Let’s Play will be a decadent evening at Peak Functions in Wanaka with top inspirational early childhood speaker Robin Christie talking about the importance of play. ’Play’ is the ‘work’ of young learners, the vehicle for experimentation and exploration, the most valuable technique for children to research how the world works and for discovering their place within it. As adults, we must keep playing also, not only to discover new skills and ideas, but to model to our children the importance of curiosity, of wonder, and of immense benefits of taking risks and making mistakes. Police attended a two vehicle crash in Luggate where one vehicle failed to give way at an intersection. This resulted in one driver receiving minor injuries. Police stress that drivers need to be vigilant at intersections and be sure the way is clear before pulling out. A driver was issued with a $600 infringement after being caught driving dangerously and doing a burn out at Eely Point. His excuse was that he got a bit excited - but agreed to pull his head in. This lad was very lucky not to be relieved of his vehicle for 28 days and have a visit to the judge to explain his actions. In relation to this type of driving, a number of black marks have been appearing on our roads just out of town. If you witness these types of incidents, could you please note the registration number and report it to police. You would both be saving the rate payer money in road repairs and possibly prevent an unnecessary crash. A brand new IPhone 6+ was stolen out of a room at one of our local backpackers. A male was arrested after he assaulted his ex-partner. He will be appearing at the Queenstown District Court on two charges. A man has been charged with wilful damage after he went on a drunken rampage around a local resort. He caused several hundred dollars’ worth of damage and gives new meaning to the phrase “throwing his toysâ€?. Over the weekend Police co-ordinated a search and rescue exercise that saw about 20 of our local landSAR volunteers put their skills to the test. Several Alpine Cliff Rescue squads from around the South Island also gathered at Treble Cone to share their knowledge and improve their skills. Thank you again to everyone who gave up their weekend to participate. Police will this week continue to focus on bicycle safety and issue tickets to anyone not wearing a helmet or who are not using lights at night. The Wanaka Hawea Reserves Trust is a Charitable Trust that has been established by locals to advocate for the protection and enhancement of reserves throughout the Upper Clutha basin. Trust members believe our Reserves are an important part of what makes our area special. We are concerned that decisions made affecting our Reserves are based more on expediency than on any long term vision. The Wanaka Water Sports Facility (WWSF) proposes to locate a large building on the foreshore of Lake Wanaka at the western end of Roys Bay. The 420 m2 building, being three times the size of the log cabin, would dominate an area Trust members, many residents and most visitors regard as having special natural qualities. To provide a clearing, for what is essentially a storage shed for the Rowing Club, a substantial cluster of 10 large trees would have to be cut down. These trees provide shade and shelter and along with the poplars they are an attractive feature of the area. Replacing these healthy trees with a large building, along with its associated activities, would compromise the public’s use and enjoyment of this very popular area. The Trust supports the Rowing Club in finding an appropriate site to store their boats. Alternative sites do exist and we believe these need to be reviewed and adopted. Allowing the first building on this part of the foreshore would set a very bad precedent. We consider it would be a tragedy to see this wonderful natural asset severely compromised. Lake Wanaka and its foreshore are designated as Outstanding Natural Landscape (ONL). The proposed building would be a highly visible structure, undermine Outstanding Natural Values and be totally inconsistent with the Lake Wanaka ONL. The proposed building is contrary to District Plan provisions and it would compromise natural and scenic values of the lake margin Recreation Reserve. The public have been lead to believe the WWSF proposal is a ‘done deal’; this is certainly not the case. Consent has not been granted and QLDC invites public submissions on the Resource Consent Application. We strongly urge the public to submit against this inappropriate development.
