STARS IN YOUR EYES TURNS 35 Musical magic returns to Wānaka for five unforgettable nights Underneath the wigs, costumes and stage lights of Stars in Your Eyes, familiar Wānaka faces will transform into music icons. The 32nd instalment of the town’s much-loved talent show takes over the Lake Wānaka Centre from Tuesday, 22 to Saturday, 26 September. This year, a record 17 acts promise plenty of surprises. One of the night’s great joys is seeing familiar faces from the supermarket or school gate transformed on stage. Nobody knows who’s behind each character until they step into the spotlight, making the mystery – and the depth of local talent – all the more exciting. Behind the scenes, this year’s show is steered by director Janine Weatherly, alongside musical director David Baker, production manager Katy Rowden and choreographer Hannah Gillespie. 100 volunteers give up their time for weeks
beforehand, from wardrobe, hair and makeup through to set building, stage crew, dancers, front of house and bar teams, and the talented house band. “The passion people bring to a performance can be as impressive as talent,” Musical Director David Baker said. “Every year we wonder how we’ll top the last, and I think we’ll do it again.” Organisers Wanaka Musicians Inc. estimate the show has ploughed close to $300,000 back into music education across the Upper Clutha over the past three decades. Tickets are $60 and go on sale at 7.00am on Thursday, 3 September. Book early, as the show has a habit of selling out within days. Visit wanakastars.org/tickets
