WINTER WORRIES COME EARLY FOR LOCAL FAMILIES

Support the Community Link Cold Kids Campaign Submitted by David Gibbs

Winter hasn’t arrived yet, but for many in our community, the financial worry already has.

“We’re looking at the cost of firewood and wondering how we’ll get through winter,” one local parent shared.

So, in response to these growing pressures, Community Link Wanaka are launching our Cold Kids campaign a little earlier this year to help families get the support they need before the cold sets in.

At Community Link, we’re seeing more people reaching out, and much earlier than usual. Families are having to plan ahead, knowing the colder months will only add even more pressure.

With petrol prices now well over $3 a litre and interest rates rising, everyday costs, especially food and power are climbing rapidly. For many households, it’s not a single challenge, but a steady

build-up that’s becoming impossible to manage.

A local told us, “We’ve always managed in the past, but it’s really hard now. You start to worry about what winter will bring.”

We don’t believe any child should have to live through winter in a cold home, or miss school because they can’t stay warm, and get sick as a result.

That’s why the Cold Kids campaign exists, to help families stay warm, keep kids well, and support local businesses by helping staff show up, stay healthy, and be at their best this winter.

If you can, please support the Cold Kids campaign by donating at the Community Link website: communitylink.nz

Volunteer Treasurer sought for the Wānaka Arts committee

At Wānaka Arts we are looking for a volunteer Treasurer to join our committee. This role includes oversight of the finances for our annual Labour Weekend Art Exhibition, helping with budgeting, and working with our funding partner Leafcutter on grant applications.

Wānaka Arts is a non-profit organisation serving to promote and support our local arts and artists. We work to raise the profile of Wānaka as an arts destination by providing unique opportunities to exhibit and sell local artwork. As Treasurer you would help us keep an eye on our financial position, present simple reports to the committee, and support good financial practices. The Treasurer also receives invoices from suppliers, manages approvals, and forwards them to the bookkeeper for processing. This is a governance role rather than day-to-day bookkeeping, as we have a paid bookkeeper who

manages the accounts.

The time commitment is generally modest, including regular committee meetings with a bigger commitment over the period of the Labour Weekend Exhibition in October. If you have some financial experience or a good head for numbers and would enjoy supporting a vibrant local arts organisation, we would love to hear from you.

Please email artsco.wanaka.arts@gmail.com to express your interest.

Secure your digital future : Free talk for Wānaka seniors

SeniorNet members and all interested seniors in the community are invited to attend an informative and empowering presentation exploring the growing role of the digital world in our everyday lives. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends and neighbours along.

In today's fast-paced digital world, safeguarding your rights and legacy has never been more crucial – especially for us seniors navigating online services with confidence. Join us for an empowering presentation: 'Your digital world and the law'.

Janice Hughes of Aspiring Law will break down the often-confusing topic of digital signatures, explaining how they work and whether they are legally valid. She will also cover digital legal documents, including whether it is possible to write a will online, and what you need to know about Enduring Powers of Attorney and other important documents as you get older.

The session will also explore an increasingly relevant question: what happens to your digital life when you’re no longer able to manage it, or after you’re gone? From treasured photos and emails to online accounts, attendees will gain insight into how to manage their digital legacy – whether they want their online presence to live on or be carefully closed down – while staying within New Zealand’s legal framework around estates and privacy.

There will also be discussion around the role of

artificial intelligence in legal drafting, helping attendees understand what’s possible and what to be cautious of.

No technical expertise is required. This session is designed to be accessible, informative, and directly relevant, with clear advice and practical tips tailored specifically for Wānaka seniors.

Don’t miss this opportunity to better understand your digital world and take steps to secure your future.

WHAT: SeniorNet presentation 'Your digital world and the law.'

Breathe, move and reset: Yoga classes for a cause

A series of yoga classes being held in Wānaka is doubling as a meaningful fundraiser, with all proceeds going directly to the Mint Charitable Trust, which supports individuals with intellectual disabilities across the Upper Clutha region.

The classes are taking place in the tranquil surroundings of the Wilson & Dorset showroom, offering participants a calm and welcoming environment to focus on wellbeing while contributing to a local cause.

Running as a three-week block from March 18 to April 9, sessions are held on Wednesdays from 8.30–9.30am and Thursdays from 5.30–6.30pm. Each class is priced at $15, with every dollar raised going toward supporting the Trust’s ongoing work in the community, including the inaugral

Mint Ball 2026, which will be held at Edgewater later in the year.

Organisers say the initiative not only encourages physical and mental wellbeing, but also provides an accessible way for people to give back locally. The Thursday evening classes also include an optional social gathering afterwards at Verve, where participants can connect with others in a relaxed setting.

The sessions are led by Shannon Turner of Lionsgrace, and no booking is required. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, wear comfortable clothing, and come along with an open mind – knowing their attendance is helping make a positive difference in the community.

CRIME LINE

A VEHICLE ACCIDENT occurred on Cardrona Valley Road early on Tuesday, 10 March. The vehicle was travelling north from Queenstown to Wanaka. It would appear that the driver fell asleep, resulting in the vehicle leaving the road and colliding with a tree. The vehicle was written off and it was fortunate that the driver was not seriously hurt.

A VEHICLE WAS INTENTIONALLY DAMAGED overnight on 11/12 March. The vehicle was parked on Russell Street, Wānaka. Enquiries are ongoing.

BIG NUMBERS AT WANAKA A&P SHOW. The policing team at the venue were called upon for a few minor incidents, including locating and returning lost children to their parents. Police monitored crowd behaviour, and overall, the crowd was well behaved throughout the Show.

THAT BEING SAID, 1 arrest was made on Saturday, 14 March. Police were called to Gate 1 at the Wānaka A&P Show, responding to a male who was aggressive and abusive towards a member of the public. The male was arrested and removed from the venue as a result of his actions. The male was charged with Indecent Act with Intent to Insult and Resisting Police.

STEADY NUMBER OF DRIVING COMPLAINTS throughout the week including a fatal vehicle accident on the Lindis Pass on 15 March. Reports of vehicles crossing the centre line, unsafe passing manoeuvres and inconsiderate driving.

POLICE RESPONDED TO A VEHICLE COLLISION on Camphill Road bridge on 12 March. The driver managed to spectacularly position their vehicle perpendicular to the direction of the road, in the middle of the bridge.

A 59-YEAR-OLD FEMALE was stopped on Anderson Road on 12 March. She was issued an Infringement Offence Notice (ION) for returning a 299-mcg result.

A 28-YEAR-OLD MALE was stopped on Wanaka Luggate Highway, on 13 March he underwent EBA procedures and returned a 330 mcg result. He was issued an Infringement Offence Notice.

A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC PHONED Police on Friday, 13 March to report dangerous driving behaviour. This was one of the busiest days on our local network. The informant advised that there was heavy traffic both ways and the offending vehicle was overtaking on blind corners, overtaking on double yellow lines, and overtaking into oncoming traffic. The vehicle was located by Police. Enquiries are ongoing, including obtaining any dashcam footage.

WANAKA POLICE AND LANDSAR were called to an incident on the Skyline track on Tuesday 10 March. The visitor to NZ succumbed to his injuries as a result of encountering trouble in the tricky terrain on one part of the track. Police and Wanaka LandSAR Alpine Cliff Rescue responded to manage that incident. Big thanks to Wanaka LandSAR volunteers, who are exceptional.

ANOTHER REMINDER TO SECURE any kayaks and dinghys that are stored near a lake or river. A name and / or phone number on it would be helpful. We’ve had a couple of these items located floating in waterways in recent months and have been unable to identify the owner. A full scale LandSAR response could be avoided.

Police Non-Emergency. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (Ten-Five) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (Triple-One). 105 Police Non-Emergency | New Zealand Police.

The QLDC are proposing ‘double digit’ rates rises. Rates increases may be inevitable, and I recognise the pressures Council is facing. However, can they be lower?

I’m encouraging Council to review departmental staffing and expenditure, and look for efficiencies where possible – before further burdening ratepayers.
