Food For Love is proud to celebrate 10 years of supporting the local community, marking a significant milestone in April 2026.

Since its inception, Food For Love has been dedicated to providing meals and care to individuals and families during times of need. What began as a small, community-driven initiative has grown into a vital support network, made possible through the generosity and commitment of volunteers, partners, and supporters.

To commemorate this milestone, Food For Love is hosting a special 10-year celebration on Friday, 17 April 2026. This event will bring together those who have contributed to the organisation’s journey over the past decade, recognising the collective effort that has made a meaningful difference in the community.

“This milestone is not just about Food For Love - it’s about the incredible people who have given their time, resources, and compassion over the past 10 years,” said Bex Sarginson, Co-Founder and Operations Manager of Food For Love. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has played a part in supporting our community.”

This is an open invitation to all volunteers, partners, and supporters both past and present. Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone else who has been involved and may like to attend. As numbers are limited, attendees do need to RSVP in advance. For more information please contact Tracey volunteer@foodforlovewanaka.com.

Wānaka Walk of the Cross this Good Friday

This Good Friday, the Wānaka community is warmly invited to gather for the annual Walk of the Cross - an opportunity to pause and reflect on the meaning of Easter together. The walk begins at 9.00am at the Wānaka War Memorial on Chalmers Street, before making its way along the Wānaka lakefront.

As we walk, we will follow the path Jesus took on His journey to the cross, with short reflections along the way marking this significant moment in Christian history. It is a time to consider the enduring message of compassion, forgiveness, and love that continues to shape our lives and community.

The walk will conclude at the Community Hub, where everyone is invited to enjoy hot cross buns

and a warm cuppa, offering space to connect and share in fellowship.

MAC students getting ready to razzle dazzle ‘em

Mount Aspiring College students are hard at work bringing the musical Chicago to life. Students will perform Chicago: Teen Edition which keeps the glamour, jazz, and drama of the original show but is more age appropriate and achievable for a school production.

Following the success of Legally Blonde in 2024, students were quick to get involved, with rehearsals beginning late last year. In recent weeks, they have devoted countless hours to refining their singing, dancing, and acting, showing impressive commitment and enthusiasm. A standout feature of Chicago is the live, jazz-inspired band, made up of students, staff, and community members, which brings an authentic energy to the performance.

Lead choreographer and Y13 student Olive Sinclair said she has been impressed with how dedicated the group has been. “It is not easy what we are putting together, but [the cast] understands what they’ve signed up for and it has been really easy to teach because everyone is so willing to do what’s required.” Student involvement extends well beyond those on

stage. Behind the scenes, Entertainment and Event Technology students are leading stage management, lighting, wardrobe, and props, while student choreographers have played a key role in creating the show’s dynamic dance numbers.

Mount Aspiring College would like to extend its sincere thanks to the sponsors whose support has helped make this production possible. Local law firm, Fyfe Karamaena Lawyers, is on board once again as our premium sponsor, with Wildwire Wānaka, Mitre 10, Federal Diner, Edgewater, McCulloch and Partners, and Bramwell Scaffolding all supporting us.

WHAT: Mount Aspiring College production 'Chicago'.

WHEN: Thursday, 30 April - 7.00pm, Friday, 1 May - 7.00pm, Saturday, 2 May - 2.00pm and 7.00pm.

WHERE: Lake Wānaka Centre.

INFO: Tickets $25 - $35 from Eventfinda.

Art funding available for local projects

Is your group planning a workshop or exhibition but held back by a lack of funding? Upper Clutha Community Arts Council may be able to help.

Through the Central Lakes Art Support Scheme (CLASS), grants of up to $2,500 are available for community-focused art projects in the Upper Clutha area. Past funding has supported a wide range of creative initiatives, including workshops, murals, cultural performances – and even a giant chair. These grants are funded by Central Lakes Trust, and conditions do apply. Groups are encouraged to get in touch to check eligibility and request an application form via upperclutharts@outlook.com. (Please note: individuals are not eligible for this funding.)

In addition to grant support, the Council runs the popular Wanaka Craft Market, held on Sundays through summer and autumn, providing a platform for local makers and creators. They also host the Wanaka Autumn Art School, taking place on 13 April.

Profits from the market help fund scholarships to the art school, as well as smaller creative projects that may not meet the criteria for CLASS grants — ensuring continued support for the region’s vibrant arts community.

We are excited to be opening a brand new branch in Wānaka and are looking to build a strong team ready to hit the ground running. This will be a small, close-knit team that shares our philosophy of delivering outstanding service and building lasting customer relationships within the local community.

We are seeking a motivated Branch Supervisor to lead the team and support the day-to-day operations of the branch. This hands on role offers exposure across all areas of the business – from customer sales and account support to managing inwards and outwards goods – ensuring the branch operates efficiently and professionally from day one.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervising daily branch operations

• Coordinating inwards and outwards goods and dispatch

• Assisting customers with sales and product enquiries

About You

• Reliable, organised, and practical

• Strong communication and people skills

• Able to lead by example in a small team

• Previous supervisory, trade, or retail experience preferred

• Experience in the electrical industry an advantage

What We Offer

• Competitive hourly rate

• Southern Cross health insurance (after 3 months)

• Employee incentive programme

• Supportive, locally owned company

• Opportunity to help establish a new branch

This is a great opportunity to play a key role in launching a new Wānaka branch and building strong local connections.

To apply for this role, send your CV and covering letter to damian.lipinski@telfer.co.nz or john.white@telfer.co.nz

I am encouraging Luggate residents to attend an upcoming community meeting to discuss proposed rates increases from the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).

While the average rates increase across the district is 11.6%, figures in the Draft Annual Plan indicate a proposed 29.1% increase for a Luggate property with a capital value of $1,060,000.

Based on my own situation, I estimate that if the proposed increase proceeds, the total rise in rates on my property over two years will be just over 51%, following a 17.8% increase last year.

After speaking with other residents, I found there is strong interest in better understanding the reasons behind the proposed increases and how they may impact households. I

03 443 7805 | hello@mymessenger.co.nz | 24 Dungarvon St, Wānaka | mymessenger.co.nz

shared information on the Luggate Village Facebook page to help bring the community together and facilitate a discussion with council representatives.

Like many people in the area, we are dealing with a chronic cost of living crisis. While there is growth in Luggate and the wider district, it raises questions about how that growth is funded and the impact on existing ratepayers.

A meeting has been arranged with Mayor John Glover and Wānaka councillors, providing an opportunity for residents to ask questions and hear directly from elected officials.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 2 April at 4.30pm at the Luggate Memorial Hall. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

The QLDC are proposing ‘double digit’ rates rises.

Rates increases may be inevitable, and I recognise the pressures Council is facing. However, can they be lower?

I’m encouraging Council to review departmental staffing and expenditure, and look for efficiencies where possible – before further burdening ratepayers.
