Local growers, food producers, food vendors and community food organisations are being invited to take part in this year’s regional celebration of food, land and connection, with the launch of the Harvest Festival 2026.

Led by Wao Aotearoa, the festival will run from March to May this year, showcasing the Southern Lakes’ rich food culture – from fresh and foraged produce to local growing, community gardens and local hospitality. The festival aims to celebrate the people and places behind the region’s food, while strengthening connections between producers, communities and consumers.

The centrepiece of the programme will be the Harvest Festival Showcase Weekend, held 14–15 March 2026 at Rippon Hall. The weekend will bring together workshops, talks, tastings, demonstrations and hands-on experiences, all designed to highlight local knowledge, seasonal abundance, and innovative food practices.

Wao is now calling for expressions of interest from anyone keen to be involved – including farmers, growers, food vendors, chefs, educators, artisans, community groups, and organisations with ideas to share. Participation could take many forms, from hosting a workshop or tour, to showcasing and selling produce, collaborating on an event, or showcasing something new.

Organisers say the festival is about more than food. It’s about celebrating place, sharing skills, and building a more resilient local food system – together.

Those interested in taking part are encouraged to get in touch early to help shape the programme and be part of this autumn celebration.

Visit wao.co.nz/harvest to register your interest, or email kiaora@wao.co.nz for more information.

Classes bring connection and confidence to Wānaka locals

A friendly weekly English conversation group is set to return to Wānaka Library this February, continuing to help locals build confidence, connections and community.

Social English runs every Monday morning at 10.00am and has been a regular fixture at the library since July 2025. Led by an experienced tutor, the programme operates in 10-week blocks and offers a relaxed, supportive space for adults learning English as an additional language. The focus of the class is not on perfection, but participation. It provides a place where people can practise the English they already have, feel comfortable making mistakes, and connect with others from different backgrounds. Many attendees are long-term Wānaka residents, with several employers encouraging staff to attend as part of their personal and professional development. For those involved, the impact has been meaningful. One participant shared that the class helped them feel “more confident talking to others

Classes will resume on Monday, 2 February. The group welcomes new participants who

WAI Wānaka promotes Adopt a Drain initiative

Summer is in full swing, and many of us are enjoying time in the water. But after the unusually heavy rainfall we’ve experienced, it’s worth asking –are we swimming in more pollutants?

Stormwater washes whatever is on the streets – debris, rubbish, plastics, straight into local waterways. That’s why WAI Wānaka says “there’s never been a more important time to adopt a drain.”

Warmer temperatures can also draw microplastics toward the lake surface. Small actions such as reducing plastic use, washing synthetic clothing in a filter bag and picking up litter around your nearest stormwater drain can make a real difference.

National reporting from Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ shows a growing concern about stormwater pollution and microplastics in Aotearoa’s waterways. And while there are no hefty fines in place here for washing cars in driveways, simple changes in daily habits can help protect the environment.

WAI’s Adopt a Drain programme invites households, businesses and community groups to 'adopt' a stormwater drain in their neighbourhood. It's completely free: sign up, and the WAI team will visit your area for 30-minute session of practical tips.

They will even attach a steel fish to your adopted drain.

Small actions add up. Adopting a drain helps keep these precious waterways clean for everyone.
