Lindis Pass Conservation Group has terrifically hard-working people carrying out sterling work in the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve. Like many volunteer groups, they are few rather than many. The same core people turn up to workdays year after year and they are not getting any younger! The LPCG needs a big infusion of younger, stronger, committed volunteers, or it will fade away. If you love the Lindis, with its clean, beautiful, outrageously photogenic landscapes of susurrating tall tussock, please think about taking a break from your daily toil for a day of restorative mountain tussock-bathing, and to do some good work on the Pass. The Group has been warring against the highly invasive Russell Lupin. The policy is “No
flowers, no seeds”. In this season of unprecedented growth however, this has proved hard to achieve.

NZTA has done a good job of keeping the highway verges clear, and the DOC tends to the Conservation Areas on either side. The Scenic Reserve is largely looked after by our volunteers, and you can thank them for the "clean" reserve landscape - no smothering swathes of lupin, no bristling matrix of sweet brier, no build-up of travellers’ rubbish lying on the roadsides, and no wilding conifers, pest broom and gorse. We would love (and NEED) more volunteers. The next scheduled weekend workday is 5 February. This week’s Crimeline begins with our officers, accompanied with many of our local volunteers and supporting organisations attending a fatal vehicle crash in the early hours of Monday morning. It’s a sobering reminder to the fragility of life and something that we often take for granted. The investigation into the circumstance is something that is obviously underway, so for now our thoughts are with those effected by the tragedy.

A further water rescue on Lake Wanaka occurred, and we were only on Tuesday. This amounted to a full response from the Coastguard to a suspected capsized boat. A special thanks goes out to the crews of local boaties who heard the call on channel 66 and assisted with the search.

Unfortunately, there are still some disappointing results popping up with many people off to court to explain themselves to the judge. We would like to give the Wanaka SAR team a big thanks, for a successful rescue from Mt Earnslaw last week. This resulted in a safe return with no injuries to anyone. Timely reminder that when you are planning a hike, to ensure you check weather reports and ensure you tell friends or family where you are going. As many have been enjoying the hotter days out on the lake, there have been various boating and swimming items handed in to the station as found property. If you are missing anything, please pop into the station.

I would like to thank all our dear family & friends for their wonderful support over the last few months since my arrival back in Wanaka without my beloved Jools. As you all know, my Jools loved life and lived it to the full. She made new friends just about every day and treasured her deep connections with best buddies. Unfortunately due to current Covid number restrictions, an all inclusive celebration of her life cannot be held at this time. In the interim there will be a small private function for family and friends held locally in early March. This will be by invitation only. However, rest assured a second event will be held later in the year when there is no restriction on the size of the gathering and we can all join together to remember & honour the amazing lady that was my Jools.
