Wanaka’s Community Christmas Tree The Wanaka Community has banded together yet again for a great cause – Wanaka’s first 24ft pre-lit, pre-decorated Community Christmas Tree. After 12 months of fundraising we have purchased the tree on behalf of the Wanaka Community. She will be presented in all her glory Monday 1st December, with a ‘Lighting of The Tree’ Ceremony from 7pm – 9.30pm on the Wanaka Hotel lawn area with Christmas carols before the lighting. We are honoured to have our own Sir Tim Wallis light the tree for us for the very first time. My vision for the tree is to bring together
not only our local community, but the visitors we also attract. I see it as a meeting place for friends and family to enjoy a picnic, a gathering place for the young and old, a place to make that ever so special Christmas wish – whatever it may be!! Keeping in the Christmas Spirit, Wanaka will also have its first Community Santa’s Grotto for all to visit from the 12th–21st December on Brownston St, opposite Cinema Paradiso. In the last week local Police have dealt with over 20 driving complaints in the area. Most of these complaints relate to vehicles crossing the centre line and dangerous overtaking. Please be careful wherever you may be driving and if you see anyone that is putting others at risk ring *555. In the early hours of Friday morning someone has set fire to toilet paper in the Pembroke Park toilet block. Please do not abuse these public facilities and only use them for what they are there for. Over the weekend DOC signs on Mount-Aspiring Road have been spray painted. This causes unnecessary costs to DOC for the graffiti to be removed. In the early hours of Sunday morning Police apprehended a 52 year old female for driving with excess breath alcohol of 723mcg. On Sunday afternoon Police attended a non-injury crash on Cardrona Valley Road where the driver got caught in shingle on the edge of the road, over-corrected and hit a fence. Police received a complaint regarding a person attempting to get into a backyard. Security lights and a dog have scared the person away. This is a timely reminder to keep doors and vehicles locked to stop opportunist offending occurring. A reminder with children still at school for a few more weeks to reduce your speed around schools and surrounding streets and watch for buses picking up and dropping off children around town. When passing a stopped school bus you must slow to 20 km/h when overtaking. A few drivers have received tickets during the week for passing the school bus at high speed. Don’t get caught out.
