Wastebusters is determined to make this a thing of the past with the return of Every Bite, the food appreciation programme that is helping households reduce food waste and save money on their groceries, one zero-waste trick at a time.

With New Zealanders throwing away around 157,000 tonnes of food every year (roughly equivalent to the weight of 2.4 million sheep!), food waste is more than just an annoying fridge cleanout, it’s a nationwide problem and one that starts in our kitchens. That is where local chef and zero-waste champion Evelyn Vallilee comes in.

Evelyn and the Wastebusters team will get the programme underway on Thursday, 30 April at the Lake Wānaka Centre. Participants will enjoy a

Tickets are $20 per person for the four-week programme including dinner and drinks at both the launch and wrap events. All proceeds go to Wānaka Food Bank. For more information and to purchase a ticket, visit: wastebusters.co.nz/events

Wastebusters is proud to deliver Every Bite as part of the Ministry for the Environment’s National Food Waste Reduction programme. It is co-funded and supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Zero Waste District Programme as a Resourceful Communities event.

Castaways second-hand clothing sale

A fresh take on fashion is back this April in Wānaka, as the popular Castaways second-hand clothing sale returns on Saturday, 18 April from 10.00am - 1.00pm at Paetara Aspiring Central.

Shoppers can expect a wide range of men’s, women’s and children’s pre-loved clothing and accessories, all at wallet-friendly prices. The event brings together the thrill of nding a bargain with a growing movement toward more sustainable shopping habits.

As awareness builds around the environmental impact of fast fashion, second-hand events like Castaways are gaining popularity. By extending the life of clothing, shoppers help reduce textile waste and lower the demand for new production - making each purchase a more conscious choice.

Organiser Rach Peden says the event is as much about community as it is about clothing. “It’s a chance for people to connect, refresh their wardrobes, and rethink how we shop”.

With cooler months approaching, it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some quality winter pieces without the premium price tag.

WHEN: Saturday, 18 April. 10.00am - 1.00pm.

GENERAL

CRIME

POLICE ARRESTED A 21-YEAR-OLD MALE on 23 March for breaching his Police Safety Order. He was located by Police in Wānaka, arrested and appeared in Queenstown District Court on Monday, 30 March.

POLICE RESPONDED TO AN OUT-OF-CONTROL PARTY on Mills Road on 28 March at about 9.00pm, having received multiple complaints from residents. Approximately 80 intoxicated youth were on the road yelling and congregating in a disorderly fashion. Police spent considerable time clearing the party and moving on intoxicated youth. One young female was so intoxicated that an ambulance was called to provide medical attention. Due to the volume of youth vacating the area, Police monitored their behaviour to prevent further issues in the surrounding environs. This incident absorbed a considerable amount of Police resources, caused a lot of disturbance to local residents and resulted in a signi cant amount of damage to the property. The owner was unaware of the party and has been left with a sizeable and disheartening mess to clean up. The unlawful behaviour is simply unacceptable. The actions of those responsible for the damage is being investigated. Police urge parents, especially those linked to the youth who attended the party to re ect on this incident and help prevent a repeat. Police have serious concerns about the community impact, the gross levels of intoxication, the behaviour in general, and the damage caused.

POLICE HAVE IDENTIFIED THE OFFENDER of a wilful damage incident earliert this month relating to a vehicle on Russell Street, Wānaka.

ON 26 MARCH police received reports of a French hunter unlawfully entering a property in the Upper Dingle hunting block. Enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the ID of that unlawful hunter.

POLICE RECEIVED REPORTS of a vehicle being driven poorly on 24 March, with alleged near misses with tra c while driving north towards Wānaka on Cardrona Valley Road. The 27-year-old female driver and vehicle was located on Ardmore Street. She underwent EBA procedures and a BST result or 600mcg/L was recorded.

A SINGLE VEHICLE INCIDENT occurred at about 4.00pm on 26 March when a 31-year-old male was driving his vehicle on Cardrona Valley Road towards Queenstown. He navigated a right-hand corner, lost control and collided with the steel barrier. This incident caused minor damage to the vehicle, and fortunately there were no injuries to the occupants.

LATER THE SAME DAY at 9.45pm police were noti ed of a motor vehicle incident that occurred on Cardrona Valley Road. The 23-year-old male driver lost control on a corner and collided with a bank, causing the vehicle to ip and roll several times before landing on the roof. Given what happened, it was again fortunate that no one received any injuries.

A 50-YEAR-OLD MALE WAS ARRESTED on 27 March following an assault outside Post O ce Lane, Wānaka. He appeared in Queenstown District Court on 30 March.

A 27-YEAR-OLD FEMALE was stopped on Sam John Place, Hāwea on 28 March and underwent EBA procedures. She returned a disappointing high breath testing result of 905mcg/L.

AT JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT on Sunday, 29 March, a 32-year-old male was the driver of a motor vehicle on Dunmore Street. He underwent EBA procedures and returned a reading of 485mcg/L.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO ASSIST Fire and Emergency New Zealand with a car re on Crown Range on 29 March.

March Update from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade

Our siren normally doesn’t sound at night. When it does, it either means a fault in our turnout system… or it means that the first person to reach the station has forgotten to press the button to silence it. Apologies if we woke you last month, the perpetrator has been fined.

We had 24 calls in March, up from 19 in February. This month car crashes, supporting the ambos and smoke alarms made up most of our calls. Also, please remember we’re still in a prohibited fire season so no brazier fires in the backyard yet.

Our favourite call involved a hapless chef who burnt his beef cheeks at Aspiring Lifestyle Village. Thankfully everyone was safe, and we left happily with a box of chocolate muffins and carrot cake from a far more capable chef — thank you! The eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted that we have a third truck. We have borrowed it for Easter to allow us to cover Warbirds without reducing the number of trucks in town. They’ve said we have to give it back.

SEA2YOU IS LOCATED at the Hawea Community Centre every Wednesday from 3.30-4.00pm.
