After a summer break, Wanaka Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is back into weekly riding sessions on Thursdays at Waterfall Creek Equestrian Centre. Our team of around 20 volunteers are always looking for more helpers, so if you can spare an hour or two on Thursdays during school Terms 1 and 4 (approximately 4 February until 14 April and then 20 October until 10 December) please let us know. No experience is necessary and it is a truly rewarding experience helping our riders and spending time with the quiet horses. Our fantastic coaches Virginia and Carol provide the expertise, but many hands make light work.
We are able to provide this service to the Wanaka community free of charge, thanks to grants and donations. Without our generous sponsors we would be unable to operate, so if you would like to contribute, please contact us. No amount is too big or too small. Covid permitting, we will hold an open day later in the year to show our thanks and showcase what we do. We will also be back at Mitre 10 MEGA with our famous sausage sizzles in the near future! On Monday there was a vehicle crash as a result of failing to give way. Take care at intersections. On Wednesday there were 3 family harm incidents attended as well as a crash in the Cardrona Valley. A stolen car was recovered which was in fact no longer stolen.
There were reports of people scoping about building sites but Police were unable to get sufficient information to identify them. Tradies please secure what tools you can to minimise the risk of theft. In the early hours of Saturday morning a number of inebriated individuals roaming the streets required Police help. One thought they were in Twizel and the other thought the road was a good place to sleep.

The day shift saw a number of driving complaints reported and some trespass notices served. In the evening some turkeys on Lake Hawea decided it would be a good idea to test if an old flare still worked. It did in fact work and thankfully some local knowledge knew who set it off thus not setting off a full blown rescue response. An individual at a local watering hole took exception at being no longer served alcohol and was asked to leave, so they lashed out and assaulted a staff member. They were subsequently arrested and dealt with appropriately. On Sunday Police attended another sudden death. Again our thoughts are with that family.

On Wednesday and Thursday Police deployed Search and Rescue to locate two groups who were overdue in the Mount Aspiring National Park. Both groups were stranded by high river levels in the Wilkin and Haast River’s respectively. The Wanaka Swift Water rescue team were deployed to rescue the group stranded by the swollen Haast River near Fantail falls.
Sadly, on Friday two families lost loved ones and our thoughts are with them in this difficult time. Police attended to support the families and on behalf of the Coroner.

Remember playing hard, winning games and really feeling involved. Are you still in love with the beautiful game? Men’s football kicks off again this week. Come down to Kelly’s Flat to play, train and enjoy the game. The senior men’s teams return for preseason training at 6.30pm on Thursday, 10 February at Kelly’s Flat. Training is then on every Tuesday and Thursday, with matches on Saturdays. Last year, the Club had three teams competing - the Prems playing in the ODT
Southern Premier League and both the Prem Reserves and the Socials playing in the Central Otago First Division. Whether you’ve played at a top level, were obsessed when you were younger, or just enjoy the odd kick-about, the Club welcomes players of all standards, experience and ambitions. Wanaka AFC’s focus is to be a club that continuously nurtures players - especially the young players coming through their junior club and the Olé Academy. The Mt Aspiring Netball Club is excited to welcome The Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel to Wanaka for their pre-season training. The team are excited to immerse themselves in the community and provide some opportunities to kick start your preseason netball training for 2022.
The Committee is planning pre-season training and that will start on Thursday, 17 February. More information will be released soon on Facebook. The idea about the training session is to give the players assistance with pre-season fitness, ball skills and court time.

With the red restrictions now firmly in place for the foreseeable future, we wanted to let you all know that our volunteer brigade will be responding to any and all fire and medical events as normal. The only difference is that you’ll see us with a few more items of protection than usual - namely facemasks and gloves.
The recent wet weather has been a welcome addition to the region, as anyone who has checked out the Glendhu fire damage will appreciate, but please remember that it takes a surprisingly long time for dry vegetation to moisten up, so please continue to be vigilant about fire risks around your property.
