INVESTING IN FUTURE FRESHWATER LEADERS IN OTAGO

Wai Wānaka’s Studentships Programme to support the next generation A new initiative from WAI Wānaka is set to support the next generation of freshwater leaders, with the launch of its Studentships Programme. Developed in partnership with the University of Otago - Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka and Lincoln University – Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki, the programme will fund paid summer internships and postgraduate research focused on real-world freshwater challenges in Otago. The studentships aim to bridge the gap between academic study and community action, enabling students to directly contribute to projects that support the health of local lakes, rivers and catchments. From fieldwork and monitoring to data analysis and community engagement, students will play an active role in delivering practical solutions. While the first studentships will be awarded in 2026, WAI Wānaka and its university partners share a vision

to build a lasting programme that supports students year after year. Growing a dedicated fund over time, will create ongoing opportunities for emerging freshwater scientists and researchers. WAI Wānaka says the programme reflects a growing need to invest in both science and people to protect freshwater for future generations. Community support will be key to the programme’s success, with donations helping to fund scholarships and research costs. By connecting students, researchers and the local community, the initiative is designed to strengthen freshwater ecosystems while building skills, knowledge and leadership.
