Featuring some of New Zealand’s top musicians Submitted by Wanaka Concert Society
If you’re looking for something a little different to do in Wānaka this April, A Century of Tango might be just the ticket. Performed by the Aotango Quintet, this concert offers a relaxed but richly musical journey through the world of tango.
The group performs in the classic quintet style made famous by Argentinian maestro Ástor Piazzolla, traversing the evolution of tango from beloved classics such as Ángel Villoldo’s El Choclo, and Gerardo Matos Rodríguez’s La Cumparsita to the revolutionary nuevo tango compositions of Piazzolla.
The quintet itself brings together some of New Zealand’s top musicians – Andrew Beer (violin), Lorelle McNaughton (piano), Gordon Hill (double bass), Sam Swindells (guitar), and Grayson Masefield (accordion).
The concert takes place on Saturday, 25 April at 7.30pm at the Lake Wānaka Centre. Tickets are $40 for adults, and school students can attend for free. Tickets are on sale now at at Gifted Design Store, (cash sales), Wānaka isite, book online at eventfinda.co.nz or cash door sales on the night.
If you want to make an evening of it, Amigos, right next door to the venue, is offering a special preconcert menu. Book your concert tickets and book a table, phone 03 443 7872 and mention ‘Wanaka Concert Society.’
Whether you’re a longtime tango fan or just curious to hear something new, this will be an enjoyable, easygoing night out with great music.

Beach clean up for Earth Day
This year's Earth Day is marked on Wednesday, 22 April. The day is an internationally recognised event that has been celebrated for 56 years. This year's theme, Our Power, Our Planet, highlights a simple truth: meaningful environmental change starts with everyday actions, led by communities, educators, workers, and whānau caring for places they live and work.
To mark the day, WAI Wānaka is hosting a beach clean-up at the Wānaka Lakefront from 10.00am to 11.30am. Registration opens at 9.55am, with volunteers meeting by the wharf – look out for the WAI flags.
Bring your own gloves, wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, and bring along friends and whānau. Together, we’ll help remove rubbish from the beach before it finds its way into the lake.
A big thank you to Big Fig for providing delicious treats and to Cinema Paradiso for donating movie passes, which will be given away at the event.

Free venue offered for Pink Ribbon Teas in May
As Pink Ribbon Month approaches this May, the community is being invited to come together in support of breast cancer awareness – with a special opportunity to host events at no cost.
The Venue Wānaka is offering its space free of charge to individuals, workplaces, schools and community groups who would like to host a Pink Ribbon morning or afternoon tea.
The initiative aims to make it easier for people to take part, removing one of the common barriers to organising an event. Pink Ribbon events play an important role in raising awareness of breast cancer and encouraging early detection, while also providing a chance for people to connect and support one another.
Hosts are encouraged to bring their own creativity to their gatherings, whether through baking, decorations, or sharing personal stories. Events can be as simple or as elaborate as desired, with every contribution helping to shine a light on an issue that affects many families.
With May just around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan an event and be part of this meaningful community initiative.
WHAT: Free venue hire for Pink Ribbon events in May.

Appeal returns as Foodbank braces for rising demand
New World Wanaka and New World Three Parks are once again backing the Community Link Foodbank through New World’s nationwide Family2Family programme, helping ensure local families can access essential food and household items when they need them most.
Family2Family is built on a simple idea, locals helping locals. Shoppers are invited to fill a special Family2Family bag with non perishable, foodbank friendly items, or purchase a $20 pre filled bag either in store or online. All donated goods are delivered directly to the Foodbank, ensuring support stays within the local community.
This year, donations through Family2Family are more critical than ever. With fuel prices continuing to rise, many local families are finding their weekly budgets stretched to breaking point, and demand for food support is expected to surge in the months ahead especially as winter approaches.
“With fuel and living costs rising, we’re seeing more local families needing support,” says Foodbank lead Nicola Plumridge. “Family2Family donations are vital in helping us keep shelves stocked with everyday essentials.”
22nd
Last year, the Foodbank received 689 parcels through the generosity of shoppers supporting this initiative. With winter approaching, the hope is to see that same level of community support once again.
Every donated bag helps provide financial relief
and practical support for families facing some tough times.

CRIME LINE
POLICE RESPONDED TO two separate family harm incidents on 8 April. Both resulted in the issuing of Police Safety Orders. Support services and contact information can be sought through Help for family violence, New Zealand Police or Family Services Directory.
POLICE RESPONDED TO a commercial property on Ardmore Street on 9 April, where staff had excluded a verbally abusive and aggressive male from their property. Staff took proactive action and did the right thing by calling Police to assist with deescalating the situation.
POLICE WERE CALLED to a vehicle v deer incident on Makarora-Lake Hawea Road, at 9.00pm on 11 April.
A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC reported a rental vehicle repeatedly crossing the centre line on 6 April. The passenger recorded footage of the vehicle which included an unrestrained child in the rear seat. The report and the footage enabled police to take enforcement action with the offending driver.
A 34-YEAR-OLD FEMALE was stopped on Alison Ave, Albert Town and underwent EBA procedures on 6 April. The driver returned a high reading of 848mcg and will appear in court as a result.
A 26-YEAR-OLD FEMALE was stopped on Te Awa Road, Albert Town and underwent EBA procedures on 10 April 2026. She returned a high reading of 749mcg.
TWO SEPARATE PARTIES were caught out in the Young Valley on Monday, 13 April. Despite having all the right gear, they were caught out by the weather. The parties encountered heavy snow fall. One party used their InReach to let family know they were in trouble. Police and RCC were notified a short time later and helicopter and LandSAR rescue team were sent in to retrieve the parties.
AS WE TRANSITION into cooler weather, if you are venturing into our diverse terrain - be on your game as far as preparation goes. In recent weeks we have had a steady call for Search and Rescue teams responding to beacon activations. Beacons call for a full emergency response as we are often unable to determine what has happened or communicate directly with the effected party. Police remind people to:
• Choose the tight ‘track’ and trip for YOUR ability
• Check weather forecasts, check them, and then check them again
• Pack essential safety gear and dress appropriately for NZ alpine conditions
• Know how to navigate confidently
• Communicate your plans and intentions
• Know what to do if you are caught out in weather or faced with an emergency
• Consider your party and their ability
• Pack nutritious, lightweight food, and pack shelter
• Take care of yourself and others
POLICE REMIND FIREARMS LICENCE holders heading out hunting to ensure they are up to speed on firearms safety, and to lead by example. Police want every hunter to have a safe and enjoyable roar, this means making sure you continue to be vigilant about firearms safety. The last thing we want is hunters facing serious injuries, or worse –because they weren’t being careful with their firearm at all times.
Plan safe, act safe, stay safe.
Police Non-Emergency. Use the online report options to make a nonemergency report, or you can call us on 105 (Ten-Five) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (Triple-One).

John Bertrand Collectables Buying in Wanaka and Central Otago Next Week
Once again, the gold and collectables buyers from Wellington company John Bertrand Collectables are visiting Wanaka and Central Otago next week. Mr Tony Grant from the company says, “If you are downsizing or wanting to dispose of things because they no longer serve any purpose to you or your family bring them in”. “Next week will be a great opportunity to have any items you want to sell assessed by our buyers” said Mr Grant. Particularly wanted are Gold and Silver (in any of its forms) and Collectables such as Coins, Banknotes, War Medals, Old Wind-up Watches and other interesting Small Collectables.
“We are keen buyers, especially of the items in the list below” said Mr Grant. “Nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy buying 1 item as we are buying 1,000 items” he said. The buyers will be in Wanaka and Central Otago next week. (see details below). As Tony Grant points out “If you are in doubt about any items you may wish to sell, bring them along for an instant appraisal.”
Gold & Silver At Very High Prices
Over the last couple of years, we have seen a sharp increase in the price of precious metals. The gold price in New Zealand is still at historically high levels. So, gather up all your unwanted items and make an appointment to see the buyers. Tony Grant says “We can buy gold items in all forms, including Jewellery (Rings, Chains, Brooches etc.), Coins (Sovereigns and the like), Alluvial (River Gold), virtually anything, even Gold Teeth! We also need all Sterling Silver including Cups, Tea Services, Cutlery and Old Coins” he said.
Interesting Small Collectables Wanted
The buyers from John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd, visiting Wanaka and Central Otago next week, are happy to look at any interesting items, for example vintage pocket and wristwatches such as Rolex, Men’s Omega, Breitling and gold watches etc. Also wanted, pre 1950’s picture postcards, Maori and Pacific artefacts, old fountain pens and other small antique or historical items.
“If you have something unusual which you would like to sell, please bring it into one of our venues, we would like the chance to at least have a look at it” said Tony Grant, buyer for the Company. “We will consider anything which may be of interest to a collector” he said.
Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes
Early New Zealand Banknotes dated before 1932 are currently fetching big money! This is according to Mr Tony Grant, author of the John Bertrand New Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue
Mr Grant is in Wanaka and Central Otago next week on a buying trip for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd and would be very keen to see any of these issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any undamaged Ten Shilling or One Pound
Collectors Need War Medals
Currently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars. General service medals from both the First and Second World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group of medals has any special award for bravery such as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure what to do with. These are better off in the hands of collectors who will look after them. We will be happy to look at any war medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.
banknote from a New Zealand trading bank dated 1932 or before.
Denominations of five pounds and higher would be worth from $700. “Any banknote dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant. Also purchased are any Reserve Bank of New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas banknotes are also wanted, especially early Pacific Island issues.
Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity
Do you have a bunch of old coins sitting around in your drawers and cupboards? You just never know what rarities may be lurking there. The advice from Tony Grant from John Bertrand (Collectables) Limited is to “bring them in and let us have a look”. “No need to sort anything out just bring them in ‘as is’ and please don’t clean them! We can go through coin accumulations and collections fairly quickly” he said. The buyers are particularly keen to buy pre 1946 New Zealand Silver Coins for at least 20 times their face value (more for quantity). “In any event we will buy All Coins,” said Mr Grant.

Community Link Cold Kids Campaign Launches
as Winter Pressures Hit Local Families
Recently a local family came through the doors at Community Link feeling completely overwhelmed. Both parents were working, the kids at school, and on the surface everything seemed fine. Then unexpectedly the car needed urgent service work.
The repair bill was unavoidable. The car was essential for work, but paying for it meant the power bill went unpaid and the heater stayed off. Groceries were stretched. By the time they reached out, the house was freezing and everyone was suffering.
Similarly, Sarah (name changed) found herself choosing between heating her home and putting food on the table. As a single mum who was working hard to make ends meet, she was doing everything she could but the bills kept coming and something had to give. Most nights, when the weather was cold, it was the heat pump.
“I’d tuck the kids into bed with extra blankets and hope they were warm enough,” she said. “You feel like you’re letting them down.”
Through Community Link’s Cold Kids Campaign, Sarah was able to access support that made an immediate difference helping with power bills, practical advice, and reassurance that she wasn’t alone.

Stories like these are more common than many people realise. The people supported through Cold Kids are often working families, neighbours, and other parents we meet every day.
Last year, Community Link supported more than 100 local families with heating assistance. As this winter approaches and cost of living pressures continue to rise, the Cold Kids Campaign is once again there to insure no one in our community faces the winter cold alone.
No one should live in a cold home through winter

This month, we are spreading awareness about falls and encouraging falls prevention
Aotearoa New Zealand’s ageing population is growing fast, and falls affect a third of adults over 65. At Hato Hone St John we’re focused on helping people live strong and independent for longer. Falls are a leading cause of injury and triggered more than 52,000 emergency ambulance callouts last year. Here are three practical steps you can take that can make a difference:
1. Enrolling yourself or a loved one in a strength and balance class
2. Downloading ACC’s free Nymbl mobile app for in-home exercises for people aged 50+.
3. Eliminating risks at home through our falls prevention booklet (available from the foyer at the Wanaka Ambulance Station, or download by scanning the QR code.
Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing; through simple, everyday actions, we can help prevent them.

Sport Central is proud to announce the finalists for the 2026 Forsyth Barr Central Otago Sports Awards.
More than 60 nominations were received across the 11 categories, with more than 20 different sporting codes represented, highlighting the depth and diversity of sport in Central Otago. Sport Central Sport and Active Recreation Advisor Jo Knight says it has been another incredible year for Central Otago sport.
“Central Otago just seems to raise the bar every year. The standard of nominations made it incredibly difficult for our judging panel to select finalists, let alone winners. It shows just how much talent and commitment there is across the region and it’s so inspiring to see everyone being recognised for what they bring to our sporting community,” Knight says.
The winners will be announced at an awards night, organised by Sport Central and held at the Lake Wānaka Centre, on Thursday, May 7.
In addition to the judged categories, the Central Otago community is being invited to help decide the Sport Central Sporting Moment of the Year. Sport Central is calling for the public to share their favourite sporting moments from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 that deserve to be recognised.
Nominations will be shortlisted, with finalists then put to a public vote. Please email bhamilton@sportotago.co.nz with your suggestions before April 23.
Tickets to the awards night are on sale now and can be purchased via iTICKET.
