Police will continue focus on Drink Driving Wanaka Police have stopped a lot of cars over the Xmas period. Since 1st December the Wanaka Police and Rural Drink Driving Teams have apprehended 26 drivers over the legal limit. Eleven of those drivers were from the Wanaka area and only one of those was a teenager. The remainder of those apprehended were aged between 25 and 47 years of age. Although most people were aware of the new legislation the Police were disappointed with the high levels that some drivers were apprehended with (legal limit now 250 mcg). One person had 867 mcg, another 898 mcg and a further person had 931 mcg which is nearly four times the legal limit. The Police are looking for more response to new laws and will continue to focus on the new
drink driving legislation and motorists can expect to be stopped and breath tested. The Institute of Environmental Science and Research advises that the average person can drink 2 standard drinks over two hours and legally drive. However this needs to be treated with caution as it varies between individuals and other factors such as the amount of food consumed and a person’s metabolism effect the result. The Wanaka Alcohol Group (WAG) formed two years ago was setup to encourage people to make healthy choices regarding drugs and alcohol. The group meet regularly to discuss and plan initiatives to address this. We may Wanaka hold public forums to gain community feedback during 2015.

Hello again from the Wanaka Police. It has been a good week overall and great to see the average speeds of motorists have dropped on the open road to around 95-97 km/h over the last couple of months. Those who exceed the speed limit don’t be surprised when you are stopped and issued with a ticket. I’ve spoken to people out there who set their cruise control at speeds above 105 km/h. I have no idea why someone would take the risk. One was caught this week at 147kmh and another at 137km/h. Fools!! You won’t notice the difference in the time it takes to get to your destination and it costs more fuel. On top of that the demerit points for speeding risks you losing your licence. How many people out there will keep their job if they have no licence? Slow down and let’s drive defensively also. We had one crash on the Cardrona Valley this week but luckily nobody was injured. Another two drink drivers caught this week. Both well over the old breath alcohol limit. It’s good to see people have on average really pegged back or ceased their alcohol consumption before driving. Before the law change we would regularly stop drivers over the 250 microgram breath limit but now they are still out there but it’s less thanwe expected. On Monday a member of the public alerted a salesperson at a store in town that someone had stolen an item from the store. Quick work by that salesperson apprehended a male who had stolen more than $1600 of goods from eight stores in town. We arrested two persons for assault this week. One at Mt Iron on Friday and one on Sunday after the offender chased a male into a property and assaulted him. :H GHDOW ZLWK D JURXS RI ¿YH PDOHV ZKR EHKDYHG EDGO\ ZLWK KRWHO staff and are in the process of being trespassed from every bar in town. Bad behaviour will not be tolerated by our licensed premises, any more that it would be by Police. We had a call this week where a chap has received a hoax text message claiming he had won a lot of money. If it seems too good it probably is. Lastly we had a report of 5’11� bloke with long brown shoulder length hair walking naked on the Mt Iron track between Albert Town and Puzzling World. He had an English accent.
