1994 to raise awareness of breast cancer and to promote the message that early detection saves lives. These were indeed dark days... when breast cancer was not talked about, women were far less knowledgeable and too many families were devastated by loss. Council Snippets A new pool for Wanaka? Does Wanaka need a new swimming pool and a learners pool? Where should it be? And the biggest question of all – how much more in rates and entry charges are you willing to pay for it? These questions will be part of QLDC’s month-long consultation with the community, beginning at the end of this week. The Council will con¿rm the consultation at a special meeting on Thursday. Upper Clutha Track A section of the Upper Clutha Track by the Albert Town bridge is likely to be closed for good because the river bank is slumping. There’s an alternative route along the terrace above the track. Please follow the signs.

One of the Àow-on effects of changes to liquor laws is that we have to replace the existing bylaw that controls liquor in public places. The Council would like your views about the proposed new Alcohol Ban Bylaw, which is now out for consultation. If it’s adopted in its draft form, there would be no change to the alcohol bans that current prevent the public consumption of liquor between 10pm and 8am in the Wanaka CBD and at Hawea. If the Council wanted to extend the ban it would need evidence that alcohol was causing crime and disorder. If you have a view, or evidence to share, please make a submission before October.
