The Slammer Tool - Simple, Made Strong. Aimee Wilson

The Slammer Ltd sell tools all around the world but operates from here in Wanaka, supporting New Zealand made. Manufactured at Templetons and Sons Engineering in Albert Town, the Slammer Tool is like a human powered jackhammer, a multi-purpose tool that combines a sledgehammer, digging bar and axe. There are also attachments such as the tile and ice head or chisel point. In addition to its landscaping uses, it can be used for search and rescue, fencing, construction and as a 4 x 4 deadman/ anchorpoint.

It allows the user to maintain good posture and use their core strength, meaning less back strain. And it can be used in tight spaces where machinery might be unable to reach. Company director T.J Irvin and his wife Rachel, who live at Lake Hawea with their sons Theo and Will, says the small business has already sold over 8000 units since the business began in 2003. But it is possible that in 2017 they could distribute that much to the United States or Australia alone. They now have the design utility patents granted in New Zealand, Australia, China, United States, South Africa and Brazil, and have further ones pending in the EU, India and Canada. Welcome to the last Crime Line before Christmas. I hope everyone is looking forward to sharing some relaxing time with family and friends. Our roads are already busy and will continue to be well into the New Year. If you are travelling out of town, remember to leave plenty of time to reach your destination and take plenty of breaks in order to maintain your concentration. The four kilometre per hour tolerance is in effect for December and January with an increased Police presence on our Highways. In and around Wanaka we need to be courteous and patient remembering there will be many visitors who are not so familiar with our roads. Here is a brief look at what Police attended to with this week: A local driver was suspended from driving for three months due to too many demerit points. A tractor was towing a hay rake on MacDougall Street when its towing hitch came out and the trailer ploughed into a parked car. Very lucky this wasnâ€™t more serious. Equipment needs to be checked every time before use and ensure safety devices are working properly. A sewing machine was reported stolen from an address in Lake Hawea. Turns out this was an attempt at teaching another person a lesson on respecting privacy. Not the best way to go about it. Next time I would suggest a polite conversation. A male was arrested for breaching his bail conditions and spent the night in a Queenstown cell. Friday saw the search and rescue crews put to work with three incidents. An Australian was rescued after setting off his locator beacon. He had become stranded in a hut due to bad weather and was running low on food. A tourist used her cell phone to call for help from Mount Roy. She became GLVRULHQWDWHG DQG ORVW RQ WKH ZD\ EDFN GRZQ 8QIRUWXQDWHO\ KHU SKRQH ZHQW Ă€DW and she could no longer be contacted. Always a good idea to have a fully charged SKRQH LI \RXÂśUH KHDGLQJ RII DGYHQWXULQJ 6KH PDQDJHG WR ÂżQG KHU RZQ ZD\ EDFN down, but not before a lot of time and effort was spend in locating her. Two mountain bikers were reported overdue, once again this was due to communication issues. Always plan your trips into the hills thoroughly and leave clear intentions with someone. A male assaulted the duty manager at a local bar after he was told he would not be served due to his level of intoxication and previous behaviour issues. Some clear lines of enquiry are currently being followed, this male can expect a knock on the door soon and it wonâ€™t be Santa. Two people were caught drink driving over the weekend and instantly lost their licences as they were both over 650 mgms. They may have to ask a reindeer for a ride to Queenstown as they both have dates to see the judge. I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas and remember to spread the love. Southern Alps Air expands ﬂeet Aimee Wilson

Southern Alps Air is proudly owned and operated by Paul and Anne Cooper and has been operating scenic ﬂights out of Makarora and Wanaka for more than 40 years. Paul was born in Luggate and initially started working as a commercial pilot at Wanaka Airport for Aspiring Air where Anne was also employed at the time. The family sold their home to buy the yellow Cessna 185 when they started out - spending 10 years in Makarora, before moving back to Wanaka and opening up a Wanaka base.

It’s hard to miss the little yellow Cessna when you drive through Makarora, and now the company has just added another big yellow plane to its fleet of six. The Gippsland G8 Airvan (8 seats) based at Wanaka airport is the latest addition bringing the seating capacity across the fleet to 32 passengers. Anne said the yellow planes had now become their ‘signature,’ and the business was a main provider of fixed-wing scenic flights at Wanaka Airport and Makarora. A pilot remains based at Makarora over the summer for the popular trips into Siberia where passengers enjoy a threehour hike and jet boat ride on top of the 25 minute flight. A newer service they offer this summer is the Blue Pools Nature Experience, which includes a 2.5 hour hike, jet boat ride and flight. Anne says their point of difference for the Milford Sound flights in particular is they offer longer flying time and more Alpine Highlights than similar services in Queenstown. “People are blown away with the Milford experience…they just can’t describe it,” she said. This is one trip where the journey is just as good as the destination, taking in views

of Mt Aspiring and glaciers along the way. “We fly further and you see more,” she said. Funnily enough, the couple’s honeymoon was spent in Milford Sound - a place Paul has now visited hundreds of times over his flying career. The main challenge with running a scenic flight business is you can’t control the weather or the number of visitors to the area. The company offers more than just scenic flights and wilderness experiences, Paul and Anne are passionate about the areas they operate into and recognise that the sheer beauty of the natural landscape is the reason people want to take a Milford Scenic Flight or a Siberia Experience. To help support this they operate a complimentary rubbish retrieval service out of Siberia Valley and support pest control operations in the Wilkin & Siberia Valleys. They are mindful of other recreational users in the National Parks and where possible, flight paths are chosen that are away from high use areas such as the Milford Track.
