WĀNAKA HISTORY BRINGING UPPER CLUTHA HISTORY TO LIFE Submitted by: Catherine Hart

At the beginning of 2025, the Upper Clutha History Society launched its new logo, website and social media accounts for Wānaka History. Wānaka History is made up of two main components; an extensive website and a QR-Code/Plaque project for physical markers of important historical sites across the district. So far, plaques have been installed at the Queensberry Inn and the Wānaka Hotel, with a plaque at the original police precinct to be installed by mid-April. The primary goal is to bring the stories and vibrant history of the Upper Clutha region to life for the local community, visitors and tourists. The new website, www.wanakahistory.org, contains countless stories, biographies and images, as well as past newsletters and further resources. Content is uploaded on a regular basis, and the site is expected to

Grant Writing

The Society is privileged to receive support and assistance from an expanded group of volunteers who are engaged in continued capture of historical records, creating digital archives, oral history interviews and content creation. The Society has received grant funding support from Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust and Queenstown Lakes District Council for this ambitious project. New members and volunteers are welcome and encouraged to participate through the Wānaka History website. The website also allows individuals to register for the regular Upper Clutha History Society Newsletter – ‘THOSE WERE THE DAYS’.
