Best in Show: the Heart of the Wānaka A&P Pet Parade

Few people know the Dogs & Pets Parade at the Wānaka A&P Show quite like Judy Young. A familiar and much-loved face in the Pet Parade Ring, Judy has been involved since 1995, when she first stepped in as a steward - only to be promptly handed the Marshall’s role not long after. More than 30 years on, she’s still there, clipboard in hand, helping guide one of the Show’s most heartwarming events. What keeps her coming back each year is the children. “You can always tell the ones who truly love their pets,” she says. “They feed them, groom them, and you see that bond the moment they step into the ring.”

And no two years are ever the same. From a oneeyed rat named Matilda to a stick insect called Harry - and even an “invisible pet” in a jar - Judy has seen it all. Add in the occasional excited labrador, curious terrier or a small child being enthusiastically led by a much larger dog, and the ring is never short of laughs.

Now a true family affair, with husband John as steward and daughter Melissa judging in recent years, Judy says the Pet Show – this year sponsored

by Vetlife - is all about fun, confidence and community. Classes cover everything from farm favourites and ponies to unusual and caged pets, plus a range of dog categories - all culminating in the overall Best Pet.

A milestone summer for Wao’s Better Events Collective

It’s been a milestone summer for the Better Events Collective – a dedicated workstream of Wao Aotearoa supporting event organisers to reduce waste and rethink what great events can look like in our region.

On 24 January, The Valley Festival made its debut, welcoming 3,000 people to a standout day of premium Kiwi music, world-class wines, gourmet food and craft brews – all delivered during a rare fine-weather window in an otherwise rain-soaked season. Behind the scenes, Festival Director Nathan White of Otago Events Planning helped lead a bold sustainability approach, proudly delivering the event as single-use-free.

A full fleet of reusable service ware was rolled out, including coffee cups, wine glasses, bowls, plates and pizza boards. In partnership with Without Waste, the team achieved an impressive 92% diversion from landfill – surpassing the 90% benchmark that defines a zero-waste event. Over the course of the day, DISHrupt washed 4,044 reusable items, preventing

more than 200 kilograms of disposable waste from heading to Victoria Flats landfill.

Meanwhile in Wānaka, the 20th anniversary of Challenge Wānaka brought together more than 3,000 athletes and thousands of supporters for a record-setting celebration of triathlon. As part of its journey toward zero waste by 2030, Event Director Jane Sharman and the Challenge Wānaka Trust celebrated the successful removal of single-use cups from aid stations and the finish line. Athletes brought their own hydration vessels, with refill stations and bottle exchanges supporting the shift.

Together, these events signal strong progress and a growing commitment to sustainable events across our region, led through Wao’s Better Events Collective workstream.

Revamped social hub at the Wānaka A&P Show

As the Wānaka A&P Show continues to evolve, so too does the way it brings people together. This year, the Show team has refreshed and redesigned a well-loved area behind the Show office and pavilion, enhancing a space where generations have gathered to reconnect, relax and socialise once the ribbons are awarded and the business of the day is done.

Enter the Scapegrace Show Bar, a thoughtfully revamped social hub created to extend the Show experience into the early evening, offering quality beverages, live music and classic Kiwi hospitality as the sun goes down.

“Shows have always been about more than what happens in the ring,” says General Manager Jane Stalker. “They are about catching up, sharing stories and spending time together. The Scapegrace Show Bar enhances a space people already know and love, giving them an even better place to unwind and enjoy each other’s company.”

Set in the familiar space behind the Show office, the Scapegrace Show Bar offers a relaxed atmosphere and a carefully curated music line-up. Open until 8.00pm each evening, it provides a natural transition

from daytime activity into a laid-back evening session.

Live music is a key part of the experience, with locals Sean Tinker, Andew Logie and Dirty Money Duo taking the stage from 2.00pm daily. On Friday evening, the soulful songs and storytelling of Jenny Mitchell features, followed by the indie pop sounds of Avalanche City on Saturday evening.

The entertainment has been selected to complement the setting, upbeat, approachable and ideal for lingering conversations over a drink.

By refreshing this long-standing gathering place, the Show team is reinforcing the event’s role as a place of connection, not just competition. It remains a space to pause, reflect on the day and enjoy good music, good company and the enduring spirit of the Show.

The Hāwea Community Association and QLDC will combine forces to present a family-focused, free afternoon at the Hāwea Domain.

CRIME LINE

A 41-YEAR-OLD IS DUE to appear in the Queenstown Court this week for driving with an excess blood alcohol content and careless use of a motor vehicle. In the early hours of 25 January 2026, emergency services attended a single vehicle crash on Aubrey Road near the intersection of Mount Linton Avenue, where a vehicle has failed to negotiate a corner crashing into a power pole. Alcohol was suspected as a contributing factor, leading to a blood sample being obtained from the driver. The sample returned a result over 140 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, nearly three times over the legal limit.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD DUNEDIN resident is due to appear in the Queenstown Court this week for driving with an excess breath alcohol content. On the morning of 2 January 2026, a vehicle was stopped by Police following a driving complaint on Lake Hawea-Albert Town Road, the young driver underwent breath test procedures returning a result of 900 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The alcohol limit for anyone driving, under 20 years of age, is zero!

A 24-YEAR-OLD FEMALE is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court this week for concealing over $70 of grocery items in her bag and leaving the New World supermarket on Dunmore Street without paying for them.

ONE PERSON WAS ARRESTED and two spoken to this week in relation to stealing a vehicle from outside a Totara Terrace residence. Early morning, Sunday 22 February, the three opportunists located a vehicle parked on the roadside with the keys in the ignition. Subsequently the trio have taken the vehicle on a two-hour joy ride around Wānaka and Hāwea. During their jaunt, the group have taken turns driving, deliberately running into road signs, a letterbox, rubbish bins, and a tree. The vehicle was recovered by Police the same day. There are no persons outstanding in relation to this incident. Police are seeking any information from residents who have found any unexplained damage which they believe may have result from a vehicle collision Sunday morning between 1am - 3am. Please contact 105 quoting file number 260222/4322. Police are urging locals and visitors to the area to lock their vehicles when left unattended.

A 32-YEAR-OLD LOCAL resident was airlifted to Christchurch Central Hospital this week suffering serious injuries resulting from a motor vehicle accident on Crown Range Road. At about 8.30am Tuesday 25 February, whilst traveling south out of the Cardrona Township, the male has left the road after completing an overtaking manoeuvre. Police are seeking any information, including dashcam footage relating to the incident – Contact 105 quoting file number 260224/2596.

February Update from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade

It’s been a busy month for our brigade, with crews responding to a wide range of incidents across the area. One of our fastest turnouts occurred when a car fire spread into nearby vegetation— fortunately, we were already on the road heading to a training scenario when the call came in. If you need us, Monday at 7.30pm is the magic time!

Actually, we sort of had an even quicker response to a car crash when one of our own crew members happened to be in a vehicle that was hit.

Several house fire callouts kept us on our toes,

including one where a neighbour’s early call prevented a far more serious outcome, another involved a close call with an errant BBQ placed too close to the eaves.

We’re grateful for the community’s continued support. This month’s reminders: check your smoke alarms, empty the lint from your dryer, check your BBQ before you light it, chew your food, and please—replace the gas pump hose before driving off!
