Council Snippets Drop-in Session Do you have a bright idea about how we could grow and diversify the local economy? Your councillors would love to hear it. They’re running a drop-in session today (Wednesday 24 September) from 4-6pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre. And tonight Shaping our Future is holding an economic forum, same venue from 7pm. Spring Time can be Flood Time Locals know that when the spring rains wash away the snow, our lakes and rivers rise. QLDC is working with the Otago Regional Council on our annual flood awareness programme in early October. This year there will be an information evening in Wanaka (6 October, 5-7pm) on the lakefront. And if you’re have a business in the CBD then you’ll be meeting some of our staff on their walk around the streets that are within the flood zone. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information nearer the time.
Wanaka Pool Update The Wanaka Pool is on track to reopen very soon following work to strengthen the building so that it meets the earthquake code. Once the structural work is finished, we’ll be carrying out the annual maintenance that was originally scheduled for early July. The final job is to clean the facility and reheat the pool. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for the announcement about the exact reopening day.
A new pool for Wanaka? The Council has deferred deciding when and where to build a new facility, including a learners pool, and at what cost. Starting in mid October, QLDC will be consulting the Wanaka Ward residents and ratepayers on their preferences. This is not a repeat of previous consultation on the Wanaka Sports Facility, which is going ahead at Three Parks. It will relate specifically to swimming facilities. The $10 offer is aimed at encouraging owners to comply with the law, which requires all dogs first registered after 1 July 2006 to be microchipped as well as registered.
