Local growers, food producers, food vendors and community food organisations are being invited to take part in this year’s regional celebration of food, land and connection, with the launch of the Harvest Festival 2026. Led by Wao Aotearoa, the festival will run from March to May this year, showcasing the Southern Lakes’ rich food culture – from fresh and foraged produce to local growing, community gardens and local hospitality. The festival aims to celebrate the people and places behind the region’s food, while strengthening connections between producers, communities and consumers. The centrepiece of the programme will be the Harvest Festival Showcase Weekend, held 14–15 March 2026 at Rippon Hall. The weekend will bring together workshops, talks, tastings, demonstrations and hands-on experiences, all designed to highlight local knowledge, seasonal abundance, and innovative food practices.

Wao is now calling for expressions of interest from anyone keen to be involved – including farmers, growers, food vendors, chefs, educators, artisans, community groups, and organisations with ideas to share. Participation could take many forms, from hosting a workshop or tour, to showcasing and selling produce, collaborating on an event, or showcasing something new. Organisers say the festival is about more than food. It’s about celebrating place, sharing skills, and building a more resilient local food system – together. Those interested in taking part are encouraged to get in touch early to help shape the programme and be part of this autumn celebration. Visit wao.co.nz/harvest to register your interest, or email kiaora@wao.co.nz for more information.
