Wānaka is gearing up for an evening of raw honesty, resilience, and straight-talk when Bush, Balls and Breaking Barriers comes to town on Saturday, 28 February.
Hosted by Aspiring Rotary, the event features a powerful line-up of speakers led by former Black Cap Lou Vincent, who will share his story of losing everything, hitting rock bottom, and rebuilding his life.
Matt Chisholm will MC, keeping the yarns flowing, while Glen Thurston shares his experiences navigating the mental health system, including the challenges, frustrations, and breakthroughs along the way. Kathryn Wright brings stories of pushing boundaries and breaking barriers in demanding environments.
This event is for the wider rural community and anyone drawn to uplifting, meaningful stories. It creates a relaxed space where conversations around mental health, often the hardest to start, feel easier. The night will feature an auction with prizes up for grabs, raising additional funds for Mental Hunts. There will be a bar and food will be available. Doors open from 5.00pm, with the programme running 5.30 –10.00pm. This event is raising important funds for Mental Hunts, supporting mental health initiatives that make a real difference locally.
Please note: Discussions will include mental health challenges, including suicide. Recommended for ages 16+. Parental discretion advised. Tickets are $35 via Humanitix: events.humanitix.com/ bush-balls-and-breaking-barriers/tickets

Each Tuesday and Thursday morning people just like you get together to create stuff used by community organisations, schools and families throughout the Upper Clutha.
Volunteering enables each of us to give back to our community, connect with others and get out of the house.
We build or repair almost anything. Some of us arrive at the Workshop with skills and experience, some of us don’t. Each of us can contribute. Working alongside each other we can learn and make a difference.
We use donated and recycled materials. We are always on the lookout for solid wood and building materials. Stuff that may be lying in the shed or around the back.
The team is open to all. Just bring an attitude to get involved.
The Wānaka Community Workshop would not survive without the support from Queenstown Lakes District Council, the Otago Community Trust and local businesses such as ITM.
The Workshop is here for you. Come along to the

Cocktails, straw bales, cowboy boots and black-tie suits – the Three Parks Town Meets Country Charity Ball will have it all.
Taking place on Saturday, March 14, the ball will benefit Te Kura O Take Kārara school – future-proofing playground equipment and extracurricular activities.
Friends of Take Kārara School president Nicole Foulds said the ball was the perfect way for people to cap off a fun-filled couple of days at the Wānaka A&P Show and continue the town-meets-country fun.
“With the show bringing so many people into town, we loved the idea of giving visitors a glamorous way to finish the weekend,” Mrs Foulds said.
“A night where you’ll see farmers in bow ties, townies in boots, all having a fantastic time together for a good cause.”
The charity ball offers a rare chance to dance beneath the rafters of the privatelyowned Vintage Tractor Garage on Wanaka’s Ballantyne Rd, which will be transformed into a glittering barn-style ballroom for one night only.
It will feature a banquet-style meal, entertainment by award-winning country act Jenny Mitchell and Queenstown party band LA Social, plus live and silent auctions.

16 Sentinel Drive - We can’t speak highly enough of Gavin Vize and Bel White from Harcourts Wanaka. They recently sold our property in Lake Hawea while we were overseas, and the entire process could not have been smoother. Their communication was exceptional -they kept us informed every step of the way, no matter the time di erence. The attention to detail, professionalism, and genuine care they showed gave us complete confidence throughout. Their knowledge and experience really shone through, and it made what could have been a stressful situation feel e ortless. We’re so grateful for their hard work and couldn’t recommend them more highly.

23 Lakeside Road - Throughout a complicated process to market, Gavin and Bel were incredibly supportive, nothing was any problem, including inspections, tenant assist, cleaning and clearing of the units. As I live in Australia I was unable to do this and Gavin and Bel stepped up to help. In addition, the marketing was professional and successful, resulting in a quick sale at an agreeable price. Nothing was too much trouble and communication always polite,

Wanaka’s rapid growth in recent years has brought vibrancy and opportunity to the Upper Clutha region. Yet behind the thriving town centre, some families continue to face immense challenges that growth alone cannot solve.
Anglican Family Care’s Central Otago/Queenstown Lakes team, led by Team Leader Michelle Tukana and three dedicated social workers, work alongside parents and caregivers through the Home-based Family Support Service and Family Start Programme. Based at the Wānaka Community Hub on McDougall Street and Alexandra Community House on Centennial Avenue, the team offers confidential, non-judgemental support.
Their point of difference: visiting families across Central Otago | Queenstown Lakes in their own homes, providing tailored support at a pace that works best for them.
The team collaborates with schools, health providers, and other agencies to help parents manage the pressures of raising tamariki in a region where housing, heating, and food insecurity are common struggles. Many families are also grappling with parenting challenges, mental health and

wellbeing concerns, whānau harm, and substance abuse, often made worse by isolation from natural supports such as extended family or community networks. These issues have a profound and unmistakable impact on family wellbeing.
“Our goal is to ensure whānau and tamariki are supported, resilient and are connected and thriving within our communities,” says Michelle. “We walk alongside parents offering support, guidance and encouragement as they strengthen their families through life’s challenges.”
As one parent put it: “The local connection with the community was essential to me, making me feel that I could relate to the support being offered.”
Over the past year, the team has supported 80 whānau and their tamariki, working with families for an average of 25.8 hours each, a testament to their ongoing commitment to empower whānau.
