Introducing the Wanaka Community Patrol Committee: Chairperson - Steve Worley, Treasurer/ Deputy Chair - Mick Hollyer, Secretary - Una Connolly, Health & Safety - Shelley Collins, Training - Adrian Page, Paul Tamati (youth matters), Margaret Barrow (fund raising), Doug Brenssell (other matters), Police Community Liaison Officer - Mike Thomas, Committee Member - Bruce Hebbard. The response to the initial public meeting was outstanding with many different backgrounds and skill sets wanting to volunteer by assisting the Police in their efforts to keep the Community safe and reduce criminal activity. The Wanaka Community Patrol (WCP) has formed a Committee to get the project

underway. The first job on the to do list is to officially become affiliated with Community Patrols of New Zealand, once that process is completed the applications for Patrollers will be submitted. Fundraising for a dedicated (sign written) patrol car and necessary equipment is next on the agenda. Night Patrols are hoping to commence 1st July 2014.

I am happy to report that with the large influx of people for Warbirds over Wanaka there was little disorder or problems. This goes to show they are a good crowd and are simply here to enjoy the show. Mandy Deans, Ed Taylor, all the volunteers and personnel involved did a great job in managing the show. Police are appealing for a witness who took a video clip of a dangerous driver in Makarora on Thursday the 10th April 2014. The dangerous driver went on to assault a police officer and was found to be drink driving. The witness showed the clip to a road worker in the Makarora area. If the witness could make contact with us it would be appreciated. On Saturday police had to deal with a very intoxicated male on the lake front. He had been drinking port most of the day. He had to be detained in police cells until he sobered up. A male was arrested at a check point on Saturday after an officer found cannabis and a white substance in his car, he was also found in possession of an offensive weapon that was seized. He is facing a charge of possession of cannabis and there is a possibility of other charges looming. A number of youths were spoken to after reports of them being on the Library roof. This may be taken further if there is any damage to the building. Good work from Senior Constable Mclean when he located an intoxicated driver at 08:00 am on Kane Road on Sunday Morning. The driver had been at a party until the early hours of the morning the night before. When he was put on the evidential breath testing machine he blew 617 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. He now faces a court appearance. This is a stark reminder to the perils of driving after a big night out. If in doubt don’t drive. So in total 3 drink drivers have been apprehended over the Easter weekend. On Monday evening we had to deal with a male at a local restaurant who did not have enough money to pay. He was convinced to go and get some money and pay like every body else.
