new state law and the facts surrounding distracted driving crashes aren’t enough to convince people that it’s just not worth it.

So, what will prevent drivers from putting people and themselves in danger while they attempt to use their phone and drive? Being rewarded for good behavior! Instead of focusing on bad habits and bad outcomes, it’s more advantageous to focus on good ones. SAFE 2 SAVE was created to do just this! SAFE 2 SAVE rewards drivers points for every minute they drive over ten miles per hour. Drivers are reminded through a personal photo the reasons they shouldn’t tech and drive—as well as reminded to not use their phones while on the road. Points can be redeemed at businesses and restaurants.

The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch has partnered with SAFE 2 SAVE to launch the Tech Free 4 Me Driving Village Challenge. Residents can download the app and enter their Village Code to begin earning points. Points earned are also credited to the driver’s village. The village association with the top three point totals will win $1,000, $700 or $300. For Village Codes, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/neighborhoodwatch and select Village Challenge. Enter the code ‘WOODLANDS’ when downloading to earn an instant 500 points.

New for 2019

The Woodlands Township’s Park and Ride bus service, known as The Woodlands Express, now offers two new services for 2019: a pilot program 8 a.m. run from the Sterling Ridge Park and Ride Lot, and a new stop at The Texas Medical Center.

New Sterling Ridge 8 a.m. Run

A six-month pilot program, which began on January 2, 2019, has added a run at 8 a.m. from Sterling Ridge. After six months, the Township will evaluate performance and decide if the new run will become permanent. This new run creates additional opportunity and choice for passengers in proximity to the Sterling Ridge Park and Ride, and gives a new option for riders seeking a later start time.

New Texas Medical Center Stop at UT School of Dentistry

A new stop in the Texas Medical Center now picks up and drops off at the UT School of Dentistry, in front of the UT Health Building. This will be the new last and first stop in The Medical Center during morning and evening runs, respectively.

The Woodlands Express service provides a comfortable, convenient and economical way to commute to downtown Houston and beyond. Destinations include the Texas Medical Center, Greenway Plaza, as well as the Central Business District of Houston. Scheduled service is provided Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from three Park and Ride locations in The Woodlands. The Woodlands Express also offers mobile ticketing, a bus locator app and a Twitter feed for updates (@townshiptransit).

for weekend rides to the rodeo

Residents and visitors of The Woodlands and surrounding areas now have an easy and convenient way to enjoy the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, thanks to a recent action by The Woodlands Township Board of Directors.

“We’repleased to debut The Woodlands Express Rodeo Service on key weekends for our residents and visitors,” said Gordy Bunch, Township Chairman of the Board. “We’ve heard from many of our residents about an express service, and we’re giving it a try this year. It sure takes the hassle out of driving and finding a parking spot, and feels a lot safer, too.”

The Woodlands Express, the Township’s Park and Ride transportation service to Houston, will be heading to NRG Stadium on weekends during the rodeo, offering riders an opportunity to

enjoy all the festivities without driving and parking concerns. Service will be provided three weekends during the rodeo: March 2 and 3, March 9 and 10, and March 16 and 17, 2019.

The cost of round-trip transportation to the event is $25 per person. This is a special service, and therefore The Woodlands Express regular tickets are not valid.

Beginning Saturday, March 2, 2019, The Woodlands Express Rodeo Service buses will leave the Sterling Ridge Park and Ride location with return trips leaving NRG Stadium from the METRO/ Rodeo Express pickup location. Trips

will run throughout the day and evening at scheduled intervals. The schedule is posted online, and reservations must be made at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/rodeo

SPRAYGROUNDS ARE NOW OPEN

PROVIDING REFRESHING, OUTDOOR FAMILY FUN!

The Woodlands Township has five parks with spraygrounds, also called splash pads, and all are now open for the season from March 1, 2019, through October 31, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., daily. Spraygrounds combine the fun of water play for kids without the danger of standing water, making them ideal for young families and inexperienced swimmers. All Township spraygrounds utilize filtered, chemically treated and recycled water that is tested and monitored daily. Residents are asked to respectfully follow all posted rules for their safety and cautioned to pay extra close attention to toddlers and pre-school aged children – especially when older children are running around the pad.

The spraygrounds at May Valley, Timarron and Village Green do not require a pool pass or entry fee at any time. They are located conveniently close to (rentable) pavilions or seating areas in their respective parks and are popular destinations for birthday parties and other family celebrations.*

The spraygrounds at Sawmill and Shadowbend are located adjacent to popular Township swimming pools. Outside of lifeguarded public swim hours, the spraygrounds are free to use and accessible from the park’s side gates. But during public swim hours, the spraygrounds are closed from the park side and become part of the pool complex in order to make for a safer and more enjoyable environment for all involved. Accordingly, pool entry requirements apply to these two spraygrounds during public pool hours.

Cochran’s Crossing

Last month, the Township held the village association board elections. At the time of candidate filing closing, there were only 17 candidates and 18 spots on the Cochran’s Crossing board. That means there is an opening for an additional person interested in a board position!

Cochran’s Crossing has a defined process to bring a new director on board. Board officers will be elected later this month. Please call The Woodlands Township Program Specialist at 281-210-3887 for the best contact for more information.

The Cochran’s Crossing elections are for only one year in office. However, there is no limitation on the number of terms. Over the years this has worked well for Cochran’s Crossing. The mix of new and experienced directors has been effective. New ideas, enthusiasm and a desire to serve the community have been a natural process.

Remember, there are opportunities to take part in Cochran’s Crossing activities without being on the Board of Directors. Village association board meetings are always open to the public and are held in the Township meeting rooms at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month except for December.

It appears the issue of incorporation will continue to remain under consideration. The village organizational structure is clearly a principle conduit for communication for and against issues

of interest. Throughout the year, it is reasonable to expect speakers on the topic to be scheduled at our village association meetings. Keep up to date on those activities through the Cochran’s Crossing Facebook page, newsletter and website.

College Park

Looking for a family activity this spring? Sign up to participate in the ninth annual Earth Day clean up on Saturday, March 23, 2019. Join other volunteers as you clean up litter in designated areas throughout The Woodlands. Our goal in College Park is to have 70 participants. Will your family help us reach our goal this year? Sign up on the Township Environmental Services Department website.

Looking further ahead, we hope to see you again this year at the Poolooza pool party. The party is in May and more details will follow. But, if you have joined us in the past, you know that there is plenty of fun and food for everyone!

It’s a long way off but no better time than NOW to start thinking about the November recycling event. Save your used batteries. We will be collecting them at the 3R Bazaar in November. Remember that there are monetary rewards for the villages that collect the most. This money funds the scholarships we award each year to college-bound seniors who demonstrate participation in community service.

Be the first on your block to sign up for this year’s community-wide challenge sponsored by the Neighborhood Watch: Tech Free 4 Me Driving Village Challenge. Download the Safe2Save mobile app and begin to earn points for driving tech free. Win prizes! This challenge will run from February 1 through October 15, 2019. EVENTS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Remember that each year you must sign a separate pledge for the current year. It’s easy to do and supports your village association.

We could use your help in other ways. We have vacant positions on our College Park Board. Get connected to the community and your neighbors. Get insight on what is happening in The Woodlands. Be part of what makes College Park a great place to live. The time commitments are typically one meeting each month and volunteering for some of our activities which are usually on the weekend. Most, if not all the activities, are family friendly so while you volunteer your family can have fun.

Grogan’s Mill

The Woodlands Township is now registering volunteers for the Earth Day GreenUp, a Great American Cleanup event, on Saturday, March 23, 2019, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Neighborhoods, clubs, scouts, church groups, schools, families and individuals are invited to join in the cleanup effort that targets litter on pathways, waterways and natural areas. For more information, please call the Township’s Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800.

Residents living in areas of The Woodlands served by the WJPA are eligible for a lifetime 50 percent rebate (up to $150) for a number of water conservation devices and products. The newest rebate initiative is for native plants. The WJPA has compiled a list of 100 drought–tolerant native plants that thrive in The Woodlands. The list of plants is available online at www.wjpa.org/services/rebates. Residents may submit their receipts in person to the Customer Service Desk at the Water Resources Building, 2455 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77380 or email them to bgoad@wjpa.org.

The Woodlands Environmental Services Department’s yearly challenge is on! This year the challenge is to collect used AA, AAA, C and D batteries. We are unable to accept lithium, silver oxide or lithium primary batteries. The Woodlands Farmer’s Market is a designated drop off point for the used batteries. Look for the orange bins in the middle of the market. The contest ends in November, so bring your batteries all year! The money won from the challenge will be donated to schools in our village. In 2018, Grogan’s Mill collected 614 pounds of batteries and won second place in the challenge.

There is still plenty of produce, honey, olive oil and food to enjoy throughout the week at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market. The market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, at 7 Switchbud Place in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center. In addition to our regular lineup of vendors that sell everything from produce to eggs to meat to artisan goods, most Saturdays we have live music and a food truck. The Woodlands Marathon is scheduled for March 2, 2019, starting in the Town Center area, traveling in and around The Woodlands and finishing along The Woodlands Waterway. There are also several other events associated with the race, including a 5K run, 2K fun run/ walk for kids and a fitness expo, among other activities held on several dates. The Woodlands Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and is popular with spectators and cheer zones. Approximately 9,000 runners are expected to participate.

Successful Village Challenge

The Indian Springs Village Association would like to thank everyone that participated in the Hands-Only CPR Village Challenge. Not only did we learn how to potentially save a life, but our village also received second place and $700 to be added to our scholarship fund.

We invite all of our neighbors to participate in the next Village Challenge that runs from February 1, 2019, through October 15, 2019. This year’s challenge is focused on cutting down on distracted driving. To enter, residents will need to download the “Safe2Save” app on their smartphones. Once registered, Indian

Springs residents will join the “Indian Springs Village Group” competition by using the invitation code “Indian.” If the app is open, it will give one point while driving over 10 miles per hour without touching your phone. Scholarship Application Deadline

Remember, scholarship applications must be postmarked or delivered to your high school counselor before March 18, 2019. Winners will be announced on April 1, 2019, and invited to attend the village association board meeting on April 10, 2019, at 7 p.m.

In addition to her work for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, where she was recognized as Woman of the Year, she helps The Pangea Network which empowers young women through education and skills training. Her work in support of local small businesses was recognized by The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce with the Volunteer of the Year and the Diplomat of the Year awards.

Almost30 years ago, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion opened its gates and dazzled audiences with a starstudded weekend featuring performances by the Houston Symphony, Frank Sinatra and Alabama with Clint Black. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Celebrates 30th Season

The Pavilion will kick off its 30th season with a special performance by The Boston Pops on Tour Thursday, March 21, 2019, as they celebrate the music of John Williams, one of the greatest film composers of all time. The evening will feature excerpts from the composer’s best-loved scores, such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park, as well as some lesser-known gems. Orchestra tickets range from $35-$50, and lawn and mezzanine seating will be free.

“We are honored to provide topquality live performances to our community and to our region,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “And like the initial dream of Cynthia Woods Mitchell, it is intended to

• Remove mildew/algae from all exterior surfaces.

• Repair and repaint siding.*

• Store trash and recycle carts out of sight from any adjacent public or private property.

• Remove all loose trash, debris and yard waste. Dumping of any waste into / onto adjacent reserves and greenbelts is expressly prohibited.

• Remove pine needles, leaves and debris from roof. Removal will improve the longevity of the roof, reduce fire hazard and discourage pests.

Is the appearance of your home blemished by algae and mildew?

The following are some suggestions for removing algae and mildew from your home.

• A solution of 10 parts water to one part common bleach (strength of mixture can be increased for removal of heavy growth). Be sure to wet foundation plantings first and rinse everything in clean water when done to protect plants from the bleach. Wear gloves and be careful not to come in contact with bleach. Please be aware that high concentrations of bleach may discolor your paint.

• Wipe or scrub with detergent and water.

• There are a number of cleaning products and suggestions for removing these substances from the exterior of the home that can be found and sold at your local home improvement store.

Prevention is always best! Periodic cleaning with a power washer containing WATER ONLY may help prevent the problem altogether. Remember: Mildew removal may reveal the need to repaint your home. If so, be sure to take the appropriate actions.

Trash and recycle carts left out where others can see them detract from the appearance of the neighborhood, decrease the resale value of homes on the street, and impose on the next-door neighbors.

Expect the Best for Your Neighborhood!

All trash, refuse or recycling containers may be placed near the street edge no earlier than one day prior to waste collection. Emptied containers must be removed from the street, front yard or driveway by the end of the collection day. Containers must be stored on the owner’s property at all times. All trash and refuse containers must be stored out of public view at ground level from the street or alley or adjacent and surrounding properties at all times except during waste collection.

Annual Emergency Preparedness Event

Don’t wait for disaster to strike before making your game plan. Attend The Woodlands Township Emergency Preparedness Event on Saturday, March 30, 2019, to learn from experts and make a plan for you and your family.

Hurricane season starts on June 1, 2019, so now is a good time to meet neighbors, update supplies, gather emergency documents and find out about the technologies available to assist you in case of a hurricane or other emergency. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch Emergency Preparedness Event will help you to prepare on Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Woodlands Township Town Hall, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. The family-friendly event is free to attend! The event features planned presentations from a National Weather Service forecaster, utility providers and others; booths with public safety and community organization staff and volunteers ready to answer your questions; ambulance, fire truck, patrol car and other emergency vehicles to climb aboard; demonstrations; volunteer information, training class sign-ups and more. Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management both plan to have representatives in attendance.

“Emergency preparedness is an ongoing process that takes the entire community to be successful,” said Jason S. Washington, The Woodlands Fire Department Emergency Preparedness Battalion Chief. “It starts with our citizens being diligent, aware and willing to help our neighbors and first responders prepare, respond and most importantly, recover from any disaster.”

Each family will receive an emergency document bag and a minilantern, while supplies last, and have a chance to enter a drawing for additional emergency preparedness supplies. Stay for the whole event or just stop by when you can. The event is rain or shine with indoor and outdoor activities.

CenterPoint Energy is the Presenting Sponsor and will have bucket trucks onsite, as well as representatives from the electric and gas areas of their business. They will focus on hurricane preparedness and provide safety information and giveaways.

“The beginning of hurricane season is a good reminder of the importance of emergency preparation. No two storms are alike, which makes it difficult to forecast what the exact damage to our electric system could be and how long outages could last. However, preparation is key,” said

Pierce Prater, Service Consultant Supervisor for CenterPoint Energy.

“Just as CenterPoint Energy has an Emergency Operations Plan should a hurricane strike, we urge customers to have their own emergency plan as well and be prepared to be without power for two weeks or possibly longer, depending on the severity of the storm.”

If you live in the Entergy Texas, Inc. electric service area, they will be there, too. Also, watch for your water provider and other service agencies that help in times of emergency.

This event includes chip-timed 5K and 10K trail runs, the Little Muddy Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run and 2K-9 fun run for you and your dog. All courses wind through the beautiful George Mitchell Nature Preserve, located on 1,800 wooded acres adjacent to Rob Fleming Park in Creekside Park. The festive Post-Race Party will feature live Zydeco music, the Muddy Bowl Crawfish Cook-Off and children’s activities. Concessions will be available for purchase from vendors onsite for spectators and attendees. Race registration fee includes finisher medal, cotton participant T-Shirt and complimentary food and beverages at the Post-Race Party. Muddy Trails Bash is a USA Track and Field (USATF) sanctioned event. Please note, this is not a mud run or an adventure race.

Show off your crawfish boiling skills in the Muddy Bowl Crawfish CookOff. Teams of up to eight members will be provided three bags of crawfish for $300, five bags of crawfish for $400 or

seven bags of crawfish for $600, serving containers, 10’x10’ tent, table and chairs. Teams bring their cooking materials, spices and fire extinguisher. Awards will be given to Judge’s Choice: Best Crawfish, People’s Choice: Best Crawfish, Best Decorated Tent and Best Cajun Dish. There is no fee for spectators and attendees.

How a Light Bulb Can Save Water!

It’s not a link that is often considered, but water and energy systems are tightly connected.

Ittakes a lot of water to make electricity—especially for thermoelectric power production. In 2015, total U.S. water withdrawals (water taken from a fresh water source like a lake or river) for thermoelectric power accounted for 40 percent of total water withdrawal. That added up to 133 billion gallons of water per day of which 72 percent were from freshwater sources. When severe drought affected more than a third of the U.S. in 2012, limited water supply constrained the operation of many power plants.

In the case of a hurricane, the stress is the reverse. Without power, water treatment facilities can’t function. Hurricane Harvey left hundreds of communities in southeast Texas without safe drinking water. In total, 45 water systems shut down and 171 areas issued boil water notices. Thankfully, Houston was not on that list.

These issues may be on a large scale, but there are a number of things individuals can do to conserve water or energy. They just require a new way of thinking—by conserving water or energy, you are in fact helping to conserve both.

Water and Energy Conservation Tips

• Turn off lights when leaving a room.

• Use energy efficient light bulbs, such as LEDs. See the What a Bright Idea box to get a free bulb!

• Eliminate “phantom” power usage by unplugging household devices and chargers when not in use.

• Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

• Reduce the amount of water you use in your landscape by minimizing turf grass and planting natives.

• Install a water efficient shower head.

A Note About Tropical Milkweed in Pollinator Gardens

The January issue of The Woodlands Community Magazine featured a Plant for Pollinators article, in which milkweed was mentioned and its importance to the monarch butterfly population. It is important to note that there are different types of milkweed, and one in particular is detrimental to the butterflies.

The relative virtues and problems associated with Tropical

Milkweed, Asclepias curassavica, is a hot topic and focus of research. This well-adapted non-native is the milkweed species found most at local nurseries, and as a result, has been well established. Its proliferation, in the southern parts of Texas in particular, coupled with its near year-round foliage and flower production, has led to issues relative to the health and sustainability of the monarch butterfly species. Tropical milkweed does two things:

• It interferes with the monarch’s migratory cycle, encouraging them to linger in the southern states and continue breeding and laying eggs, “trapping” them here where they cannot survive temperatures that drop toward the freezing mark.

• It significantly increases the rate monarchs are infected by the debilitating Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE) protozoan pathogen. Because tropical milkweed doesn’t die back in winter, infected plants persist. Infected plants in Texas are especially harmful because they

sit in the gateway for the spring and fall monarch migrations. Monarchs that visit infected plants pick up parasite spores and carry them to uninfected plants.

It is, therefore, very important to cut tropical milkweed plants to within four to six inches of the ground each November. It also makes the case for the importance of planting native milkweed species.

What You Can Do

If you have tropical milkweed, cut it to the ground in November to prevent the spread of OE and any interference with the monarch’s migratory cycle. If you did not cut yours in November, do it now. Consider planting native milkweed instead, such as:

Asclepias incarnate, Swamp milkweed

Asclepias perennis, Aquatic milkweed

Asclepias tuberosa, Butterflyweed

Asclepias verticillata, Whorled Milkweed

Asclepias viridi, Green milkweed

Rebates Abound from Your Water Service

Customers of The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA) have a lifetime $150 rebate (50 percent of $300) on a wide variety of water savings devices available for redemption. Here are rebate categories available to residents:

NATIVE PLANTS: A new initiative, started in 2018, is the rebate program for native plants. WJPA has chosen 100 drought-tolerant plants native to southeast Texas. Once established, these plants will save money on water bills, because they need less water than most non-natives. The list of acceptable plants, and authorized dealers are described at www.wjpa.org/rebates

RAIN BARRELS: The Woodlands receives almost 50 inches of rain a year. However, once that rain falls, it flows out of The Woodlands on its way to the Gulf. Rain barrels are one way to capture some of that water for our use. Rain barrels come in all shapes and sizes and are available at big box outlets, nurseries and online. One source for rain barrels is a non-profit organization, The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., which offers the barrels at significant discounts. Add the rebate and it’s a great deal. SMART WATER CONTROLLERS: A burgeoning new water-saving technology. Smart controllers take the place of existing irrigation controllers, connecting to your Wi-Fi system and controllable on your mobile phone, laptop or desktop, from anywhere in the world. These systems take information from evapotranspiration centers, NOAA and other weather services and adapt your watering needs in relation to rainfall.

DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEMS work especially well for ornamental plants. No water is wasted. Instead of some water being lost through evaporation, all the water gets down to the roots of the plants, where it’s needed.

RAIN SENSORS: Inexpensive but effective, these devices use a simple evaporation process to determine rain amount. They will turn your irrigation system on or off depending on the amount of rainfall received. Of course, the rain sensor rebate is only available if you haven’t already received a rebate for a smart controller.

Residents can take their receipts to the Water Resources building at 2455 Lake Robbins Drive, send it to The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency, 2455 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77830, ATTENTION: Rebate or email a copy of the receipt to bgoad@wjpa.org. The rebate will appear on the next water bill cycle.

In total, 3,262 gallons of trash, approximately 2,174 pounds, was collected from our green spaces. This is equivalent to 34 trash carts!
