CONTRIBUTE TO MARINE DIVERSITY Submitted by: Colin Townsend
Plants and animals are travelling long distances and benefitting from big geological disturbances. The Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society brings leading thinkers, highly regarded in their field of knowledge and expertise, to talk about their work. Each year, ten eminent national speakers are included in the programme. Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides - large physical changes to the Earth - are often seen as destructive, but they can also open exciting opportunities for biological change. When one population is wiped out, another will take its place. This talk will look at how plants and animals respond to large-scale dynamic changes in the environment, and how long-distance dispersal is critical for them to be able to grab new opportunities. Ceridwen Fraser’s research focuses on the dynamics of southern marine and polar ecosystems. Her research combines
genetics and ecology with earth sciences (such as oceanography and geology) to understand the processes that influence biodiversity. Ceridwen’s teams has helped reveal how plants and animals respond to large disturbances and have important implications for management of biodiversity into the future, particularly in the face of rapid climate change. The impact of Ceridwen’s work has been recognised by several national and international awards and fellowships, including ACT Scientist of the Year, the Australian Academy of Science Fenner Medal, and a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship. Come on a journey, at 6.00pm on Friday, 25 April to the Presbyterian Community Centre, 94 Tenby Street, with ticks travelling on penguins, bugs and seaweed rafting to Antarctica, and tiny critters weathering ice ages in volcanic caves beneath the Antarctic ice sheet.
